Skynet Laughs

Big Brother is always watching:

  • In a sign of things to come as law enforcement tools evolve with the times, a Chicago police drone team is being credited with tracking down a man who allegedly fired shots outside Soldier Field this month.

It happened just after 5 p.m. on September 14 when police received reports of gunfire near 18th Street and Lake Shore Drive, according to a CPD report. Officers responded in patrol cars, as they always do. But this time they had a little high-tech backup: a police drone unit was patrolling the area from above.

As officers searching the area heard more shots fired, the drone operators reported seeing a man holding a gun on the west side of Soldier Field, the report said.

So how long have they been operating? What are the limitations on pursuits? What is the range of the drone? Or drones?

And most importantly, what are the qualifications and necessary phone calls to get assigned to the Drone Unit?

An FAA Part 107 pilot's license. If you have to ask about the phone call, you ain't got it, Kid.

Believe it or not the county has been using drones for a year or 2. They actually wrote up the policies for drone usage and cpd copied it word for word. Also heard unofficially they trained our guys before the city could get anything up and going

Police Technicians were drone trained (and had to get tested and licensed through the FAA). Good spot. Look up the NOJOs. Good gig. Used to be better, though.

Don’t transfer to the Drone Unit, it will soon be declared racist and defunded and disbanded. Also you have to pass the FAA test which is quite tough….no merit would be able to pass it.

To get assigned to the drone unit you need your FAA license “to operate a small single rotary aircraft” (I believe) then get selected to that unit if you meet the qualifications. If I’m incorrect on anything I know you at least need your FAA license

To get into the drone unit is simple. Just call your auntie, Yolanda Tally. She can make the moves while Snelling is on vacation.

It’s just like the rest of the DEI hires and promotions. And they need more on the top. Just so they can watch the budget dry up. And they all find new jobs at other departments.

In answer to your questions... The limitations are the drone has to be operated within lint-of-sight by the pilot in command ("PIC"), and the PIC must have a FAA 107 commercial drone pilot license. It's not hard or expensive, but you have to study. Check out Pilot Institute, they have a great course.

A few years back there was a class and a very difficult test. Had to be able to read flight maps and crap. Not too many passed and the class was very expensive. Several hand picked people got the class invitation. Almost everyone was from Homan. Then word got out that there wasn't a official job notice. I laughed and went back to watching Netflix. More of the same !

Don't get me started in this topic. FAA Part 107 License is a must but as you know we don't follow that. It's not what you know it's pretty much who you know . . . . whether you know the Capt, Cmdr, DC, Chief . . . . . etc. . . . even the Sgt who has been running it for a couple of years is not Part 107 license . . . . so don't even ask. And guess what, credit went to the people who never was involved during the infancy and the hard work of the people who started this didn't get nothing . . . . not even a good job nor thank you. But the people who is running it now took all the credit. Shame on you. The department spend so much money, time and effort in training and planning the Drone Pilot and Visual Observers way back. All were certified from PO's to Supervisors, but none of them was choosen for the position because of WYK (Who You Know). Traffic specialist and ET were also trained for crime scene and guess what, they in limbo. Only SWAT survived bec that's the Capt and DC's pet and rest was axed. Typical Chicago Police Department. These two and the whole drone unit of the present are even clueless on how, what, where and why the Drone unit was started. The design and the Mission of the drone unit for the whole department.

Swat sent a few guys to get pilots licenses to be able to fly drones, then Carter said those licenses don't count and got his guys to get licenses so his guys could be the drone guys. But getting a pilots license is work and lot of studying, so his guys all bailed or failed. So now another group from homan is the drone unit, different boss brought in his guys. But his guys could pass the test ar least.

FAA Part 107 license, or, if you already have a pilot license (private or commercial), you just need to be current (last 24 months) and complete the FAA’s online training course called “Part 017 Small Unmanned Aircraft.” After it’s completed upload the certificate to IACRA and now you don’t have to take the Part 107 exam.

9/27/2025 03:51:00 PM

Fixed Wing Private and Commercial Pilots just need to take the Part 107 online training course for small unmanned aircraft. So if you don’t want to pay for helicopter lessons, this is a much cheaper (and faster) alternative.

Been flying drones from the start (DJI) amazing machines especially the more expensive ones, that being said the fcking FAA is always making drones more illegal to fly every year. Been telling the department for yrs that we don't need helicopters any more because the drones can do their job and more. Drones are easy to fly believe me, it's the red tape that's hard to get a license. And yes I have it. But like all the commentators been saying "It's who you blow on this department" for that reason I'm still in a beat car, not a bad thing either. Gonna retire pretty soon and to tell you guys the truth, I would do it all over again. Best people I had the pleasure of working with in my 30 plus years. God bless guys.
