Should Have Taken the Plea

His accomplice got four years, out in two and on the street already. Instead, he gets twelve years:

  • A judge on Thursday sentenced an 18-year-old man to 12 years in prison for shooting the son of a Chicago police officer during a botched robbery outside a Morgan Park bar in 2023. Prosecutors said Kevin Ross, then 17, opened fire at point-blank range after the off-duty officer’s 22-year-old son tackled him during the hold-up.

Ross pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder and must serve at least 85% of his sentence before he is eligible for parole, according to the terms imposed by Judge Diana Kenworthy.

His accomplice, 21-year-old Christopher Brooks, pleaded guilty in July 2024 to discharging a firearm during an attempted armed robbery. Judge Maria Kuriakos-Ciesil sentenced him to four years. Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Brooks was paroled in April 2025 after half of that time.

He's required to do 85% of the sentence, but if he's been in custody, that's all credited. Still going to be inside for around eight or nine years though. Sometimes, the system works.

Always take the plea, get a real judge, you might do a long stretch.

BTW, kids father is a good guy.

Did have a bit of an ego, got mad when people out ran him.

We laughed.

He settled down.

These sentences are a joke. 12 years for shooting someone point blank in the chest? Maybe , just maybe if the States Attorney’s office actually prosecuted crimes instead of giving these assholes sweetheart plea deals and if these judges would just one time drop the hammer where people give a double take at the sentence crime might actually go down.

12 years for shooting someone during the course of a robbery? He should have received 50. No wonder Chicago is crime ridden. Very little punishment

He did take the plea, still not enough time IMO. His partner should have gotten more as well.

Don't know if dad was carrying while out in the bar or if the shitheads got the drop on him. We all know the department says you're not supposed to. I always carried off duty, at the bar or not. Fuck the department rules...

The Illinois Correction system seems to be a government of themselves. I have seen many long sentences reduced to almost nothing by the IDC. i highly doubt this thug will serve anywhere near the term dictated by the judge.

A gunshot wound to the chest is pretty traumatic. I wonder what sentences hear would have gotten had his victim been a member of the judicial or political establishment. What gave him the bright idea to go to trial? Did he think there was somehow a weak case? What was offered in the plea deal? There are so many unanswered questions and please don’t respond with DEI comments.

Am I the only one that thinks the sentences for attempted murder (that is what this was) and murder should be the same?

I don't see why a thug gets less time because the paramedics and surgeons were able to undo their handiwork.
