Define Sympathy

A word in the dictionary between shit and syphilis.

What are we supposed to feel in situation like this? (Trib article here; Times article here) We feel sorry for their families that have to go through emergency room visits, rehab, and even funerals, but all of these goofs made a (bad) decision to put poison in their bodies. We just hope that they all have adequate insurance coverage so we (and you and other taxpayers) don't have to pay for their bad choices.

Okay, I'm back.

Hello to my buddy, Bush Boy, no I was not anonymously posting. I made a quick trip with a load of supplies to the New Orleans victims of the FEMA incompentance. (That's, as they say, another story)>

It is not wimpy to feel sympathy for a person who chooses to be a substance abuser. We have to examine the socio-economic factors which led to this choice. Personally, I blame a great deal on Reagan-nomics.

Saw the FAX message yesterday from sergeant in Bureau of Strategic about those who volunteered for New Orleans.

Basically it said it is too late to bring down new applications; don't ask if they received your application; don't ask who's going because they don't know if or when and don't call them.

Hey!! Lefty you going?

Lodge didnt know my ass! Keep up the fight markie boy.

TOUR OF DUTY PILOT PROGRAM UPDATE!!

The Lodge just learned today that this Pilot program will commence on 15 September 2005. Therefore, the Lodge has filed a grievance today, Wednesday, 7 September 2005. More information will be posted as it becomes available.

The Department is proposing a Tour of Duty Pilot Program that will affect all watches in the 004th and 006th Districts. This program will commence on 15 September 2005. The proposed starting times are:

A. First watch, beat cars:
2330-0800 (early roll call)
0100-0930 (late roll call)

B. Second watch, beat cars:
0730-1600 (early roll call)
0900-1730 (late roll call)

C. Third watch, beat cars:
1530-2400 (early roll call)
1700-0130 (late roll call)

D. Second watch rapid response:
1000-1830

E. Third watch rapid response:
1800-0230

Evaluation:
This Pilot Program has no duration but will be evaluated on a 3 and 6 month basis. The Lodge is not on the evaluation committee.

To put this in perspective the Lodge met with the Department last week because we have heard rumors about this pilot program so we set up a meeting with the Department where we voiced our concerns because the Lodge has a written agreement from 1993 that was signed by the Lodge and City establishing the existing starting times. This Pilot Program violates that agreement. What does an officer who works from 0100-0930 do when he has court at 0900. Does he take a squad car? If the Department lets him leave at 0830 to take his personal vehicle to Court and that officer gets into an accident will the City cover the officer? Will Court be an extension of tour thus depriving the officer out of the 2 hour minimum? The Lodge wants the Department to allow officers to bid by seniority for start times. How will the Department monitor the effects of these hours on the officer’s private lives? At the end of this meeting the Department assured us that our questions will be answered before the implementation of this Pilot Program.

This new schedule is total B.S. What about the coppers personal life. I know the brass will say the Job comes first, but come on. What about coppers who work midnights and have to get their kids to school by 0900. What about coppers with side jobs. Cline says he cares about the coppers, heck he's raising all this money for the memorial, see how much he cares. But this shows he doesn't give a rat's ass about the working copper. Some kiss ass genius who probably never worked a midnight shift in their life probably came up with this.

And, it is bad planning and could be avoided. Come to the districts and ask us how to fight crime. We'll tell you. They won't do that thouugh because they know we will tell them put more man power back in the districts. This would mean they have to take the favored sons and daughters out of tru and sos and other spots and put them in patrol. And we all know patrol is the worst place on earth to the bosses downtown.

I know some copeppers in 006, who are good coppers, and they are sick about this. They know there are some dogs out their and they are thinking of joining the ranks. What is the reward for humping a beat car in patrol?

I never understood why an OD pattern becomes the subject of a CPD community alert. These people are the ultimate drain on society; yet, they get a better warning than inner city residents who get no public warning when the next war starts in their neighborhood?

Better yet, when this happened on the west side in 011/025 last year, they actually dedicated CPD resources to this? Yeah, we have nothing better to do than make sure that the junkies are only getting good junk.

Regarding the DUI:

Yeah that Lt. in 020 is a jag. He should have let the copper kill someone and ruin a few lives. Now the copper will have to get treatment on paid time off followed by a 5 day suspension. Poor him.

No one is saying let him continue on his way. Whatever happened to driving him home & putting his car in the garage??? It's reasons like this there is so much dissension on this job!

DUIs are pretty much an automatic 30 days. Standard.

DUI should be enforced across the board. Know anybody who has been killed or injured in a DUI? There have been several stories recently where the offender was, gasp, an off duty police officer. Not sure, but it might be as many as 3! in the last 18 months where people were killed.

Personally having known people who suffered at the hands of drunk drivers, I'd rather the city and state make very aggressive moves against DUIs by anyone. Mandatory weekend in detention for first offenses. Mandatory month for second. Mandatory year for third. Mandatory 10 years for fourth.

And no, I don't even know what lieutenant we are talking about. Just saying that people shouldn't drive drunk. Not even special people who carry a badge and wear blue uniforms and a gun.

That copper that was DUI in 020 was found this morning in 023 on the lake front. He ate his gun.

Geez if was only a drinking beef, I wish we could have saved him,
one lousy mistake and now he's gone.

Some times I wish we took care of our own, the poor man should not have been left alone. Booze depresion and embarassment.

I will pray for his soul. I'm not even saying that first time PO DUIers should be fired or anything. Mandatory counseling and maybe that weekend in detention can correspond to 2 days off without pay. But serious counseling.

This is at least the 4th reason now in the last 18 months why we should be reminded not to drive drunk. I don't mean to sound preachy. I used to drive drunk on occasion, and regret it now whenever I think of it.

But I'm no judge. I just with this plague upon our house would end.
