There are still some idiot bosses pushing for numbers, despite the ACLU, the previous DOJ, and a hostile States Attorney looking to jail coppers. But there are still some coppers who know exactly how to deal with that:

Her head almost exploded yesterday when an old timer basically called her out writing in his to from that he'll comply with her quota when she gives it to him in writing. Priceless. Was wondering when someone was gonna shut her dumb ass up. I'd love to see a copy because I heard it's pretty funny. She was pissed!! Well played officer. Can't believe there are supervisors still demanding activity. I guess when you have no skin in the game it's easy to play in the gray areas.

I heard same thing about a female Sgt in 009 that doesn't like check off when you don't fill in the boxes in checkoff sheets. Especially when your assigned some mission. Anyone here the same? Why is there even checkoff sheets still? I'm sure all this nonsense goes on in other districts? Does it go on in saturation units?

I don't understand why it's a bad thing to ask your PO's to get some kind of self-initiated activity while working as a police officer. You are getting a pretty good paycheck and I don't think it's asking a whole lot to do a quality job. I've worked for other departments (smaller) and if you aren't producing, you get fired. If you do your job the right way (ie: follow the law, document properly) you have very little to worry about.

as a retired lieutenant, I can sympathize with both parties in this matter. It is well within the authority, in fact obligation, for your supervisor to ask what your activity is each day you work. After all, this is still a job. And, I am sure that lieutenant is getting pressure from her boss. Now, on the other hand, it is well within reason for the officer to ask for that order to be in writing. If the lieutenant will not do that, well, then that lieutenant is a coward or is asking something that lack legal or ethical authority. I had a commander order me to leave certain businesses alone from ordinance enforcement or he would file a complaint against me. I asked for the order in writing, which of course, he refused. I then proceeded to enforce the law against these businesses. That commander did nothing because for one he was a coward and for two it was an improper order. Now , onto the big question. Everything that you do in today's law enforcement climate will be closely watched and dissected. Be careful what you do. If you did not see anything during your tour that would require enforcement action, then you did not and so state. There is nothing the department can do about it. As you can see and read, the progressives want to take from you all contract protections to include the grievance process. It will be a fight that you must prevail in.

Any Sgt. who goes along with with this Lt. nonsense should be ashamed of themselves, in fact as a Sgt I would advise this Officer to start documenting any type of backlash he may incur because he asked this Lt. to put her requirements on paper, I would advise him to gather any witnesses he may have as well. This is a time where all officers citywide need to stick together to weather the current black cloud over our department

When I was in 009 a Sgt that is now in narcoticts with Clout. Had PPOs spar, suspended, even went as far to call up his buddies about how they don't respect him. Sgt. GERM. Hint. Funny thing is that PO could have sued the department for all the shit they put them through. If those guys are any smart it's not too late to sue him and the department. He left the watch because acording to him no one respected him.

I have a little story about some of my former supervisors in a North side district years ago. I was working with a very nice South side male partner. Apparently the bosses on 3rd watch didn't like him very much because he wasn't one of the chosen few kiss asses on the watch. I was pulled aside at least 5 or 6 times by supervisors and was strongly "Advised" to find a new partner. The pickings were pretty slim and I wasn't about to be told who I can and cannot work with. I decided to ignore the requests of the 3rd watch bosses. The bosses suddenly treated me completely different and turned on me. The lovely former Captain (who later was involved in a horrific car crash off duty), really tried to jam me up. I tried to keep my nose clean to the best of my abilities. They tried to jam me for some ridiculous court deviation that per general order was not valid. I proceeded to print out and highlight the appropriate general order and presented it to the former lovely female Asian Commander (whack job). Said Commander was completely smug and arrogant, thinking they had me jammed. I proceeded to break out my printed general order with highlighted specifics proving that I was not in any way violating any general orders. The Commander almost gagged on her words and was literally almost shaking she was so pissed off! I hit the streets shortly thereafter and was greeted to a heroes welcome of applause by my fellow P.O.'s for standing up to the douche bag Captain and crazy Commander. I knew that I had defeated the evil brain trust, but also knew that heavy retaliation was to follow. First chance I had, I bid the F out! I thought a brick would follow me, but luckily it didn't. Please stand up to these spineless, elitist, arrogant, power hungry bosses! You'll sleep better at night knowing that they don't own your dignity. Stay fetal!

