Zzzzzzzz
Yes, we saw the picture. Dozens of you sent it to us.
Yes, we saw the media coverage.
Yes, when we were on midnights, we caught a few winks. Most cops have. Midnights is not a natural state of being and the human body reacts poorly at times. But someone has to mind the radio and keep an eye on things.
It's done. Excuses aside, discipline will be administered, especially if no one has clout. Move along.

We’ve all been there, but like you said.....at least 1 of you had to be a guard officer.
Overwatch is common sense, or so you would think.
BFD worked midnights for 3 years. The worst 3 years of my life. It's beyond comprehension if you have never worked it. Try managing a family with young children while your doing it too. Congrats to anyone who continues to work that shift by choice. You are a special individual.
Stay fetal, not comatosed
Good luck office👮🏾👮🏽♀️ 🛏
They were praying. Leave them alone.
We agree SCC...
Hell... Most Policemen are ruined for life
because they've worked midnights for 10, 15
or even 20 years or more before they can even get a
whiff of "normal" hours like the rest of the world.
Humans aren't made to "stay up."
Yes... You can train yourself to be alert
but there are times that no matter what you
do, your body shuts down and sleeps.
That's why a good partner is critical.
Or you're able to enter an "alert rest"
kind of state...
Being able to pinpoint the location/direction
of gunfire and how many/what caliber of gun(s)
used and be able to respond on-scene before the
job hits the board.
Did that one a lot.
So did many others during that time.
One of the Officers should
have had at least one eye open.
Enemies/Haters are everywhere now.
He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone.
That’s what happens when one works days off. My guess is the both purposely nodded off; but gosh darn it, do it where no one inthe public can see you.
It seems the photo was snapped by the JAG, Ja'mal A. Green or, at least, he is taking credit for it. Fucking jagoff! He immediately uses the photo to fit his agenda and at the same time he sticks it to the two blue shirts. He never once wondered if they could be hurt, injured or sick. Nope. He just snapped the photo and used it for his purposes. Fuck you JAG!
Yeah, well... I never missed my call sign. Strange how that works.
Well, I know that isn't a 025 dist wagon crew, because 025 hasn't had a wagon since last Christmas!
Thanks for making sure your officers have the equipment they need, Tony.
It was an interesting phenomenon, how one could sleep, yet still hear a 10-1 or your beat number when it was put on the air.
It happens. Anyone crucifying those two are just living in a glass house and playing with stones. We’ve all done it at some point. Like it’s been said, one should have been up given the current state of things but it’s over and done with.
Some just don't get it. To sleep implies that you trust these Mofos.
Good way to wakeup dead. A few days off should give you and your partner time to catch up on your sleep. Asleep at the wheel can get you shot.
If you have never done the job or worked the shift, you have no way of knowing the terrible toll working midnights takes on a body and a soul. I empathize with the officers in the photo. But for the grace of God, go I
I feel for them getting it splattered all over the news. Worked for the City myself, those double shifts or working midnights can be brutal.
It’s rerun and weezee
It was an interesting phenomenon, how one could sleep, yet still hear a 10-1 or your beat number when it was put on the air.

