Missed This One
- As summer waned in recent weeks, bringing to an end what is often the most violent season of the year, New York City officials tallied 239 people killed in homicides. Los Angeles police counted 201 killed in about the same time period.
But in Chicago, a city whose population is dwarfed by both major coastal cities, the death toll is far more grim, with 325 killed in homicides by Sept. 6.
The numbers tell a tragic, nagging story for Chicago: Violence here far outpaces the nation's two larger cities, and has for more than a decade.
Tribune reporters recently spent time in both New York and Los Angeles to try to understand what led to their steep reduction in violent crime and how those efforts might apply here. The answers are complex. Not even criminologists agree.
Hey, some reporters got a free trip! But the attached articles are sort of interesting in that you can see the bastardized versions of NY and LA style policing that has been cobbled together here in Chicago and how the short-sighted and half-assed on-the-cheap efforts have doomed each of the efforts.
Maybe it's time to bring back a citywide response unit....oh wait, we're 3,000 officers short of what we were in 1999. Guess that isn't happening.
And the countdown to 400 killings continues.

..let alone you could simply clear a corner, 60 loud, idle, hostile men outside Shooting Range Liquors at noon threatening passers-by "have civil rights."
Not where "reporters" live.
Why not?
The reporters, I mean.
Why?
I don't believe for one bit that New York's numbers are that low either. The birth place of COMSTAT and everythng is legit?

You guys are just mere "public servants
and don't you forget it!
The citizens of Chicago are getting the kind of police force, that the city government they elected wants.
Who freaking cares. Lets get back to 1991 when the murder rate surpassed 900
If only there were more jobs made available to inner city youths so that they can become productive citizens would the killings stop. They would be too tired working an 8hr day, 40hr work week, I mean 28hr work week, that there would be no time for gangbanging. Wait, who am I kidding.
The powers-that-be are definitely welcoming this cool weather.
Boy is the media dumb! THE CPD IS MASSIVELY SHORT POLICE OFFICERS! The city stopped hiring years ago under Daley and manpower has been crushed! There's your answer. Very simple and easy to research. We desperately need more police officers.
Will Pres Obama and AG Lynch bail out Rahm again by sending him some more Feds?
BTW, How did that work out last time?
Did you yokels learn anything from the professional federal law enforcement officers?
If Rahm and Garry get lucky, Baltimore will take the Murder Capital Crown.
Especially if the judge is honest and throws out most of the unsupported charges against the six Baltimore police officers before the end of the year.
It would be helpful if the states attorneys and judges would throw some sand in the gears for the revolving door.
How about actually locking the thugs up? You can't kill anyone on the street if your ass is parked in jail.
Maybe off topic? But an open letter to the mayor.
Dear Rahm,
You don't have the Fuckn balls to layoff 2000 police officers.
Always around,
Chalkie
You've got to look at the % of minorities in these areas. Since "they" are both the victims and offenders of violent crime.
Another tax increase in Shitcago should fix this problem.
Is the Mexican drug cartel in Chicago importing guns as well as drugs. Is the CPD engaged in a full frontal attack on this cartel? Why not?
Our City is totally controlled by democrats. Democrats are traditionally soft on crime. Chicago's democrat political machine is ultra soft on crime and anti-police. live with it.
They will never admit that getting rid of the Tru unit was a major mistake. But, the have slowly tried to make up for it (without admitting their mistake) by starting more Saturation teams. There used to be 1 then 2 Sat teams at Deputy Chief level so he could move around people in his area as needed. Now there are 4-5 teams in just Central alone. Remember when Garry said that the beat car was backbone of patrol?
Here's a start to improving CPD:
Stop all this mission based policing. They want a "mission" and a mission number for everything. No one should be held down or put in a box for Amy type of mission.
Put gang teams back in Districts - under district control. Worked a lot better when u had tact / gang teams assigned at district level.
Let the commanders run their own districts without having to run to a weekly meeting to be berated like little kids. Tracking crime and stats is fine - but loosen up and let them run shit as THEY seem fit. With input from Officers and supervisors.
Put Capt's. Back as W/c. - Field Lt's - and bring back desk Sgt. DSS is probably worst idea this regime came up with.
Finally, publicly put most of the responsibility for the violence where it belongs - on the people who failed to raise these kids with any sense of morals or decency. Also hold judges responsible for letting these animals run loose
I'm so sick of hearing about what criminologists think. They don't know a fucking thing about police, crime or the causes. They are theorists. They don't live and work in reality, much less make split second decisions. What's most dangerous though, is politicians and the media listen to these fools. Never submit to a survey or questionnaire again.
You called it. Now try to convince Rahm.

