Not Cool

  • If you've harbored fantasies of throwing a pie at a policeman or policewoman's face, or just think it would be a fun activity, Tuesday night is your night.

As part of the the community-focused National Night Out, the Shakespeare Police District will host a pie toss with all suggested donations for each toss ($1) or full on smash ($5) going to the Police Memorial Foundation.

The "pie the police" fundraiser is one of several activities planned for the family-friendly event, scheduled for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the station, 2150 N. California Ave. in Logan Square.
We're all for fun, families and laughter, but was this really a good idea? People are throwing all sorts of crap at police - verbally and physically already. Why even encourage this sort of behavior and pass it off as "fun"? And using this set-up?

Nothing like playing into the stereotypes - something like a dunk tank would have been far better.

Pretty lame. I remember my grandfather telling me that back in the day, when they had their version of 'Night Out,' (I forgot what the hell he said they called it back then) former boxing middleweight champion Tony Zale was brought in to show fights on a film projector of his classic bouts with Rocky Graziano.

No wonder these tykes grow up to be entitled pussies. Instead of throwing crap at us, they should be learning how to brawl and punching each other in the face! In all seriousness, whomever came up with this is a dipshit and a real asshole. Doesn't surprise me the brain trust of 014 approved this poor taste in judgement. I still remember how bad that district sucked and blowed to work in when little Maria was the commander, running around and yelling like a spazz for petty nonsense.

Or a brilliant idea; figures of a mayor, alderpersons, judges with money oozing out of their pockets. In fact all left wing loons that disparage the police. Of course all unidentified!!!!!!! This is embarrassing.

Skokie' s Night Out featured a dunk tank with their command staff taking turns in full uniform minus their equipment belt. One Commander was wearing a snorkel and mask. A lot of good natured comments from blue shirts and the public. When i remarked that you'd never see CPD white shirts in the tank, one citizen quipped that the Supt. would not fit. A fun event without demeaning activities such as throwing a pie at a cut out photo showing a uniformed officer eating a doughnut. It also drew a capacity crowd with plenty of kids having fun. Good job SPD.

Disclaimer: I am not a cop, but have been a citizen volunteer in 14 for many years. Have helped at many NNOs with multiple staffs. We've done the dunk tank for the last several years....I guess organizers wanted to try something new. No harm was done and it was pretty popular...and all funds raised were for the Police Memorial fund (we made a decent amount!). Come on, it was funny and people enjoyed the whip cream "pies" they got to throw. Sometimes you just got to Poke fun at yourself and laugh...the Chief Wigam from the Simpsons is a cartoon! Don't be so sensitive! Now if you look at the "donut" stereotype...how is the Dunkin Donuts Fundraiset any different -- again cops & donuts. A dunk tank....cops are still getting stuff thrown at them and getting dunked.....not a huge difference in "for fun" atmosphere. Give them a break....they worked long and hard putting NNO together (like every district does) for a night out of fun and frivolity with the community. Enjoy your day Officers....may you have a safe and "quiet" one.

The depth of democrat desperation to find money to pay salaries and pension program payments is incredible.

People will just go to the next county to buy beverages. Problem solved (for the consumers, but not for the Democrats)

Also, the drinks at Starbucks are not going to be taxed, like the Frappacino?? Why not?

Wait, I know - how about a special penny per ounce Coffee & Tea tax? Might as well tax everything in a cup.

There was absolutely nothing malicious about the event. Everyone involved had a blast and raised a nice amount of money for the memorial fund. Half a dozen officers, a sargeant, a lieutenant and an alderman all took one for the team for a good cause. The concern is viable but the way it was presented created a fun, funny and family atmosphere. There was nothing about a coppers two year old throwing a styro foam plate of whipped cream at her father that gave cause for any alarm or disrespect. It was obviously done as a cartoon to create a comedic and lighthearted character rather than have any relation to a real officer. Are we so sensitive that we can't handle a Simpsons character holding a coffee cup and a donut? I guess we better pull the plug on the three stooges and Wiley coyote. To "There was absolutely nothing malicious about the event"

Was the two year old the one that came up with this idea? Any officer that thought I'd be funny to have officers stand behind this image and get a pie in the face is about as smart. I don't think that two year old quite understands this on any other level than 'daddy looks funny now with that stuff on his face' but then again the person that came up with this is probably not much smarter.

Next year they'll have a new attraction taken from the movie Idiocracy where the public can kick a cop in the groin. It'll raise even more money I'll bet. Ow, my balls!!

And I've got one more too!! We can have a bunch of people stand around holding iPhones and then have an Amish youth run through this group of people and punch as many as they can and grab as many phones as they can in one minute. It'll be fun to watch.

Talk about overreacting. All of you really need to relax. Do you honestly think taking a pie in the face is such a disgrace? In the current climate, clean fun is the last thing we need to worry about. Moreover the fucking animals we do need to worry about wouldn't show up to a function like National Night Out anyway. For the most part, the people that show up like and support the police. So quit making asenine comments about how this is such a bad thing, telling others that respect for the police should be reestablished, all the while talking shit about the police officers who participated. Talk about irony, kinda funny how coppers get on this blog to demand respect for police and then talk shit about the same police officers they demanded respect for. Oh and I heard the FOP demanded that all police officers who participated should do so without the uniform. The FOP needs to worry about more prevalent problems, like defending police officers wrongly accused and our next contract. They should right the ship over there before worrying about a police officer getting a pie in the face. Unbelievable.

