Reporter Speaks Truth - Pays Price

We weren't going to cover this at all at first. We figured it was another moment where the media gives all sorts of air time to police haters and lets them spout their bullshit to the masses. But then things took a curious turn:
  • News 12 reporter Sean Bergin has been suspended after he argued on the air that the “anti-cop mentality that has so contaminated America’s inner cities” is largely the result of “young black men growing up without fathers.”

    A source with direct knowledge of the situation confirmed to TheBlaze on Monday that Bergin has, in fact, been suspended over his remarks about the black community and may end up being fired. The source said Bergin was asked not to come in Monday and Tuesday as the news station figures out how to handle the situation.
The interview of the spouse of a cop killer was somewhat astounding in that she said her now-deceased husband should have killed more cops before he died. He had stolen a gun and then ambushed responding officers, killing rookie Police Officer Melvin Santiago. It seemed bad enough that the media broadcast her bullshit, but then reporter Sean Bergin related the following:
  • “We were besieged, flooded with calls from police officers furious that we would give media coverage to the life of a cop killer. It’s understandable. We decided to air it because it’s important to shine a light on the anti-cop mentality that has so contaminated America’s inner cities. This same, sick, perverse line of thinking is evident from Jersey City, to Newark and Patterson to Trenton.”

    “It has made the police officer’s job impossible and it has got to stop. The underlying cause of all of this, of course: young black men growing up without fathers. Unfortunately, no one in the news media has the courage to touch that subject.”
Of course, telling the truth cannot be allowed and he was promptly suspended, had his hours cut and has since resigned rather than work under the restrictions of his station. More importantly, he hasn't shut up about the entire incident:
  • “I broke the rules, but I broke the rules because I was doing the right thing,” he told TheBlaze. “You can’t fix a problem if you don’t talk about the problem. The truth is, 73 percent of African-American children grow up without fathers. It’s a topic that needs to be handled delicately — and really, this situation could have been used as a way to explore that.”

    But no one in the news media wants to touch the subject, Bergin argued.

    “I’m in these housing projects all the time, and it’s all for the same thing: black men slaughtering each other in the streets. Why is this happening?” he continued, adding that it’s nearly impossible to cover the issue in-depth and accurately when surrounded by “stark raving liberals who masquerade as journalists.”
Don't we recall a few years ago when someone who likes to run guns to Mexican narco-traffickers, obstructs Congressional oversight and refuses to prosecute perjurers said something about Americans being cowards over racial issues and it was time for some sort of national discussion on the subject? How, we wonder, can you have a national discussion when one side refuses to approach the subject in any mature way, shape or form? If Holder and his ilk wanted to have some serious discussions, we'd be talking about:
  • [29 June] - One person was killed and at least four people were injured in a shooting during an after-hours event ahead of  the BET Awards Sunday in East Hollywood.
  • [30 June]Police continued searching Monday for two men who exchanged gunfire on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter, leaving nine people shot in the crossfire, including two who were in critical condition.
  • [05 July] - A gunman opened fire early Saturday morning in Indianapolis, sending victims scrambling for cover in a trendy neighborhood and leaving seven people injured, one critically, police and witnesses said.
  • [05 July] - Six people were injured at Houston music festival early Saturday morning, authorities said. Several thousand people had gathered at an arena for a Fourth of July party at the Houston Caribbean Festival, which was supposed to run until around 5 a.m., Houston Police spokesman Jodi Silva said.
  • Not to mention the 77 people shot in Chicago over the holiday.
But lord forbid that people talk about something as mundane as race. We're being inundated with all sorts of distractions in order to avoid talking about this issue while Mr Bergin points out that the emperor is indeed wearing little more than a smile. We salute his effort though.

