Three dozen police captains pair off in a Chicago conference room to play a game: They must start a sentence with the last word their partner used.
Many exchanges are nonsensical, full of one-upmanship using difficult words and laughter. But the improvisation game eventually makes sense.
“What we are trying to do, is get you to listen to the end of the sentence,” says Kelly Leonard, wrapping up the improvisational exercise. “If my arm was a sentence, when do most people stop listening? Always the elbow! But then you’re missing everything that goes after… and sometimes that’s critical information.”
The police captains who have flown in from departments across the country nod. “I definitely do that,” some call out.
Officials at the University of Chicago Crime Lab’s Policing Leadership Academy brought members of The Second City, Chicago’s storied improv theater, to teach police leaders the more diverse skills found in improv exercises — like thinking on your feet, reserving judgment and fully listening.
So how much is this costing taxpayers? Especially the part about flying in captains from "across the country." Which jurisdictions are paying for this nonsense?
Go read it all, if only to be disgusted by what passes as "training" for all the wrong reasons.

The University of Chicago Crime Lab is a fucking joke. They have data sharing agreements with the department. They can see everything, while they will deny it.

I was in the academy in 86 we had an exercise in " social awareness ", (I believe it was called). Everyone had to stand up and tell a horrible racist stereotype they were taught as a child. After numerous accounts of different racial groups having sex with their daughters, eating pigeons, and raping women, it was my turn. I stated "..I was always taught to love my neighbor and all men are created equal ..". This pissed off the class even MORE than they were already pissed off...
I know this is a strange concept for Chicago, but maybe if you did not have proven leadership skills you should have not been promoted in the first place.

NYPD officers will not be attending a joint improvisation workshop with the community this summer. Officers will be assigned to patrol because of shortage.
captains in other departments start their day doing roll call and then go out on the street answering calls,,,,,, Chicago captains make coffee for the commander then go out on the street to get lunch for the commander

I loved that training. A bunch of us went out to a liquid lunch each day. (2 day training)

I don't think there's anybody in law enforcement who has ever worked the street that needs anybody to show them how to "think on their feet." It's literally a survival skill.

4 yr degree and higher and absolutely NO street experience and this is the result unfortunately. Sad but true.
