Redmoon Fire Burns Yacht Club

  • About 60 members of the Burnham Park Yacht Club on Northerly Island were sitting down to a surf-and-turf dinner to honor new club members Saturday when embers and ash from the nearby Great Chicago Fire Festival started to fall onto the club, several members told the Tribune.

"All of a sudden, it was like a meteor shower," club commodore-elect Chris Edmonds said. "A number of people got so frightened they thought the building was on fire and started to exit."

Thousands attended the fire festival Saturday night at Northerly Island to watch event host Redmoon Theater light a house on fire to celebrate the city's resolve following the Chicago Fire of 1871. Edmonds said thick smoke filtered into the club and ash fell onto some boats in Burnham Harbor from the spectacle.

Redmoon representatives said in a statement provided to the Tribune, "Our first priority was always the safety of our festival attendees, staff, artists, performers and the surrounding area. We worked directly with the Chicago Fire Department to ensure we exceeded all safety requirements associated with the burning of the GRIT House and we regret any inconvenience that may have occurred at the Yacht Club or their members."

A Redmoon spokeswoman said anyone affected by the fire should contact Westrec Marinas, which manages Chicago harbors and will coordinate with Redmoon.
Uncontrolled conflagrations are a bad thing.

Uncontrolled conflagrations approved by Rahm Emanuel, licensed by the ciity and torching $100,000 worth of taxpayer money must be good things.

"...boaters at Burnham Harbor found themselves bombarded by ashes and embers carried by the wind.

“It was like a meteorite shower,” Chris Edmonds, vice admiral of the Burnham Park Yacht Club, said Monday. “Red sparks were coming down like a snowstorm.”

"Embers burned holes through the private club’s new vinyl canopy that covers its outdoor patio, causing an estimated $6,000 damage.

"The club was hosting an event Saturday night for new members, some of whom were dining outside when the chaos began, Edmonds said.

“People were out there with their kids,” he said.

"Embers also fell on boats, Edmonds said. One burned a hole through a sail that was lying on a boat’s deck. Canvas covers of other boats were also damaged.

"An ember landed on canvas covering Paulette Horne’s dinghy. Onlookers, thankfully, were able to put it out, she said.

“Whoever organized this obviously doesn’t know anything about boating or wind conditions,” Edmonds said. When firefighters arrived to check the roof of the yacht club for damage “they were absolutely livid,” Edmonds said."

This stupid thing has been a joke for the second year in a row. No more public money for this group of fucktards. It was a fire that killed around 300 people and left thousands upon thousands homeless, not to mention the destruction to all the structures. It shouldn't be celebrated.

OK, the Trib covered this potential hazard - what about our fearless TV "investigative reporters?"
Hey BGA and Andy Shaw: What if some of the embers had hit a sail boat?

The stupidity of this "event", the waste of taxpayer $$$, and the danger that the redmoon clowns pose to public safety should be enough reason for Emperor Rahmulus to stop this two year "tradition." As any fire dept. will tell you during Fire Prevention Month - Don't Play With Fire! We don't need this circus as part of the "Bread & Circus" strategy of past & present emperors.

Next fiasco - Hyatt Hotel and NBC's "Falling Star" on New Year's Eve!!

What does Redmoon Theater have on Rahm?? Why would he approve a stupid 'Pet' trick at the cost to Taxpayers of $100,00.00 from the City and $75,000.00 from the Park District. Thousands of dollars spent to set fires to fake buildings in a City that is dead broke, commemorating the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 in which hundreds of real buildings burned to the ground and over 300 folks lost their precious lives. Is Rahm stupid? Is he nuts? And just after being informed the City's financial status was the same as junk. And what about Copycats/Pyromaniacs...what if dudes begin to set fires to boats and buildings. Contact your Aldermen and the Mayor. This stupid, stupid nuttiness must be stopped. Rahm has no right to spend Taxpayers on this BS...heck, he could have hired 2 Police Officers for one year for the price of setting cardboard boxes on fire for 15 minutes.