Mr. Bergin isn't correct at all. Lots of people hate
police for a variety of reasons: ignorance (being taught that by the adults that raise them), and, something we cops are loath to discuss: abuses.
Beatings, being robbed of their ill gotten gains (drug proceeds) by police...the list goes on.
I know that I've had to pull traffic stops on more than a few people who turned out to be relatives/spouses of police as well. Many of them had serious contempt for law enforcement as well. i will point out that these were people of both sexes and all races. What's the reason for that? One could speculate on a number of reasons, all of which could have some validity, but none of which might be a good answer. I'm no authority on the reasons why there exists so much enmity between some citizens and police, and neither is Mr. Bergin. I don't want to see the guy lose his job, but he was wrong, even irresponsible for him to even attempt to come off as an authority on the subject.

SCC,

I am as black as a Trojan Midnight and been in law enforcement since June 16, 1986 and yet I must admit that there is a nugget of truth to what this reporter is saying. Yes there is institutional racism and other obstacles in our imperfect society but no racism or hatred in hell can justify a thug murdering a police officer trying to protect community and do his job. As a noted Black conservative once wrote "Name a better place". No matter what obstacles exist in America, name a better place and go there if you can't stand America! I believe you will see the emergence of a new Black Leadership that while seeking economic and social justice is not afraid to confront this sort of pathos that exists. And I am not talking about clowns like Allen West. But I am talking about sage leaders who will confront this sickening cycle of lunacy that exists among so many poor blacks, hispanics, and whites. Yes Dammit I said it! This pathos knows no color! RIP Officer!

I guess Eric Holder was wrong. America is not a nation of cowards. The cowards, in fact, are the socialist liberals and their propaganda arm. When good men speak out, they are forcibly silenced by the socialists.

All of these socialists need to go to the wall. And soon. The good news is that they are such pussies that it won't be much of a fight. They'll all fall like the little rats they are.

The reporter lost his job and rightfully so. In my opinion at least. His job is to report the news, not give opinions and assumptions(actually, it was more like a bold statement) about the state of ALL black men. How many black men, black fathers, within the JCPD would agree with this mans statement that they are the reason others in their race hate the police? The reporters statement wouldn't be to factual then - black fathers disagreeing I mean. How many in CPD would agree? LAPD? NYPD?

You can't say that not having a father is an excuse. Then go on to praise someone for saying that it actually is the root cause.

All well and good: however, there are some things that you just DO NOT talk about or discuss in our current society. Race is one of them as long as that discussion is about the culture, morals or any thing else derogatory to blacks. As non-blacks, we just plain cannot say, or do anything that casts members of the black race in a bad light. This rule goes boyond social custom. It is a governmental quasi-law.

More truth needs to be told and more truth needs to be heard - and accepted by those who don't want to hear the truth.

As it relates to Chicago....

FIRST, you need to define the problem before you can solve it and dancing around it or trying to avoid it will not do anything.

It is time to take a whole different approach with the problems of society instead of pandering to them and talking about restricting Assault Rifles when none were even used in committing any of the shootings.

Second, you need to enforce the laws already on the books instead of whining we need more.

Third, murder is a terrible thing, but what is more terrible is not taking care of those who murder.

Bring back the death sentence, but bring it back where you have swift public hangings. AND - televise them.

Too barbaric? Too harsh? Too outrageous in this day and age? As if we are somehow better than that in this society?

It's outrageous we have 80 people shot in one weekend and there is no deterrent or no group of law enforcement that can quell the violence.

It is outrageous that we must tolerate this criminal element because no one has the balls to call it the way it is and take of it the way it should be taken care of.

Politicians have become pandering eunuchs worried more about keeping their place at the public trough than keeping society safe.

The truth hurts, but political correctness hurts society more.

