I did a legislative audit (non-financial) of elementary classes of a major southern metro school system notorious for being caught falsifying student scores wholesale to make the staff look better. The illiteracy I ran into among the teachers was appalling. The teachers cared very much for their kids but they were crippling them with their ignorance. Can't read at the third grade level? Because the reading material is in a foreign language - syntax aint rite.

Several years ago there was an article in the paper that the average SAT scores of suburban high school students was significantly higher than the average SAT scores of Chicago Public School teachers. This sign is proof this is still true.

A friend of mine who used to be a sub at a CPS school was instructed to pass kids who got "close" with spelling. That spelling words phonetically was perfectly acceptable. The billboard is "close" enough, according to their standards. LOL!!! Oh my, what a joke this place is...completing a crossword puzzle is definitely out of the question for the phonetically passed students.
I thank my parents for sending me to private schools, we weren't rich but they made it happen on one source of income and NO welfare.

Some years ago, the Village of Thornton, IL posted signs telling truckers "No Engine Breaking". Took a few weeks for the signs to be noticed and changed to "Braking".

This can NOT be real. After all, this is a Chicago Public High School. An institution of higher learning. A place where future mayors are developed.
That's a fine response for an internet comment, or a facebook post or some such thing. But that is a school, and the whole point is to teach the kids. The fact that they model terrible language IS a problem. Don't try to misdirect. Also, people can walk and chew gum at the same time and two things can be wrong at the same time. It's not an either-or.
Too bad this isnt a case of we get what we pay for. Overpaid morons.

When you occupy your efforts with picking nits, such as the spelling of words and the grammer of a single language, amongst an ocean of languages, you waste your time being perceived as a nitpicking ass pimple scold.
1. The indoctrinators just relish your pettiness.
2. YOU are the distraction, misdirection and side show clown they love you to be.
3. It's not the way that they fail to teach the three RRR's that is their source of perfidty. It's the way they fleece the taxpayers and pay thrmselves for doing so.

You're right, syntax is just a gov't grab. Although, it's preferred that most things brake as opposed to breaking during winter weather.
I worked with one of the companies that publishes and scores those state standardized tests. Normally, they only hired teachers who were on summer break, but I was hired because they couldn't find enough teachers who could pass their pre-interview exam (which was a condensed version of the 10th grade reading and math test).
And yet, to understand the joke, you have to understand the spelling errors.
Source of all? languages is first spoken, sounds in sequences of consonants and vowels.
Then, for many languages, it's visual symbols, aka alphabets, aka letters, specified to be sequenced as correct spellings.
Both established as a means of communicatings between one person and another, other then a sharp slap on the back of another's noggin.
Barking dogs, meowing cats, chirping birds, hissing possums, howling wolves, snarling cougars, even of the human female kind, etc., all have communicating value, yet are limited in the complexity of what is desired to be communicated.
To recognize an error in spelling is still to understand the meaning of the composer of same.
