At Least We Aren't in California

  • Gripped by a 10th straight day of 100-degree heat, California sweated out the possibility of more blackouts Tuesday as the number of suspected heat-related deaths climbed to at least 56 and the rotting carcasses of thousands of dairy cows and other livestock baked in the sun.

Some communities faced their third day without electricity as the record-breaking temperatures strained transmission equipment.
And St. Louis isn't much better with almost 150,000 people still without electricity going on a week now following a huge batch of thunderstorms taking out transmission lines all over Missouri and southern Illinois.

But it's still hot out there.

I heard that there are two members of the city council who are going to try to draft an ordinance which would stop Jon Burge's pension payments

The City Council needs to move from its glass house before it begins to throw stones at anyone

They were able to vote themselves a big fat raise They suck

Question to the "old timers" ....
seriously is there an incentive to working hard out there? I work in a very clout heavy district and have been working pretty hard the past few years but constantly get passed over for tact, gang teams to officers with 3 years on the job that did barely anything on the watch, BUT all had phone calls. Why do i bother?? Will it payoff somewhere down the line? Or is the real answer to this job to just answer your calls, have a few laughs, get home safe? Is that a fullfilling enough career? I feel i'm at a crossroad here and need some advise from someone who's been here. Thanks.
(fyi betw 5-10 yrs on job)

to the officer questioning why he works so hard and ends up being passed over for the tact, and gang teams....remember this, expect dissapointment on this job on shit like that...nothing is done the way it should be...if it was you wouldn't have females on the job...why would you want to work with these clout babies anyway...do you trust them? you said it yourself they didn't do anything before they made the teams...so how much confidence do you have in them....it's the same thing in most districts...you have guys that work a beat car that will out police the idiots on tact teams....on top of that the beat car works 8, handles jobs, and still finds the good quality arrest...fuck being on tact you have no life...can't plan things ahead of time unless your on furlough...your days off get changed....you change shifts all the time......what's the benefit? being in civilian dress and cutting out early....and not hangling jobs....to me the disadvantages to work tact outweigh the advantages...keep making your arrests and smile every time you fill out those golden sheets of paper...

Females, and not to mention midgets, dumbasses, and former gangbangers. If the system went the right way, this would be a ot better city and the need for 14,000+ Policemen would not be there.

Pension is state law. Only the conviction of a felony while you are employed or as a result of your employment can cancel it. The city council has no power or authority over it.

Better yet, Florida is one of the few states that your home is protected from law suits. Yep, cannot lose the old homestead in Florida.

Heres a thought-Dean Andrews pretends to be a detective almost as much as he pretends that he is straight. "The ultimate leader is one who is willing to develop people to the point that they eventually surpass him or her in knowledge and ability."

It use to be that the Detective Division relied on its experience from seasoned Detectives, Sergeants, Lieutenants and Commanders to train the up and coming. When you have a Commander that does not have that experience and consistently overrides the decision of his managers the system beaks down. The Detectives have stopped trying to do more because they are tired of being slapped down by Dean. The Lieutenants and Sergeants have been rendered ineffective because the men they manage know that their decision doesn’t matter and that the decision will always be up to Dean and no one else. The supervisors lack the intestinal fortitude to stand up to Dean for what they believe in fear of losing their precious spot or being dumped to midnights. Dean dumps supervisors and detectives with no expectation and no regard for their work, experience, or the personal hardship it may cause; for some personnel this was too much to bear. Dean makes his management decisions based on personal reasons and how it affects only Dean, regardless what it best for the Division or the police officers they serve.

Andrews is not a leader, he expects people to listen and follow because he wears a gold star and not because he has earned their respect for the position he holds. The difference between a good Commander and Dean is; Dean says, Go! – a true boss says, Let’s go!
Andrews cannot expect to hold the loyalty of his detectives when he speaks to them as if they are insignificant. Andrews its time to look and the mirror and see the person you have become and not the god you think you are!

"Clout may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there."

If you're a worker, people will know it. You don't have to tell anyone, you don't have to make a phone call....just do your job and if you're a worker people will notice whether they like it or not. People that make phone calls to get on tact, gangs, etc. aren't fooling anyone, believe me. When the sh-ts goes down and they don't know what to do and you do, someone will notice. Calm down and enjoy yourself. The job isn't that bad! Ask some of these people who bitch and moan all the time the last time they did something productive on the job. And when they say they don't do sh-t because they are rebelling against the unfair system, call their bluff!

