$1 Million for This?

So evidently, no one in the Groot administration ever heard about seiche waves, winter storms or erosion. This was the bike path off Lake Shore Drive the other day:

A cool million dollars for this.

Seven months ago it looked like this:

While we're all for repair work, something a bit sturdier than asphalt should probably be used to prevent long term damage. After all, taxpayer dollars are getting damn scarce around these parts.

Lake Michigan is a powerful force that is constantly trying to reclaim the areas that man has taken from it. The constant erosion of the concrete will never stop. After the Chicago fire, areas of the lake were claimed and filled in with the debris. Streeterville is built over the Lake. So are areas on LSD & high rises built right on the water. Erosion everywhere with water flooding in. Bad for the taxpayers as this costs us plenty for maintenance every year. But great for the connected contractors who do the work and then make campaign donations to our Democrat politicians who in turn reward those contractors with more work. Yes, that asphalt won’t last long, and they know it, but it’s done for biker & runner vote. Should have left the lakefront all beach then there would be some much area you would have no problem socially distancing to please our guardians Lightfoot & Pritzker!!!!

With asphalt that new, you don't need much new asphalt oil, sand, or aggregate.

I am sure that the City got a great deal on the repaving. / s

Why do bikers need an additional layer of asphalt on top of what appears to be concrete. They can’t ride on concrete? From the picture it appears to be inches from the water. Who came up with that stupid idea? Are they new in town? Unfamiliar with the fluctuations of Lake Michigan?

The new County bike path in Forest Glen becomes submerged after every good rain, especially where it parallels the river, there a bike goof can be swept away because the trail is at least a foot below the water. Only a matter of time before some twit's little kid gets sent downtown clutching their handle bars in the strong current. Frost alone will lift enough of that trail to require repavement.

It's all about the mighty tax payer dollars. Use asphalt as a bandage, when the waves come in it will tear up the asphalt and the same political company comes out again to make more repairs. I agree how about using cement?

The pro of this is if it was concrete it would be about 5 million dollars. The Con of this is that they will be repairing it every year because the city never learns and always goes the cheap route.

Let’s see, path and beaches basically closed for the season, path just reopened two weeks ago and only now they’re getting around to paving it. Wonder how long that six figure repair patch took? Maybe FlexSeal would have been better.

No regard for the leaching petroleum, crumbling sediments making it into the protected waters, dilution rate and high water bills will cover that cost. What happened to Goin’Green?
Asphalt (ash-fault to S&S smooters and tampers) is a third cheaper than concrete, which can’t be overlaid successfully. But that asphalt will be replaced 50 times before any concrete would start to spall, unless it’s low bid concrete. One thing for sure, if they used the same Low Bid donor that did my side street, it should last until April before S&S sends out a pothole crew.

It’s about jobs.
Like Larri’s city hall office renovation last August. $220,000 in TIFF and she’s been there about 4 months out of the last 10 because of being closed for the flu or she’s either out of town during turbulent and challenging times.

Scc, if you use something sturdier that asphalt, it will last a long time and then it will not be necessary to repair it very often. If this happens all the connected asphalt companies will not be able to fleece the citizens of this shooting gallery out of additional tax monies.

The new asphalt is a nice new invitation to the crazy bikers who use the lakefront path to train for the Tour de France. The bikers pay no attention to the people who are actually trying to keep to the proper lanes and just yell at anyone they think is in their way. The sidewalk that goes over the Outer Drive Bridge and then joins the lakefront trail at Ohio St. Beach is the worst for potential-pedestrian collisions.
