Seems Like a Great Idea!

We're being sarcastic:

  • The maximum age for a starting Chicago police officer or firefighter would rise from 40 to 55 under a controversial proposal to bolster hiring that was dismissed by union leaders as impractical.

Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th), chair of the City’s Council’s Committee on Economic and Capital Development, acknowledged that policing and firefighting are, for the most part, a young person’s game.

But in pushing the proposal, he argues there are still plenty of jobs, particularly in policing, that could be performed by rookies in their 50s.

Seriously?

  • “When you talk about Lollapalooza, you’re not dealing with gangbangers and drug dealers,” Villegas said. “There’ll be occasional fights that break out, but it’s not like you’re going into a gang-infested area or trying to break up a drug deal.”

“Crowds go there to have fun. Alcohol can be the fuel that starts something,” Villegas added. “But controlling rowdy crowds is something definitely a senior police officer could handle. That would allow younger police officers to get into these busy districts where crime is occurring and handle those.”

And a young, twenty-something (fueled by alcohol and assorted designer drugs) running up against a senior citizen (with all the usual wear-and-tear on an old body) is a recipe for disaster.

Not to mention that the kids will have a bunch more seniority on the seniors and therefore, will be bidding off the undesirable watches and out of the crappy districts far quicker than a senior citizen will be able to.

This is just dumb.

Maybe hire senior citizens for the house mouse jobs and get able-bodied armed secretaries out on the street for the jobs they were hired to do?

Hahaha. But I’m 51 years old.. I go to bed at 10pm and I need to work days.. sorry old man, you’ve got a year on, you’re on midnights and that 28 year old kid with 5 years on gets afternoons because of something called seniority. These people live in an alternate universe.

I entered the Academy in the late Nineties, before there was an age limit. There were cadets in their mid fifties in my class. I’m not sure how some of them managed to pass the physical qualifications – even with the age adjustment - but I’m pretty sure those in charge let certain things slide. And why would the city want to spend all that money training a 55-year-old when they only can work 10 years, then would have to retire at 65? Or would they change the mandatory retirement age as well? Dumb idea all around.

They did it in the 90s. In all honesty, they don’t want police doing anything like physically defending themselves or chasing on foot, so it’s no different than them hiring hundreds of 5 foot tall, 100 pound females. It all works out great until you actually do need police to physically defend themselves or chase someone on foot.

So they’re going to give older cops without seniority priority spots? Ageism goes both ways.

There’s guys on the job in their mid 40s early 50s who are more fit than some of these obese midgets that are currently on the street now. Have one standard fitness test no matter the age, whoever can pass it, gets the job. Why’s it have to be so complicated?

You know. There’s no age limits to be hired as a CFD paramedic. Also silly as that’s the hardest physically most demanding job in the city. Recently they hired a 59/female. They called for an Ambo once a week while she was in the academy they pushed her through then she was assigned to a busy Ambo on the southeast side and she did a few shifts now she’s on the medical indefinitely.
Gee. What can possibly go wrong?

And this is why the feds have a mandatory retirement age of 57. Hell I first started feeling it at 38 when I was being outrun by a young street doper...and I worked out and jogged regularly.

The statements made by Ald Villegas are delusional to say the least. He needs to view some of the videos posted here and on other numerous sites where it might take 5 young strong coppers to bring one thug to the ground and then struggle to handcuff him. We are finding out more and more politicians are incompetent and have no common sense. We need testing for these people prior to them filing to be a candidate for any public office. Chicago, Cook County and Illinois politicians are by far the biggest disgrace in the nation.

I think it’s a great idea.

But at 55 I retired from CPD. I was tired of the BS of the Department. The lack of support from the City. The fact media always state police shot and killed a subject that allegedly had a gun? The media refuses to identify any offenders even if they are on video committing the crime? The facts the city wasted its money paying for immigrants. And now needs to find money just to keep the lights on? Now hire a 55 year old. And see how much productivity they bring to the table? Or how much time they spend on the medical?

Hire a 55 year old to be the police is just an insane joke. But look who has this bright idea……and you can see why it’s a joke!

start hiring retired Officers at 35.00 an hour to work all the inside jobs in Districts and the golden tower. No benefits at all (no sick days, vacation, insurance nothing). Only allowed to work 24 hours max a week ( no overtime)
You could put 3000 more police on the street. Save the taxpayer by avoiding training for an office job.

But he hit the age limit about halfway through the field training and was mandatory retired. The city had to hire him because he was qualified until he was no longer qualified.

Let me figure out this math:
54 and 32….
So you stuck around for what?
55 for the medical, so you missed out on that. You could have walked at 51/52 when you maxed out, since you didn’t want the medical.
Unless the wife’s medical just became great, or you were making awesome OT.

The city is better off getting rid of the college requirement for Police Officer job!

You do NOT need a college degree to write tickets!

In the early 1990's all you needed was a high school diploma and the talent pool was much better than it is today and we all are retiring now!