9:41 Post. I would agree with you sir but after reading the various posts on "dogasses" put in "higher pay categories", that is not fair. For instance, take a guy that works real hard on this job, hustles, gets appreciated and then gets on "tact" moving "up" from uniform to plainclothes. While on "tact" the guy hustles even more, writes a lot of search warrants, makes excellent arrests, and even gets into one or two good shootings. The "tact "guy then gets into a unit, as in gang intelligence AT THE SAME PAYSCALE as in "tact"." Now the "dogass" just rides on the coat tails of everyone, is really a lazy person not wanting to put out much effort on anything, never wrote a search warrant on their own, and never got into any shooting. The "dogass" then gets selected to be detective. WTF? AND THE DOGASS GETS HIGHER PAY and WORKS IN A/2 RBT? DOGGING IT STILL, NOT WANTING TO WORK ANY MORE THEN NEEDED? WTF? I know enough that life ain't fair but some changes are to be made somewhere. Just because a person is lazy, smokes cigarettes all day long, chews tobacco all day long, has bad body odor, etc. THAT IS NO EXCUSE TO GIVE A PAY RAISE TO A LAZY PERSON. I'm venting,of course because I say what I feel. You guys know I speak the truth. I hope those dogs know deep in their hearts that they are really undeserving of their position. Maybe gang intelligence is the spot where people would say what am I complaining about, BUT there is NO RAISE like detective pay. I am complaining, but happy that I know deep in MY heart I am giving back to the department all I can give because of my strong work ethic. I am proud to be a Chicago Police Officer. Proud. Can the dogass female RBT detective be as PROUD as I am. I doubt it. And then the RBT female detectives wonder why they are being made fun of. THEY ARE THE JOKE OF THE DEPARTMENT.

Back on topic in relation to the heat. Long after the 1995 heat crisis in Chicago a study was done on who died. Don't get me wrong, my nice very elderly neighbor died w/o air conditioning. The elderly neighbor was a dear friend to my mom, and what follows is in no way meant to denigrate her life or passing.

But the great bulk of those who died shared two characteristics: 1.) no a/c, and 2.) health problems related to heavy abuse (past or present) of alchohol or drugs. Lots and lots of people with liver damage.

I don't know why this is. I'm not a doctor. But there was a reason that so many of the dead (not my neighbor) were buried in south suburban pauper's graves.

Two lessons:
Don't age as an old drunk.
Please check on those elderly people you care for in periods of extreme heat. Even those with a/c might not like to use it. Make em.

As California is facing record heat, it is very likely that their herds have not been culled in the manner Chicago's was in '95. In the next 5 years, I'll bet a study will show that the bulk of their dead are similar to the bulk of our dead.

People with damage to the liver or other internal organs from years of drug and/or alchohol abuse, combined with a lack of air conditioning.

However, some will simply be like our old neighbor who refused to turn her air on. If you care about such people, go over and talk some sense into em.

That is all.

The paranoia that runs this department when it comes to promotions is unreal. The facts are these: Anyone in the building on 35th knows far before anyone outside. The calls are made and the nominations done long before anything is validated in print for distribution. As far as Sgts. go, look at the secretary desks in BIS, BOS, DOC, Strategic deployment, etc. That is the future of our leadership.
As Lt.s go, look to the D units, IAD and the DOC. All the heavy Sgts are there and the only way out is a promotion. Lets not forget SOS and OCD. The heaviest of the heavy are there.
Don't get your hopes up boys and girls. Whats to be done is done already, but behind the scenes.

The below article is such bullshit. Putting a camera in a park sends a message? None of these god damn things are monitored! Whatever happened to the gun detection equipement? I work in a district that has it's fair share of shootings and far share of cameras and have not heard the dispatcher come on the are once with a hit with this crap

These cameras just spin in circles. I for one do not want to see the blue light parade when driving through beverly or mt greenwood or any other good area. Put some god damn police on the street

Beaten teen leaves hospital

Ald. Rugai says new police camera in Beverly Park sends 'message to thugs'

By Courtney Greve
Staff writer
-----------------------------------
The 14-year-old heart patient who was brutally beaten at Beverly Park earlier this month went home from the hospital Tuesday, officials said.
Ryan Rusch's discharge comes just days after a new police camera was installed near where he was attacked and before a "unity event" organized as a reaction to the crime.

The St. John Fisher School eighth-grader was released early Tuesday from Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Ryan suffered seizures, a broken nose and brain swelling July 16 when three teenagers punched and kicked him as he walked through Beverly Park, 103rd Street and Campbell Avenue.