Judging by your post, you work there. Since you don't have to deal with the southside or westside you shouldn't even comment on this. There is a reason why we are upset at this. However, you sound like you never will understand, so go back to the caps office or the watch secretary spot in the comfort of your cushy district. Asshat.

Retired cops in Michigan took over a failing bakery. Renamed it "Cops and Donuts." No stereotype there, eh? The idea and business model took off and others have now opened.

Someone should bring back the old " dunk tank" that was at Riverview decades ago. Have the mayor or superintendent sit on the seat in the cage over the tank filled with water. People pay to throw baseballs at the target. If they hit the target the seat collapses and the person on the seat gets a bath. Now that would bring in a lot of money.

yes anyone who thinks this was a good idea is an asshat. But, off topic, I spent my career on the south and west sides with a brief detail to a good northside district ( yes I was a lieutenant). Working on the south or west sides not only shortens your career but effects your mental and physical health in ways that will manifest itself in your later years. That is if you have any later years. The Northside is a vastly different police department from the rest of CPD, in every way that you can imagine.

We understand that those who weren't there could get the wrong impression. We sincerely apologize to those who were offended by our fund raising event. It was never our intention to denigrate the uniform or the noble profession we have all chosen.

Pie throwing fundraisers are going around the country much like the ice bucket challenge did before. Since the dunk tank injured a number of officers and was expensive to rent, we thought this would be a fun, creative alternative. Most of the pies were thrown by the friends/family/spouse or children of the receiver. No gangbangers or dirtbags were involved. We had police family/friends and decent members of the community.

An rdo Lieutenant, a Sergeant, a dozen officers and even an Alderman volunteered. We used the image of a cartoon character and wanted to use a second cutout of Mayor Quimby to have politicians volunteer, but ran out of time.
Everyone who participated had a good time and took great pictures with their families.

It was all in good fun, raised a lot of money for charity, strengthened our relationship with the community, gave our friends & families a laugh and showed that even in these trying times we are still good hearted and can take a joke. We apologize once again to any who were offended. God Bless and Stay Safe !!

Disclaimer: I am not a cop, but have been a citizen volunteer in 14 for many years. Have helped at many NNOs with multiple staffs. We've done the dunk tank for the last several years......A dunk tank....cops are still getting stuff thrown at them and getting dunked.....not a huge difference in "for fun" atmosphere. Give them a break....they worked long and hard putting NNO together (like every district does) for a night out of fun and frivolity with the community. Enjoy your day Officers....may you have a safe and "quiet" one.

8/02/2017 07:36:00 AM

You can justify it all day long, but it is still wrong. They should have stuck with the dunk tank. The caricature supported the stereotype and the act of throwing a pie into the face of a living human is simulated violence, not fun and frivolity. And, to be promoted by a police agency is such a contradiction.

Also, if all was so innocent, why wasn't the caricature of a black officer? Or, an Asian officer? Or, an elderly person? Or, of a robber? Or, of a burglar? Or, of any arrestee? The answers are obvious. Violence against any or all of them is not acceptable and a caricature of them would be highly insulting. The answer should have been just as obvious about using the caricature that was used for the event.

What does National Night Out have to do with a dunk tank or hitting an officer with a pie? I cannot see any correlation. It's supposed to be against crime, not the police. Garfield Ridge honored First Responders on night out. I thought this was what neighborhoods did, turn on your lights and show a little appreciation for their officers. When did Night against crime turn into "Night to humiliate police". To all of you who say this is OK, you are part of the problem!

For you that don't know Chief Wiggum on the Simpson's and those that say it's just a Simpson's character holding a cup of coffee. Here's the character, "As "a conscious pun", Wiggum was designed to look like a pig." "The character's comedic value relies heavily on his incompetence and irresponsibility as a police officer, and his laziness and gluttony". This is all part of the anti-police, liberal movement. People do not see this! How cold anyone (police or civilian) with half a brain, say this is not offensive?

Law enforcement functions around respect. When police officers and the public interact, it is usually because something unpleasant has happened: a crime or a bad accident/injury. Tempers and emotions are often high, stress is a factor, so is fear, depending on what is happening. Both parties, the LEO and the civilian MUST show respect when interacting in these types of situations, otherwise somebody might get hurt, possibly even killed.

Sorry, but you don't respect somebody you're throwing pies at.

Respect and a bit of fear of authority helps keep people in line, and prevents a lot of shit before it even gets started, which keeps all of us safer. Letting people throw pies at a stereotypical cop is stupid: it undermines authority, and the pricetag for that is something none of us can afford.

having a caricature of an overweight police officer holding a donut and a cup of coffee with the intention of letting people throw pies or any object at an actual police officer's face, is disgusting and a downright shame. Who ever thought this up should be......? This never should have been allowed at any official police function. But, I am not surprised that police officers assigned to front office or community service groups would go along with this. They love those day jobs that are safe and will do anything to keep them.