Soooooo true! I can still hear fights brewing or alarm in others--it's just the pitch of voices or something.
025 don’t need a wagon when they have a van.
Those vans can maneuver better on narrow side streets than a full size wagon.
They are just doing what the public wants them to do.
2 tact guys from 008 stripped
They need to find a better "hole"
Sometimes you get caught most of the time you don't.
Looking back, since I never had any clout, the midnight wagon was the best job I ever had.
Who says they were sleeping? Did they miss a call?
Prove that they were sleeping and not praying. Five days seems excessive. How about a reprimand and 5 parkers each next work day. Hot steamy summer night and sitting inside an air conditioned truck makes the magic happen. We have all been there.
08/22/2018 03:06:00 AM
Very true!
Hardly worth the ink
24 years on 1st watch. It happens. Now move along
Worked first watch by choice for more than half of my career, thirteen years as a sgt. I couldn’t tell you how many times I nodded off while sitting at a red light, in gear, foot on the brake. Shit happens, especially when you’re an old fart. Those two in the pic don’t look like kids. It’s a bad optic but they could have both nodded off for a short time. No way to tell. Most of us have been there.
Another distraction to keep the heat off of City Hall.
Give them a day and move on.
Another tool to sway public opinion against the PO on the street.
It's contract time, ya know.
If you do fall asleep make sure your partner has clout, otherwise you will be punished.
Back in the day th camera had caught lots of people in the midst of a blink giving the appearance of sleeping. Move along.
We all know the PO from 008 took time and these two will take time. Anyone know if Sgt VA took time?
As a recruit in the Academy in 1986, the Commander, whose name escapes me, told the Class "when working 1st watch and you are nodding off at the wheel, don't be foolish, pull over and take a nap before you crash the car!
this happens, either through fatigue from court and then midnight work or in some cases just some slackers. But, both of you dosing off is a very dangerous thing to do, not just in Chicago, but in most cities. Someone walked right up on you and took your photo. The wrong person walking up on you could have done worse. I am retired, but I recall the days when we changed shifts every 28 days. I liked it. When they went to steady watches I was a sergeant and had no clout so I was put on midnights for the rest of my career. I hated it and often struggled to stay awake, even in a very busy district.
I slept on midnites...I hated those hours! It's unnatural for a body to be awake at that time. You worked when it was busy, and you caught a few winks when it wasn't. We called it "foot patrol". I still had to go home to try and get 4-6 more hours of sleep.
But I always did it where no one would find me. Everybody has their "safe space". If U never worked midnites for any length of time, you have no right to judge...
WTF, with coppers being shot, and looking like sitting ducks, these 2 idiots need to find out the address of the guy that took the photo shake his hand, buy him dinner he may of given you 2 a "wake up call" too save your life! This was a scenario that could of played out the other way,and we would of had 2 funerals to attend! that is not fear that is reality!
From the media:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-sleeping-chicago-police-officers-photo-20180821-story.html
Excerpts:
The department said neither sleeping officer was working overtime and had minimal overtime since July 1.
Worked midnight's for 3 years when new on the job, if my FTO at the beginning was "tired" we parked but I stayed awake, was told by many senior officers "if you go into the hole to rest, always 1 stays ever vigilant, head on swivel!" The quality of officers is dropping, this is another example painting coppers in a negative way! Green is a moron, but him saying coppers are burnt out,and working to much is spot on, the department must stop paying hundreds of millions in extra overtime, and hire whatever the required amounts may be!
Another thing watching coppers working, at a stoplight passenger on social media, driver texting or gabbing on the phone, not paying attention, observed the rare traffic stop on archer ave the other day. 2 coppers, race and sex unimportant, they were young, driver walking up 5 shit heads in car, dark tinted windows blasting rap tunes. The passenger in the squad stood by the door of squad texting not paying attention to the partner, officer safety should be job#1, but that is lost on the new kids on the block, who this is their first job and wanna be the "real police!"
Those officers should be commended for their above and beyond call of FETALISM duty, just be more careful next time and have your eyelids painted like eyeballs...
Its tough but stay busy and get out of the car. Do what you need to do to stay alert. I worked it for 10 years and there were tough nights but I kept myself busy enough to stay awake. No excuses-just do it!
I did most of my best police work in REM, but sadly never recieved any awards or recognition...
It looked to me like these poor souls were over taken by carbon monoxide poisoning. Your district supervisor should take that vehicle out of service before someone gets killed. you know even if it doesn't have a leaking muffler, it could be traveling back to the cab area because of the contour of the exact area it was parked and do to wind and environmental conditions. GET A LAWYER.
Also who gives a shit Fuck them, you closed your eyes to pray you would make it through your shift and go home to your family.
There, but for the Grace of God, go I.
Sometimes we are our own worst enemies though.
They should get exactly what the sleeping #189 Sgt.got while on surveillance.
A long time ago someone said “just think that someone is always watching you”
It takes an asshole communitay organgrinder to politicize this.
Don’t think Jam’Oil didn’t send the first retweet to Geritol Jugghaid, who woke up around 10 a.m. that day.
Gosh, anyone left that misses the rotating shifts?
Many, many reasons for being tired on midnights.
Two, three jobs for one.
Used to a day to be a time when you could get out and walk around to refreshen up.
Too dangerous now....walking or sitting, uniformed or not.
More importantly:
Another reason is the many hidden silent conditions, some brought on by the stresses of this Depts pandering efforts and some genetic, aggravated by the political mismanagement of the Dept.
But please ladies and gentleman on any watch...
Get a medical check up.
FOP sponsored health non invasive screenings 3 or 4 times a year...sign up, show up.
Stay Fetal Safe.
I don't know anyone in any industry who is not sleeping on the jobs during those overnight shifts. Everybody is napping or sleeping. It is humanely impossible not to! Nurses, doctors, lab personnel, night watch, mcdonalds workers. Everybody needs to doze of even for few minutes even the horrible police hater!
They looled like they were pondering the new COPA/SPED directives. Some people learn better when their eyes are closed.
Stay safe and fetal
I fell asleep driving one night on midnights and drove into a tree. I probably should have pulled over and took a nap.
Sleeping? I think not.
Their trying to remember if anything was forgotten in the consent decree.
Goes to show you, don’t believe everything you see in pictures.
They were just deeply praying for all this violence to end...............but on the sad note we had a rat PPO in our district taking video of her FTO's zzz's. Then she bitched to commander in a to-from. The shit that comes out of the academy now. Your worst enemy might be sitting next to you.