The survivor of three open heart surgeries — he's awaiting his fourth surgery — pulled out of a drug-induced coma last Wednesday.

A fund to help pay for his medical expenses has been opened at Beverly Bank & Trust Co. For more information, call (773) 239-2265.

Ryan's alleged attackers face charges including attempted murder, robbery and aggravated battery.

Several of Ryan's relatives and friends declined to comment Tuesday about Ryan's recovery, repeating the family's wishes for privacy.

Meanwhile, a wireless, continual-feed camera was installed Saturday at Beverly Park, Ald. Ginger Rugai (19th) said.

"Ryan's situation made me question how we could better protect against something like that and send a message to any thugs who might come into our area," she said.

The camera sends images back to the Morgan Park District police station and the Office of Emergency Management and Communications, she said.

Rugai said she paid for the $24,000 camera with her discretionary funding. She wants cameras installed in the 19th Ward outside every school and in every park.

Rugai said the camera does not replace the police but provides officers with another tool.

"It's a deterrent," she said. "It sends a strong message that we are not going to tolerate crime, especially against our children."

John Somerville, one of Rugai's challengers in the Feb. 27 election, organized a National Night Out event in hopes of sending a similar message.

The informal program begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Beverly Park. Somerville is asking people to show up with their flashlights and "take a stroll around the park."

"There's a need for people to come together and unify — both black and white, young and old, male and female — and make a statement that this incident is not dividing our community," said Somerville, a prosecutor for the Cook County state's attorney. "We need to show our diversity and unanimity against crime."

Somerville's event overlaps with the annual National Night Out program at the Morgan Park District police station, 1900 W. Monterey Ave.

Rugai's office is one of the sponsors of the event at the police station.Officer Mary Docherty said planning started in January for the free event at the police station. It runs from 7 to 10 p.m. and includes games, raffles, a bicycle rodeo and musical entertainment. Participants also can try the police department's "seat belt convincer" and "fatal vision goggles."

"It's safety-related, but it's also a lot of fun," she said.

About 500 people attended the event last year, Docherty said. She hopes to have a larger crowd this year.

"Maybe people could come to both events," she said. "The more things the community participates in the better."

Re:
Burge and pension...

"Innocent until proven guilty"

Doesn't this apply in all situations? Isn't Jon Burge innocent of allegations until a judge or jury of his peers decide his fate?

Doesn't the Chicago Pension Bd. have similar restrictions when it comes to elimination of an individuals earned income?

I mean, if I could, I would abolish the alderman position and their pay as well. I also think that I would be able to show more support numerically speaking than the aldermen could against a retired policeman.

This city needs a new legislative body especially if they are going to be receiving over one hundred thousand dollers per year for shooting from the hip.

7/26/2006 03:32:00 PM

zofficial misconduct is a "catch-all". It is used by the department or the "System" to categorize something that fits into NO CATEGORY, or if another charge was dropped. All it is, is a tool to fire coppers for BULL SHIT. It has been proven effective on a couple occasions, but most of the time it is merely a safety net so that the Department can save face, since they are victims of public opinion since CAPS took over.
The outcry from politicians, reverends, etc. is what brings Official Misconduct to the table.

And based on my military experience, I have more experience and am better qualified than 99.9% of any of the SWAT guys, yet I push a beat car. That's the way it is. You don't come here and cry everyday and air out an entire Unit's dirty laundry because you didn't get a choice assignment.

See, you guys think the bosses are going to read this and actually think, "hey that anonoymous sniveling coward on the internet is right! We better move an exempt rank member based on this information". More than likely, it shows the bosses that Andrews can piss off EXACTLY the type of guy who would come here and not so anonymously talk shit about him for days on end. Seems like Andrews knows exactly who he is "messing" with, and made the right move.

And that's my two cents from an outsider's perspective!

Well as of right now, due to promotions, retirements etc., they were short 31 sgts. I heard 3 weeks ago that Finance had given the go ahead for 100 slots to be filled. Whether or not the 31 is part of that is unknown. Plus there is word that another class of Lt's will be made in the 1st quarter of next year. I'm hearing 50-75 sgts to be made.

2:07am Tactical unit huh kid? Well, you could work your ass off and never get noticed for your energy, OR you could ask an Note:Alderman* to call your tac Sgt. If 009, that is the ONLY way!!
Choice is your's pal!

Been in 009 almost 10yrs and I still cannot get on. Not enough clout!

