The best boss I ever knew

We've seen a couple comments floating around in the other posts about bosses who were just absolute princes to work for. We won't bore you, or identify ourselves, by naming names of some of the bosses we worked for, although we might toss a few in the comments section anonymously, but who are some of the best of the best you've worked for? Remember the statute of limitations if you decide to relate war stories, although stories about bosses who have passed on to their heavenly reward are fair game.

NOTE: This thread is for GOOD bosses. We'll cover the dogs later.

I honestly thinking there are none. Actually Lt. Higgins is a great guy. He used to work midnights in 009. Since everyone liked him, they dumped him. Other then that, he was the last good boss.

Far and away Cpt. Dahlberg from 011. One afternoon at roll call in 012 then Lt "Smilin' Jack Murphy says, "I'm starting furlough tomorrow so don't shoot anyone." A few years later Dahlberg is at roll call in 011. He says,"I'm going on furlough tomorrow, so if you're going to shoot someone, do it tonight."

Enough said

How about bosses of the future? I think sweetbabyray, after he leaves his desk at 35th st., may be a great boss. Of course, he hasn't been on the street in a few years. I think Adolph will be a good boss of the future also.

P/S What happened to retired Sgt. N? Has he been chased away too?

Sweetbabyray probably would get CR #'s like crazy. I think he's a company man.

The late Captain Joe Mullen, at his retirement party, in his speech he said the Dept. has made a mockery of the rank of Captain, as they had just made all the "meritorious" captains. Even though he could be moody, he would never hurt a WORKING p.o., and the dogs were treated as such. You got a cr# for brutality, he simply said don't lie, if you were justified in using force, so be it. He actually backed his watch. You sure do not see that anymore. I sure wish he were alive to see King Richie gettin his due, hopefully soon, as Captain Joe was an old Byrne guy.

P.S. If I'm not mistaken, Lt. Higgo learned some of his leadership skills from Capt. Joe Mullen. You are right, Higgo is the last of the good guys, they even managed to drive him out. But at least we still have his wife, on our side.

The ABSOLUTE best bosses I ever worked for was Mike McCotter. 2nd choice (tie) would be his sidekick Bill Derrig who is tied with Lt. Stan Pasko who retired last year. These three guys are from the old school where once upon a time coppers took care of coppers, not like it is today (for the most part).

Captain Neil Francis, instead of being bitter, when he got dumped from the north side to 007, he just made sure he took good care of his watch. One of the greatest sense of humors on the job. And at least he admitted he had clout, but would not hurt a po.

As far as the garden-variety, worthless, suckhole pussy "exempts" go, those of us who had the honor of working under the command of the late George Sims in the old 11th District, 4001 W. Fillmore St. were truly blessed with a decent and honorable leader, admired and respected by ALL. He led by example and may well have broke the mold when it comes to being "a stand-up guy". A couple of Sims' best quotes:
"...in Fillmo', there are no white officers; no Negro officers--we're all BLUE!"; "We work hard and we PLAY hard!". A true gentleman and a lot of fun.

While the Fillmore of the late '60's may have had the dubious distinction of being the most volatile, violent crime-infested district ever and "THE dumping ground" of the CPD, it was Sims' leadership and the street-wise coppers around me that made it an unforgettable, sometimes bittersweet experience.

As many of the citizens we served (and locked up) said "Fillmo'? They be the REAL PO-leese!"

May God bless George Sims!

I said this before on another post, but since someone mentioned him here, Joe Mullen, simply the best. Vince Candella, who evryone shuold say a prayer for, was right there too.

There are good bosses on this job, I'm sure there are even more (just thought of another Billy Kushner). We need to keep their memories alive as example of how things should be. As examples for us, if and or when we ever make rank.

Certifiably damn good bosses are few and far between, but the 010th district was blessed with quite a few.