Ever since the urban riots of the 1960s, the most irresponsible, obnoxious, anti-social, violent, and criminal behavior committed by
the black underclass has been rewarded by trillions of dollars expended in "social programs". This includes funding "community organizations" that are little more than fronts for murderous gangbangers, repeatedly rebuilding residences, schools and businesses destroyed by the residents themselves, and paying off race-baiting hucksters like Sharpton and the Jacksons. Hollywood, the media, and pandering, exploitative politicians (overwhelmingly democrats) keep laying on the white guilt mantra decades and centuries after the klan, Jim Crow laws, and slavery have any true relevance in the self-inflicted squalor of hip-hop, ghetto, thug life culture.
Responsible, self-made black success stories abound. However, there is no opportunity for left wing fascists (formerly known as liberals) to exploit these individuals for personal, political, and financial (government funded) gain. Most of these successful blacks keep a low profile lest they find themselves targets of the left like Dr. Ben Carson, Justice Clarence Thomas, and Bill Cosby.
So the pattern continues: shoot, riot, rinse, repeat, and be rewarded.

Not a cop but a black man who grew up in the projects. Just making that blanket stastement is very easy and absolves law enforcement of their jobs. There is a chain that is not being followed. When criminals are caught with guns, no matter the age or race or background, lock their asses up. Period. Growing up in the projects we did not have access to the damn weapons these kids, yes I said kids have today. Those are the killers now, 13, 14 year olds. Think about that for a minute. When they are caught most are released due to age. And I have only read about one straw buyer getting caught and doing time. Are we waiting on another Fast and Furious situation? What the fuck. Yes there is a serious problem with black fathers not being around but that is a different damn topic. Enforce the laws on the books, lets work together, out the prosecutors and judges who fuck us over so we can remove their sorry asses.

There seems to be some national agenda to prop up the black community. Either by welfare benefits, free schooling, affirmative action, and even in the media where you ALWAYS see a father if they showing a black household on TV commercials. Anyone else notice this?

How much longer is one particular race going to be artificially propped up?

The truth about father hood and personal responsibility that Bill Cosby speaks about is laughed at. It's ok and accepted nowadays to be a single mother married to the government.

We live in very sick and twisted times socially. Its not getting any better unfortunately if reporters cannot report the truth.

Years ago, back when helmet haired Ted Koppel was still the regular host, "Nightline" aired an episode on urban crime and gun ownership set in the violent streets of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. What I will always remember was that the reporter made a carefully phrased statement that acknowledged the racial dimension of crime. Gun related crimes in Philadelphia were closely correlated with urban minorities (emphasis was placed upon AA) while suburban and rural white gun owners rarely used their weapons to commit crimes.

I could not believe that the program aired. Of course, now it is down the memory hole.

Just because he didn't provide the facts on air about the 73% of African American children growing up fatherless, doesn't mean the facts aren't there. The man is a reporter and was simply giving an editorial based on his experiences with the hatred and disdain he has seen cast upon the police by the African American community.
Saying that you have been party to contempt from spouses and family members of the police is just deflecting the issue at hand and if you don't think there is a difference in how we as police are treated by the African American community and that of other communities, you have your head in the sand.
I am by no means saying I have all the answers to why the african American community hates the police so much, but saying it is our fault, i.e. robbing drug proceeds , is a joke. The police are not responsible for shaping the African American community into what it has become and if that is the case, what does it say about the so called leaders like Sharpton, Jackson and even our POTUS?
The police are not the problem in these African American communities. What do you think those same communities would become without us?

I don't care how many 'no guns' stickers they put on places....carry anyway because your life or someone else's life may depend on it.

Absolutely true that this can be traced to fatherless households, and 70% of kids being born into a single parent household.

But this is the way Democrats want it.

Single? Single with a kid? You get a check. Man comes into the house? No more check.

This destroys any incentive to work. And anything that you subsidize, you get more of.

The Democrats hold themselves out as the great savior of the black community. Bullshit.

The Democrats know damn well that the entitlement community becomes addicted to the entitlements, and can then be relied on to vote Democratic. Biggest vote buying scheme ever created.

Democrats don't want to see black people succeed. Democrats want to keep black people enslaved.

I don't understand why he said that the subject (father-less boys) needed to be discussed 'delicately'

I'm not a cop so I can say with great authority that most normal people don't hate police but are afraid of them. It's got to do with concern about their authority, wanting to be treated fairly by them, don't want to be caught doing something bad either by intention or a slip-up, etc...but that is more of a normally-law-abiding citizen standpoint. I've never had anything really bad happen with police but still felt really odd the first few times I attended CAPS Meetings. There needs to be strict parental involvement, strict community invovlement, strict law enforcement and strict judicial involvement.

