$128 Million?

  • The NATO summit coming to Chicago later this month will give a $128 million short-term boost to the city’s economy, according to a projection released by the head of the host committee Monday.

That does not count any long-term benefits of raising Chicago’s profile.

City officials and Mayor Rahm Emanuel insisted Monday that taxpayers will not be on the hook for a single dime of the $55 million cost of the summit.

And guess who agrees this is bullshit?

  • Summit critics called the projection inflated and said other summits end up costing cities money when juries award protestors judgements against over-reaching police departments.

“Oh what a joke — I wish I was smoking what they’re smoking,” said Andy Thayer, an organizer with the Coalition Against NATO/G8. “You look at the history of these summits and cities usually end up paying out millions of dollars because of the excesses of city officials on protestors.”

But don't listen to Andy. How about the entire government of Canada?

  • The Canadian government concluded the costs of the 2010 G8/G20 Summit in Toronto were $857 million.
We're betting Canada is closer to the truth than Rahm's people are.

Camera, camera, whole world is watching, whole world is watching, lawsuit, lawsuit, lawsuit.

Andy lost his mind a long time ago -- but keep it up, a__hole. It is becoming increasingly demonstrable that Loevy and Loevy is bankrolling Thayer in the hopes of cashing in on "police brutality" cases from the civil disorder THEY ARE WORKING TO CAUSE.

Here's a tip for all public service workers maybe?

When you get your next check... run, don't walk to the bank and cash it before they declare bankruptcy.

Yeah, more like we've already spent $128 million on this thing... it's all borrowed money from the bankers...and we'll get the tax increase very shortly to pay it all back with interest. Where's the money coming from?

I mean really..what are 50 dignitaries going to spend $128 million on? Hookers? We understand US security only goes up to $30 bucks from what I've read so it can't be that.

ha, ya this city is fucked. blow it out your ass rahm. This is already known downtown...believe me. and there is going to be one person who will be rahms fall guy, gary mccarthy. he will fall after nato and rahm will look like a hero for making wysinger the new supt.. then he gets to say two things, he brought in a guy who was a chicago cop(laughable) and an African American... thus playing the political card once again. Rahm is way to predictable... just look at what he did in the first two years of obama..its the same stuff.

In the land of Rahm and Lori everything is all peachy and rosy. They're looking through rose colored glasses that the rest of us don't have.
They're both sort of like that Iraqi official that during desert storm insisted that their ground forces were winning the ground battle. This city is so woefully unprepared for this NATO fiasco yet in Rahm and Lori's world it 's gonna be like a picnic with parades! What could possibly go wrong??

That number is a complete crock.

First of all - subtract ALL the money you are going to lose from people who are NOT going to come downtown who usually do. My wife put in vacation time for that whole week. (As did others)

Attitude of the people who have to work downtown? Work from home that week if you can. Keep clear from the protests and line-of-fire.

Reading all the issues here and on DSLC, we are disgusted with the way the police are muzzled and under too much political oversight by political hacks - both elected and on the side (like the Reverends)

Where is your Union leader? This shows us your union is not effective. Officer safety should be of paramount importance - if not from the police superintendent and staff, at least from the union perspective. All we see are rank amateurs.

Let Chicago burn. Maybe then people will wake up and demand better leadership.

HEALEY'S "PROFIT PROJECTIONS" INCLUDE ALL THE EXPENSES FOR NATO!

What the hell kind of business spends 95 cents, makes 5 cents, and claims that they made a dollar?

NATO summit's economic impact questioned

Economist says host panel's projection of $128 million in spending is overestimated

By Jeff Coen and Kathy Bergen, Chicago Tribune reporters

May 1, 2012

"The Chicago host committee for the NATO summit said Monday that the event would be a bigger economic boon than some of the city's best-known trade shows, but the rosy projections include what the government and corporations are spending to put it on.

"Organizers have long promised that the May 20-21 event will be a financial win for the city despite any threat of disruption from protesters. To bolster that case, they released a 15-page study from an accounting firm that projected the total economic impact would be $128.2 million.

"The Chicago NATO host committee released the estimate as its executive director, Lori Healey, was addressing the City Club of Chicago at a downtown luncheon.

"This is a tremendous return on an investment that does not cost the taxpayers anything," Healey [lied].

"The federal government [taxpayers] has promised $19 million toward the cost of putting on the summit. Private donors — including some of the area's biggest companies — have pledged to cover the rest of the $55 million price tag, including any additional local government costs...

