Officer Hit by Car
Stable at last report - suspect was shot during the incident:
- A Chicago police officer was hit by a car and the suspect shot on the Near West Side Saturday night, officials said.
The incident took place about 10:12 p.m. in the 2300 block of West Lake Street, according to said Police News Affairs [...].
The officer's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, Gaines said. The officer was struck by a vehicle and police fired shots, hitting a suspect, who was shot in the leg.....

The Trib has an update: Officers were on the scene "trying to calm down" numerous persons who claimed to be relatives of the man shot by police. That's right, they weren't upset at their son/brother/nephew for dealing, or for trying to run over the cops -- they were upset with the cops and threatening a riot because the cops dared to defend themselves from their relative's deadly intent. Unbelievable.

There was an officer attending to the offenders wounds with a field trauma kit, that's right the offender, not the victim officer , but the guy who tried to kill him. An ambulance was called for the offender, but this clown took it upon himself to treat the offender, cut away clothing etc. Now I understand if it was a 5year old caught in gang crossfire, or an innocent bystander. Seriously! The Victim Officer was on the ground in serious pain, with officers trying to comfort him before the ambulance came, and this FTO from 18 was attending to the Offender...wtf were are your priorities officer? Bypassing an officer down and treating the offender..unreal.

Great to read the officer is in stable condition. We responded from 018 to 2358 W. Lake St., arriving on scene with many other officers, walked a block to the address leaving a clear path to the crime scene, sought out any assistance we could render, still looking for EMS arrival. the clock was more then ten minutes, probably 15. Still no CFD. Were they confused by the incompetent dispatch broadcasting the wrong address repeatedly?
Levy an income tax on people who live outside crook county and earn their living in Chicago!

Perhaps the injured officer was receiving appropriate aid already. It sucks to be us, but you do know we are required to render aid to injured parties, right? And, since people like you feel the need to publicly report every little detail of what goes on at a scene, that would make it impossible to ignore an injured offender. Think about it, or have a friend explain it to you.

I agree with always addressing ourselves first but you clearly do not know shit about first aid... the officer had no visible injuries that we're applicable to an IFAK and you can't fucking treat "serious pain" or hemiagioma's, which he turned out to have, with an IFAK. Gun shot wounds however....well that's what they're made for. Giving medical aid to a shit head is a judgement call that I don't necessarily agree with but bypassing? No. There was no bypassing. Don't try to bad mouth one of our own with your misguided logic.

Unless u received EMT training then you should not touch the offender. Render aid by police means request an ambulance. That's what they r trained to do.

Regarding the FTO from 018 using his IFAK to aid the shit-bag. I wasn't there and don't know any of the details other than what I read here. If the officer could not be helped by the IFAK and I had the chance to practice on a shit-bag, I'd do it. As much training as I've done, I'll take real world, hands on training any day. Do you think the Navy Dr's that are coming to work in Stroger intend on only working on good guys? Not how it works.

THANK YOU. I was waiting for someone to respond to this post who has some common sense. We are first responders, period. We are supposed to render aid. I for one don't want to be seen on camera doing absolutely nothing but standing by while someone dies, be it another officer or the shithead who received deadly force from one of our own. You may not think much about it at the time, but rest assured, when a civil trial ensues about that incident (and if it's a police shooting, it will), you better be able to 'explain your inaction' as that tape is played in front of a civil jury.

I understand your anger during the heat of the moment and concern for the officer, but what the hell could the officer attending to the offender have did for the injured officer? His job is to aid the injured. According to you plenty of officers were by the side of the injured officer, and the other guy was also doing his job. Please take your head out of the sand. The only reason MLB has fewer players on drugs is that after years of rampant abuse, the league finally had to revamp its testing policy. And please do not confuse being "class act" at press conferences the same thing as being classy in real life. Many of these guys are drunken sleazeballs who cheat on their wives in every city they travel to--a girl in every port, so to speak.

First off, treating the injured is exactly what makes us better the animals. US medics/Corpsmen downrange treat the enemy. This is all the more true if the injured officer was already receiving aid or did not have injuries that could be treated with an IFAK. Even if there wasn't a moral, ethical reason to treat him, do you think you are doing the officers who shot him a favor by letting him die? That is idiotic. Finally, live tissue training is valuable. Working on that shithead just upped his game for when/if he DOES ever have to work on a good guy. I'm willing to bet that this guy knew he would have to listen to all the whining, wailing, and gnashing of teeth of all the "real police" out there, but rendered aid because it was the right thing to do. Sounds like character to me.