No fathers? How about no mothers either?? How many of these kids are turned over to the grandma, auntie, older sister, the state, etc. because the mother is too busy scoring rocks or heroin or a new man?? You've got kids growing up with no supervision, and are excused from all responsibilities like school, work, and community who take the easy route making money off selling dope. Only when they get caught, or killed, then you see momma/auntie/cousin and co. crawl from the woodwork crying and protesting, suing and slandering everyone under the sun for what THEY DID to her "baby". Maybe if these people were forced to take responsibility for their own actions, we would could start SOLVING the problem!

The reporter deviated from his script, and was punished for same. The TV station was within their righs to suspend him.

On the other hand, what he said is correct. Fatherless homes are but ONE reason. When children do not have discipline in their lives, in their home, by a father a-n-d mother, society will reflect this. That's why the institution of marriage was instituted..a child needs both and father and mother to teach them the rules of how to live in a civil society. Each sex brings their perspective on how a child should conduct themselves.

When men & women refuse to marry, spread their seed and their legs and pop out babies, they do so because they prefer to get the free stuff from the govt. to care for them, (the women" and their spawn.) Easy money,and the man moves on or gives the woman a few bucks for diapers. Irresponsible mens & women doing what they've been doing for generations.

And yes, we must talk openly about these issues. So oboma & holder tell you you can't talk about it. The hell with them! You do not have to follow a "law" issued by a traitor to our country, a socialist/communist/marxist/muslimjihad collaborator pResident in o-u-r White House. Stand up and speak out. And, hopefully a culture will listen, learn, change their ways of living, and make something of themselves that will make them proud, instead of generational mooches and losers. oboma plays the race card to agitate and create division among the races. That's what commies do.

TO 1223 and 1225.

For his singular comment on the lack of a father in the home the reporter was fired. One singular comment. Terms like Economic and social justice and white priviledge are all code words used to justify reverse racisism, much like affirmative action. Entitlements replaced welfare.
There isnt one singular cause to criminal behavior. But it also doesnt take a village to raise a child. It takes a mother and a father. A father that teaches his children responsability. A mother that teaches her children respect. All American cultures have a segment of their populaton that has fallen into abdogating the responsability to government to teach thier children. Its like an infection that has festered and grown in the minority communities from one generation to the next. Its becoming more prevalant in the white communities.
Democrat and republican parties are not the answer. A return to teaching chidren in the home about being responsable for thier actions (having children and working) and respecting the rule of law, and each other is what is needed.
75% of the shootings in Chicago involve black people
Its time to stop asking what the government can do for you. It's time to start fixing the problems.
Restoring family values that foster responsability and respect seems a good place to start.

Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.