"University of Chicago economist Allen Sanderson said the study's conclusion is a gross overestimate. As an example, it likely underestimates the loss of other tourism and business travel that weekend, he said.

"Economic impact studies largely are public relations documents," Sanderson said. "They are not some academic study in molecular biology or nuclear physics."

"Healey said the study did take into account possible damage from demonstrations and potential business disruption, but she did not give a dollar figure and none was included in the study.

And don't forget those generous, civic-minded corporations who donate so much.

Emphasize, remind all, this is at no cost to the taxpayers.

So we're to assume that these corporate titans reach into their own deep pockets to appease the master.

The consumer pays the price, just adding to the rise in inflation.

If every tourist attraction downtown has to close for the safety of its employees and guests (and the fact that federal security lockdown prevents any guests from even accessing museum campus, etc),

then where the hell is this economic boost coming in? Pretty much exclusively at the Hyatt McCormick Place is my guess.

Once upon a time it was. Not anymore. Not since the bankers busted out the economy

On May 1, 2012,

$857 mil. Canadian Dollar(s) =
$871.02 mil. U.S. dollar(s),

at an exchange rate of 1.0164 (using nominal rate).

http://www.bankofcanada.ca/rates/exchange/daily-converter/

Not sure what the exchange rate was during their summit though. I'd be surprised if it was more than a few cents plus or minus the US dollar.

Oh yeah. really?

Let's follow the money trail.

Let me give you just one example on how this IS costing the taxpayers.

---

"Healey’s committee has raised $36.5 million from corporate donors and identified $19.1 million in federal security grants to cover the cost of hosting the May 20-21 summit.

“Taxpayers will not pay anything for the summit — That’s why we raised private money and I secured the federal money,” Emanuel said.

http://www.suntimes.com/business/12228572-420/study-nato-summit-to-give-chicago-a-128-million-boost.html

---------------------------

Who ya kidding mayor? The taxpayers are already paying the price!

So let me ask you where are the corporations getting the money to donate to this NATO party?

STOP BULLSHITTING THE PEOPLE MAYOR!.

Caterpillar is one of those private corporate donors.

And guess what happened early this morning?

JOLIET — Seven hundred eighty machinists went on strike at the Caterpillar Inc. plant in Joliet at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday after union members rejected a contract Sunday that provided no increase in pay while requiring employees to pay more for health care.

***

About 94 percent of the members voted against it," he said.

The contract would have maintained wages at present levels for six years without any cost-of-living increase, Jones said, while "health costs would increase two-and-a-half times over the six-year contract."

"Caterpillar also looked to take away union rights with major cuts in union seniority rights.

"Essentially, Caterpillar is making record profits, $1.5 billion in the first quarter. They made a $4.9 billion profit last year, and their CEO received a 42 percent increase in compensation, but they're taking away from the workers," said Jones, adding that the union stood ready to continue contract talks at any time.

http://www.pjstar.com/news/x206667427/Cat-workers-in-Joliet-plan-to-strike

Hmmm, some might conclude that Cat is taking the money away from 870 IAM union workers to fund this NATO donation bullshit.

We're losing tax revenue with this strike already.

Freezing these workers raises and we lose even more revenue down the road. Forcing the workers to pay more for their own healthcare takes even more money out of the economy. Disposable income goes down as a result. So does tax revenue. So does the trickle down.

So what does the average Illinois taxpayer gain from this?

ZIP!

NOW. I challenge the media or anyone to go right down that published list of corporate donors and let's see how much of this donated NATO money is coming out of the workers paychecks, the taxpayers, and benefit cuts or from layoffs taking money out of the economy not putting it into the economy.

The CME Group is on the list we just gave them huge tax breaks to. Same goes for Sears and for Motorola solutions. So if they kick back a few mil. from their $100 mil tax breaks it creates a nice illusion eh?

The Host Committee also unveiled its official website, which includes the list of donors;
( www.chicagonato.org ) however, the amounts each company donated will not be revealed until June, according to Jen Martinez, a spokesman for the committee.

Donors: UPS; Walgreens; Wal-Mart; AECOM; Allstate; Corning; DLA Piper; Edelman; Grosvenor Capital Management LP; McDonald's; John Buck Co.; Joseph Freed Associates; Honeywell; ITW; JP Morgan; Raytheon; Citi; Duke Energy: FedEx; Health Care Service Corp.; Baxter; BMO Harris Bank; Chevron; CBOE; United Airlines; GE; Motorola Solutions; Pepsico; Caterpillar; CME Group; Exelon; Abbott; AT&T and Boeing Corp.

