Skip a Grade?

Well why not?

  • Chicago Public Schools is trying to make sure more students from a range of backgrounds are able to skip an entire grade or accelerate in a single subject.

Board members were briefed Wednesday on proposed changes to the acceleration policy and will vote at their July 24 meeting.

In the past, few students were allowed to jump ahead a grade or get accelerated instruction in math or reading, or both, and they were mostly from schools with few low-income students, according to data obtained by WBEZ. In a statement, CPS said most students came from North Side schools.

We can hear the cries of "racism!" already:

  • The current policy for skipping a grade or moving ahead in reading and math calls for schools or parents to refer students and says they are only eligible if they exceed standards on the state standardized test. But only 4% of elementary school students exceed standards, and no students in either math or reading hit that mark in more than 100 schools.

It isn't like the teachers are actually helping the kids learn anything.

What's up with the department allowing people with metal disorders on the job. The 602 250lb black male instructor who worked at the academy, teaching recruits for years, decided to come out as a Tranny. Now he/she is being hidden at headquarters. Kinda hard to hide a big buff dude with tits and a wig.

I skipped 4th grade, and I’m a person of color. Then again, I went to school in 70’s. Back then teachers actually taught.

Check out attendance records and you'll see most CPS grads skipped a few grades.

The things about being double promoted, as any of us dinosaurs can tell you, are these:

You are now amongst both a year older than you and effectively not known to you as your classmates. Being a year older, you are seen by these new classmates as fresh meat, aka, easy to bully.

Your new 'teacher' is highly unlikely, as in rarely, capable of even noticing this, let alone being in any way helpful to nullify it.

You, being younger, then have to discover how to deal with this yourself.

Both the 'teacher' considering you to be source of any discord and the bully breed imagining you are weak.

A sharpened pencil is now your friend.

I shall say no more.

Wait a minuet, how about the 32 or so students from Whitney Young who scored perfect scores on the ACT after taking the test 6 times? There was another school of minorities with similar results that was pushed under the table because they knew red flags would be up if two schools of minorities had that many perfect scores.
And how about the school with 100% of their students getting admitted to college? They are wearing Ivy League hats and other top grade school hats but they all applied to and were admitted to Chicago State and Chicago City Colleges who accept anyone no questions asked no entrance requirements. You can fool the public all the time.

Dude, there is no one from the hood that should be skipping a grade in CPS. Stop thinking all cultures and backgrounds should have the same percentages of Doogie Housers.

I have seen really good teachers struggle to teach the kids but the kids do not care and there is no pushback from parents, usually single mothers. Then, there some really bad teachers who should not be in the system, Then there are really bad Board policies that just push the kids until they graduate. The entire system needs to be torn apart and rebuilt. You can't teach to someone who just does not care and calls it " acting white".

The governor has more important things to worry about. After Joey Chestnut won the national hotdog eating contest, JB Lizzo is only interested now in holding on to his state of Illinois title. He facing a strong challenge by Ald. Jason Ervin and his wife. Does anyone know if Patrick Mahomes still is the Kansas state champ?

Instead of skipping a grade, why not have all the CPS scholars who can’t read or do math repeat a grade. End the jobs program for CTU and end social promotion.

Looking at this from another angle. Assuming double promoting moves the students toward their diploma faster, wouldn’t the cost to educate them be reduced?

Remember the Tiny Dancer fighting with Karen Lewis, “ I will not have those fucking kids on the fucking street!”

Lewis responded. “This isn’t about EDUCATING, this is about warehousing!”

Then Tiny D really lost his shit.

Ahhhh, good times in Chiraq.

I can't say the annual frequency but some CPS kids have skipped grades in the past 20 years. They can and do give tests / evaluations for doing so on a case by case basis.

Years ago, I had a parent call me at home yelling at me because I gave her son an F on an essay. Problem was that he couldn’t read the words in the essay and copied it from a source. Mama’s response: so what. He turned in an essay.

Now there's a thought! I was assigned three hood kids - 5th graders - to tutor in reading. We were using a curriculum that was designed for English as a second language students, with good reason. None of the kids could even recite the alphabet, so starting at ground level was absolutely needed.