Ronnie Kelly - late for roll call, you own him a dollar, then he'd throw a party at home run inn with the years proceeds. 20 years as an LT because he stood by his guys and took the hit with them. We never forgot it.

Sgt. Mike Cogley - told everyone he was living on borrowed time anyway with the metal plate in his head. Used to go into shithole buildings by himself and worked every Bulls riot with no helmet. A working boss.

Sgt. Gary Morris - certifiably insane, got psyched off the job in the end. almost 25 years as a sgt and ended up with something like 19 shootings with half a dozen kills, (almost as many as Snethen)including the one in front of police headquarters where the asshole got a POs gun and Gary walked up behind him and just killed him dead. A police officer's Sergeant.

Capt Bobby Burns treated all the dogs like dogs and the workers like princes, whether you were black, white, or whatever. the only problem was 006 was loaded with dogs who ahppened to be black in the early 90's. The white officers who were dogs he buried also. He just wanted you to try, and like the previous poster said, you had to take the yelling from him when you screwed up, but then all was forgiven. The only way he screwed people over was when they started talking back to him. Hey, if you talk back to a bosses face, you get what you deserve. You have to respect the rank, even if you don't like the person. Talk all you want about him/her out of range, but in range, no way.

I would nominate Lt. Pete Degnan, now of the Sherrif's Dept., Capt. Dominic Rizzi, Ret., the late Eddie King, deceased; Capt Frank Sautkus, Ret., Capt. Bill Town 021. I think the common denominator with all of them is that you could trust them; they couldn't always do what you wanted but they always told you why and always took time to understand your point of view. Too bad Degnan's career was blackened by Burge. Eddie King was a prince like none other may he rest in peace.

I had forgotten about Buzzy Eichler! He was upstairs the whole time I was at 010. Bronze star war hero and (this is the funniest part) he lied to get in the Marine Corps. Aged himself a year so he could enlist. Keep up the lie for the police department and actually retired at age 64 a couple years after they reinstated the mandatory 63 age. What a character!

Lt. John Farrell is perhaps the finest detective lieutenant this job has ever produced. I have yet to meet anyone who has a bad word to say about him. If they ever actually promoted people on ability, he would be chief of dicks AND superintendent at the same time.

Wow, you guys are talking about a lot of people who I've dealt with or whose relatives are or were friends of mine.

Who was 4500 B-Boy? That guy was always out on the streets in the Horner homes back when they needed someone on the streets in the Horner Homes. Was that Logue?

Sautkus had a great reputation from the workers.

For senior exempts, I always thought it

I remember Cogley, and yup he was the real deal.

For senior exempts, I always thought you could tell who they trusted to get the job right by seeing who they put in charge of important events or places. In the late 90's, McNulty in 001 and Maurer.

I remember when they put the 19th ward guy in charge of Area 4. One day they were running a large street operation in area 4, basically 011, with about 400 officers. Who do they put in charge? Maurer. Hey, he was in charge of an entirely different area at the time, but when you wanted it done right...

I know there's a political component to it, but if you want to see who they actually trust to get things done at the DC level, look to who's in charge of 001, 009 and 018. Not everybody who's held those spots had the best reputations with the troops, but they were all people who could be trusted not to be fiddling while Rome burned.

And I always liked Cuello as a sergeant, but don't know how she's doing now. Apologies if this jinxes her and brings out all kinds of attacks!

Like "Patrolman Joe" McCarthy and Walter Vallee, Paul Jankowski was a POLICE OFFICER, invariably responding to "in-progress" calls.

Only problem was that Jankowski was NOT the sharpest knife in the drawer.

One time, as a deputy chief, he and a patrol officer apprehended the gunman on a "robbery-in-progress" in a store. Jankowski actually wanted to lag the beat officer for having his hat off during their arrest. A watch commander talked him out of it.

Regarding DeLopez, Jesus Christ, Buddha and Mohammed combined could not have saved him if it were not for his father and the organizations affiliated with his father.

