Cicero Cops Injured
A four-vehicle crash during an early morning police chase in Chicago's west suburbs left five people injured, including two officers.
The crash happened around 4:49 a.m. Monday at Roosevelt Road and Cicero Avenue in Cicero, according to town officials.
"We along with other municipalities have had issues with gaming café burglaries in the early morning hours," said Cicero Police Superintendent Thomas Boyle. "That morning our department was looking for those individuals committing that type of offenses."
The police clipped the back end of a turning semi. They should be okay after some time recovering.
But this piqued our curiosity:
As officers approached, the driver fled, jumping a curb and heading north on Cicero Avenue. Police then tried to catch up to deploy a tracking device.
"They then attempted to get behind the vehicle to place a tracker called StarChase, and in the course of that, the collision occurred," Boyle said.
We had seen this a while back but didn't realize it was in service anywhere locally. Here's the link to the company. It looks like a GPS tracker embedded in a big sticky ball of snot that's launched at a suspect vehicle and broadcasts its location. When does CPD get to pilot this?
Next step - an embedded Taser-type device that fries in-car electronics, eliminating all pursuits?

North riverside police has had it for around a year. Works great.
Lots of south suburban departments have those especially in DuPage. Its basically replaced the spike strips. Also some departments in DuPage have a netting device to stop the vehicle by hooking onto its axels
Wished I'd kept the FAX message on the look-out for the lost tracking device belonging to OCD, last seen on the South side. All I thought was, only this Dept. could lose the thing that cannot be lost. Wonder if it ever showed up with a good excuse.
The question: Will the LEOs draw a court(s) that rules the tracking device as an acceptable exigency to 4th Amendment warrant requirement, or not.
Cicero PD a lot of good proactive officers and units, if you want to be a cop not in Chicago but want to go to a suburb where you will have action, get to work, but also be supported by command staff it’s Cicero.
It doesn't work well. It doesn't adhere well in cold weather or if there is ice, snow or moisture on the vehicle. That's the main complaint from several agencies that are using it.
I would rather see an embedded Taser-type device that fries in-car occupants, eliminating all pursuits? But thats just me!
Very true.
Need a couple of Tesla's that can have that stuff equipped onto them ! No regular vehicle on the street can match the acceleration the Tesla has ! You can be right on another vehicles ass and deploy it super quick !
Last I heard of star chasers was in the early 2000’s. They were plenty at the local watering holes…..
If you’re looking for toys for your law enforcement arsenal Oak Brook pretty much has everything and they chase EVERYTHING. GPS, Tire Grappler, small Stop Sticks, big Stop Sticks, drone responds to calls from the PD, Dodge Hellcat Chargers,Tac/det squad, and a seemingly never ending ability to intercept bad guys on local highway. 60 chases a year keep’s the skill set up, if you could do it over again it seems fun, as long as they do not hang you out to dry when one goes to shit.
I have heard Oak Brook and surprisingly Country Club Hills mention their use of it during ISPERN broadcasts from them
What’s wrong with one that explodes.

That's a high-speed police chase. Can't do it to box in, force over, and felony stop - but same speeds, same risks involved to stick some kind of electronic chewing gum on the back of susp veh.
?
Dearly-departed Ithaca made a great 10 ga 3 1/2" shotgun - the Ithaca Roadblocker.
Chase coming towards state line. Squads across road w/red/blues activated, spikes in place, lights aimed to blind driver, and a couple ofc behind cover with these.
Made a point - whatever this is, it ends right here.
That company did a demo for Chicago about 7 or 8 years ago.