009 sucks ass. Piss poor leadership. Tac slots by clout or phone call. Bosses won't give time due. District ran by PO Amy "Secretary." Sgt Kemper on Days is a total bitch! Far too many females in 009. Wagon duty on Days is used as a punishment. Not enough coppers on Days. 009 is waste of manpower. Kid, you need to go to 007 or 011 to get noticed for tac.
009 is NOT for you!

while I agree about your statement about re-posting everyday, I think you're missing the point. I dont see personnel being moved to combat SWAT or HBT incidents therby leaving the districts short. I see them being moved because of the homicide #s. I would think that, with all the attention, we would want guys who can solve a homicide rather then blowing it and putting a person back or leaving them on the street to commit more. Since peoples' safety is being compromised everyday, P.O. and civilian, I would hope smart decisions are being made. In this case they aren't.

I would never work in a "slow" district like 009. After reading the countless blogs about the type of coppers in 009-I would have to say "no thanks."
Clearly a district which entertains itself with ridiculous coppers like the former 008th district tattoo guy "B.G.", Dan "Hi I'm Lukensmeyer" Lukensmeyer and the "purple shades" guy, is not one that takes itself seriously.
A district is only as good as it's personnel. 009 has too many goofs to be worthy of others. If I had a kid thinking about going to 009, I'd be redirecting his train of thought! Shameful! 009 is a complete joke.
009 wishes it had the quality of coppers like the other Southside districts. Sorry fellas, I'd work elsewhere if I was the kid.
Just my two cents about 009.

Did 009 go downhill?? I was there from 1987-1997 and it was a great place to work. Great bosses & you had fantastic back-up. If this is in fact true, it's sad because that was once a great place!

You sir, are an idiot. The three coppers from 009 you mentioned are probably the MOST well known, likable, working coppers in the 009 District! Each man has given their time and effort to making the streets in the 009th a better place to live. So, you wouldn't want your kid meeting these officers? Let me just say that it is your kid's LOSS having never met them.
The officers you criticize are what makes the 009 district memorable in a good way. B.G left 009 for 008 tac and is doing excellent in 008! Luke retired and is living healthy and well. "Purple shades" is still going strong in 009. If you don't know a damn thing about these men, then you shouldn't attack them annonymously. Insult a district that deserves it. Leave 009 and it's cops alone.

SHAMPOO MAN:

CAUTION:

If you decide to turn a custom baton or night stick from cocobola hardwood, beware of the sawdust emanating from the lathe. Unlike most exotic hardwoods, cocobola shavings and sawdust can be toxic, even carcinogenic.

If you must, wear a mask while turning or sanding. Seal and treat the finished baton with linseed oil.

Excuse me 844pm??? Gene Roy is a cop's cop? Where in the fuck did 009 get this micromanager? He lets his secretary run all the district watches. If she doesn't like a copper, then that guy or gal is royally screwed! Roy is a total mystery. Most of the coppers haven't a clue where he worked before coming to 009? Hardly a cop's cop!

Here is another lovely member of our local media. Hacks.

As a journalist, WBBM-Channel 2 anchor Diann Burns regularly delves into the private lives of others, but she wants her own private life off limits. She's trying to keep the public and media from full access to a lawsuit she filed against the company that she contends built her $3 million home shoddily because she is black.

Apparantly you were never the police. Dan L was probably one of the best working police officers I have ever known on this job. He got the job done. Get a life or get another career. And maybe try being the police other than a no police coward that doesn't want to be a police officer. One for you, Danny!!

7/27/2006 08:53:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Racist?lol try the other way around in 021,the militant blacks in 021 are out of control, for some reason they think they can do whatever they want, especially on afternoons becuase of the militant LT. there, they do not do a lick of work, stay down on simple paper jobs forever and when called on it by a Sgt. they cry racism to the Lt. who always sides with them and not his supervisors, because they are white. The desk crew comes and goes as they please, they openly defy their supervisors daring them to do something about it. Has anyone been watching the transfer order, 021 used to be a desirable place to be but now you only see people bailing out, especially supervisors. Strogers neice, Stanley ran that place into the ground with her lack of management skills and indifference to the obvious problem in front of her and has since been moved. The new Commander is trying to change things but has a long way to go, not his fault, it will be like trying to raise the titanic considering what he inherited there. 021 is the joke of the patrol division, sorry to say. Roy racist? that's funny coming from there, obviously he didn't go for the bullshit they pull there....
Sorry, had to vent.