If it were anyone other than the son-of-a-boss involved, they'd likely have been prosecuted. And their jobs would have been toast.

Not taking anything away from Farrell, but in Chicago coppers do get hung out to dry. Sometimes they deserve it, sometimes they don't, but given the publicity received in the west side incident, and the bad facts coming out of the ME's office, there is only one way to explain the (lack of a relatively significant) result.

How many officers can we name whose careers and freedom did not survive accusations or facts like those thrown out against D Jr?

And along those lines, please be careful guys, Kass called it right in his Sunday column when he alluded to the smokescreens being created by the mayor on the backs of city workers. The 47 firings last week were certainly no coincidence, and they are definitely looking for more bodies to throw on that fire.

Wouldn't you know it? Here comes the "LATINA" beefers.

A common houseplant has the same qualifications for Chief of Detectives as Maher--a slap in the face to the D.

Maher couldn't make a pimple on Farrell's ass. Either state her qualifications or STFU.

Maher left our unit when she was a sgt. (about 6 years ago). She was a very nice person. I didn't work for her, but she was an off-the-radar kind of sgt. Most youth sgt's are that way. The problem is that she isn't qualified to be chief of detectives. That is an across the board problem. Starks went from being a lt. in 011 to 1st Dep. in 2 years. That guy doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. None of these senior managers (their definitely not leaders) had to live with this accountability shit they are stuffing down everyone's throat. I left Area 5 because I couldn't deal with Cline when he was the boss. He micro-managed everything. The guy was fucking impossible to deal with. When he was chief of dicks I worked on two different cases where he was on the nextel with our lt. and both of them were talking in front of me & my partner about what we should do with the investigation. Fuck him, if he's so smart why doesn't come to the area and handle the case himself. We shit-canned both those investigations. A copper named Cameron got shot in 011 in 2003. Cline and his minions knew that IAD and the FBI had an investigation going on this guy involving narcotics shake downs. They were video taping and listening on his phones. The guys he was shaking down were the ones who shot at him. We knew none of this and we all went out and did what you are supposed to do when someone shoots at the police. No one ever told us we could be caught on tape. That fucker left us out there because of his precious dope case. I fucking puked the day he became superintendent. I knew how miserable all our lives were about to become. None of these fuckers are qualified to run the dept.

I've been told that when she was a det. in narcotics she was excellent at buying dope. She also had nice tits when she was young. Don't see how any of that qulaifies her to be chief. Its funny how fatso was a det. in narcotics and now the titty monster was a det. in narcotics. Are there any det.s even left in narcotics? I wonder what bonds those fuckers together.

Knighly Logue @ Company:

I dont know how much time you have on the job but with thirty I think I can make a call here about this evil cabal.

Capt Knghtly was no friend of the working police. Logue, Knightly and Follard should have been indicted for the major accident scandal, except the corrupt cops did the honorable thing and kept their mouth shut.

Knightly openly bragged about not having to do a battery to a p/o package for over a year. If you were gay and good lucking Big Jim would coddle you in his office and at his Sisters lake cottage. Remeber the Rump Rangers the gay officers amoung us no disrespect intended, to each there own.

Knightly should be fired for allowing Joe Airheart to lay there on the floor with a bullet wound to the head. No CPD officer should lay there dying. We always attack and move forward for one of our own. Not Merit Capt. Knightly.

Logue was a thief, back in are Task Force days, now he is stealing from the Sheriffs Office.
Nothing but a patronage hack from the 19th ward.

Nate Ross was invloved in the old westside narcotic scandal years back when he was a Sgt.

Art. Bischoff was off the job after the convention for beating the protesters. He was a gentleman and had brass balls. He was bitter after the first Daley hung him out to dry.

Dont forget the Late Joe Healy and
Joe Grubusic. Great men.