Hope people are not really thinking of supporting this guy. Would be nice to see national FOP putting out a statement on it
And what the hell is a city wide response unit going to do? Can't stop anyone anymore. Game Over. ACLU has won. Legalize all drugs. Tax it.
The bottom line is you can't do policing on the cheap. You need a mayor and a superintendent that are committed to law enforcement at a basic level. Both currently lack this. Da mayor is driven by higher aspirations and rewarding his campaign contributors.
The soup cooks crime numbers and spouts bullshit that wows the clueless media. Veteran officers are leaving in historic numbers. CPD will not recover from this multi-prong attack for a decade. Those that hang on will wish they have left sooner. Policing is almost dead in Chicago. Just treading water. This is what happens when the voters are uninformed. You get what you think you want.
Put that genius reporter on the Garrys in house think tank! Everybody who has never cuffed a sweating method head has an opinion on how to fix everything. The problem is "I GOTZ MY RIGHTS".
How about putting all tact and gang teams back on the watch to answer calls. Enough of this whole team down on a gun arrest..
Inspector hiding in the halls of 26/Cal this morning trying to pick off coppers on their way to court. Just another incentive to go to court.
OT: How the fuck can Dean run the FOP but not work the desk at 311? It makes zero sense to be from a disability standpoint. Either you can work the desk or you can't. Either disabled or not. It makes no sense. Too sick to work the desk but you can run FOP? What a scam and Dean is doing it right under our noses. Unreal.
During the Fop election Tom McDonough was telling everyone that Dean was scamming and should be working light duty. Then Dean wins the election and brings McDonough inside to work in the office. Nothing, but stand up guys working at Fop. I do agree that all the pension board trustees should be putting Dean back to work. He should not be allowed to steal from our fund.
How this one? Copper on extended medical working a side job, with his bosses knowledge !
Everyone knows that Crimes Strategies take time to work, If you look at past superintendants, they normally built upon or added successful strategies of their predecessors. MCcarthy ignored this and eliminated TRU, MSF and changed the mission of narcotics from street corner conspiracies to dime bag buy bust search warrants. He replaced the citywide unit with oT initiatives resulting in officers being deployed to areas who have little knowledge of the area they are in, the actors etc. ... thus turning you into scarecrows for a particlar block. Another reason is they taken the ability of the beat officer to truly manage his beat due to the fact they all they do is chase 911 calls from rap. Simply put they need to hire more officers. Shame on you Garry for not standing up to the mayor and having the officers backs.

Agreed 100%. Maybe, just maybe we should try thinking INSIDE of the box again instead of "ouside the box."
when and it they every let the dogs lose, bring back the fucken task force. I know its wishful thinking but what the hey.
McFailure.
I liked the guns displayed the table for the media. So, who was armed with the musket??
Why would any of you pos come up with plans to try an stop the violence. That's the big shots job (you know the bosses promoted by clout)and they are doing it so well. For me and all the other blue shirts its called job security. Let the mayhem continue.

Actually they do know something about crime, its causes, but not as much as they think they do. The answers have been out there for decades, but the political class ignore them because they do not want to spend the money , the time or the effort. And, in some cases as long as the crime stays in the black community they donot care.
You missed one thing, the article also stated we have 12,000 police officers again miss information put out to the public. I wish the Tribune and Sun times get their facts checked before print it.
How about actually locking the thugs up? You can't kill anyone on the street if your ass is parked in jail.

This would make the black caucus in Springfield and Tony Preckwinkle extremely unhappy.
Ok all this violence aside lets get to important things on the cpd. MAKE SURE YOU GET A LUNCH EVENT #
I know I'm on the wrong thread but perhaps someone can help out or expand on a story. What is the real story with the paralyzed officer Densey Cole? It seems to me that the CPD & CFD always do a great job watching out for one of their own & with not a lot of public outcry about Officer Cole's predicament it makes me think that there is something altogether wrong with this case.True News USA took down the ability to even comment on this story. Is their someone who is willing to expand a little more about Officer Cole?
Chicago....City of Mayhem
Should be on our city stickers
Just say'n...
Stop and search. Stop and Search.
OT: was at a call yesterday and looking around as our complainant was giving her story. Low and behold found a letter from a previous encounter with CPD from this person signed by yours truly Gary Mccarthy asking how the service from the officer she encountered was. It labeled the encounter as an incident report, traffic stop and one other situation I can't recall. Gave a website and PIN to give her opinion and ratings of the officer (s) involved.
Maybe it's time to bring back a citywide response unit....oh wait, we're 3,000 officers short of what we were in 1999. Guess that isn't happening.
And the countdown to 400 killings continues.
Thats great When we bring back the 3,000 officers maybe we can bring back the 900 plus murders annually during the 90's
Little stat nobody wants to hear about police staffing and murders. Always about more police. and no way is the CPD 3,000 short
In 1995 13,344 on CPD 824 murders
In 2010 12,515 432 murders
Anyway you cut it more police in 1995 almost DOUBLE the murders

