That's right - it's another ShotSpotter miss - one of Brandon's Bodies according to CWB:
Chicago police officers responding to a “burglary in progress” call found a man fatally shot in the backyard of a South Shore home overnight.
CPD took someone into custody at the scene, but they did not receive any calls of shots fired before they found the victim, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Friday. The shooting occurred in a neighborhood that was monitored by the city’s ShotSpotter network until Mayor Brandon Johnson deactivated the system on September 24.
According to dispatch recordings, a homeowner called 911 around 4:30 a.m. to report that someone was trying to break into his house by the side door. Officers were told the possible intruder was pounding on the door, screaming “police,” and they were also advised that the caller’s son had a concealed carry license.

Reminder, we count homicides within the city limits, the CPD counts murders within their jurisdiction. The two will never equal one another.

To the commenters saying expressway shootings shouldn’t count, why not. Prior to Clines statistical wizardry any homicide occurring in Chicago was counted. Regardless of jurisdiction investigating. Even homicides that were discovered outside the city were counted, if it could be conclusively determined that the homicide occurred in the city and the body was dumped outside. The current practice of not counting a homicide if investigated by another agency, plus the whole “death investigation” shenanigans really put the number closer to 700

I have seen a lot during my years on CPD, but this was horrendous to see and hurt my soul. We have a become a sick and evil society.

This number is made up almost entirely of gang members or other criminals being killed by others like them, year after year, with no real loss of innocent lives, aside from the few toddlers out at 3am with their criminal parent, and the occasional random citizen. The higher the number, the more it highlights the failures of the black community and their chosen leaders. The higher the number, the fewer violent criminals roaming the streets. Higher number is a positive for the good citizens of this city.

We really shouldn't be celebrating this tragic milestone. Everyone lost is somebody's loved one. Father, husband (a few), son, brother or friend.
One also has to wonder what the effect of the emergency medical techniques learned from the battlefield have had on the homicide rate. Better, faster treatment, mobile ambulance service with experienced EMTS and hospital trauma centers have all raised the survival rate. Some studies suggest that without modern emergency treatment the homicide rate would be 5 times what it is today. And perhaps the much maligned Shotspotter had it been functioning could have saved 5 or 6 lives this year alone. What are those lives worth?