To the poster about Captain Dahlberg, he has no respect for supervisors! He allowed a white P.O to verbally disrepect a black Sgt and when the Sgt was called into the Capt's office-the Sgt was given a CR# for "No ID"-funny being that a) who is ever called out for "no ID"? and b) the Sgt's CR for insubordination was "unfounded"-even with at least 7 witnessess-including the Desk Sgt. At least he looked out for his crew-what a boss! P.S.-that CR against the Sgt was SUSTAINED.

While I agree with the 9:46 AM poster that while the First Amendment is sacred, any irresponsible ad hominem attacks are reprehensible. We can NOT let this blog site degenerate into a cyberspace version of the walls of shithouse stalls.

I am not acquainted with Chief Maher. She may well be the "nicest" person in the CPD--but a QUALIFIED Chief of Detectives, she is NOT...unless someone--ANYONE-- can post a resume that could surpass the excellence of over a hundred other candidates, most notably Lt. John Farrell, a consensus choice for this position.

I have no illusions of an overnight transformation of this dysfunctional, clout-ravished PD into a meritocracy. Notwithstanding, the outrageous arrogance of the appointment of Maher (albeit, a "nice person") to CHIEF is a transparent insult to the City as well as the fine men and women of the D.

While many, perhaps most, will agree, no ACTIVE member in his/her
right mind would make this TRUTHFUL post. Ultimately, retaliation would be certain.

Leave Lt. Scott from 022 tac alone, at least with him there are two taverns he frequents, that will stay open all night for the police and other trusted citizens.

TRs and Lanigans. Thanks to Ritchie the guys on the afternoon late cars can drink to five or six in the morning and avoid Brewbakers. When the tac guys have to work a full shift on the weekends at least we can drink our balls off with Ritchie and his bartending, firefighting buddies.

Also Scotty lets the poker machines pay off, what a great man,

As long as you drink Ritchie is a good boss. I wish I had his endurance.

Fran MC Carty was the greatest boss I ever worked for before the department made me dry out.

Fran took a unmarkewd tac car to his summer home, my wife wanted to divorce me, but I had to follow my leader.

Fran had the best bookie and was great for shaking down the taverns. We would eat and drink all night and not spend any money.

Fran was great at siphoning CPD gas, batteries and spares.

Fran was the best except when he would hit on other p.o.s wifes then he got disgusting.

Once he quit drinking for lent and was a miserable bastard. Thank God he saw the light, and went back to the sauce. He took care of us and made going to the job a pleasure.

26 years on the job. Worked for scores of Sgts, Lts and Capts. Some were good, some were bad. Hands down, the best of them all was Lt. John Farrell

Richie Scott is a 19th Ward political hack! The neighborhood where most of the southside police live, is being plagued with robberies, burglaries, etc., and he sits in gin mills all night long! Muster the goddamn troops and defend the fort!

Worked WITH Kevin Duffin on the Area One Saturation Team. No one worked FOR him! His phiosophy, not mine! He always said, we're all the police. We all do the same job. When your partner took time-due, you rode with him that night.
We always did a lot of good police work and he always made the beefs go away. Best sgt. I've ever had.

In response to that blogger who sees to be typing from under Capt.Dahlberg's desk, you don't know what really happened. If you think that disrespecting a supervisor is ok and the whole thing covered up by a racist Captain and an ineffective superintendent (Pre-current administration), then you need your attitude checked. P.S. Even if the Sgt. was a merit, there CERTAINLY are a lot being made now that aren't black. So WHO needs help now???

There was an Inspector in the 80's, he was also a tactical LT in 017 before that, But I can't remember his name. He passed away in the late 80's, he was a Stand up guy and always helped out. If he came to a job it was to be the police, not write anyone up.

DANA STARKS ?? C'mon now! When he was a SGT. in 005, one of his best snitches and do nothing laggies was Reggie LEE. Remember him? Sold a kilo or more to our narcotics unit. What was his quote? "Once a G-D, always a G-D" Thats why Danny BRIGGS had such a brick on him. BRIGGS has a top vote from me.
