Dog Catchers
We pointed this out years ago, probably more than a decade:
Amid excessive overtime and a lack of recruitment by the Chicago Police Department, new data show that CPD police officers have been bogged down with answering animal-related calls for service despite the fact that a city department is dedicated to providing the service.
Whether it's Chicago police officers loading stray dogs into their patrol cars, or officers spending their own money on leashes and dog food, they've been busy with animals. The problem is putting a spotlight on the city's embattled Department of Animal Care and Control.
Animal Control - if you're lucky - has two vans on the street - one north and one south. They do all sorts of complaints, removals (dead and alive), assist on search warrants, and occasionally an investigation (barking animals, dog being abused, tied up outside with out water/shade, etc) along with chasing strays, which is a low priority job. After all, if the dog is gone when they get there, that's a successful resolution (19-paul).
Cops end up picking up some of the slack, 800 animals the first six months of the year, many placed in foster homes or adopted by cops themselves. But it takes cops away from police responsibilities.
No one is campaigning on animal control issues, and at a billion dollars short next year, no relief is on the horizon.

4 has a lock up for Dogs thanks to Mama woo woo and has for over a year unbelievable
Now that Garrido retired....... What will the city do?
No more desk crews walking dogs.
Animal control has to do their job.....The horror......
"Stray dog" call? Uh huh. Doesn't take much to overload the system with bullshit calls designed to tie up all kinds of police resources while, ummm, something else is going on.
Criminals are stupid, but what's the O/U on them doing this?
Gooood doggie! Err, I mean, thanks Officer.
Chicago has Animal Control? Well, for 26 years I have been pushing a City squad around this city! And tell you in this time I must have seen the City Animal care truck 5 times? They can barely stop by the station to pick up stray dogs let alone arrive on scene at an event involving animals?
There are way to many people who should NOT have pets
Huh? God forbid you tell someone no. I love dogs but that's not my job nor are we equipped to hold strays. Every time you give in and accept, you make the job worse.
Although I’ve hunted pheasant and ruffed grouse behind golden retrievers for nearly fifty years our family always had one more open spot for a dog bed for the “ghetto wolf” that was found roaming a west side alley and shivering in the rain. And if I could not take in another stray you could always count on the female PO’s to do so. Once in 013 we took in and cared for stray for four days-we never used the animal inventory-until we convinced a PPO that it was a custom, or right of passage, for a new guy (or gal) to adopt and take home a canine foundling. This arrangement always worked out well for both the dog and the copper and these relationship’s lasted longer than many marriages. I’ve always knew policemen make excellent dog catchers.
Cook County has a rather large under used animal control unit.
Ask Tommy and boss Toni
I remember years back, working the wagon, we had a dog noose. Used to haul lots of stuff in the truck. Prisoners, dead bodies, dogs, various other property.
Kinda like a U-Haul truck.
Dog meat is the bomb in Asia, of course my Yorkie Poo would disagree...
Dog catching, this oldie but a goody comes to mind.

Had a situation with 15 pit bulls in an apartment, called animal control. 2 female animal control officers responded. Let me tell you, they were fucking studs. They went up there and took the dogs, handled them like Champs. Nothing but respect.
Rather be of service to a dog than half the undeserving people plus the dogs are usually so much nicer to us and more polite. Been spit on lately, kicked, scratched? Not likely it was a dog that did that
The best dog I ever had was a lab mix I found wandering around Human and Lake St. I called him Wesside.
Ok. Meant Homan.
My wife has been training dogs (including some for CPD & CCSO) for 40 years.
She says, "There are no bad dogs, only bad owners."
Now, before somebody jumps in my shit, I will concede that there ARE dogs out there with a head full of bad wire but they are few and far between.
99.9% of all problems with dogs start at the other end of the leash.
I love when these idiots dont want their dogs anymore so they bring them to the station and say "i dont want it anymore or I found him"..well what the fuck are we supposed to do with it? Why dont these "Loving People" bring them to an anti cruelty location or adoption paces?
Lots of snowflakes adopted pets during Wuhan Flu season in 2020, only to return them or drop them off at the police station.
Two of the best dogs I’ve ever had came from the ghetto
One day myself and two coworkers were talking (all CPD). The one officer mentions how their basement flooded when they were away for a long weekend and their Rottweilers cages were flooded. My coworker said, “wait a minute let me get this straight- you left 2 dogs in a cage in your basement for 3 days?” I just left the room.
Get Help ! U Need it … Dog meat is sick
There was a very sad story of a family in burbs up North a few years ago. These idiots lock their 4 dogs up in cages every night in the basement. The damn basement floods from a huge storm and all 4 dogs drown in their cages. Sickening.
Agreed! Y'know how some people shouldn't have kids? Some people shouldn't have dogs either!!!
Dummy, it’s satire. No way you’re a cop.
17+1. But not all are instant kill shots.
Chiang Animal Care and Control needs more funding and to be on the street 24/7. In addition, there were 1 pr 2 vans outside of CACC that helped owners with issues with their pets. They were run by OAWS Chicago amd One Tail At A Time. Paws Chicago has community outreach programs for the south side, amd Anti Cruelty Society has some programs too, where they give dog beds, leashes amd pet food for cats and dogs, PAWs has the same program, usually for Englewood. Look on their websites or call. We need to do more for ani.als, amd Garrido still works with these animals. But we need to make outreach easier for citizens
Cops have enough to do.
Two the best IOD’s I’ve ever had also came from ghetto dogs.
I suppose the same could be said for many of us but I'm referring to the 4 legged creatures nice rebound though well played
