Look Conehead - Money!
Over half of Chicago Public Schools are underutilized, but the 10 emptiest schools cost nearly double per student the district average.
At least 255 school buildings are underutilized, according to recent data from CPS for the current 2025-2026 school year. That means those schools’ enrollments decreased below 70% of their ideal capacity and “classroom spaces are unused and/or inefficiently programmed.”
Empty schools mean high costs.
And Illinois Policy helpfully includes a table showing the most obvious places to make cuts:
The savings based simply on per-student spending at these ten schools?
- just over $36 million
We don't know exactly what the per-student totals include (salaries of teachers and staff, running the physical building itself, maintenance and upkeep, capital improvements) but that $36 million is obviously on the low side. Stretch it out over a five-or-ten-year span and the savings really start to add up.
But expecting a democrat not to raise taxes might be a bridge too far.

These schools were built for at least 1000 students each. Yet the city keeps building new schools, or renting closed Catholic schools. Show me the Money.
not fenger! omg! wont someone think of the basketball?! omg! save da communitie! Governer porkulus, you all our hope!
lol
And with crime going down so much, they can't argue that kids would have to cross through rival gang territories. Since we all get along so well and can harmonize kumbaya.
Total over 100+million, the cps needs a federal forensic examination. Now February 1st president Trumps cutting all federal funding to sanctuary cities including chiraq and the state of Illinois due to prioritizing illegals over citizens, the criminals are honored the taxpayers are thrown out of the window! Translates more taxes, so the democrats can keep their destruction and vote buying movement!
After reading about some out of town board up service cashing in. The scool building to be secured when closed will cost twice as much. That's the chicago way. Arson would be cheaper..
Close the buildings
Lay off the personnel
Vote Republican
Repeat
How many teachers have been reassigned from these barren institutions? Any??
Also look at the chronic student absentee rate especially at the high school level.
Stacy Davis-Gates will never allow the closing of any schools. Recall how Rahm was blasted for his attempt. The public sector unions run this state ( with the exception of public safety unions that is ). The people should rise up and demand the state laws be changed to ban political contributions by public sector unions and ban strikes by all public sector unions. Arbitration for all.
but with less and less students the cps will then brag about having a higher graduating percentage of kids (that still can't read their diploma)
Democrats only know how to impose taxes and fee's. It's in their DNA.
Chilruns were bussed to Taft and local elementary schools since mid 90’s. I didn’t like it one bit.
$54,000 a student, he or she must be really smart.
How about this, close the schools that are not anywhere near student enrolment maximum capacity and move students to another school and combine with other schools to maximize use of property. Than sell that closed school for fair market value, and do this through the entire school system. Do the same with teachers, and if too many teachers , fire those not needed.
And how many of those students go to Taft, instead of their local high school?
27 students in the whole HS???? Back in the day, that was a classroom. It would be interesting to see their reading, writing, arithmetic percentage. I mean, that's like an entire school for individual learning. 13 teachers, and 6 security officers. Plus a scattered few support staff.
(I might have been wrong about the teacher numbers) I was looking at the wrong school. Sorry.
Consolidate. Consolidate. Consolidate.
Wait, Wait, wasnt it too long ago that the teachers were begging for more days off so they can get more time to put their classroom itinerary together and saying that their classrooms are to crowded??? Now we see this breakdown of how schools are practically empty...WTF???
you can move all the students to Tilden, close the rest and still have room for 500 more at Tilden
wow,,, with all those kids in the school I sure hope the teachers get a time out room
Reassigned teachers aka Golden Ticket Winners!!!
Several CPS teachers that are removed from their positions for one reason or another then become reassigned teachers. These reassigned teachers float from school-to-school throughout the school year, many of assigned to one school for the school year, and they're all paid regular teacher pay along with medical/pension benefits. (Think a salary of $115K+ with most havening 7% of their own 9% pension contributions picked up by CPS)
This is where the Golden Ticket winner part comes in as these reassign teachers will then work as regular substitute teachers with no lesson plans or grading until they're hired full-time at a CPS school.
Here's the rub.....These Golden Ticket Winners never get rehired and while they interview a few times month at different schools, they'll never be hired because they make too much money.
Currently, there's 50-75 Golden Ticket Winners subbing throughout CPS with many of them have been doing this for over 13+ years. Many of these GTs were cut from their teaching positions at Lincoln Park HS, Clemente HS, Senn, and Morgan Park HS when Rahm wanted high schools to be Wall-to-Wall International Baccalaureate (IB).
Principals like current Network Chief Michael Boraz (Lincoln Park) said yessir boss man and started cutting teachers they thought didn't have their IB teacher certifications, problem is they had them. This led to a huge lawsuit and these teachers that were cut landed their Golden Tickets for seemingly life as a settlement.
They were born speaking Latin.
Close the underutilized schools, lay off some of the teachers from said schools. Move some of the teachers from the underutilized schools as assistants and after school teachers. Win win! The city will save many millions of dollars. Those barely staffed/attended schools are basically cafeterias in food deserts.
Conehead and the CTU care nothing about the students in the under enrolled schools. This is simply a jobs program for the CTU.
Schools will such low numbers can’t offer advanced math, world language, sciences, orchestra, band, and AP classes for a handful of students.
This is educational neglect on the part of the CTU and Conehead.
DEFUND AND DISBAND CPS!
A lot of 399 guys sitting around those schools dong nothing !
Just imagine how strong Chicago would be financially without CPS and the CTU. They are the 100 ton anchor dragging Chicago to the bottom.
Where’s the newspaper coverage of these wasted spaces? No TV exposes? Why doesn’t Cheryl (Lindbloom graduate) Burton report on this scandal?

Simple math for simpletons.
Poor administration
Poor teachers
Poor results
But keep the money flowing down the drain
Sometimes I wish I had joined 399
Where is the lapdog media and their half-assed investigative reporters. Oh yes, I forgot, they are kissing the assess of the Democrats Socialist and fondling the CTU. No worries, it's all good.