Report: Jersey City police face gang threats after shootings
---- 'JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- There are serious threats against police officers in northern New Jersey from gang members who want to retaliate for a deadly shooting at an all-night Walgreens drugstore Sunday morning, CBS New York station WCBS-TV reports.'
~~~~~snip ~~~~
Due to the threats, all officers must patrol in pairs and the department has stepped up security for Santiago's wake and funeral, which is scheduled for Friday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. .... New Jersey State Police and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have also warned their officers who work in Jersey City, which is across the Hudson River from New York City.
----
Plus, I heard this morning on Fox & Friends that this Lawrence Campbell mutt was a Crip, and it's the 'Crip nation' or some shit whose targeting (Green Lit) cops. New Jersey might be 800 miles away but as you guys know those Crip shitheads are everywhere.
It was a stupid comment and wildly emotional. Are fatherless homes a huge part of our nation's problems, and a huge part of decay in our families? ABSOLUTELY. But every cop knows entire families of mopes, where the kids are acting just like the father who they grew up with. His comments ignore the fact that there are men in prison for the same or worse offenses that had fathers in the home. Let's not forget the sovereign citizen dude whose son opened up on a cop during a traffic stop from the passenger side. His father was in his life. Never mind the fact he was white. This guy may have had the intention of saying something I agreed with but what he actually said was kind of dumb. If you work your way backwards from his comments he said if more black men had fathers in the home violence would not be the same. First off, that is true universally. More fathers, less problems. Secondly, it does not explain why non-black violent offenders with fathers in their lives commit violent acts. It was too emotional and more impulse than thought out.
Nobody wants to hear the truth vs being politically correct and unfortunately it turns out to be career suicide if you bring up that the problems that plague certain minority neighborhoods are partially their own fault. Family values and working hard has been replaced by single family homes with no control over the kids, gangs and some sort of state welfare.
I am as black as a Trojan Midnight and been in law enforcement since June 16, 1986 and yet I must admit that there is a nugget of truth to what this reporter is saying. Yes there is institutional racism and other obstacles in our imperfect society but no racism or hatred in hell can justify a thug murdering a police officer trying to protect community and do his job. As a noted Black conservative once wrote "Name a better place". No matter what obstacles exist in America, name a better place and go there if you can't stand America! I believe you will see the emergence of a new Black Leadership that while seeking economic and social justice is not afraid to confront this sort of pathos that exists. And I am not talking about clowns like Allen West. But I am talking about sage leaders who will confront this sickening cycle of lunacy that exists among so many poor blacks, hispanics, and whites. Yes Dammit I said it! This pathos knows no color! RIP Officer!
Not going to happen. When was the last one? Martin Luther King? The same ol same ol is gonna be happening 10 or 20 years from now. Too many 20 somethings having 10+ kids without the father present and living off the government. Maybe 6 or 7 of the kids will live to see 18 so they can vote for those Dems. This is how they keep blacks where they are while the Dems make themselves rich.
OT: FYI. For off duty officers going to Wrigley Field for the concerts this weekend, there WILL NOT be any parking in the 19th district parking garage. Parking is limited to on duty officers from 019 and officers who are detailed to work the concert. That means no off duty coppers selling tickets for the brokers or off duty cops who work at Wrigley. This weekend you will have to find alternate parking per the 019 district commander. This will be strictly enforced.
"Mr. Bergin isn't correct at all." Umm, I would rethink that statement. Turns out that in the animal kingdom, growing up without a father creates anti-social creatures who have no regard for authority. There was a study done with elephants - pack creatures just like humans - and the male elephants who grew up without a strong male role model were delinquents. Ditto for any member of the dog family (domestic dogs, wolves, etc.) Here, however, the pack exiles them and the life span of a lone wolf is very short. Point is, antisocial behavior is influenced largely by the family environment, and a single mama raising boys and whose male partners are all peripheral (and sketchy characters) will likely raise sociopaths. They may not be cop killers, but they will be dangerous.
OT but interesting: direct cut and paste to follow:
CITY HALL — A running feud between Chicago Police and city workers that write parking tickets — known as Parking Enforcement Aides — has gotten so bad that city leaders are now trying to iron things out, a watchdog report issued Thursday says.