Go back to the drawing board and look for another excuse. Since July 1, one officer worked no OT an the other 8 hrs OT in a month and a half. Yea, that’s the reason
Firefighters get paid to sleep............ whats the difference. The revrunds do not want you being proactive.
They were like FF............. they react to crime............... just like FF react to fires.
What ever happened to that sgt. in OCD, i believe that got caught snoozing? Just wondering.

Protest organizers announce route for Kennedy Expressway shutdown

The disruption, he says, will shine a light on the protesters demands: that Mayor Rahm Emanuel resign and that activists play a role in police officer contracts.
*notice how they are not saying anything about mrs fenner resignations like last bullshit March?
remained unclear how many people would join Livingston, though he estimated he needed about 100 people to block all lanes. Still, he said the crowd size shouldn’t mattered and pointed to the size of marches Martin Luther King Jr. had in the Chicago area.
* cannot even get 100 people/folks last March taxpayers paid 300 coppers plus miscellaneous people, this pos rev had max 40 peoples to disrupt lake shore drive but again the 50 rahm Eddie and pandering caved!
Livingston, of West Humboldt Park’s New Hope Baptist Church, said the group plans to meet at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 3 at the Cumberland Avenue entrance ramp before marching about noon on the the Kennedy.
* Woooo Leo to be the man you have to beat the man will you cower again? Scared like?
Illinois State Police has jurisdiction over the Kennedy, and last week the agency said they would work with community leaders try to find alternative routes for a lawful assembly.
“It is against the law for pedestrians to enter the expressway including all on and off ramps,” according to a statement released last week from state police. “Protests on the expressway endanger neighboring communities by backing up traffic onto other arterial routes, creating extremely hazardous conditions for motorists, which are likely to cause crashes resulting in serious injury and fatalities.”
*the point breaking the law and Leo your responsibility is enforcement of the law, will you disappoint the hard working troopers again showing them the “Chicago way?” Or will you finally do your job earning that incredible salary while you collect about $140k CPD pension otw to another 6 figure dip?
Asked what those flying into or out of O’Hare on Labor Day should do, Livingston said the group had no plans to disrupt the CTA Blue Line.
*so this pos decides how you will come and go from airport isn’t this federally illegal urban terrorism?
Some of the best sleep I ever got was overnight working security at a suburban officer complex.
They are extremely lucky the guy who did this pointed a camera and not a gun, that is the hard reality of being stupid like they are without a doubt! They need to take time off. Unpaid maybe a month, then learn if this job is not for them resignation should be immediately submitted. Hope they thank the man that took the pictures for not taking their lives. With all the ambushes of police, they made an easy target, by the grace of God they only got pictures taken and no physical harm, sure their feelings are hurt better that than something violent!
Never slept. How could I, Barb West was already sleeping so I someone had to stay awake.
Seriously? That’s what they got? How bout some guys and gals start taking pix of the Exempts and their On-Duty-Bootie calls. You know, when the exempt car is parked in front of a resident for an hour or so??? Then mysteriously takes off back home to mama and the kids?
Oh fuck off everyone, everybody who works nights has done it.