Officer, awesome job with the TO/From. Keep up the good work. Always remember, a white shirt LT is a political hack. Some have a conscious and look out for the blue shirt, but most are just part of the corrupt machine. Handle accordingly.
White shirts always stick together and always break rules or the contract to screw over a police officer. They don't care about consequences because they think they're insulated.
They also don't care about legal consequences and litigation that police officers have to face from doing the job on a daily basis because they sit in their offices totally separate from contact with the public. They got themselves promoted so they could be in a position where they can tell you to stick your neck out or else, and they get to watch and talk about you and laugh about you or talk about how stupid and lazy blue shirts are.
If you're out busy running around trying to get their numbers like a fool, and just one stop goes south and you get the jackpot, is that Lieutenant going to even buy a ticket to your benefit? Is that lieutenant going to pay the bills for your family while you're on a no pay status waiting on a federal case?
It's getting to the point I cannot even stand the sight of a white shirt. Knowing that most of them got their position illegally and dishonestly, and that they disingenuously do everything they can to thrust police officers into more exposure to litigation. They have to be aware of what is going on here in Chicago and Crook County. As far as I know, the war on police has not been suspended.
Should we not all, supervisors and officers, close ranks to make sure we get through this anti-police climate without incident and make it to our pension? Of course the supervisors don't care, they are insulated from consequences. It's all about the next bump up for them, and how they can make themselves look good by grinding down on you, the dumb don't know anybody blue shirt on a watch pushing a beat car.
I should be fired? I should be given Sergeant of the Year Award for protecting my officers. Go fuck your self and your reasonable years ago. So blow me, like you did to make Lt, Captain, or Exempt. Asshat!!

1) Document word for word on any requests for activity (ISR, parkers, movers etc.)
2) Record the Date and Time
3) Name and Star Number of the PIMP

There were even chickenshit activity hounds bringing their district activity holdovers contacts to hand in at CHA checkoff so they could work it the next week in a more favorable post.
I expect there will now be precise roll call times, uniform inspections, periodic location checks, and guaranteed on the hour checkoff.
The old timers don't have to take bs from unhinged merit bosses and young bucks,

If it's who I think it is, he is the last one any supervisor with anything to lose should even think about retaliating against. Knows the orders inside and out, front to back and has a history of very detailed documentation with several issues. One of the hardest working officers I knew on the job. Was never one to initiate rocking the boat, but didn't take shit either when he felt he was wronged or slighted, just wanted to be left alone. And if it's who I think it is, it seems he went a little easy on the good Lieutenant in his wording, I have always known him to be a little more crass when putting pen to paper in instances like this. Anyway, good for whoever dropped that to from, it's a whole different police department these days and some of these people who are supposed to be supervising you have no fucking clue.

Retired now and while as a P.O. or a Detective any unreasonable order by a boss(s) was always met with, can I have that request in writing. Almost every time a request was made to have something in writing or to put it in the C.O. book, the stupid idea would just vanish from conversation. Bosses know without question, someone asking them to put a request on paper puts them under the microscope of the department. And anything that goes wrong with that order comes right back on their asses. On one of the above comments, this PO better watch himself after requesting the Lt. to put her order on paper, and some how this is going to cause the LT. and other bosses to pick on him. That's bullshit, bosses that read the to-from-suject report know the P.O. is right, presently the Police Department is under the gun with DOJ, ACLU, and countless others. This officer is demonstrating common sense, if he complies to the Lt.'s order and gets caught up in a violation of some minorities rights or racial profiling; then something in writing can ease the pain by demonstrating he was ordered by putting it on paper, then its written in stone and the Lt. has to answer why she gave the order in the first place, which could point out another boss and his/her agenda.

