Except, of course, where it's skyrocketing....like the formerly "quiet" parts of town:
- While Chicago Police Department leaders continue to insist that “crime is down” citywide, crime may not be down in the places where you live, work, or play, according to an analysis of city data by CWBChicago.
In fact, crime reports are at five-year highs in Lincoln Park, the Loop, and Near North neighborhoods which includes River North, Streeterville, the Magnificent Mile, and Gold Coast.
Overall reported crime in the Loop is up 47% over the past five years and 3% compared to last year. The Loop includes Chicago's central business district, Theater District, and Millenium Park, among other popular attractions.
The CWB Site has a bunch of graphs and explanations of how crime, especially violent crimes, are hitting five year highs. They also reveal exactly how Special Ed and his predecessors pretend overall crime is down:
- On paper, crime is down by about 350 incidents in the Uptown neighborhood. But the reduction is not due to a massive decline in serious crimes. Instead, police have essentially stopped enforcing drug laws on the streets. As a result, there have been about 400 fewer narcotics crimes reported in Uptown this year as five years ago.
So, yes, crime is down by 350 cases in Uptown. But only because police have made 396 fewer drug arrests—just 44 this year compared to 440 during the same period five years ago.

10 years ago the Loop was a ghost town on nights and weekends. Now with all the housing going in, it has become the new Happy Hunting Ground. It goes to figure. CPD big-ups and elected pols assumed it would stay the same as it had before the population shift. Resources were pulled or simply not replaced. And then you end-up with increased crime once the criminals realize it is a soft target.
Making it even more inviting: Lesser criminal shit heads have easy access to the loop via CTA. Greater criminal shit heads just drive to it in the cars they jacked.
When is enough going to be enough? I mean what has to happen to prove that criminals need to be locked-up? We've decriminalized nearly ever crime possible in Chicago. Criminals are not caught. When they are caught, violent offenders are back on the street in hours. And no one is prosecuted.
You cannot tell me for one minute that the uptick in crime did not impact Amazon's decision to not build here. That and this city basically sits on the knife edge of falling into complete rioting and chaos.

Dumb question but is this a federally funded program? Why, out of all the districts to choose from, did they pick 025 given all the problems that that hell hole has had over the years? Is the extra 4th watch being added just an excuse to give the Commander an extra bump in numbers at Compstat? Is this all just a ploy to try to make him look good and to cover his gross incompetence?
First, the police would love to enforce the drug laws but politicians made it so they can’t. Second, the courts have never really punished the drug law violators even back when the politicians let the police be the police. Thirdly, the courts are definitely going easy on drug offenses now; example recent SCC story about tiny $300 bond for an offender caught with a major amount of Heroin(same drug that has national attention for ODs and addiction). I won’t even get into the violent crime offenders that are free to walk the streets in Cook county. You see, the police are not the problem. They have rules, procedures, and laws they must follow. Politicians don’t.

There is some validity to the notion that proactive policing actually creates an appearance of an increase in crime. Since Chicago (and the FBI) rely on generated case reports in their number crunching, an increased number of generated case reports equals an “increase in crime”. Therefore, An increase or decrease in narcotics case reports have much more of an impact on the data then, let’s say, armed robberies, which are less frequent.

I am retired from the job and I carry concealed. I stopped going to the theaters in the Loop because they do not allow concealed weapons , even if you are retired. Parking in those cavernous garages and walking dark downtown streets, I do not feel safe. And, I rarely see the police either walking or driving by.

I was in 010 in the early 90's when they rolled out " Community Policing". The captains were transferred out and lieutenants placed as WC. Everyone was going on steady watches. Supervisors did not have bidding and clout and favoritism ruled the day. There was a 4th watch with a 1800 hrs roll call. Everything old is new again.

It's hard to get most people to listen to a crime stats debate or critique. Engage Tribune Crime Reporters on Twitter is one idea. If they keep getting heat, they might pressure their bosses. If not, its available for public consumption.
Relax, close your eyes and imagine a large caravan of National Guard tanks rolling up Michigan Ave and heading west on Chicago Ave. What will the cry babies do then?

Let me guess! That Judge was the Honorable Matthew Coughlan? The ONLY effing judge to NOT receive the mandatory 60% retention vote. We need to change this judicial retention system. If there is no vote, that should count as a "NO" to retention. As it Currently stands, no vote on the ballot counts as a "Yes" on retention!

I stopped going to the theaters in the Loop because they do not allow concealed weapons...

When you see a sign with a slash thru a handgun that only contains to the State of Illinois concealed carry law.

or righteous concealed carrier involved in a shooting in

Sgt. J.W. who skipped 3000 spots to be merit promoted was nominated by the now federally criminally charged former police commander. Is her promotion Legitimate? Or perhaps it was also paid for since were pretty certian ther commander is motivated by ill gotten gains!