The quarterly report from Inspector General Joseph Ferguson said an investigation into a "public screaming match ... between a PEA and a sworn police officer" laid bare "the existence of a more widespread discord" between the Police Department and the Department of Finance employees.
According to the report, "there is a perception of a rivalry between PEAs and police officers," a perception "shared by both sides and supported by online commentary." Ticket writers, it added, feel targeted for abuse by police officers, who appear to feel the PEAs "unnecessarily saturate areas with enforcement." It detected the conflict in "certain or all districts."
At one point, the conflicts prompted Department of Finance supervisors to tell their ticket writers to "avoid police officers while on duty."
The "acrimonious institutional relationship" led the Office of the Inspector General to call for a high-level meeting between the Police Department and the Department of Finance. They were urged to "clarify respective roles, acknowledge their common mission, work together in mutual recognition of shared values" and defuse "any further incident or escalation of tensions."
According to the report, city officials arrived at a plan that "strengthens their partnership and results in better service to the public." But it doesn't appear to fully settle the issue, as police officers and ticket writers are urged to report to supervisors if any new disagreement comes up.
The Mayor's Press Office, the Police Department and the Fraternal Order of Police did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
I think you should have stayed with your first impulse and NOT addressed this at all. These types of conversation are so one sided and full of blatant privilege its ridiculous to even address or even point out that no one is having these same type of conversation about the mass killings committed by white children of privilege from two parent households or moderate to high income households. No one has said, at least not on a news cast to be discussed by law enforcement as if it was a valuable comment, that the reason shooting rampages are happening in predominantly white suburban areas is because of white privilege or extreme hate, middle class values or love of gun culture. Why is that? Maybe I haven't read enough of your posts to see where you encouraged that discussion, so perhaps the benefit of the doubt should be given?
DETROIT (AP) - A young man who participated in a mob attack on a Detroit-area motorist needed a father to "beat the hell" out of him as a kid to discourage him from committing such a crime, a judge said Thursday.
The stunning remarks by Wayne County Judge James Callahan came as he sentenced Latrez Cummings to six months in jail.
In response to the judge's question, Cummings, 19, said his father wasn't around when he was growing up.
Unfortunately, as a reporter, it isn't his place to editorialize. I don't disagree with his personal thoughts, but I get the impression it wasn't part of his job to voice them.
I'm glad he WAS brave enough, or angry enough, to voice them, though. Maybe he'll write a book on the subject. (I hope so. I'd buy it just to support him, on general principle.)
7/17/2014 12:27:00 AM
7/17/2014 05:54:00 AM
It isn't right that "the MSM editorializes ALL THE TIME, by how they frame their stories", either. But, them doing it doesn't make it okay for him to do it.
If you're hired as a reporter and you don't have editorial privileges, but you go off script and voice your personal viewpoint, you can expect to be suspended or fired. It's part of your employment contract. If he voiced his personal opinion or went off-script on ANY topic, he could expect to be disciplined or fired.
Doesn't mean you and I can't agree with his comments. Just means his contract with his employer doesn't allow him to voice his comments on air.
I was watching Fox News last night and they had an African American guy on there who wrote the following book recently:
Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed Hardcover – June 17, 2014
by Jason L. Riley (Author)
It is basically a narrative of how liberal policy is perpetuating racism and does not promote accountability whatsoever. The best part about the book is that it is written by, you guessed it, an African American. The race card excuse has got to go. Praise this man.
I plan on buying it.
You are correct on many accounts, but Mr. Bergin is not claiming to be an authority on the subject. He simply had the courage to finally bring race into the spotlight for the amount of crime being committed by many people of the considered minority classes of society. The media always skips around the race of a crime suspect and I find that utterly iresponsible. It it the media's job to tell the news, not just dance around the actual problems for fear of upsetting the race baiters and the politicians who pander to the criminal just for the votes. If society is going to be a better place we must be able to speak the truth in the media and not dance around the big elephant in the room. You know as well as any one that people of all sexes and colors do not like the police, but keep it real you know the higher percentage of crimes are committed by the qoute, unquote minority part of our society. i respect Mr. Bergin for having the courage to go against the grain and tell the truth for once.