I don't know TW on a personal level but thank you for what you do. I'll be the first to say that i couldn't do what you do because I have children but it makes me feel better knowing that there are officers like you preventing drunks from hurting and killing innocent people. That's always been the problem in slow districts like 018. Stupervisors have too much time on their hands and come up up with stupid things like activity sheets. 016 has them now. 025 handled it the right way back when I worked there.
025 mutants would write down 'zeroes,' with smiley faces in them, along with pentagrams and shamrocks. When they were told to knock it off they would put down ridiculous numbers like 50 arrests or 100 movers. Again, the Sgt said they would get in trouble for falsifying police activity. Oddly enough, that didn't seem to deter them since even those idiots knew that quotas are illegal. After some P.O. wrote 'fuck off,' on the sheets, management gave up and got rid of the check off sheet.

Paula, aka 'Pap Smear', is one of the weakest supervisors ever to be created by the fraudulent CPD promotional combine. Some of the P.O.'s on the 2nd watch aren't sure if she even possesses a driver's license, because she rarely, if ever, ventures out onto the mean 2nd watch streets of the rock'in 018th District. If Paula was given a district beat map, and asked to find the intersection of Poe and Maud streets in a squad car, it would likely take her most of her tour to successfully complete the task. Isn't it a large part of a WOL's prescribed duties to supervise from the field? But then again why would she, or need to? She has an assigned DSS, or a desk PO suck-hole, perform 90% of her work load. This gives Paula the free time to play on the computer to GPS the locations of P.O.'s and call them out from the comfort of her desk's chair, or, snoop around looking at a P.O.'s medical history without just cause. Paula has quite the department track history as an underwhelming underachiever (open EEOC beefs, federal lawsuits, hostile work place environment CR's, etc.). This makes her perfect for the next round of promo's to Captain's rank, or, hold our collective breaths, suitable candidate for an exempt member! Sadly, the bitter and rotten fruit that's come to harvest, was planted with seeds sown years ago by the frauds Townsend, Martin, Rodriguez, Hillard, Cline, Maurer, jody and mcDrunk, and far too many more to mention. This department is tracking perfectly toward an epic failure. When, or exactly where it occurs remains to be seen. Maybe it will occur on a day, and at a time when the likes of a Paula is in charge. Heaven help us! But then again, she could always defer to one of the two 018th district 2nd watch sgt.'s, HeeHaw Bob and Dan McDonald to make a decision. The only problem with that is you got to catch one of them when their actually working. Bob and Dan have an addendum in their CBA that allows them to work short hours, <40 per week. Even shorter than their...ah, I'll keep it clean and not go there. Together they share the tandem nickname 'come late, leave early'. Producing activity isn't a condition of employment for CHA to get it. It is not a condition or a penalty to not produce while at CHA north. Writing a To-From has no baring on future eligablity for CHA so this post is a misnomer .

as a retired lieutenant, I can sympathize with both parties in this matter. It is well within the authority, in fact obligation, for your supervisor to ask what your activity is each day you work. After all, this is still a job. And, I am sure that lieutenant is getting pressure from her boss. Now, on the other hand, it is well within reason for the officer to ask for that order to be in writing. If the lieutenant will not do that, well, then that lieutenant is a coward or is asking something that lack legal or ethical authority. I had a commander order me to leave certain businesses alone from ordinance enforcement or he would file a complaint against me. I asked for the order in writing, which of course, he refused. I then proceeded to enforce the law against these businesses. That commander did nothing because for one he was a coward and for two it was an improper order. Now , onto the big question. Everything that you do in today's law enforcement climate will be closely watched and dissected. Be careful what you do. If you did not see anything during your tour that would require enforcement action, then you did not and so state. There is nothing the department can do about it. As you can see and read, the progressives want to take from you all contract protections to include the grievance process. It will be a fight that you must prevail in.

Had a LT. come up to me before my shift and say: "There's been a lot of gang shootings in this area (he gave me the parameters), mostly from vehicles, if you guys see any traffic violations over there, I'd appreciate a couple of blue cards or movers, your choice; maybe we can get one of these shooters vehicles identified. Thanks, and let me know if you need anything." That was the best way to handle it, and I had no problem issuing a blue card in that specific area. That being said, we were not ORDERED to do any activity, and were not presented with any consequences if we failed to do so. We are still the police, and we can still use traffic violations as a lawful tool. Kudos to this guy for shoving it up that LT's pompous ass. Stay safe brothers and sisters.