Rahm and company got lucky this time. If a fire had started at the yacht club, or people suffered from smoke inhalation, or a stampede started during that dinner, the City would be on the hook big time for any unfortunate tragedy that occurs because of this wacko "celebration of the city's resolve". Wanton disregard for other people's safety, rights and property in the name of political vanity and narcissism is criminal. Too bad the embers didn't blow in a different direction.

Maybe in the future we can capsize a boat full of period-dressed mannequins to reenact the Eastland disaster. You know, to show the City's resolve. Weirdo bizarro life hating humanity despising freak show liberals. What kind of a man comes from a family where another of their illustrious scions spouts nonsense about if you live past age 75 you've lived long enough and shouldn't get real health care anymore but just be left to die? Rahm's doctor brother should start that program with his own family first. And what kind of city would vote such a death-worshipper in as Mayor? All while he spouts soundbites about "the kids".

"What if some of the embers had hit a sail boat?"

They did. Several vessels with damage, not to mention the club facilities, which "filled with heavy smoke." Read above Sun-Times clip.

"Chris Moskos said his boat, named Sogno del Pirata, was sprinkled with ash from the fire.

“My boat was a mess,” he said. “But ash from the fire was on a whole bunch of boats in the area.”

Time to put an end to this. A simple, quiet memorial service at the Water Tower would be far more appropriate -- and no clowns, no bands, no food trucks, and no lead-up of summer-long psychological indoctrination of children to "have flexible personalities" and "be members of many cultures at once."

...and no Redloons in cow suits, playing with matches.

Rahm Emanuel's Face Removed From E.T. Mural Along The 606

September 17, 2015 5:51am

"HUMBOLDT PARK — A commissioned mural of Rahm Emanuel depicted as E.T. along The 606 has been wiped clean of all traces of the mayor.

"Alejandro Ayala, the artist of the piece, said he thinks the organizers of the wall received pressure from the city about the E.T. mural.

"The curator of the wall, Flash ABC, said he made the decision to take down the mural last week in order to keep the relationship between graffiti writers and the mayor's administration strong.

"Whoever painted over Emanuel's face also painted over a portion of the mural that depicted a drill digging into the letters "CPS."

https://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150917/humboldt-park/rahm-emanuels-face-removed-from-et-mural-along-606

"Maintain a strong relationship" overall with -- not "artists," but vandals [defined as anyone who sprays up other people's property without permission] while you tell people to call 311 and get the soda-blasters to remove their crap. I got it.

Oh -- they just finished refurbishing the Ferris Wheel on the Pier last year, and now it is coming out for a bigger one.

Agreed. Might as well have a celebration of the flight 191 crash. Build a fake runway, and have a radio-controlled DC 10 bank a hard left and crash. Add some fake screams, and build a model trailer park that gets hit by burning jet fuel. Then hope the spectators go "oooh ahhhh" like on the 4th of July fireworks. On a side note, doesn't the CFD say "Learn Not To Burn"? Any fire inspector will tell you the best way to fight a fire is to prevent it.

Don't know why, but I'm having trouble summoning sympathy for the yacht club members. A $6000 awning and $4800 sail (both of which may be covered by insurance) would represent a good part of some family's yearly income (a family who can now afford health insurance). A dinner disturbed by ash - surf and turf ruined. Oh, the terrible things exacted on the wealthy. Perhaps I can feel the commodore (commodore? - really?)and friends' pain - on second thought, no.

kgraham680

@Thinkaboutit9
My opinion has nothing to do with money but people of position not understanding how their woes pale in comparison with people struggling to just survive. And for your information, I may have more money than they do. Just can't get my knickers in a twist over their ruined surf and turf

The city would rather burn money than put it to any good use or anything that will benefit cops and firefighters who are a political punching bag but not a political power.

Rahm raises taxes and fees but will not cut spending. Not for this foolishness and not for any product the city buys.

Not nearly enough was done with that "Gallon of Bleach Story". Imagine all the small products that the city buys from paper clips to vehicles, printing paper to pencils that have to come from so called "preferred vendors" or "minority contractors". If the same holds true for those products then there is the graft that is costing us our pensions, the manpower our safety and all that implies.