In that case, he was arrested in 2012, convicted earlier this year and sentenced on Aug. 13 to six years in prison. Alvarado received credit for the three years he spent in Cook County Jail awaiting trial and was released on parole Aug. 14."
Compstat works.
I'd rather get laid off then pay more in taxes!
Just saw the off duty Fireman who was on a movie set at 48th and kimbark and, saw a house on fire and got the occupants to safety.. good job.
While he was being interviewed by Channel 9 I observed that his neck was covered in tattoos. Does CFD have to cover up their tattoos? Or is it just CPD?
No, I don't have tattoos.
Small potatos:we used to have 900+.
The article is ridiculous but how do you respond to the per capita calculations which show Chicago having a higher percentage of officers?
http://www.governing.com/gov-data/safety-justice/police-officers-per-capita-rates-employment-for-city-departments.html
Big changes coming next two weeks, if your called to the 5th floor its to decide to either retire or go back to LT. Its not a call to tell you what a great job you've been doing.
The article is ridiculous but how do you respond to the per capita calculations which show Chicago having a higher percentage of officers than New York City and way more than LA?
http://www.governing.com/gov-data/safety-justice/police-officers-per-capita-rates-employment-for-city-departments.html
The sheeple of Chicago take our 400 person murder rate per capita against 3 million people. That is not a fair statistic at all. In reality if you crammed the six districts or so together that make up this weekly blood bath and took a head count of 400 murders vs probably .5 million (or less) that murder per capita would take on a whole new meaning. More likely genocide.
Also why does the Police Department OWN these murders and attack the Commanders on down. These murders are not our fault yet at CompStat we own them as if we ourselves are contributing. Stop taking credit for the acts of what amounts to savagery. These murders (for the most part) are NOT PREVENTABLE. These crazy motherfuckers will shoot as soon as they see the squad's taillights. Stop owning these murders and place the blame where it belongs, on the animals destroying their own. Grow some cajones and tell it like it is. A gang banging demographic of this city are out of control and only will respond to extreme violence; not a tummy rub and "hug a thug" classes.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago man convicted of helping to buy more than 40 guns in Indiana and then transporting them for sale on the streets of Chicago has been sentenced to just over three years in prison.
A Thursday statement from the U.S. Attorney's office in Chicago says 25-year-old Winston Geralds purchased the weapons at gun shows in Indianapolis and Crown Point, Indiana. A Chicago buyer was cooperating with federal agents.
The government's sentencing memorandum says Geralds "very directly contributed to the cycle of gun violence" in Chicago.
Geralds pleaded guilty in May to one count of illegally transporting firearms across state lines. U.S. District Judge John Lee sentenced him in federal court in Chicago. .
Five others have also been charged in the case.
Hey Deano! How can you - in clear conscience - be the "Active" FOP retiree working as our President? Look at the atrocious way the city is treating a truly "disabled" PO {Densey Cole} and you stand by doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! You could at least assign one of the other FOP officers to help this good man & fellow officer. i 'm sure that Frank DeMaria would help him as best he can if he got a directive from you. Your tenure as our President has been atrocious. If you won't help Densey & his former PO Mother-at least assign one of your highly paid minions to do the right thing!
Don't forget the Arson/double murder from 008 a few weeks ago. That hasn't been reclassified to a 0110 IUCR-Homicide. Why not? The fire dept has said gas was found at the home and a gas can was recovered too. Funny how the dicks are keeping a double from the count!!!
Thank goodness for some of the strongest gun control laws in the country.......can you imagine the number of shootings without them.

Bobbie, we have the most violent monsters in the country, that's why we need more police. We also need cops to take care of mommy calling because babygurl is disrespectin huh and other nonsense just like that. If you ever worked in a police car for one night, you'd realize that the shit storm never ends. Funny thing is, we're down lots of PO's but, I see coppers like they're free in the ghetto. In the lower crime rate communities, they're down one third over the last 15 years. Yes, that's right, one third less police in nice areas. If anyone ever computed the ACTUAL cost to the taxpayers for these neighborhoods, there'd be taxpayer riots. I'm not just speaking of police costs, it's everything, hospitals, fire service, rent subsidies, education, food stamps, cash given to families, utility bill help, streets and san to pick up the litter dropped on the street, abandoned cars, the cost of incarcerating the criminals, tearing down of abandoned buildings and unemployment insurance. The bill would be staggering and no one will ever do it because the good liberals would finally get pissed off about what they've made.

