Park with the Engine Off?

Is this true?

  • OT. We were told in roll call today to be mindful of how much gas we’re using. It were stopped we should turn the engine off. WTF.

At least it's been nice weather - could you imagine if it was below freezing and they wanted you to park with the engine off? Or 100 degrees like out west this weekend.

Maybe it's time to adopt the CFD model and park at the station until a call comes in.

Is Conehead having money problems?

UPDATE: How many cars on Conehead's detail?

  • 150 cops across three watches - call it +/- fifty per watch
  • days off, furlos, etc - that's twenty two-man cars plus at least one supervisor, probably two

So Conehead has twenty-plus cars burning gas 24/7 plus the two armored vehicles which are constantly kept running in case Conehead needs to leave in a hurry.

Years ago when we would answer calls and park the squad, we were supposed to turn off the radio along with the car. At that time it took a few minutes for the radio to warm up enough to use it after starting the car. I can't remember anyone ever obeying this insane order.

Omg! All of the green initiatives and all of the climate change democrat led stuff. But yet the Democrat mecca of chicago dept buys cars with the ability for cars to run without the keys. I'm a little older, but I'll walk by running cars in the lot and wave hello but no one is inside. These cars are running and unoccupied for hours. But with the manpower shortfalls there are like 15 other squad cars not being used at all so I'm sure it evens out economically. Not counting more crime, deaths etc. I get it if they were diesel but a 4 cylinder heats up pretty quick. I agree we should all limit fuel consumption to help the cause with the war but they bought those enabled vehicles. The weather is getting better maybe they will make us use some of those fancy bike lanes.

The bosses are idiots. We were trained to always leave the engine running for safety. This gives you the option to move if something unexpected happens. ALA an attack on you sitting in your patrol vehicle. This is basic police tactics. The bosses who came up with this is going to get someone killed.

In the 80's, in 002, we had a few cars that had a thing called "Thermal something or other" that would recirculate the hot water from the engine through the heater core when the engine was off. It did it for about 15 minutes until the water wasn't hot anymore. Problem was, cars were in such shit shape, it would run the battery down and car wouldn't start. So on to CW3 for R service. Used it once, learned my lesson.

Comment from an old timer. Back in the early 80' we had a device in out squad called "AutoTherm". Shut the engine off and turn the switch on. What it did is circulate coolant thru the system and ran the heater fan. Actually the city found something that did work. You may get about 30 minutes of heat. In the summer the air stayed on if it worked.

How about just shut off the engines & stop creating unnecessary air pollution & not waste the gas!
Idling engines are inefficient, overheat & also wear out the engines faster.
So, exactly why waste the gas & why doesn't the city buy plug in electric police vehicles, they don't cover that much mileage every day & could recharge when not in use.
I'd far rather see the city spend more to have to buy extra vehicles due to recharging time, than waste fuel & create pollution!

I’m just trying to figure out why someone would leave a car running for several hours when they are in the station. No, wait, no figuring necessary. Cops will do asshole stuff just because they can, not because it makes any sense. And then they brag about their own stupidity – acting as if they got one over on someone. And then tell stories about it later at the bar. Childish behavior runs rampant here.