I'd like to get the exact product that the "Gallon of Bleach Story" referred to. Some are more expensive than other but let's take say it was an ordinary gallon of commercial product we all are familiar with that we all can buy from any store. I'd like to call the laundry room of Trump Tower and as is they use that and how much they pay for it. I'm sure a lot less than $17.64 a gallon which means that Donald Trump is a whole lot smarter than Rahm Emanuel not to say more honest.

Graft payments in the form of campaign contributions to politicians not withstanding does a "preferred vendor" or "minority contractor" have to exorbitantly overcharge to make a profit. And when does a "preferred vendor" or "minority contractor" have to play the same game as everyone else. The program was meant to be an aid to help startup businesses in those communities but it have been perverted. Once a company is up and running and can make a profit then they have to bid like everyone else. What happen then would probably the real owner M/2 running would get rid of the minority front and start a new company. The graft would just keep on coming.

Since this is costing us our pensions and endangering ours and the public safety why isn't the BGA, the Feds or Inspector General Office doing anything about this.

(Sarcasm ON) Now what IF... Deano and the FOP assembled a team of retired detectives and accountant who went over all the city's purchases and found out how that money was being spent and wasted. Were there stockpiles of materials in warehouses? Were we spending four or five times over the market value for ordinary items? Were so called "preferred vendors" or "minority contractor" just fronts. Assemble the information and crunch the numbers and could cut costs just by mega-millions just by being honest and frugal.

Take all that, make some cool graphics, a book as thick as the Warren Report and go present it to Rahm at a press conference. Rahm would say, "Thank-you very much." and leave the room. News camera talking heads would talk about how the mayor says crime is down.

The only thing that would really change is that Deano wouldn't get that six-figure second pension job. (Sarcasm OFF)

Stay Safe. Register and Vote, elections have consequences.

Prop it up on Rahm's porch holding a bag of tomatoes,
then ring the bell and run...

Have a little digital laugh-y thing hidden on it...

I really don't know what happened, I've been in the Trib Moderator's sights for making fun of Tiny Dancer and McClueless. Oh well. :-)

ps: and not one troll replied to my blatantly obnoxious post.

Can we get some of the unclaimed bodies from the morgue, set them afire and have an Auschwitz festival ? What the heck is the city thinking ?

The risk to public safety and private property are obvious and I won't pile on - others here have said it better than me.But Redmoon has permanently damaged their reputation with these two expensive fiascoes and that's a shame.Chicago is a first-class theater town and Redmoon was one of its best.A city needs more than financial and business assets to set themselves apart.Culture counts too.But now the city will be stingier than ever to fund public arts projects, especially theatrical ones. Can you blame them? THANKS REDMOON !

Chicago is definitely a first-class theater town, but Redmoon contributed very little to that reputation.

7:31, that's amazing that it made it! My comments are always deleted and the ones that survive are ripped apart by crybabies and trolls. I argue back for a while but then just stop replying after giving them a send off. Kudos!

It was not even historically accurate for the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire. That conflagration started on Sunday October 8 and continued to early Tuesday, October 10, 1871. The fire killed up to 300 people, destroyed roughly 3.3 square miles of the city and left more than 100,000 residents homeless. The Chicago Historical Museum has some very interesting exhibits on the fire and what happened after.

The Great Fire cause a lot of things to change like Chicago having alleys as fire breaks and wooden roof shingles became outlawed. Also prohibited was a common type of quick and cheap structure known as "balloon construction" which used 2x4 as tall as the building but left vertical gaps in the walls where the fire could spread quickly.

Anyone remember Peshtigo Court?

this entire thing is like the punch line to a joke about our stupid mayor. I don't care how much he says the fire dept. helped plan this. Firefighters don't like fires. Any fires.

The wild fire in Pesthigo Wisconsin which occurred at the same time as the Great Chicago Fire killed over 1,000 people and wiped out whole families.

It is hardly remembered anywhere outside that area end few in Chicago know why Pesthigo Court here got its name.

If Rahm does this fiasco nest year I can assure you of one thing. It will cost us much more and he will cry WE'RE BROKE! when it comes to our needs.
