Reforming Duty Disability

Over at The Contrarian, addressing an issue that should have been solved long ago.

  • When COVID-19 struck the globe, the pandemic forced Chicago to dramatically curtail our way of life. As Chicago residents learned to cope with a daily existence transformed by the pandemic — orienting to draconian lockdowns, mask mandates, and school closures — countless city employees were obligated to continue with their duties.

While residents were forced to capitulate to the extreme measures imposed by Chicago’s health gurus, members of the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department had no choice but to work and accept the prospect contracting COVID was just another ordinary hazard of daily duties.

A terrible period to be on the streets, by the time Chicago emerged from the pandemic’s darkest days, 14 members of CFD and CPD were acknowledged to have succumbed to COVID in the line of duty. In each instance, the families of the 14 deceased were eligible for death benefits. Yet the fate of several CFD and CPD who prevailed but were debilitated by the virus became a source of controversy.

Of those officers and firefighters who did manage to overcome COVID, the predicament of Sergeant of Police Joaquin Mendoza was distinct. A 22-year veteran of CPD who had established an impeccable record as a peace officer, Mendoza’s case of COVID had taken such a toll he had to be rescued by CFD after he collapsed at his South Side apartment. Ravaged by the illness, Mendoza eventually spent 72 days in the hospital battling the virus and endured kidney failure, lost the use of his left arm, and suffered a series of strokes.

The state and federal governments had already declared COVID related disabilities to be "line of duty," but this was ignored by the Pension Board, and Groot's people voted 4-3 to deny benefits.

Fortunately for Sgt Mendoza, he had a big name in his corner - Comptroller Suzanne Mendoza, who roasted Groot for her political bull$hit and went to Springfield to push through one segment of needed reform. This is why we supported her for mayor back then. We even had a lawn sign.

The process still takes far too long, placing Officers in real jeopardy of losing insurance benefits, doctors care, untold financial burdens, even their housing, because of senseless bureaucratic red tape. The Contrarian outlines a bunch of common sense reforms that would shorten waiting times and streamline decisions to less these dangers without affecting oversight.

Go read it all.

The disability benefit worked when men with consciences went back to work nursing booboos.
Now many officers are exaggerating their injuries and are living wonderful glowed up lives milking the system.

The pension board needs to stop the scammers because the medical section has failed with its nonexistent integrity unit.

wait a sec...which is it? COVID was bullshit, it's just the flu, nothing to see here, move along, don't try to make me get vaccinated, because vaccines are also bullshit, waaah, not gonna comply, you can't make me....OR Long Covid is a thing, and we need to have compensation for those affected. WHICH IS IT? YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS.

" the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Fire Department had no choice but to work and accept the prospect contracting COVID was just another ordinary hazard of daily duties"

Interesting.
There were many others in the same spot ...
Our son a school teacher out in the cornfields of mid-state Illinois missed one day of in-school teaching, the school was closed to rearrange the classrooms spreading out the desks.
They had a voluntary system, anyone pregnant or with weak immune system or... could teach online classes. He said that only the pregnant and a few elderly stayed away. No mandate from on high.
He said if the schools were closed who would be with the students? Most of the parents work and, like the PD/Fire, felt an obligation to the community.
In his high school, the principal is paid just over $100K.
The average HS teacher in the DuPage district near my bunker is OVER $100K and has been for years.

This will be a tough nut to crack in the big city, sadly the crap still runs downhill onto the little guys.

It's clear that Ro is dedicated and passionate about advocating for disabled officers and making significant changes in the pension system. Her consistent attendance at meetings shows her commitment to the cause, and her willingness to challenge the status quo is commendable. This election is crucial—not only for the future of the pension fund but also for ensuring that all officers are treated fairly and with respect.

Your vote is powerful. By supporting candidates like Ro, who are not entrenched in the old networks and who prioritize transparency and accountability, you can help bring about the change that’s desperately needed. Remember, voting is not just a right; it’s a responsibility. If you want to see a different outcome, it’s time to make a different choice. Don’t let the status quo continue—cast your vote wisely in both the pension board elections and the presidential election this November. Every vote counts, and together we can create a better future for all officers.

Susanna Mendoza DOES NOT SUPPORT THE POLICE.

She supports her brother who is a police officer.

I met with her in her office and asked her to publicly state as an elected official to fully fund our pension. She gave me a word salad response. I have done this with various so called "pro police politicians"- Napalotino, Talafero, Sposato, Tabares, Lopez, etc.... A politician is loyal to their party bosses and to their bank account.

Terrible argument “ if not X then y” it can be both. The problem with the vax is that it was pushed out too soon and the side effects were just as dangerous as Covid. Literally a year after the pandemic people were forced to get a vaccine they knew little about. If you don’t see the problem with that, you’re probably just a smooth brain idiot.

Hey ass- if you’re a cop, then you worked over a year without a vaccine. By the time the non-working vaccine was “mandated” many of us had Covid, some of had it multiple times. For most of us it was anything from n asymptomatic to a bad flu, but those that got it bad or died - did so prior to the useless vaccine. Many of us got the vaccine, despite having Covid, because we had personal reasons to not be tied up by the city & guess what we still got it afterwards too.

Silly rant. Of course covid was serious for a certain demographic. The issue was forcing people to take an experimental shot that DID NOT confer immunity and was originally defined by the pharmaceutical industry as GENETIC THERAPY. The sociopaths then redefined it as a vaccine so all the sheep would line up to take it, and further lied stating that it would prevent you from getting covid! Now we have thousands of poor bastards filling the cardiac and cancer centers up with a myriad of health issues that most definitely stem from those shots. So, you can have it "both ways".

I always said that if I have COVID and I pass away from it its not because of COVID but the ongoing health issues i have and probably some bad lifestyle choices. The hospitals made COVID the cause of death for federal funds. That being said I could have gone duty disability years ago but couldn't look my family and fellow officers in the eye if i did. I have no problem with Officers who are truly disable because of the job getting taken care of. I despise Officers who "fell off a chair" and hurt their back and cant work getting full benefits. I was also one of those that never used it and toughed it out every time and look were it got me. The bosses don't care two shits about us blue shirts and especially our medical conditions. Bosses sit on their ass all day while the rest of us are humpin all day and they still manage to f@#k us with more time.
