Missed This One

  • As summer waned in recent weeks, bringing to an end what is often the most violent season of the year, New York City officials tallied 239 people killed in homicides. Los Angeles police counted 201 killed in about the same time period.

But in Chicago, a city whose population is dwarfed by both major coastal cities, the death toll is far more grim, with 325 killed in homicides by Sept. 6.

The numbers tell a tragic, nagging story for Chicago: Violence here far outpaces the nation's two larger cities, and has for more than a decade.

Tribune reporters recently spent time in both New York and Los Angeles to try to understand what led to their steep reduction in violent crime and how those efforts might apply here. The answers are complex. Not even criminologists agree.
Hey, some reporters got a free trip! But the attached articles are sort of interesting in that you can see the bastardized versions of NY and LA style policing that has been cobbled together here in Chicago and how the short-sighted and half-assed on-the-cheap efforts have doomed each of the efforts.

Maybe it's time to bring back a citywide response unit....oh wait, we're 3,000 officers short of what we were in 1999. Guess that isn't happening.

And the countdown to 400 killings continues.

Not where "reporters" live.

Why not?

The reporters, I mean.

They will never admit that getting rid of the Tru unit was a major mistake. But, the have slowly tried to make up for it (without admitting their mistake) by starting more Saturation teams. There used to be 1 then 2 Sat teams at Deputy Chief level so he could move around people in his area as needed. Now there are 4-5 teams in just Central alone. Remember when Garry said that the beat car was backbone of patrol?

Here's a start to improving CPD:

Stop all this mission based policing. They want a "mission" and a mission number for everything. No one should be held down or put in a box for Amy type of mission.

Put gang teams back in Districts - under district control. Worked a lot better when u had tact / gang teams assigned at district level.

Let the commanders run their own districts without having to run to a weekly meeting to be berated like little kids. Tracking crime and stats is fine - but loosen up and let them run shit as THEY seem fit. With input from Officers and supervisors.

Put Capt's. Back as W/c. - Field Lt's - and bring back desk Sgt. DSS is probably worst idea this regime came up with.

Finally, publicly put most of the responsibility for the violence where it belongs - on the people who failed to raise these kids with any sense of morals or decency. Also hold judges responsible for letting these animals run loose

The bottom line is you can't do policing on the cheap. You need a mayor and a superintendent that are committed to law enforcement at a basic level. Both currently lack this. Da mayor is driven by higher aspirations and rewarding his campaign contributors.
The soup cooks crime numbers and spouts bullshit that wows the clueless media. Veteran officers are leaving in historic numbers. CPD will not recover from this multi-prong attack for a decade. Those that hang on will wish they have left sooner. Policing is almost dead in Chicago. Just treading water. This is what happens when the voters are uninformed. You get what you think you want.

Everyone knows that Crimes Strategies take time to work, If you look at past superintendants, they normally built upon or added successful strategies of their predecessors. MCcarthy ignored this and eliminated TRU, MSF and changed the mission of narcotics from street corner conspiracies to dime bag buy bust search warrants. He replaced the citywide unit with oT initiatives resulting in officers being deployed to areas who have little knowledge of the area they are in, the actors etc. ... thus turning you into scarecrows for a particlar block. Another reason is they taken the ability of the beat officer to truly manage his beat due to the fact they all they do is chase 911 calls from rap. Simply put they need to hire more officers. Shame on you Garry for not standing up to the mayor and having the officers backs.

Actually they do know something about crime, its causes, but not as much as they think they do. The sheeple of Chicago take our 400 person murder rate per capita against 3 million people. That is not a fair statistic at all. In reality if you crammed the six districts or so together that make up this weekly blood bath and took a head count of 400 murders vs probably .5 million (or less) that murder per capita would take on a whole new meaning. More likely genocide.

Also why does the Police Department OWN these murders and attack the Commanders on down. These murders are not our fault yet at CompStat we own them as if we ourselves are contributing. Stop taking credit for the acts of what amounts to savagery. These murders (for the most part) are NOT PREVENTABLE. These crazy motherfuckers will shoot as soon as they see the squad's taillights. Stop owning these murders and place the blame where it belongs, on the animals destroying their own. Grow some cajones and tell it like it is. A gang banging demographic of this city are out of control and only will respond to extreme violence; not a tummy rub and "hug a thug" classes.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man convicted of helping to buy more than 40 guns in Indiana and then transporting them for sale on the streets of Chicago has been sentenced to just over three years in prison.
A Thursday statement from the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago says 25-year-old Winston Geralds purchased the weapons at gun shows in Indianapolis and Crown Point, Indiana. A Chicago buyer was cooperating with federal agents.
The government's sentencing memorandum says Geralds "very directly contributed to the cycle of gun violence" in Chicago.
Geralds pleaded guilty in May to one count of illegally transporting firearms across state lines. U.S. District Judge John Lee sentenced him in federal court in Chicago. .
Five others have also been charged in the case.

Bobbie, we have the most violent monsters in the country, that's why we need more police. We also need cops to take care of mommy calling because babygurl is disrespectin huh and other nonsense just like that. If you ever worked in a police car for one night, you'd realize that the shit storm never ends. Funny thing is, we're down lots of PO's but, I see coppers like they're free in the ghetto. In the lower crime rate communities, they're down one third over the last 15 years. Yes, that's right, one third less police in nice areas. If anyone ever computed the ACTUAL cost to the taxpayers for these neighborhoods, there'd be taxpayer riots. I'm not just speaking of police costs, it's everything, hospitals, fire service, rent subsidies, education, food stamps, cash given to families, utility bill help, streets and san to pick up the litter dropped on the street, abandoned cars, the cost of incarcerating the criminals, tearing down of abandoned buildings and unemployment insurance. The bill would be staggering and no one will ever do it because the good liberals would finally get pissed off about what they've made.