There is more to this story and it is not in favor of D.C.

Frankly I don't care how many gang bangers kill themselves. If you are happy with police not responding to the other calls, say so. No police for traffic? You're OK? No police for ANY patrols in the taxpayers neighborhoods? You're good? There aren't enough police for the people that want police protection. That's all there is to it.

Said the bitch under Gary's desk.
The other day a body was found burnt up in the trunk of a car that was set on fire. The RD#s obtained? Agg Arson for the car; Death Investigation. They'll probably hold that one for reclassification too.
Densey has received a huge amount of help from the Police Memorial Foundation ever since his accident. In fact, he received a state grant through an application the CPMF made him aware of and filled out for him. There are quite a few people watching out for his best interests. Reciprocation from him would be nice however. He has been less than cooperative with CPMF. Granted, due to his extreme trauma, you can understand he may have issues trusting or understanding people. However, he is also getting pulled from all sides by a lot of people who do not necessarily have his best interests at heart, as you can imagine when money is involved
In 1995 13,344 on CPD 824 murders
In 2010 12,515 432 murders
And what was medical science like in 1995 compared to 2010 or even today. Take advanced medical science and more cops doing proactive policing (something frowned upon) and that 432 number might be halved.

Why would he hire anyone when he has enough coppers working every overtime chance they can get. The Police are their own worse enemy! The city is saving a ton of money and the pension is even less funded by doing work that additional officers should be doing. I know, "everyone else is doing it so why shouldn't I get my share"? Or, "I can't afford not to"! It is freaking, unbelievable! No wonder that rahm and mcgoof are laughing their asses off... Too many over educated white collar assholes in a blue collar job.

1st of all, back then we were probably short about 700 P.Os to the total of 13,500. Today we re short almost 4000 to the total of 12,500. The district avged about 330 p.o.s to the 25 districts. Now most districts are under 200 with tact and gangs always on the west side.
2nd almost all of the projects are gone and the black population in the city is down 200k.But what u really have to compare is the # of people shot. Because of better trauma care more lives have been saved.Plus if u can t find a cop anywhere how are u suppose to report a crime. And if its a part 1 crime, it will be killed into a lesser crime thus better stats.
Reduce the number of people assigned to district mission teams, such as Tac and RBT. Change it where Tac and RBT actually do paper. Mysteriously when its an arrest they do paper. So why not help out when there's a backlog?! The "tactitude" where theyre some non bureau of patrol non district law enforcement elite unit is pushed too much. They're not detectives and they do the same case reports, formerly called the GOCR, as the blue boys do. Get rid of 024's 2464 and 2465 teams. Stop hiding people citywide on district level RBT teams. Reduce the tac teams by at least one or reduce the number of people on each team. If Tac or another district level mission team on views a non arrest paper job they handle it. Stop wasting manpower.
Hey 1:43
So you pull up staffing numbers for 2010 and then say there is no way we are down 3000 police.
It's 2015, five years of under hiring later.
STRIKE 1
Murders in 2010 are roughly half they were in 1995. Again, we are in 2015 and have been above 500 at least once in that tiny insignificant five year period.
STRIKE 2
Shootings are still sky high, less people are murdered because medical technology coupled with numerous cell phones able to call 911 immediately have saved many lives. Likewise twenty years ago many more people died of heart attacks and cancer than do now.
STRIKE 3
Yer out! Go BS somewhere else

Short 4,000 to the total of 12,500 NEVER has the CPD had 16,500
12,500 is the figure a little lower now days. CLEAR and pension board will verify the current number of sworn personnel is a little over 12,000 No conspiracy there.

Why are you so worried about what other people do and don't do? Just worry about yourself. That is the biggest problem in our department. People who care what others do or don't do.
9:07 am Well Said!!!
Hello Spike Lee you have not even released first chiraq film and we have at least 4 sequels ready to go! obama comes on TV talking about cities and states would most gun laws are safer, then news says Chicago has most gun laws of any state and most shootings and killings! Hypocrite, obamas home town we should have cash flowing to policing, to fund police pensions, when George Bush was the last real president his hometown of Crawford Texas was flush with cash, flush with police protection, presidents that are competent protect their hometowns to show how proud they are, but guess not this 1!
Why is gary still employed? the gold star club? they need to have a shakeup and immediately because innocents are getting shoot and murdered everyday in chiraq! If this was a company they would of been long gone!
Yup sounds great.
I'm hoping like hell that commander KJ from 005 gets dumped. He can't make a decision long enough to save his own ass.
I heard a LOT of people trying to bid out.
They must be tired of playing ring around the roses with his goofy ass trying to micro manage everyone
