And Once Again....

Even though 100% of the fault lies with the lawbreaker, gotta grab at that brass ring:
  • Two mothers are suing the city of Chicago, contending a “reckless” police chase led to a crash that killed a man, his friend and the friend’s 3-year-old son last month.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Cynthia Turner and Sharnice McGee, whose sons died when a car fleeing police ran a red light and hit their car. It accuses the unnamed officer in the chase of negligence as well as reckless driving and pursuit “in violation of Chicago Police Department general orders and policies.”

The accident happened around 7 p.m. Oct. 1 in the 6900 block of South Loomis Boulevard. Chrishawn Turner, 25, and his friend, Antonio Cowan, 24, had decided to go out that evening to catch up. Turner’s two young children, Cabari Turner, 3, and Shamari Turner, 2, were in the back seat.

Not far away, Chicago police officers in a marked car spotted Christopher Carter speeding erratically east on 69th Street, police said. The officers turned on their lights and sirens and followed, but the department says they turned off the emergency lights and stopped following the car before the crash.
You know what? Even if the officers were parked at their lunch location and were sitting in a restaurant, they'd be accused of negligence for leaving the car where a ne'er-do-well could see it and be subconsciously compelled to accelerate to unsafe speeds, run a red light and launch an unsecured child 100 feet down the street.

It would be damn near impossible to do less in this situation - see a car speeding, turn on the lights, turn off the lights, back off....and you still end up named in a lawsuit. What's the lesson to cops who want to actually stop criminals?

It’s amazes me every single day hearing these coppers out there being proactive and chasing everybody still. It can’t be spelled out any clearer. Police work is dead. You see a car speeding who cares. You see a hand to hand who cares. Gang bangers gathering on a block who cares. You are the enemy now not them

Hell many years ago a relative of mine gets a CR for brutality from OPS. She answered by To-From informing OPS that she had no knowledge of the incident and was regular day off that day. The boss writes a To-From with a copy of the A&As indicating she was day off. That didn't end it, next she gets a subpoena to give a deposition. Now she's deposed and testifed to the same facts. Almost a year later the CR comes back unfounded. And this was way before the affidavits. So did anyone back her up when she said she wanted to go after the mope that filed the false complaint. The SAO was not interested and the bosses said just let it go you're getting paid.

Isn’t that something where you do everything right and are still sued

The lesson to police who still want to stop criminals is to get some video games that play cops and robbers to satisfy your urges. It is much safer, you won't be killed, shot or maimed. You won't be sued and lose you house and savings. And you won't end up in prison.

This is why you look the other way, find a nice hole and hide. You try and do the right thing and all this “family” cares about is getting paid. Let them slaughter each other. I have yet to hear the news say we aren’t doing enough, it’s always too much. Think the city will fight this one? Doubtful.

The city has deep pockets the pockets belong to the taxpayers so they never tire of reaching a little deeper. They will pay!

The news on this was almost comical and one sided.....basically blaming the police for this fatal accident. All three channels never ever once said a word about the asshole DRIVING the car that caused this shit......blame the City for settling out of court to these bottom feeding lawyers. Here's an idea......sue the dude driving the fuckin car.....

The lesson to cops is if your not going to stay FETAL than start putting $ 350.00 away every payday into a defense fund for yourself ,YOUR GOING TO NEED IT !

I had a similar situation sitting at a fixed post at Homan and Walnut. The vehicle is traveling southbound on Homan at a high rate of speed, runs the stop sign at Fulton and flies past me. I pull up to the corner just in time to watch it fly through the red at Lake and just as I’m about to turn my lights on and go after it because that is my first instinct, the sight of the vehicle, which is 2 blocks away from me by this point, crashing just as my lights go on flashes before my eyes. At this point, I inform dispatch of what I just saw, give a description of the vehicle and the direction it is traveling and reverse back in to my spot and continue my security detail. Not worth it at all

If the city fights it and loses, punitive damages can be awarded, the officers having to sell thier house to pay the complainants. Still want the city to fight it?

It’s absolutely ridiculous but we are being forced into becoming the cfd style police. It’s actually what the liberals wanted. So meanwhile, Sit, avoid and wait to be banged in the radio while watching this city burn. It’s completely absurd to go out “looking for activity”. Be safe boys and girls but most importantly be smart!!!

The answer is if you observe a fleeing vehicle speeding west bound, you drive eastbound.