SCC,
I am as black as a Trojan Midnight and been in law enforcement since June 16, 1986 and yet I must admit that there is a nugget of truth to what this reporter is saying. Yes there is institutional racism and other obstacles in our imperfect society but no racism or hatred in hell can justify a thug murdering a police officer trying to protect community and do his job. As a noted Black conservative once wrote "Name a better place". No matter what obstacles exist in America, name a better place and go there if you can't stand America! I believe you will see the emergence of a new Black Leadership that while seeking economic and social justice is not afraid to confront this sort of pathos that exists. And I am not talking about clowns like Allen West. But I am talking about sage leaders who will confront this sickening cycle of lunacy that exists among so many poor blacks, hispanics, and whites. Yes Dammit I said it! This pathos knows no color! RIP Officer!
You my friend are totally correct. God bless you and be safe out there.
Spoken like a true liberal.... Sometimes the truth hurts, and until this is recognized along with that crap rap music that praises these actions are dealt with, it will only get worse
7/17/2014 07:42:00 AM
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Agreeing with this reporter is a contradiction to the "all they have are excuses" chants conservatives spout off everyday any you know it. Few months back SCC made a post of a study saying that people in the ghetto are inDeed suffering from PTSD. Of course everyone commented that it was just an excuse to receive more money from the government. "Not having a father" has been the basis for a slew of "excuses" themed comments on this site and for the right for years. Now it's the truth?
Excuse my language, but it's all fine and fucking dandy to lump all black men in to the same category and call it the truth, but when all cops are viewed the same, it's shoved off as hatred or being a liberal? The single parent home statistics for blacks is indeed sickening. But does that take in to consideration divorce? Or Men who raise their children but are simply not involved or living with the mother of their child?
This reporter spouted off a bold statement with no facts. No proof. Nothing. I would like to take back my statement of being pleased that he was fired. I hate to see anyone lose their job. A suspension should have been enough. I would have liked to atleast seen a news piece from him proving his statements. As for your rap comment, I don't care much for rap, but there's no proof it's the root cause to violence, police hatred or what have you , either. In 1974 for instance, Chicago tallied its highest murder total in history- Chicago police officers were also unfortunately killed during that year. In 1974, There was no such thing as hip hop at the time.
Being a sperm donor does not make for being a real father. Many inner city yutes must turn to older gang bangers for any type of guidance, and we've all seen too well where that puts them. Holder can talk about racism all he wants, he still doesn't have a clue in regards to solving the "problem". There are no real black leaders, just race baiters, out to enrich themselves. God forbid, the problem ends. The make believe reverunds might have to do an honest days work.
(OT) called deferred comp for advice but of course they could not answer my question about the comp plan. If you keep your money in Chicago blended option is it guaranteed by the fed? Like a bank account? Is that money tied to how the city invests? Can the city get ahold of that money? Last question I'm 100% in fixed getting 2.75% return I know we have smart people on here any advice on asset allocation? Thanks. Any funds in the plan that are good investments?
7/17/2014 04:47:00 PM
The current fixed rate is 2.97%. Having said that, I would suggest you get a financial adviser.
Unfortunately, as a reporter, it isn't his place to editorialize. I don't disagree with his personal thoughts, but I get the impression it wasn't part of his job to voice them.
I'm glad he WAS brave enough, or angry enough, to voice them, though. Maybe he'll write a book on the subject. (I hope so. I'd buy it just to support him, on general principle.)
7/17/2014 12:27:00 AM
To the person asking about deferred comp. Get out of it!!! It is not separate from the city like you think...When you signed up for deferred comp, did you have a choice on which company? ? No it was pebsco or nationwide depending on when you were hired. .
Don't forget..you haven't been taxed on that money yet. Sure you save a little in the year that you pay into the account but you will be taxed on all the growth. There are many more reasons not to participate in a 457 plan but I won't bore you
Rahm, JJ, sr, the store front rev' sell their souls. Preckwinkle and Lewis are no better and will further chase white folks out of the county and state.
Some one with balls to take the helm is needed. The president and his attorney general just play the card as usual.
People of all races better get their shit together and unite against the evil on the street.
I am white and lived in this great city from day one.
Not only will you be taxed on all the growth,but you will be taxed on all the money you contributed. That money can be substantial after 10 or 20 years.