You are getting a pretty good paycheck and I don't think it's asking a whole lot to do a quality job. I've worked for other departments (smaller) and if you aren't producing, you get fired. If you do your job the right way (ie: follow the law, document properly) you have very little to worry about.
The problem super cop is that when doing proactive police work shit can go sideways very quick. Turn your attention to last summer and the 3900 block of Grenshaw. 10th district tactical officers chase a young lad across Roosevelt Rd northbound onto arguably one of the worst blocks in the city. The 'block' comes out as the one officer is being chocked by the assailant. The local population is threatening death to the officers as the partner gives the assailant one kick to the head. The officer is stripped before the engine of his squad car is cold. That officer followed the law, acted within state law to preserve his partners life. He was still stripped. It's all about perception, the perception of the video and the knee jerk reaction of a spineless upper echelon, I will not call them leaders or leadership because they do not lead they pander.

Worked with TW in 019 who also played for Bo Shembeckler at UofM. Ask the Coppers that worked out of Bel/West what they think of him. Dealing with all the crap that comes in the land of fruits and nutz is enough, but when it's time to go home and your assigned a 501 Timmy would take it on those days and any other with out any questions asked. TW looks like he could be employed by Vince McMahon, but was a gentle giant. Smart as a whip as well. Another guy on Our watch summed it up to me "Thank God for Timmy W." He wasn't a pussy or rat, worked all night, and court all day. If I'm not mistaken he even took February furloughs to golf in the Southern Part of The Country. He kept to himself and didn't fuck with people. More power to TW if he works his left one off. TW didn't negotiate how he should be paid.

Worked with TW in 019 who also played for Bo Shembeckler at UofM. Ask the Coppers that worked out of Bel/West what they think of him. Dealing with all the crap that comes in the land of fruits and nutz is enough, but when it's time to go home and your assigned a 501 Timmy would take it on those days and any other with out any questions asked. TW looks like he could be employed by Vince McMahon, but was a gentle giant. Smart as a whip as well. Another guy on Our watch summed it up to me "Thank God for Timmy W." He wasn't a pussy or rat, worked all night, and court all day. If I'm not mistaken he even took February furloughs to golf in the Southern Part of The Country. He kept to himself and didn't fuck with people. More power to TW if he works his left one off. TW didn't negotiate how he should be paid.

I've also worked with T-Dub in 019. He'd be the first guy there if you called for help, and he'd take your 501 if you were getting towards the end of your tour. He knows everything there is to know about those, and he'll share his wisdom if you asked. I hope he beats them for $200k next year...and when he does pull the plug and moves off into retirement, he will have the means to do whatever he wants. don't know TW on a personal level but thank you for what you do. When she was a Sgt in 024, she would drive around looking for shit jobs to get the P.O.'s involved in. When she found something, she would send a car a message via the PDT, not on the air, and then sit back and time how long that car took to arrive. If you took too long, first offense would be a talking too which was usually in front of everyone at check off. After that, you would have to drop paper.

I understand that's what he does but on this job you shouldn't think you can cry about stuff like a big baby just because it's your thing. No one owes you anything. Just shows how misinformed you really are. You can't file a grievance over a hostile work environment. Grievances are filed over violations of contract. Hostile workplace is an EEOC beef after and only after it is brought to the attention of a supervisor and nothing is done. All that said, asking a copper to work does not create a hostile workplace environment.
As a recruit, in order to stay on the watch(3rd), I was told 10 parkers,1 mover and an arrest per day.
The problem with cha north is its a stationary assignment....the only activity you can get is to snatch someone walking by and unethically contact card them. Cars have been assigned there so long all the citizens vehicles are in compliance you can't even get a parker.

Judging from my interactions in 006 when she was there, LT. Pap Schmeer is a terrible excuse for a leader, one of many in the city. Her uniform was sharp (points awarded) but she didn't know what the fuck was what in the district, couldn't even tell you what streets were what beat if I remember correctly. Her demeaned was that of a little rat that put on a nice shiny costume and got to run around in charge. You could tell she never did real police work, that she was a house mouse with a golden ticket. She would always say something nonsensical like, make sure you're shoes/boots are 100% leather, no sort of mesh material is allowed. No one ever listened or complied and, to my knowledge, she didn't write anyone up for it.
All in all, 100% clown. Good on this copper.

