I Said What?

  • Lengthening the school day at Chicago public schools is a key part of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s agenda, but his predecessor doesn’t think it’s the answer to
    providing a better education.

“At first I thought it was, but I don’t think so,” former Mayor Richard M. Daley said in an interview Monday night on WLS-Channel 7 News. “To me, to take a fourth-grader or a sixth-grader or a high school student, and say you’re going to stay more than six hours — we need quality instructions.”

Whatever it is, he's certainly trying to rewrite the historical record.

"...Daley said in an interview Monday night..."

No hard-hitting questions about how he "took advantage of the state's convoluted pension system to significantly increase his potential payout while saving $400,000 in contributions", eh?

Way to soft-peddle this jerk.

The man is an idiot. He goes to china and praises the students and teachers in the classroom. He says Chicago should copy the chinese model. Do you think the chinese would show him a normal classroom? Only our former mayor would believe the chinese, because he is probably on their payroll too.

Well, let's try quantity because quality is not working. As for the Teachers union - scr*w them. The majority of them can't pass the Skills test, or whatever it is and I could pass it and I am not a teacher. The reason they can not pass the test is because they skipped college courses that required study time more than five minutes and now they are not qualified. Its not a miinority "thing", its a lazy "thing."

This is just Daley swiping back at Rahm, in retaliation for Rahm's recent complaints about the way Daley ran things.

Good to see Shanks disagree with Rahm but in typical Shanks fashion his quotes don't make a lot of sense.

Maybe fat ass could donate some of those millions he helped steal from taxpayers to provide "quality" education for our kids. Right. I could give a rats ass what this moron said when he was mayor so why would I care now.

“At first I t'ought it was, but I don’t t'ink so.”

-- former Mayor Richard M. Daley

In a horrible way, I actually miss these little cameos of the disordered mind that we used to be treated to so often.

FORMER MAYOR DALEY IS STILL CLINICALLY INSANE.

Many residents are mad about the longer day.. Some people are PARENTS and want to have their kids to have a CHILDHOOD not go to GOVERNMENT CAMP.. How come back in the 50-60's kids went to school 6 hours a day had an hour for lunch and 2 15 minute recesses and came out knowing MORE than the kids now?? BTW there were 32+ plus kids to each class room..

It's because we came from two parent homes and had the same last name as our parents. If we got bad grades, they got on us until we improved. We did our own homework, without help, so WE learned the material. When we had a project, we did it, not our parents, so WE learned. If we dared to act like a goof and our teachers called our folks, there was hell to pay and we straightened up. Our parents didn't blame the teacher. We had parents who parented, who kept on us to get good grades, rewarded our success, and helped on those rare occasions when we were really stumped.

You could keep most of these CPS kids in school 24/7 and they would still come out dumber than a box of rocks. When there is no parent or guardian at home making these kids do homework and getting to bed by 10 pm they are not going to try and learn. It is a waste of time and money. And don't blame the teachers. They do a great job with what they have to work with. You can't be the guy/gal with the whip and hammer and teach at the same time.
