More Police = Less Crime?
In the City of Chicago, good news regarding the capabilities, performance, or achievements of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) does not sell well. A city in which lawmakers and media are in thrall to the mercurial passions of progressive activists, CPD’s accomplishments are routinely ignored, dismissed as negligible, or otherwise undervalued to encourage the acceptance of alternatives to policing.
On Sunday, March 9, as hundreds of teenagers gathered in Streeterville, an argument near the AMC River East movie theater resulted in gunfire and a tourist shot. Weeks later, on March 28, Streeterville residents were again forced to endure another chaotic weekend of teens creating a commotion. On the Saturday evening, as teens again ran amok through the neighborhood, gunfire was heard near 400 North Cityfront Plaza Drive. When Chicago Police arrived, they discovered a 15-year-old with a graze wound to his leg.
With Streeterville propelled into successive maelstroms of teen takeovers in which two were injured by gunfire, City Council members summoned up the need to lower a city curfew in the area from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. As lawmakers debated the value of altering the curfew, Streeterville residents braced for yet another weekend of unruly teens turning their neighborhood into an outdoor insane asylum.
But when it was all said and done, it wasn't pleas from politicians or vague threats of curfews or even the "interrupters" who never seem to be around when violence is breaking out. It was 200 additional cops flooding the zone and making sure shit didn't get stupid.
Unfortunately, CPD has strayed so far from being able to do that on a consistent basis without cancelling days off, restricting time due and generally f#$%ing up everyone's weekends. At the most basic, we used to have the old Area Task Forces, SOS, Gang Enforcement and TRU, entire units that could be assembled and deployed in short order.
Of course, back then we also had a pile of federal money, three Tact teams and two Gang teams per District and a full roster of cars - we worked the times of a dozen Rapids and two Wagons on weeknights. Today's Officers will never know those manpower numbers.
In any event, check out The Contrarian article linked up top. Besides adequate manpower, you know what else works? Accountability for criminal actions (i.e. jail and/or prison.)

Speaking of canceled days off, or using personal days, etc. When did it become the norm to tell these brass holes exactly where we're going, where we're staying and provide itineraries? This shit hole department wants to control every aspect of our lives, including private lives. If there's time on the books, restrictions or not...why do they need to know. I'm not going to deploy from a boat. They're not sending a car to pick me up from the hotel.

I remember going to work for a 7 AM roll call and see cars along the curb or in parking lots with the hood up, trunk open and some back seats alongside of the cars. I know exactly what happened over night. " Ryan's Raiders " had hit the district. This group was commanded by Captain Ryan who was in command of about 50 or so men along with squad cars, wagons and 3-wheelers. They would roust the district from head to toe. They were nicknamed " Ryan's Raiders ". There would be peace in the valley for a good period of time. Oh, yes, and a few broken night sticks along the curbs. The glorious mid 60's.
We all know why Swirly-Cone won't make a public announcement aimed at the youtes to knock off the bullshit! It's easier in his mind to control the laws than it is to appeal to the parents of these asshole kids

Hint: Day off, no pay non-disciplinary outweighs a personal day.

You won't find many takers for this. Retired and left the city one year later and went into private industry and into a nice suburb. Life is much better.
I was on the job from 1968 to 2002. I do not recall gang teams in the districts,but we had three tact teams and a vice team over the years. When hiring was down the WC was authorized to take the entire tact team and put them in beat cars.
The mayor, local media and our own state's attorney has said time and time again "we are not going to police our way out of this problem" (problem meaning black and brown crime). They (meaning our socialist overlords) are addressing the "root causes" of crime and "gun violence". Not sure why my days off are cancelled every fucking summer then. We all know the clowns are burning down the circus. {Honk Honk}

The department claims sanctity of human life is the highest priority while if that is true than tac needs to start being dispatched to all jobs that involve the potential for someone to get hurt or killed. Domestic, assaults and etc
For real. And get ready boys and girls. Weekends off going to be cancelled in a couple of weeks then all the way into October. Juneteenth to Mexican Independence Day is what separates the babies from the real police in the CPD. I expect half of the 20-something 3-year wonders on my watch to be on the medical by July 4th.
Restrictions? {snicker} Half of the 3rd watch in my district stays over for 4 hours to take naps or watch ESPN in the weight room. They don't answer calls and leave the beat cars without any gas. OT restrictions. LOL

back in those days , no one man cars on 1st or 3rd watch after 1973 and no down cars. every district had three wagons, some like 1 &12 had four wagons.