I hear you about the "productivity" demand comparison with other 9-5 jobs, and you have a point that the one you were talking to should honestly admit. Obviously, well not so obviously to ignorant fools, policing isn't supposed to be about bringing home the bacon, marketing to bring in the profits, you know...producing revenues streams. It is supposed to be about protecting and defending the Rule of Law, the Constitutions themselves, both the rights of the people AND the powers and limitations of government.
Without a doubt, it is unjust to compare policing to corporate cubical 9-5 work. At the same time, lets be honest too, right? A lot of other folks out there work three shifts too, in professions where bottom line profit numbers aren't the measure of success. Third Shift Christmas Eve Nursing home staff come to mind. My point is that LOTS of folks have seemingly thankless jobs...but know this please, plenty of us are very thankful even as we attempt to get you guys and gals back on track by offering constructive criticisms.
Quite frankly, in a perfect world, we would see our cops doing so very little each shift! And I do mean even when doing something it be something like giving someone a ride home who had a bit too much to drink or even that funny meme of getting a cat out of a tree! Why? Because that would mean society has become Great Again, returning to self governance where we each mind ourselves and our own business, rather than offending other people's business. Maybe if cops led by example...disassociating from the revenue stream leanings of the corrupt politicians, instead arresting those who are corrupt to their core would be helpful. You know, instead of the "productivity" that person thinks is such a good idea.......

Always when confronted by stupidity like this, request the request to be put in writing or you will not comply. It's easy, tell the sup. you will follow the order, but you need it explained in writing to demonstrate to everyone you were following the order to the letter. This way it's official, thereby, the sup can also explain his/her actions. Bosses just shit all over themselves when you ask them to put their stupid ideas on paper. All kidding aside this is the truth. The only score that matters is that no one was shot while the police were deployed there. There are many nights when there is nothing to turn in at the end of the tour but the officers were on post and alert.

That sounds random to me, which brings me to what happened to me. I got in a pissing contest with a Lt. from a violent crimes unit and four days before I retired a Random Drug Test. The Sgt. at Random Drug Testing was a friend of mine and I ask him if this test was random. He checked and told me no it wasn't but was unable to tell if it was from the Sgt. or the Lt. When I returned to the unit, I asked the Sgt. and he told me the Lt. ordered him to request the test. This Lt. would always duck most of the day on Tuesdays and Friday. Learned he was working his part-time job on does days. I got all of the info on his part time job and did a T0/From and submitted it to the Sup., First Dep, Area Chif, IAD, and the Mayors Office of Inspector General and signed the To/From. He got only ten days, I was hoping the prick would get fired like you or me, but he had some juice that saved him.
Let's break down this Officer's three-sentence report. In the first sentence, he states, the Supervisor wants to know why he is checking off showing he has no activity. He never answers this question in his report. In the second sentence, he states he is unaware that activity is required of him. He is just inferring that is what the supervisor means. In the third sentence, he again wrongly believes there are activity mandates. He goes on to demand to know what the supervisor defines as an activity, and it better be in writing. Officer the check off sheet is a list of common activity that you may engage in during your tour of duty. It is in writing, and no one has to define them to you.
The supervisor was just doing what a supervisor is supposed to do, and that was supervising check off. The above matter is over, move on nothing to see here.
What troubles me is all the comments about quotas, ACLU, DOJ, retaliation, lawsuits and name calling makes me think the stress is getting quite high out there. It is crazy all the people who saw something that just is not there.

btw, no one has to give you an order in writing, whoever told you that is a fool too and the one claiming to be a retired Lt is full of it too. You are required to follow all lawful orders written or "verbal" and nothing in the rules, directives or contract offer you the option of requesting an order in writing. If you don't want to follow a verbal order then be prepared to defend your decision on the CR number. I'll give you this hint, trying to use "they wouldn't give it to me in writing" wont work for you so plan your 5 day suspension wisely, maybe use it to work on acquiring some common sense.
Try this one day,
You: Hey Sarge, can i leave about 20 minutes early today, I gotta pick my kid up...
Sarge: Only if you submit it in writing....
