Maurer
Bunch of comments today that Jimmy Maurer passed, but we can't find a thing mentioning it in the usual places. We know he had retired, moved far away from here and was experiencing some age related health issues.
We know he had his fans and detractors, and while we didn't appreciate the system he championed (as all outsiders feel), we didn't mind him as an old-style boss. He is/was far better than 99% of what's "running" the Department today.

You mention the word "Savages" one time and your career goes down the shitter . . oh well.
He cared about cops, that was good.
He also cared about himself, not unexpected.

Nice man after retirement. Nice family. But he had no problem pushing the likes of guy like Finnegan for the sake of numbers no matter what they did.. then when scandles broke he’d be silent. Have roll calls on nye like Patton with his dog and tell sos to storm Cabrini and home invade every apartment to take every gun out of the buildings… when dozens of beefs came down weeks later it was silence as long as he got pictures of guns on the table.. many good cops fell for his crap, got in trouble then lost their jobs because of his false promises and his pressure to go out and commit crimes and him then being silent… I revolted and was dumped… best choice ever especially after the indictments came down…. Clear conscience here…. Jerry and crew, gfy

Super Chief Jimmy Maurer always reminded me of Yankees star Reggie Jackson who had a candy bar named after him.
You open up the candy bar and it tells you how great he is.

he was an arrogant prick who tried screw over a few fto's immediately right after their graduation while he was chief of patrol

He passed in Park Ridge.
He was born in 1946 but no mention of of being drafted, serving in the military, or serving in Vietnam.
RIP.
I remember a story Maurer told on the WLS Roe Conn show.
A young copper helped Maurer change a flat tire on the Kennedy Expressway without knowing who he was.
Maurer asks the kid how he liked the job.
The kid responds one of the problems with the job are the bad bosses running the department.
The next day, Maurer calls the kid to 35th street up into his 5th floor office surprising the kid as he stands there in his Chief of Patrol costume.
Maurer then says he lays into the kid letting him know who he is and how great a boss he is.
What an Absolute Grade-A Douchebag.
Good boss.
Everyone has their upside and downside. He was, as you said, 100 times better than most of what we have now.
You see a Jim Maurer heading into the light and then you put on the news and see that embarrassing fool in New Orleans.
All you can say is.. HOLEEEEEY SHIT! How did we get here,
Dugan's Bar on Milwaukee is permanently closed now.
However, if you flush any of the toilets in the men's room and listen closely, you can still hear him telling stories of all the fuckin' great things he did.

Whenever 023rd District Captain Ralph PRICE would send Maurer reports to Area 3, he would intentionally rig the staples on the paperwork so Maurer would cut his hands on them when he would pull it out of the department envelope.
- - Good Times! 😂 😂 😂

I remember Jim as a Cadet in 1968. That particular group of Cadets produced many great bosses. He never forgot a face or a friend. Rest in Peace my friend....Rest on Peace.
RIP Jim, your leadership is sorely missed here in CPD

He was the King of sharing promotional exams with his cronies. Ask Chris Kennedy and Steve Georgas. They definitely studied THE test provided by Maurer instead of studying FOR the test like the rest of us.

He was a good guy, loved the troops and had no malice. This something missing in today’s exempts.
As young pup, my first contact with Maurer was him showing up at another officer involved shooting! He was dressing down a Watch Lieutenant for showing up late to the scene. Then he pulled the Street Sgt, aside and started giving verbal direct orders to get the involved Officer into back seat of the Sgt’s car! And block some streets off……….
As I was collecting the names, stars, and beat numbers for the paper officer. Maurer walked up to me and grabbed my elbow and lowered his voice to a whisper? He then asked me where was the involved officers weapon? He then asked if I knew if the officer involved carried a 2nd piece? At which time he walked me to the involved officer and had me check the officer? When that was completed. I watched Maurer ask the involved officer if he was married, and who we should be calling for him?
As things were wrapped up and everyone was heading to Station, Area and Hospital. Maurer walked up to me and introduced himself as Jimmy Maurer! And then he said something I had only seen in the Corps? He was walking away when he stopped and walked back to me to ask me my full name and ask if my old man was on the Job?
Years later when he was a deputy chief he yelled at me about me causing some shit on a job? But it was more like a counseling then reprimand?
Maurer impressed me!
He knew what the Job was?
He Did the Job?
He spoke up about the Job?
And most of all he took care of his Officers!
May God bless this man.
He was a really nice guy.
I met Maurer when I was in Gangs West and later worked for him in Organized Crime, as far as I’m concerned he was Good,Fine leader. I know there are always going to be those who dislike someone they work for, but Maurer seemed to always have good intentions and give good advice. And yes I was at the “Round Table” a number of times. RIP Jim, GODSPEED. See you when I see you
All I can say is Good Riddance ~ hope he's roasting with the Screaming Skull.
Old Guard Machine Enforcer, RIP...

