More Money Pissed Away

It sums up the complete and utter arrogance of the mayor. Sure, there was really no reason for having an airstrip on the lakefront. It was loud, pointless and served maybe 10 people a year (or something similar). So did the mayor follow established procedures for shutting down Meigs? Nope, In the dead of night, he turned spotlights on fixed camera positions, shut down traffic and tore it all up.
Now, to fight a $33,000 fine for not giving 30 days notice, the City has spent $200,000 in legal fees. We think we're entitled to ask, "What the F$%^?" The mayor owns this town and all it's departments lock, stock and barrel. If he tells the Park District to plant a tree, they fall all over themselves to find a tree meeting exacting requirements and promptly send out a crew of 11 to dig, plant and water the tree. Every day if necessary.
Why didn't he just tell the Parks District not to renew the airport lease, wait 30 days, then close the airport and tear it up? What would that have delayed? The whole thing sat for months afterwards anyway. Seem the only people getting rich here are the lawyers. Damn, we hate lawyers.

His hired trucks were not making any money on an airport on the lake. Meigs field should have been sold to Boeing who could have turned it into the state of the art for urban aviation. We could have heliports and short take-off jet service to mid-range destinations. No, we get another park on the lakefront while our local parks fall apart.
Scc, that airport may have not been O'Hare or even Midway, but it served a HELL of a lot more than 10 people a month. Especially during the larger conventions. I'm a veteran P.O and small craft pilot who used that strip a few times over the years. It was a true gem for those who fly as a hobby, and those who spent THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS to do anything at McCormick place!
I don't think Daley's true intentions with that piece of land have been revealed yet, but it will benefit him somehow in the long run!

People don't realize that most of the organ donations were flown into Miegs and taken by Amb to the various Hospitals doing the transplants. Not to mention that if there was ever a REAL disaster here in Chicago, The Military would have been able to fly C-130's C-17's and I believe the C-141 with supplies or evacuate the wounded. Nice job mr mayor!

And to tie this and the Sorich trial together (tangentially), the Park District's Director of the Lakefront was on the favors list. Of course, her job was almost certainly exempt, but still.
Just another 19th ward sidenote.
Meig Field was the home site of one of the best programs i have ever seen offered in any city. Every Saturday kids from throughout the ciy were treated to air flights over the lake and the city. This was at NO COST to Chicago. A grant from the Fed Gov. provided the necessary costs.
private owner/pilots would provide the aircrafts. Some of the pilots came in from Michigan and Wisconsin to participate.
If you have every seen the face of a child, who has just experience their first time in an airplane. It would have been enough alone to keep Meig fields open. Sad, Da mayor and his political pals had other plans. i agree with
the other previous posters, this middle of the city airfield, was worth in weight in gold in case of any type of catastroph, especially for the loop area and nearby neighborhoods.

Sure, Richie is as arrogant as they come; but he does because he can. His power is unchecked, the voters are sheep, there is no political opponent who is willing (what person of intelligence and character wants the job anyway?)/able to run a serious challenge against him (given the racial divide of the city); so he bulldozes Meigs, overspends millions on Millenium Park, gives millions away to friends/contributors via city contracts, watches as aides/aldermen continue to be indicted and convicted by the feds, all the while saying, "Uh, I didn't know what was going on". Maybe the old saying, the people get the politicians they deserve, applies to Chicago; there's a reason why Chicago has been and is one of the most corrupt cities in US history.......

As a former active duty pilot and current Air Guard pilot I can tell you that there is no way in hell a C-130, C-17, or C-141 was landing at Meigs. Not unless you want the Marine Unit fishing us out of the water. It's nice to be anti-Daley, but at least ground the shit in reality. I'm drunk and I'm not going to start arguing the math of powered flight. Your argument is horse shit. I need my crew rest. Out.

The destruction of Meigs Field should have gotten Richard M Daley a long prison term.
I'd love to see it rebuilt bigger and better than ever. It was and is still needed.

Can you explain how they landed the C-130 at Meigs EVERY YEAR for the air show, Mr. pilot? I've been in it, so don;t tell me it wasn't there!

Yes, Chicago is a beautiful place. Compare us to Cedar Rapids, Cleveland, Newark, Dallas, etc. Not too many places have all of the physical features of our city, the animal cages notwithstanding.
Daley has a one-track mind. He has a hard-on for guns and gun owners and airplanes.
As a cop that owns guns (and no I won't register my hobby stuff), flies an airplane, and truly misses the ability to touch down on the lakefront.... This man is a disgrace!

You're wrong my friend! I saw a c-130 land there with my own two eyes before one of the airshows. You either are lying about being a pilot or are misjudging the runway dimensions. Is it possible that you are another military chooch posing as someone you're not? Bet you were a SEAL too.
You forget that the mayor shut the Lincoln Park Gun Club down without due process. The place was shuttered and bulldozed without a hearing. This city feels that it can do as it wants.

As I sit in my million dollar condo gazing out at the sunrise over the lake away from the garbage (human and otherwise) on the street, I do not want my peace interrupted by by the buzzing of planes. I appreciate the mayor's actions.
I will walk and ride my bike on a peaceful Northerly Island and enjoy the views and the quiet. Thank you to my fellow tax payers for providing me with such an opportunity. Feel free to get out of your cars and try it.

Actually a C130 hercules could land at the late Meig's Field. Meig's had a 3900 ft runway. A max loaded C130 only needs 2100 ft to land and 1500 ft to take off
The C-17 can operate on small, austere airfields with runways as short as 3,000 feet (914m) and as narrow as 90 feet (27.4m) wide, and can complete a 180-degree three-point "star" turn within 80 feet (24.4m).

Who ordered certain police to be involved in the bulldozing efforts. The request never went through proper channel's. Why was CTA given ability to do what they did with tear down, is that correct head of CTA, using police. Daley no knowledge, why the falling out with the head honcho on this then? Not to disagree,but I believe anytime there is a death in custody a CR has to be obtained. I am not positive but if you shoot someone no matter how cut and dried it is I believe a CR is obtained. CR#s are not always a bad thing. I am not defending anyone I just want the record straight. Is this the SGT that lives in Edison PK with the antique police car and gangbanging son?

A cr can be obtained without a specific officer being associated with it. I think if the ads didn't get a cr on that job he would have to be retarded. No offense to the involved officers, but he would have done worse by them to start out appearing to try to cover up. Obviously someone has an ax to grind with the ads-why not bring up the real issue, not this non-issue. Everyone loves gossip...especially on this board.

If someone dies in the lockup it's a cr so it can be investigated, if someone is caught trying to hang himself by lockup keeper doing his rounds it's usually labeled an E.O., extrordinary occurance, unless it's obvious there could be negligence, then it's a cr so it can be investigated.Lopez did the right thing, he's a great guy.
Would love to hear more about this Sgt's kid and the alleged gun pinch, what gang is he in etc.