Ha ha. Thanks for the laugh.
I know both personally and they are good people, just slipped up and got caught up doing something that most of us are guilty of when working midnights (myself included). Move along, nothing to see here.
Worked a lot of security jobs during the 2nd watch. Home for a few hours, then worked CPD. I certainly did snooze after 0300.

It seems that's exactly where the blame should lie. You want to make up ridiculous scenarios and excuses and pass the blame, but the real problem is the two officers in the picture. Napping in the ghetto while wearing a target on your back is a dangerous game.

The main difference is they're sleeping in a relatively secure building, out of the view and reach of those who might wish to do them harm. The other difference is that people aren't as anti-firefighter as they are anti-police. Think about safety and job security instead of excuses.

Retired, but hell yes! They should go back to the rotation that I loved. but hated just as much. Midnights was the 28 day countdown and were brutal, but the watch parties that SCC won't let me tell here, made up for the misery. You also, if lucky enough to go around with your watch, got to know everyone in the district and also all in the D unit. Best times and stories during my first 10 years were all from being on midnights.
PS.
I also think that the draft should be brought back. Mandatory service would cure a lot of our ills today.

Oh pleeeze, have you seen the number of white shirts nodding off during a COMPSTAT meeting ? See lots of heads bobbing up and down and that’s during the day. Was an an exempt meeting with exempt’ s eyes closed throughout the meeting, embarrassing. And that was at 0900 hrs.

8-22 @834pm..I'm in the burbs. I've rotated shifts my whole career and half of that was on 28 day rotations. Not sure what good you see in it. Rotating sucks and has very little purpose or actual benefit besides beating up your body and throwing off your schedule. Rotating is good by limiting the time you work on a shift you hate but likewise it limits the time you could work on a shift you like and have the seniority to work by bid.

Thats a great song...."There, but for the grace of God, there go I"
Old retired dick here -
Shit, I took naps on the 3rd watch working as a dick, 99. I slept better in the old Fords then in my own bed.
I used to hid under 1 55 just south of Cermak and Canal. I fell asleep so deep and it snowed. I woke up and thought I was dead, the interior of the car was pitch black. I always cracked all the windows when sleeping. Had a spot there for years when not raising the clearance rate
Had a old homeless guy that I gave a saw buck a week to, if I was a show or no show. He warded off the creeps that roamed near the river.
If I got bored, shot a few rats roaming with a 22 cal short. Then watched then eat their kin.
No bull shit guys and girls, find a good place to sleep and one has to stay awake, mid nights can be a killer to many.
With several jobs after retirement, I estimate I have spent 25 years on midnight shift alone....... loved it..

As a PPO driving around at 0400 hrs I nodded off and went through some barricades blocking off a street for construction. The senior PO woke up and chewed me out but good. The joys of rotating.
Worked in 003 and 004 in the 80s and early 90s when we still rotated. Everyone knew where the holes were including the Sgts. If someone didn't answer their radio it was common for another car to answer to their Beat number and handle the job while another car went to check if they were ok. Everyone looked out for each other. It was never a good idea for both guys to knock out at the same time but it did happen. Anyone who says that they never caught a nap while working midnights is lying or didn't work the street.