Also another important point most po's aren't aware of. If you are in any of the stock funds, when you withdraw the money it is taxed as ordinary income at 25%(because with our pension,that is the bracket we are in when we retire),not at the capital gains rate of 15% so you forfeit the advantage of the capital gains rate.
If you plan on staying with a fixed income, no other IRA ,bank or anyone else beats the 2.97%. City is higher than county plan. As far as stocks funds,bottom line its a crapshoot. NO ONE knows, period. If there was a guaranteed fund, everyone would be in it.
Any investment show will have the TOP worldwide advisers and ask their opinion on stocks or mutual funds. Usually half will like the fund or stock, the other half won't If the top guys dont know,no one knows.
Just yesterday they shot a plane down in the Ukraine and the stock market dropped.
Family values on display here.
The skilled team of four female black urban retail thieves hit the Gold Coast and Belmont Ave. American Apparel stores on Wednesday evening taking thousands in merchandise and left a shorty waiting in the parked getaway car.
Of course, this wasn't reported on local news outlets lest anyone suspect that blacks commit such crimes while a baby was left in a car.
Probably no car seat either.
From a troll: Bergin is right of course. No brainer. He does not include all of the "cultural" events of the so called community that results in the no snitch code that makes Englewood the anti police hell hole that it is but lets face it; women cannot be the sole role model for boys and it is not only with black boys. I see plenty of white boys in my extended family where the only parent model is the mother and these boys are on the losing end of a lot of experiences I learned from having my dad in the house. We folks, are dealing with the 1965 policies of the Great Society liberal sociologists that were bull shit then and have resulted in the meat grinder you folks deal with every day in the city. Stay safe and know that the media only reports the sensational, they forget about the average citizens of all colors and creeds who do support the police. And I bet there are some in Englewood, just not nearly enough.
I'm on the job,have 20 plus years and grew up, lived and worked in these "shit areas"! It all starts at home, being taught what's right and wrong whether having a father or not! I do agree to some extent. THERE ARE A LOT OF FUCKING ASSHOLES OUT THERE, BUT WE'RE TOO CAUGHT UP IN RACE! I'll go to war with any of you white, black or other!Straight up and down OLD SCHOOL!!!!! Assholes are just that and as long as you attempt to stop them from doing whatever the hell they want, they're going to hate police!THAT'S EVERY RACE ! Let's protect ourselves , families and each other because no one else will. We're all we have, so bring back the comradery and let's get through this! Please save if any dumb ignorant comments. Isn't it nice when reporters actually acknowledge the good work that the police do and what we are up against? Instead we have a bunch of ungrateful coppers nitpicking what he did and how he did it, instead of appreciate it in him being in our corner. All of the whining here on the blog about liberal reporters and their based stories, and yet when one tells the truth, we all come out of the woodwork to criticize. I friended Sean on Facebook and saw how many civilian supporters he had, but yet the police, whom he defended, all have to put in their 2 cents about how he was wrong. What a bunch of weak ass coppers we are our own worst enemies!
he didn't "speak the truth". Black men are apart of their children's lives just as much as any other race according to the CDC. As a matter of fact , between white, black, and Latino fathers in America, neither race has a huge advantage over the other(neither race falls below the 50% line of father involvement, and I think it stated neither race exceeds 80% in father involvement)when it comes down to being involved in their children's lives. The 72% of fatherless children in the black community is taken out of context. That figure represents children born out of wedlock, not black children who are fatherless.
"Mr. Bergin isn't correct at all. Lots of people hate
police for a variety of reasons: ignorance (being taught that by the adults that raise them), and, something we cops are loath to discuss: abuses.
Beatings, being robbed of their ill gotten gains (drug proceeds) by police...the list goes on.
I know that I've had to pull traffic stops on more than a few people who turned out to be relatives/spouses of police as well. Many of them had serious contempt for law enforcement as well. i will point out that these were people of both sexes and all races. What's the reason for that? One could speculate on a number of reasons, all of which could have some validity, but none of which might be a good answer. I'm no authority on the reasons why there exists so much enmity between some citizens and police, and neither is Mr. Bergin. I don't want to see the guy lose his job, but he was wrong, even irresponsible for him to even attempt to come off as an authority on the subject."
Are you joking or a police impersonator? Any working officer sees the truth in Bergin's observations.
