No Retro for CFD?

A couple comments late last week (rumors as of now):

  • City just told cfd they have no money for retro , sorry .
  • Many Chicago Fire Fighters are being told they WILL NOT be paid retroactive pay going back to 2021. The reason?   The city is saying THEY ARE BROKE.   WTF?

Again, rumors. But a couple points:

  • if the City is refusing to abide by the negotiated Contract, wouldn't that void out all sorts of stuff....like prohibitions on job actions and ::cough cough:: strikes?
  • the City is also refusing to pay a court ordered judgement in favor of the PBPA regarding VRI money owed that is racking up thousands, perhaps millions in interest and penalties....what party was it screaming about obeying court orders just a few months ago?

And we certainly hope that some people in the different unions are looking into this historical precedent from north of the border:

  • Wallace Edwards' 13-year war to collect a debt from the Soviet Union is over. The Rusians have surrendered. Edwards, head of Waltham Press Ltd., won a 1973 court judgment against the Soviet government for a $26,000 printing job he performed for it during the Expo '67 World's Fair, but the Soviets refused to pay.

Until Thursday, that is. Assailed by Edwards' seizure of a Soviet ship in Toronto harbor and his assault on the Russian Embassy's operating funds, the Soviets have agreed to settle the debt.

After attempting to stiff the Canadian printer for tens of thousands of dollars, the enterprising tradesman sued, won a judgement against the Soviet Union, and had the sheriffs seize a nearly 600-foot freighter valued in the tens of millions until the commies came up with his money.

We would be amused beyond measure should the CFD or the PBPA get a lien against some Chicago properties, like the Bean or the Picasso or maybe portions of the CTA or an entire airport, and then put it up for sale unless Conehead came up with the money owed.

We can always hope.

Don’t forget, the city also said no to paying the sgts, LT’s and Capts retro for the me too from the FOP. the three unions filed a lawsuit two weeks ago to force the city to pay.

Ideas for firefighters:
1. Go into court to get a wage assignment on conehead, the 50 thieves, the fire commissioner, etc., etc.. They probably won’t get one, but the news should be a national embarrassment for this shit hole Chicago.
2. Ask Trump to not pay any federal money to the city for anything until the city pays the smoke eaters. I think Trump would jump on the opportunity to call conehead & fatso incompetent and say they run a shit hole. Everybody loves the FF. Again national embarrassment
3. Ask a few BOBers to ‘steal’ a few fire trucks simultaneously, parking them in the burbs with for sale signs with the mayor’s phone number. National attention. I’m sure the BOBers would be proud to do this.
4. Setup a class action Fund Me account for the amount owed. When the city finally pays donate the $ to Fire Memorial (is there one) or Children’s Hospital.
5. TV news says your equipment is damaged. Refuse to use anything that will hurt you or kill you.

Unless the court freezes city bank accounts or holds city leaders in contempt of court they essentially can tell CFD and CPD unions to eat a dick. This is what a dying city looks like, stiffing their first responders. Don’t get attached to this job at this point just disappointment.

The pbpa filed suit over the retro raises not given to supervisors two years ago. The city decided to ignore the contract and arbitration award.

If a viable threat was made to put a lien on Chicago properties, I guarantee the city would magically find the money to pay up the VRI issue and to pay CFD. No way the city could afford to let a threat like that go public.

The PBPA had nothing to do with the VRI lawsuit. It was officers and supervisors who independently worked with an attorney. Both unions were not involved nor interested, now they are acting like they care.

City dont need 36,000 employees to run the city. Police and fire are 15,000 so 21,000 to make city run? Could prob do with half that. Same with CPS, county, City college, state with 65,000 employees. Every level of government bloated with patronage jobs that are bankrupting the system. Endless taxes and government long term and short term debt that leads to endless stress on taxpayers.

9/15/2025 09:20:00 AM

Just to be clear: the city is not broke. There is plenty of revenue coming into the city coffers. In 2024, the City brought in over $16 billion in revenue. Their expenses simply exceed the revenue. The options are to increase revenue (more taxes, fees, fines, licenses, etc.) or reduce expenses.

I heard the firehouses are resorting to food pantries to stock their cupboards. No more firehouse chili, Russian Royal caviar, New York strips and rock lobster tails. Peanut butter and jelly on days old discounted bread and jailhouse baloney sandwiches for the smoke eaters. And their cable for their billboard flat screens are a thing of the past. That's when they are working. Its a sad state of affairs when the failing CTU teachers are going on cruises to the Monte Carlo, Maldives, Bora Bora, etc. living the high life after soaking the Cook County property taxpayers for all their personal opulence. Police and fire are told to sacrifice. Teachers manipulate the mayor for mo money, mo money. And assistance to illegal alien migrants. Equity. Inclusion. And then there's the daily struggle for survival by beaten down police and fire.

Not sticking up for Mayor here. But there are a dozen articles stating that the new contact includes back pay. “Johnson said the city has budgeted for the back pay included in the contract. It's unclear exactly how much the back pay and raises will cost, but the total will undoubtedly reach the hundreds of millions.”

Mayor Johnson should collude with the private sector red light and speed camera vendors and install 100 or so additional cameras or so to generate revenues allocated to pay down payroll debts. Once payroll gets paid, justify them forever surveillance cameras active making cash money to repair and replace outdated or rusted beyond repair fire rigs. This too is a public safety crisis. Money is not the issue but rather the intestinal fortitude of the people's elected representative alderpersons to approve a permanent common sense funding approach to getting critical public safety shortfall complexities resolved. Enact annual exponentially increasing 911 taxes or hike insanely expensive life saving public ambulance service fees collected for the city on behalf of a private third party for profit company. Taxes, cameras fines and service fees are just essential cash cow funding mechanisms never going away. Both for private for profit city vendors and the city itself.

These could be events that push the city into bankruptcy. Imagine (1) big judgments for CFD and CPD members based on back pay, (2) a resulting bond rating downgrade (thanks governor Fatso!) and then (3) a recession which seizes up the bond markets, particularly the junk bond status that the city will have fallen into. Boom. Insolvent. Done.

I retired 21 years ago in a buyout from the city. Daley refused to give the retirees their back pay and the unions agreed, mumbles said the city couldn't afford it. Please..... he also paid all our vacation and holidays and time due out of grade at a loss of about 3.50 an hour times 33 days lost. Union was useless, members filed suit and won about 15 years ago. City appealed and the city is refusing to pay. So I lost 4500.00 in backpack plus whatever hourly shortage is due. Still waiting. If we do get paid there's interest on that settlement, would have been cheaper to just pay. Business doesn't kick the can down the road but these democrats sure do. How many mayor's ago did they cheat us ? Surprisingly they always find instant millions for criminals shot by the popo.