Retired guy here but a P.O. told me this story a few years back. He was in the hole and he sensed someone was watching him. Then he heard an inspector calling his beat number but the radios were canceling out each other He said he thought about what to do because the inspector obviously caught him sleeping and was hoping to redline him. After a few seconds he crossed himself and said “amen”, looked at the inspector and said can I help you. Claims inspector burst out laughing and drove away
Midnights is tough. The worse is the sun hitting your face at 6am + the late job from hell.

Yes. I do expect a citizen to wake up two sleeping police officers. I did and the officers were grateful. I merely explained I was looking out for them. And, I took no photos. In the current instance, the photo taker asswipe was only concerned with getting a "GOTCHA" photo.
Should have seen the old sleeping spot in Railport. 43rd between Damen and Oakley. I used to get the best sleep of my life hiding between those trailers. Until the railroad kid would come roaring into the railyard. Woke us all up

Railport. 43rd between Damen and Oakley
8/23/2018 08:45:00 PM
After quitting the job I could not sleep. I could not figure it out, but then it came to me. I went over there and made a cd of the Railport noises. Once I hit the play button, I am asleep in 60 seconds! But now the wife has to yell "915 and units on citywide" to wake me up!
Sorry, sleeping on the job (especially nowadays) is just stupid. No excuses.
I worked straight 1st watch for 8 years straight, by choice, hated rotating and especially hated afronoons. Could honestly hear my beat or 10-1s when I did rest my eyes and pray. Knew everyones hole, especially Sgts., and answered up for them and then disturbed their prayer. My all time favorite CR# was a goof walking her dogs putting in a complaint of me sleeping, I was legit down on lunch and was really looking down at a book and reading. If the goof took the time to get closer she would have seen the book in my lap with the attached tiny light.

You decided to double down on the stupidity instead of admitting your post was ridiculous? Anyone who saw the picture, or took the picture, knows they were sleeping. Everyone with an ounce of common sense knows they were sleeping. I suspect the person who took the picture watched them sleeping and snoring away for a bit before deciding to take the pic, especially if that person was another P.O., as some have suggested. The insults that offended you were totally warranted. You're being a clueless moron. You actually think they both had heart attacks or passed out from the thin air at altitude in the wagon? You think they were murdered by a ghost who left no signs of violence behind? You think it's in any way likely that they were both simultaneously and equally affected by some unknown illness or injury, rather than the very simple and obvious conclusion that they were just sleeping? As for the poor souls who had to work with me, they seemed to have fun. Now it's just me suffering through an entire tour with myself. I somehow manage to stay awake, while also avoiding the clouds of cyanide gas and murderous ghosts that you believe attacked these officers. Sometimes it's best to admit that the simplest explanation is the correct one, and stop making up ridiculous scenarios. But that's just not you. I'm sure your theories for every job you're assigned are a treat for your partner and your supervisors. Ghosts and poisonous gas and simultaneous heart attacks, oh my!
Ahhhhhhh Railport... My guys in 9 know
You decided to double down on the stupidity instead of admitting your post was ridiculous?
8/24/2018 12:44:00 AM
You wrote a lengthy, insult-riddled, dissertation of blah-blah-blah-wah-wah-wah nonsense filled with lame insults and it backfired. You ultimately evidenced your pomposity, arrogance, childishness, foolishness and ignorance. If anyone around you ever steps in it, just shut your mouth and go away. You are the type that will intentionally get them in deeper trouble. It is no wonder that you work alone. IAD rat comes to mind.
Very dangerous, good way to get shot and killed in an ambush !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, sleeping on the job (especially nowadays) is just stupid. No excuses.
A time honored tradition on the CPD. Tough to stay awake on some of those quiet nights. Especially the first day back. Hard to stay up all day and then work the midnight. I know sleep before you come to work. Unfortunately can’t always be done