RIP, however he was a legend in his own mind. Had a few run ins with him, his ego preceded him.
At least he was competent. And the way a boss should be. If you were in with him he would make you. You would go places. He was the definition of clout.
You forgot about Patty Casey who was in a hospital bed when maurer gave her the test.
ralph price , what a great guy hahahaahahaha (stroke job deluxe)
Wow. Old school bosses were the best. Or the worst. Take your pick. You were gold if you were one of their guys. They had no fears of Federal Courts or Consent Decrees. Call my guy so he can call your guy. Maurer retired a millionaire like the rest of his cohorts. God bless. Played the Game well. I'm sure he knew where the bodies were buried which gave him the cover he needed. If we knew where the bodies were buried we would be untouchable too...
Screaming Skull = super asshole
He had you search another officer for a weapon?
Well at least he had the balls to say it like it was. A thing of the past with the present white shirts
He was a cadet and then came on the job.
He was black balled after he had the episode at OHare with the female commissioner Didnt think that was right
You were good at Colletti’s to on Wednesday
Never forget the business card with his pic and his dog overlooking the troops. Looked like Patton
He used to be there when it was Brewsky, right be Dugans opened
I was a young copper in 20. We had a chase that ended with the car flipping at the s curve on foster behind 16(wasn't there at the time). Worked out well. Next day we had the district party at the woods. Jim mauer comes up to me saying good work. He also said "If your doing good police work and make a mistake I will back you 110%. If your an idiot I will fuck you". He had the working coppers back in my book. Rip.
Buck Buckshot Says:
The Days of “the Real Police” are long gone. Those who were part of it were a special breed. Pure Bluebloods, with Nerves and Spines of Steel.
Quincy Magoo Says:
Chicago PD Promotions have NEVER been on the legit. Pay to Play corruption that has now spread nationwide. The guys and gals who have played by the rules have NEVER had a real full, non restricted by politics chance. Many retirees who retired on a patrolmans salary should be collecting a Sgt; Ly, Capt. Or Commander’s pension, and many retired Sgts, Lt’s, Capts. And Commanders should be collecting Patrolmans pensions. They are still fucking many of us, even long after the job has ended. ALL the dishonest ones will answer for this in the Afterlife.
Mauer was a good leader...a great Boss? IDK...He was in the good ole boys club for sure...He once yanked a longtime terrible boss (Lt) out of 018 a long time ago. I always gave him credit for that. Thanks Boss...! RIP JIm
This sounds like something a certain employee at OEMC that is allegedly in very big trouble would do. The dog picks you out and then yells at you in the office hoping to get you to react in order to write you up for insubordination. It is a good puppy, it lays on its back and lets the right person pet it.
Like him or not he was a leader, something of a bygone era in policing. Now, it's a clown show and DEI workshop. RIP to a fine man.
He probably could have explained punctuation to you.
Maybe he thought you were attractive?
I think the implication here is if he was 22 years old in 1968 at the height of the Vietnam Nam war, why wasn’t he drafted before “he was a cadet”? I’m not making any judgements but the questioner might be. Maybe the questioner even believes he should’ve volunteered.
Those not alive during that time don’t understand what it was like, but there were all kinds of ways to avoid the draft and the country was torn apart by whether we should’ve been in that war. You can’t equate it with wars that happened after 9/11. Before August 1965 you couldn’t be drafted if you were married. One day in August 1965 Johnson changed it to effective at midnight you also had to have children to not be drafted. There was a whole lot of marriages that afternoon before the additional requirement kicked in.
I recall that as well. Can’t let the watch commander date a sergeant on the watch and then allow the sergeant to run the watch.
I remember that
The only thing tested is your juice and popularity, nothing about actual knowledge.
Don't you care about yourself? And your family?
5th floor?
Did he start "Operation Just Cause" back in the day? Yes or no will suffice. Older officers will understand.
I'm sure Maurer had a secretary to open those envelopes, read them, and brief JM on them.
Great leaders are not always loved by everyone, but they do guide you out of bad situations when you find yousef in one. Like him or not, if you were doing the right thing and still found yourself in a bad situation, you would prefer Maurer in your corner than some of today's DEI managers posing as supervisors.
Back in 1992 Jim Schodtler and Jackie Healy were shot at a currency exchange on Clark St by some savage Nigerians. Maurer was tasked with bringing these animals to justice by any means necessary and he did. He took on a lot of dirty jibs killed a lit of beefs and helped out a lot of coppers. How about as fellow coppers we leave it at that. RIP to a good man and a good copper.
I knew Jim as a Cadet, up through the ranks and until the day he died. Much can be said both good and bad about anyone, especially a high-profile guy, on this job. We all live in a time, place and situation every waking day of our professional lives - working these streets. Sometimes we make good decisions and other times poor ones. I know two things: his maker will judge him, and I lost a lifelong friend. RIP
I remember in the early 2000’s Deputy Chief Mauer called in all of the recently promoted SGTs, assigned in Area 3, for a meeting at Belmont / Western. The topic ? Vehicle Pursuits. He started the meeting by holding up the latest version of the chase order and stated, “This is horseshit, there will be no chases in Area 3 unless you are pursuing for a killed or injured policeman or family member, then you can chase until the wheels fall off”. Another quote from that meeting, “ You as SGTs are responsible for the physical, mental and legal well being of the police officers you supervise”. Chief Mauer was a good boss that cared about troops, God rest his soul.
Yep, he actually was involved in the removal of two Lieutenants from 018. Both from different incidents and both equally outrageous.
I remember when a crowd of “ activists” from Cabrini Green where staging a protest in from of 018 and threatened to storm the station. Maurer formed a line in front of the station to prevent them from taking the station over. He stood there in line with the rest of us. A cops cop.
Have not thought of that arrogant fkr Peterson in a long time. Now I will return him to the forgotten assholes file
HQ used to be at 11th and State.
We wish he can do it from the grave and yank Barz out of 018. What an awful boss we got. Talks out of both ends of his fat mouth and is a lying POS.. Fucks with PO’s just because he can. He’s a miserable M/F.
Are his initials DR?
He was in the Navy reserve
He got rid of the “humper” if I remember correctly
Ralph Price a connected individual if there ever was one. His mother was tight with Rodriguez. Price worked in HQ and went to law school while he was working. Nice if you can get it.
Thats right he did...He had the balls to do things that other bosses didn't...BY then OEMC could print records of beat car activity. There's lots of redundant paperwork in CPD that we do "just because we have always done it that way"