And with regards to the $19 mil. in Federal money IT'S TAX PAYER DOLLARS IDIOT! who are you kidding?

Hey asshole why do you think it's easier to get??
Because nobody in their right mind wants anything to do with it!

Thank God for short attention spans.

It's like watching a money laundering operation.

They'll give this and that corporation a $100 million dollar tax break so that the corporation can return some of that money as a donation to a NATO party and act like that they are doing the taxpayers a favor -- and we'll tell the taxpayers that it's not costing them a dime.

Sears got $128 million, CME Group's estimate is $85 mil/year. Motorola got $100 million in tax breaks all to create jobs right?

So that's over $300 mil right there.

If these companies kick back 10% for NATO that pretty much covers the alleged corporate NATO donations at the taxpayers expense.

We won't know how much of that tax break money was kicked back as a NATO donation until the Host committee publishes the numbers in June or July though.

Funny how in this day and age of high speed computers with sub-second real-time processing power makes it impossible to track and publish those donations real-time isn't it?

Obama in Afghanistan: New day on horizon,

Yeah (They/he) "flew to the back" as that Iraqi information minister once said when talking about American troops during the US invastion, fled the country and is likely sitting in a safe house in Afghanistan somewhere so he wouldn't get "mic-checked" while trying to put out propaganda about NATO's success here.

The trip also provides a nice diversion from the social unrest of the day across about 115 cities that are putting on a Mayday protest don't you think?

I'll tell you what.

If the NATO dignitaries want to boast about the success of their actions in Afghanistan then let them hold their summit there in Afghanistan since it is now so safe and secure. Back up your words with your actions that's all.

Well let's give them the benefit of a doubt for just one second...just one.

Should they pull in $128 million in TEMPORARY profits until the bills roll in a few weeks later.

THEN

They can pay for the $100 million dollar lawsuit against the city and CPD with that money -- that the City has been tying up for two years in the courts enriching all their lawyer friends on the taxpayers dime via the process.

What suit? This one

City seeks gag order to keep Christina Eilman's family from speaking to media.

The family of the California woman has blamed the city's legal maneuvering for dragging out the lawsuit, which seeks as much as $100 million for the devastating injuries Eilman suffered after police released her into one of Chicago's highest-crime neighborhoods. She was sexually assaulted and fell from the seventh-floor window of a public housing building.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-04-30/news/ct-met-police-lawsuit-eilman-0430-20120430_1_gag-order-trial-date-ruling

That's just one f--k-up that may cost $100 million and let's say they settle for just half. Now how many Christina Eilman's are we going to create during NATO. Yeah blame Leovy and Leovy for chomping at the bit but you can bet your azz that the lawyers on the cities side are preparing to put that down-stroke on a new Mercedes or something too.

Yeah I know.. sit down and shut up right?

The best feature of O’Hare is its public transportation to and from the airport (with a score of five out of 22). It ranked 17th for design, cleanliness, and location. The overall check-in and security experience came in with a poor showing of 17, while a reputation for snarled flights and stormy winter weather resulted in a ranking of 21 out of 22 for delays.

Frantic Andy doesn't matter. Everyone has a TV, you know?

The FBI says that it was a sting. They let the men plant the "explosives," punch an activation code into the timers...and then grabbed them.

...and there it is.

"$55 million is chump change when it comes to scamming the tax payers in this state. Just take a look at what happened to tiny little Dixon IL."

Richard M. Daley stole more than that from Chicago during his reign of terror.

What he didn't personally take, he gave to friends & relatives.

He left the city a broke-ass dump.

It's the Daley Legacy!

"The Koolaid Kid says that federal grants are going to pay for some of security the costs, not the taxpayers. WELL, what the fuck does he think "federal grants" are? They're tax dollars"

NO ONE in the media is smart enough to ask about this?

No one?

Of course, it's in their interest to have protesters, mayhem and violence. It gives them something to report and subsequently sell advertising.

"Rahm's lid on the media will boil over soon."

No. Look how long it's taken them to report Daley's pension tomfoolery and they also waited until he was out of office to really let go on the Vanecko murder scandal.

"The media is as treacherous as crackhead with a pin number."

LOL! That's true!

"I see loop people saw a small warm-up protest today, way to go and test the city for next 30 days. If this is a piece of cake, we will see how things will heat up with 10 to 50 thousand idiots rolling through downtown."

--5/01/2012 12:55:00 PM

Yeah, big "test," right. More of this happening in Andy's mind than anywhere else.

See how Occupy leaders regard their followers? "Idiots."

There's a lesson there.
