Details still sketchy, but the Officer has been declared deceased:
A Chicago police officer was fatally shot Monday night in the Chatham neighborhood, and another person was later found dead at the shooting scene, sources said.
The shooting was reported during an officer-in-distress call shortly after 8 p.m. in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, according to police radio traffic.
Microphones peaked as officers screamed into their radios while the chaos unfolded and a radio dispatcher tried to pin down the location of the officer who was shot.
The usual midnight posting will be delayed due to the ongoing incident.
UPDATE: Officer Enrique Martinez, age 26, was just shy of three years on the job when he was killed during a traffic stop.
UPDATE: Killer and one accomplice in custody, second accomplice dead, gun recovered.
UPDATE: Traffic stop and shooter killed his own companion while attacking Officer Martinez:
- As officers approached the vehicle one of the occupants opened fire on Martinez, Snelling said, adding that “it sounded like rapid fire.” The officer was struck multiple times. One of the occupants of the vehicle was also struck and killed by the gunfire.

UPDATE: We understand that word filters down slowly through a huge bureaucracy like the Chicago Police Department. And we understand that the job must move forward at all times - calls must be answered, service must be given to those in need. But in cases like today, can't the Department show just a tiny little bit of common sense and read the fucking room?

Even if it was Winter Inspection, give us a break. Some things can wait a day or two. God forbid an Inspector might have to work on a Saturday to do a make-up inspection.

To the other officers on scene, stop screaming into the radio and yelling oh my god, you squeeze off every round into that car turning it into Swiss cheese and u til the offender is dead or incapacitated. Unfortunatly our horrible training and obsession with slow playing and de escalating every situation has made it nearly impossible for an officer to make a split second decision when to shoot and feel justified in doing so. His partners after that burst came out should have pumped it with every round.. instead they are yelling oh my god and screaming into the radio 10-1.. handle business first, then get to the radio. Too many new people when shots are fired go to the radio first and the trigger last..

May his family try to understand that this officer was a noble person who performed his profession well by choosing to serve his fellow citizens in the struggle of humanity. And may the officers fellow active duty officers know there are citizens who appreciate each of them when they place that star or shield on prior to the tour of DUTY. Beyond that it's about seeing if there were gunshots in the area prior so they have an idea of what's going on in that area. Information that could've been used to help these guys make sure they had a ton of pos in the area was stripped from them over politics and that in itself should be enough if we had strong leaders to make sure city council knows about it to their faces. The shooting makes me boil for two reasons. First, the neighborhood where it took place was once a nice, working class area. Now, it's a crap hole. Second, the audio proves the officers saw the perp reaching for something. The officers likely hesitated because they didn't want to catch a beef from COPA. In fact, a cop once told me officers are freezing up on the street. The dead officer didn't have a chance. RIP to him. My sympathies to his friends and loved ones.

Sad to say but you are true. Don’t worry about the radio, I’ve watched videos of 3 or 4 officers at the same time trying to yell 10-1 into the radio during an active gunfight. Start shooting. As for training I agree. Even when an officer shoots they still don’t know if they are justified or not. That’s not just training but also from the news and copa firing officers on justified shootings. All of that makes an officer hesitate. It’s a hard truth you wrote but it’s a truth.

At some point, can't you declare a state of emergency with all of the gun violence? You can thank Auntie Kim’s office for going soft on those. Officers having been charging with the additional felony when they’ve gotten those guns with the button on them. Her office has methodically thrown them out asking if officers “test fired” the weapon. Where’s that supposed to happen? With what resources? Additionally, her policy to not prosecute guns tied to minor traffic stops is as much to blame for keeping these offenders out there. 70% of gun cases brought had ties to Minor traffic stops. Let us remember that Snelling’s last project as a sergeant before his meteoric rise thru the ranks was Force Mitigation and De-Escalation training which started in 2017.
We have been taking this 2 or 3 day training every year since which is making some officers question their survival tactics. These kids in the academy don’t have anything but these kind of classes being taught by officers and sergeants that refuse to work the streets (the bitching for the three or four times a year they have to come out to play police is epic).

Only reason the training is FORCED on you all is so city can be absolved of any liability in the event of OIS. Scanner traffic I listened to had a call of a women that shot someone trying to steal her kia just a few blocks away 8200 ingelside just mins before this shooting went down. The call on the Kia came back not bonified.
Shot spotter could of provided verification on that call too and perhaps this ofc would of had backup on his street stop