There is no way you guys will win with some people. The "mothers" just want their slice of the pie and I stopped caring who gets a piece and who does not. And most importantly I stopped caring about ghetto drama.

Impulse control people. Doesn’t matter how much you want to chase the criminals it is proven not worth it time after time. It’s amazing how some people can’t get it through their heads. Nothing is judged anymore based on if it was done according to the law and procedure, but on if it satisfies the community and is politically correct.

So, as the police we are not allowed to turn on are lights, even if it's to just signal the speeding driver to slow down? Like, hey jerk I see you? Take it easy. No? Or to turn on the lights to attempt a stop? Guess not. Next the people will be complaining, I kept going because I thought that someone was following me. I didn't know it was the police. They DIDN'T have their LIGHTS ON.

The last traffic stop I ever did was last year. I was looking for VRI activity and a driver we attempted to curb accelerated away from us, through a red light and almost hit several cars and a pedestrian. After that, I was done. VRI has never been essential for our family, so why risk the well being of everyone else on the road for a mover?

Granted, I was full fetal at that point already, but it was a reminder how quickly these tstops can turn to shit. How many of you are still being active for the purposes of VRI? Find several hiding spots away from a main street, with high visibility, that you can alternate through the shift.

When you go to an ice skating rink you will see " skate at your own risk " signs plastered all over the walls. These signs should also be plastered all over the walls at all police facilities. " do police work at your own risk". We don't have your back.

If you don't know how to slow down just observe some other local govt. workers or go to the post office and learn. Do not exceed their speed.

I hope you learned your lesson and are now one of the smart cops and part of the "do nothing" crew.

Until they close the ghetto lottery by tort reform or some other BS term, this nonsense and injustice will continue as long as there is an unscrupulous lawyer willing to file the suit!!!At the same time the city has shown itself to have deep pockets and also rewarding to some of the lawyers (law firms) involved!!!
If you reward bad behavior it multiplies, just look at the city!!!

Is traffic court really necessary?

Could a blogg be started that just shows the results of all these lawsuits/complaints and the money it cost the city/taxpayers? I bet that would turn a few heads.

Totally avoidable.

But then again, what do the "dogass dinosaurs" know?

I'll tell you what I know:

I know proactive policing died a long, long time ago.

I know it's much harder to get in trouble for doing nothing.

I know I sleep very good at night (not to mention during the occasional daytime nap).

I know it was a good idea to keep my mouth shut and listen to the oldtimers 3 decades ago.

Unless it directly involves you, your partner, a close friend or a beloved family member... STAY OUT OF GHETTO AFFAIRS.

Let me echo the following sentiment for the umpteenth-millionth time:

Take your sweet-assed time responding to jobs that aren't an assist or 10-1. Cut the appropriate report and make the required notifications. Arrest on signed complains only. Lather. Rinse. Look. Point & Laugh. Leave. Repeat for 29 & A Day.

It was a Sgt that started the chase. Crash caught on Pod. Sgt doesn’t show for well over a minute. Dude runs away after the crash with plenty of witnesses who just so happened to be looking somewhere else at the moment shithead get out and run passed them. Just a shame that just thinking about stopping crime gets u hauled in federal court. Corporation counsel will tell u it’s in ur best interest to settle the case and then the media twists it and reports that another payout due to “police misconduct”. We can’t win for trying!!!! How is a person supposed to hold their head up and continue doing their job without resentment or disillusionment toward everything or everyone?

How else you get to wear cool backwards baseball caps, skinny jeans, have tattoos, and the punisher decals all over that lifted wrangle that is never off road? Then you go to the bars and tell the young girls how you wear Star Wars pajamas to bed,and you went to Kolledge and your so smart!

A little off topic but why are ambulance drivers racing like they are in the Indy 500? Yes, I realize sometimes it is a life or death situation but I suspect some of the time these youngsters just want the "rush' of the lights and sirens.

Please SCC, hear me on this point.

There was no ACCIDENT here. There was a malicious chosen totally avoidable CRASH.

The word Accident implies no fault, unavoidable, happenstance, dumb luck, etc. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Calling this a Accident is a way to absolve the owners of responsibility UNDENIABLY and cleary resting not with any police officer or department, but with the Criminals themselves.

That IS the point you are making, and rightly so, but using accident to describe it steps on your message. Dont give those criminals the out!
