How Shortshanks Screwed All

The Tribune continues to write like they just found the key to the safety deposit box with their balls in it. Another broadside at the Daley years:
  • Two years into his reign as Chicago's longest-serving mayor,Richard M. Daleytook advantage of the state's convoluted pension system to significantly increase his potential payout while saving $400,000 in contributions, a Tribune/WGN-TV investigation has found.

Daley, a former state senator, made it happen by briefly rejoining the legislative pension plan in 1991. He stayed there just one month before returning to Chicago's municipal pension fund, but the switches made him eligible for benefits worth 85 percent of his mayoral salary — a better rate than all other city employees receive.

He was just 49 years old at the time. Even if Daley had never won another election, he could have started collecting a public pension at age 55 of $97,750 a year. Without the steps he took, his public pension benefits at that age would have been worth just $20,686.
But remember, it's those evil police, firefighters and teachers bankrupting the funds.

Wow. Just NOW they're digging up Daley's misdeeds?

They couldn't report this when he was in office?

I suppose the idiot electorate would have re-elected him regardless.

Too little, too late Tribune. Thanks for nothing.

Daley's total take home pension is just over $180,000, and the interesting thing is he contributed at a much lower rate, because the deductions came from his first assemblymen's salary, so he saved himself almost a half million bucks in out of pocket contributions...and I though hizonner was kind of a slow witted guy all of these years!

Two quick points off of other peoples comments. These points are connected. First is with regards to the commenter who pointed out that pension reform is from this point forward and not correcting past theivery. Wrong! Every misdeed has to be attacked. (I would say its a misdeed more than a theft since he operated within the law or bending of the law.) The second comment is to the commenter who questions who cares what Daley pulls in as it won't make a dent in ours (pension fund). Answer: I do! This is how the whole broken system got so far out of whack!

Kass: Daley deal should make people sick

Updated 10:06 a.m.

"Chicago is near insolvency. City workers are bracing for pay and benefit cuts. And Rich Daley, the former mayor who had his behind kissed by the powerful in this town ..., has an inside pension deal that should make sane people sick."

http://www.chicagotribune.com/

No doesn't make Rahm sick, not at all.

In fact we haven't done enough for the ex-mayor. We the taxpayers need to pay for his security and drivers and things into perpetuity right?

What kind of benefits do people qualify for when they take the Presidents Chief of Staff position for a year or so? Seems like we have an abnormal number of Chicago politicians doing that too.

2: 43 am I can tell of your weariness of the system. Please dont give up. You stated 3-4 officers would benefit from a pension, as lucrative as mayor richard mumbles, that is a big deal. But he didnt give those officers a chance. Those officers have already paid their 9%, while, the city, under daleydom paid none. Twenty years of his shenanigans, he paid less into it and made sure he'd get top dollar in return. All the while short changing those 3-4 officers. So, yes it does matter. Although the tribune is on the rahm agenda, releasing stories making his benefactors look like the thieves they are, all the while making the daleys, both bill and richie, to counter attack by talking term limits, the unnecessary longer school day etc., the public/taxpayer can finally read for themselves what scc and coppers have been furiously, passionately trying to get the public/taxpayer to realize. The pension system has to be saved. The Fop membership, both retired/current officers, family, friends have to get politically active, you cant just let your "union leaders" take the helm and expect them not to sell you out for their own benefit. Right? Gannon, Donahue, shields..wink wink. Go to your union meetings, townhall meetings, visit the city council, so you can see for yourself the pompous assholes, mell, burke, brookins, beale, solís, cardenas, zewlewski, do nothing, but waste your money. Get involved. Its hard to go to these meetings and see a couple handful of people. See, for yourselves, how the lack of numbers allows these asshats to benefit themselves. Get involved. Send a message come november. The future of your pension and livelihood depend on your willingness to get involved.

This is how we demonize the public pensions to win the hearts and minds of the people to enable pension cuts for the police, fire and the teachers.

Those greedy blood sucking bastards!

We can't afford the pension because the politicians didn't keep their end of the written pension agreements. So to fix it the politicians get off Scott free and we should either: A) delay retirement or B) contribute more to make up for the stolen money or C) both. No-one held accountable. It's hooray for me and eff you. I got mine.

Some little asshole yells out "fuck you Daley" and he winds up getting prison time because the cop who chased him got hurt. Why the cop even chased down this jerk is beyond me. Anyway this sums up the entire story of the Daley years. Now the "bill" is coming due because the "micro manager" fucked us all. Now he dances around his brothers condo on Michigan Ave., pissing down on the peasants walking the street from the balcony, and gets chauffeured around with a city car, police bodyguards, and free gas. All paid for by us the tax payers. He makes lots of trips to China to make even more money on all of the "favors" he did while fucking us all those years. What keeps the blood sucking leech Mayors in office is the over 70% of voters who do NOT vote. They can't be bothered so they get it good and hard. They deserve it too/

In other countries voting is mandatory and turnout is something like over 90%. My taxes have gone up over $2000 just in the last ten years therefore I can't agree that underfunding the pensions in exchange for no property taxes is true. No matter what they say, even the new threats to double prop taxes, is ridiculous because they will be raised anyway for one bogus reason or another. The city needs to get rid of the tif money and stop overcharging it's citizens for benefits we never see but only companies do. Citizens should not have to pay for a company to get a break here.

Our pension system is broken. There are too many people drawing from the fund and not enough money to fund it. Even if the city contributes properly, the pension was not built to support this many people. Lets say you retire with thirty years on: you would have contributed anywhere from 210,000 - 320,000. Now, the city contributes their percentage and stocks and bonds are supposed to support the rest. Lets say you're hired at 30, retire at 60 and live until 80. That's 20 years of receiving a city pension. You'll be getting roughly 60,000 a year from our pension fund. 60k times 20 years 1.2 million per officer. This system can work if our trade market is in good shape and if we a limited amount of officers. However, with the current state of things, our pension system will collapse, even if the city contriubtes their end. I feel because we have a contract that says we'll get this much when we'll retire, they owe us this. Grandfather us in. If the city was smart, they'd end the pension system all together and offer 401k. There is a reason why the private industry doesn't have pensions. THEY ARE TOO F'ING EXPENSIVE.

Despite all this fleecing of the taxpayers by Shanks, Rahm continues to provide him with bodyguards and city cars!
When asked about Daley and the alderthieves outrageous pensions Rahm sidesteps the question and said we need pension reform, AKA less benefits, for city workers. You are a grade A asshole Rahm!