The article is ridiculous but how do you respond to the per capita calculations which show Chicago having a higher percentage of officers than New York City and way more than LA?

Yes, but are they taking into account county police which also police the areas? Just asking.

The other day a body was found burnt up in the trunk of a car that was set on fire. The RD#s obtained? Agg Arson for the car; Death Investigation. They'll probably hold that one for reclassification too.

Densey has received a huge amount of help from the Police Memorial Foundation ever since his accident. In fact, he received a state grant through an application the CPMF made him aware of and filled out for him. There are quite a few people watching out for his best interests. Reciprocation from him would be nice however. He has been less than cooperative with CPMF. Granted, due to his extreme trauma, you can understand he may have issues trusting or understanding people. However, he is also getting pulled from all sides by a lot of people who do not necessarily have his best interests at heart, as you can imagine when money is involved

In 1995 13,344 on CPD 824 murders

In 2010 12,515 432 murders

And what was medical science like in 1995 compared to 2010 or even today. Take advanced medical science and more cops doing proactive policing (something frowned upon) and that 432 number might be halved.

And Garry said I WILL NOT HIRE.........We have plenty and we don't need any more cause when it's cold we don't need em only when its warm out............What a Douche Bag

10/01/2015 08:01:00 PM

Why would he hire anyone when he has enough coppers working every overtime chance they can get. The Police are their own worse enemy! The city is saving a ton of money and the pension is even less funded by doing work that additional officers should be doing. I know, "everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I get my share"? Or, "I can't afford not to"! It is freaking, unbelievable! No wonder that rahm and mcgoof are laughing their asses off... Too many over educated white collar assholes in a blue collar job.

In 2010 12,515 432 murders

Anyway you cut it more police in 1995 almost DOUBLE the murders

Read the article and the graph

1st of all, back then we were probably short about 700 P.Os to the total of 13,500. Today we re short almost 4000 to the total of 12,500. The district avged about 330 p.o.s to the 25 districts. Now most districts are under 200 with tact and gangs always on the west side.
2nd almost all of the projects are gone and the black population in the city is down 200k.But what u really have to compare is the # of people shot. Because of better trauma care more lives have been saved.Plus if u can t find a cop anywhere how are u suppose to report a crime. And if its a part 1 crime, it will be killed into a lesser crime thus better stats.

Reduce the number of people assigned to district mission teams, such as Tac and RBT. Change it where Tac and RBT actually do paper. Mysteriously when its an arrest they do paper. So why not help out when there's a backlog?! The "tactitude" where theyre some non bureau of patrol non district law enforcement elite unit is pushed too much. They're not detectives and they do the same case reports, formerly called the GOCR, as the blue boys do. Get rid of 024's 2464 and 2465 teams. Stop hiding people citywide on district level RBT teams. Reduce the tac teams by at least one or reduce the number of people on each team. If Tac or another district level mission team on views a non arrest paper job they handle it. Stop wasting manpower.

Hey 1:43

So you pull up staffing numbers for 2010 and then say there is no way we are down 3000 police.
It's 2015, five years of under hiring later.
STRIKE 1

Murders in 2010 are roughly half they were in 1995. Again, we are in 2015 and have been above 500 at least once in that tiny insignificant five year period.
STRIKE 2

Shootings are still sky high, less people are murdered because medical technology coupled with numerous cell phones able to call 911 immediately have saved many lives. Likewise twenty years ago many more people died of heart attacks and cancer than do now.
STRIKE 3

Yer out! Go BS somewhere else

He just crawled in there to try to see where the smoke was coming from. Taillight wire shorted or something.

Accidental.

Short 4,000 to the total of 12,500 NEVER has the CPD had 16,500
12,500 is the figure a little lower now days. CLEAR and pension board will verify the current number of sworn personnel is a little over 12,000 No conspiracy there.

During the Fop election Tom McDonough was telling everyone that Dean was scamming and should be working light duty. Then Dean wins the election and brings McDonough inside to work in the office. Nothing, but stand up guys working at Fop. I do agree that all the pension board trustees should be putting Dean back to work. He should not be allowed to steal from our fund.

Why are you so worried about what other people do and don't do? Just worry about yourself. That is the biggest problem in our department. People who care what others do or don't do.

Hello Spike Lee you have not even released first chiraq film and we have at least 4 sequels ready to go! obama comes on TV talking about cities and states would most gun laws are safer, then news says Chicago has most gun laws of any state and most shootings and killings! Hypocrite, obamas home town we should have cash flowing to policing, to fund police pensions, when George Bush was the last real president his hometown of Crawford Texas was flush with cash, flush with police protection, presidents that are competent protect their hometowns to show how proud they are, but guess not this 1!

Why is gary still employed? the gold star club? they need to have a shakeup and immediately because innocents are getting shoot and murdered everyday in chiraq! If this was a company they would of been long gone!

I heard a LOT of people trying to bid out.
They must be tired of playing ring around the roses with his goofy ass trying to micro manage everyone
