North Side Gun Battle (UPDATES)
Seems this one went on for a little while:
A man who fired at officers responding to a shooting Saturday morning in West Ridge was shot, Chicago police said.
A 39-year-old man was walking about 9:30 a.m. in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue when a 23-year-old man following him opened fire, striking the victim in the shoulder, police said.
As paramedics were rendering aid to the victim and officers were investigating the scene, the gunman emerged from an alley and fired shots at the officers, hitting a Chicago Fire Department ambulance, police said.
The gunman continued to shoot at officers from different locations as officers returned fire. He was shot multiple times, then taken into custody and transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.
The shooter was popping in and out of different locations, firing and retreating numerous times before Officers successfully ended the threat.
An excellent job all around in a situation that could have been a lot worse.
UPDATE: Hate crime? The Department and the media won't say, so you know it probably was.

cOPA will say the officers should have layed down their guns and surrendered to the shooter to de escalate.
Unfortunately there will be 4 ptsd cases from this before the pension board in 1 year.

This is exactly why officers should not be rendering medical attention to gunshot victims. Let the paramedics do their job. Let the officers maintain security of the scene so the paramedics dont get injured.

Why is the department not releasing the motive for this? The poor victim was Jewish simply walking to Temple on California and the offender targeted him simply for this fact.

It was a hate crime unfortunately the offender here is a Muslim who snuck into the US through the unsecured souther border, it is an election year, it will be buried by both the department and the propagandist media.
From being there if a maniac purposefully targeting an innocent Jewish Man simply walking to the synagogue by a maniac during the Jewish Sabbath isn’t a HATE CRIME nothing is. During the Sabbath Orthodox Jews can’t drive or even use modern convenience’s and have to walk. There were 100’s of potential victims in immediate vicinity. As for a motive it was the anniversary of the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue Massacre as well as a simultaneous attack yesterday in Tel Aviv with a large truck running over people at a bus stop. Be careful kids this is going to start getting weirder.
West Rogers Park certainly isn't that quiet neighborhood enclave of middle-class respectability it once was. Street-crime is big problem. Most folks who grew-up here in 1950s - 1970s long gone. Neighborhood now is largely composed of recently-arrived immigrant population with a handful of gentrifier-yuppies attracted to its leafy blocks of solidly-built brick jumbo bungalow houses. Sadly, those yuppies are now dodging the bullets, and dealing with neighbors disinterested in maintaining their properties and jamming a dozen relatives into each home.
More veiled women and girls than yarmulke-wearing men. Devon Ave retail strip is dirty, disordered, and looks more like a 3rd-world bazaar than legitimate commercial storefronts. Alderwoman unfortunately is a big fail, despite her strong support from remaining Jewish community, and there's no suitable replacement candidate.

That was my Beat many years ago. I still remember the horrific day when a member of a white supremacist movement by the last name of Smith went on a shooting spree. He was targeting orthodox jews in the west Rogers Park neighborhood. Smith had been on a 3 day 2 states shooting spree in which about 9 people were shot and 2 were killed (including former Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong). He shot and killed the former coach in front of his children in Skokie. In these trying times and the political climate, every police officer needs to be very aware of their surroundings.
