Review of Blue Light Cameras

Channel 2 News does a piece on the impact cameras may or may not be having on crime.
  • As CBS 2's Rob Johnson reports, the unmistakable blue flashing light signals to those living or walking through a specific neighborhood that someone is watching. But three years after being introduced in Chicago, just how effective are they?
  • Critics of these cameras contend that they are creating a big brother state, but authorities say there's no expectation of privacy on a public street corner.
Go read the whole thing. They interview a couple of "upstanding" citizens who don't like them and a couple of yuppies who do. Privacy issues are raised along with the fact that another $1 million is going to be spent on these things next year alone.

Pretty much your typical news fluff piece.

If we install all these camera's in high crime areas, won't we still need cops and beat cars responding to whatever occurs on camera?

So we will need more cops watching the cameras and more cops in high crime areas to respond, right?

Off topic but entertaining politics, a bit on Bryne and Daley early days. You will get a kick out of O.W. Wilson comment. Type in Jane Byrne remembered. I used yahoo search. the Author is Hanania an old City Reporter. There are two entries, the Introduction and then the Part 3 of 3. For those of you who are too young to recall or original out of towner's, the article demonstrates and tells the story of how the Chicago Machine game was and is played some things never change. Old timers will also get a kick unless your related, oops. You will laugh and awe, enjoy the 3 of 3 part.

Before I turn in there's a question regarding the article and the last paragraph which was the whole bland, empty story. Police? Which, who, what, dang, where? The unk Police referred too, more or less were quoted as saying. (They can't say where the additional camera's will be placed because it's a Homeland Security issue.) I thought the city said in the article the cameras are coming out of asset forfeiture funds.

So Here's the real question. What's this have to do with a Homeland Security secret? Do people buy this sh%t all of the time? May as well said, we don't want the dealer's and every other criminal insect getting a head up, before were able to do a little Shake Um an Wake Um, Winka, Wink. no we wont, we can get the new robo cop thingamajig to respond.

but first we'll have to load it on a truck, find the guy to operate the remote, drive to the location, unload the gizmo, set up the with the remote control, turn it on, arm it with a weapon, send it off to the scene moving at less than -10 mph and hope it doesnt topple over as it climbs the stairs, and then be utterly amazed as the offender(s) mearly leap over it and escape, AND thats only if they havent already gone home and been asleep for hours by the time that thing arrives at the scene.

sheeeeeesh

All the cameras do is highlight so-called "high crime" areas. There go your property values and any sense of security you might have. You can't hardly see anything on the videos anyway and cops sitting around the station watching "video games" are not out on the street patrolling. Waste of time and money.

Those cameras are actually of excellent quality. When I was in 011 we would use them, one guy sit inside and watch a spot and call them in, when something happened, request it be saved and watch Joe squirm when presented with it at trial, a slam dunk; most guys don't have the patience to use them though, it's a shame too because most don't think they actually work and are dummy cameras, alot of times they look right into the camera and still deal.
As far as 3H, get over it, if she rolls by and wants someone locked up there is a reason, she's a good boss, she rides around with 1100, whos great, I don't hear you complain when he calls for a few to go.
Enough with TRU already, you must be jealous, obviously when they are in the station sitting around they are processing and waiting for lockup, get over it and worry about yourself, real filmore rangers don't worry about what others are doing.

What good are the things if you have to be within view of the camera? In my opinion it defeats the purpose. If joe sees you then business stops. No arrests, just calmness on that corner until your called away. I guess that's a plus in the city's eyes. Or they move it around the corner. I have made arrests with the assistance of the camera on some occassions. On top of that, you have to stick this huge antenna thing outside the window pointed towards the damn thing. Again it defeats the purpose. In my district four of the cameras are not working at this time. Maybe we could send in robocop.

At the corner of Ashland and Armitage, the reaction was also mixed.

There is a camera on every corner street light in 018. There not there to lower crime they are there to fuck the police. A call this week was dispatched by a dispatcher who was monitoring the cameras and observed a woman damaging a vehicle. It is not the blue flashing light cameras that I am referring to. It is the hundreds and hundreds of cameras that Homeland security and the CPD have that can and are accessed down at OEC. LET'S SEE FIRST GPS THE CAMERAS IN CARS THEN THE ABILTY TO WATCH AND REVIEW YOUR EVERY POLICE ACTION THAT SOUNDS LIKE CONTROL BARRIERS TO CONTROL OFFICERS. BOY LET'S TAKE THE GREY AREA OF POLICING AWAY FROM OFFICERS AND HAVE THE ABILITY TO FUCK SOME MORE COPPERS. I DECLARE A WORK SLOWDOWN. THE CITY JERKS US AROUND FOR A LITTLE OVERTIME BUT CAN DISH OUT HUGE MONEY FOR CAMERAS. WE REALLY DON'T NEED TO HIRE ANYMORE OFFICERS WE WILL JUST ADD CAMERAS. I CALL BULLSHIT!! We will exclude all flashing blue light pods and the stop light cameras, none of which are in the ten sector.

Ummmm, you can view into windows. Should you? Absolutely not but what happens as you rotate the lens trying to catch on to a focus to blow up the street image, etc. it's a bit of a quirk and guess what? Training starts some where and inadvertent errors occur. Or is no one watching these cameras at a remote location at all and they just depend on rewind? Doubt there's many working the unit but lay odds. It's one sweet gig and someone is suppose to be watchin and zoomin. No rocket scientist needed for camera work, some of you probably saw the various camera image overlay at the news site. Each overlay including hidden over lays should have the ability to zoom by the remote operator and I mean ZOOM. Privacy concerns are to be considered legit, whether people realize it or not. Where will this stop is probably the future perception thoughts of some of those interviewed and not. Read the news Oak Lawn on red light cameras seems Oak Lawn is getting more as well. Also looks like some CFD trucks and Ambulances have cameras and recorders on their vehicles now.

The cameras are a godamn joke!!!
A murder happened in 022 last summer. POD camera caught the offenders fleeing the scene and getting into a car. The camera focused right on the front of the car as it was fleeing the scene towards the camera. Full view through the front windshield of the offenders car and the front license plate.

Unfortunately the quality sucked so bad that the video could not be enhanced any further to read the plate number on the car or get a clearer picture of the offenders faces.

I bet if they ran a red light on Halsted the red light traffic camera would would have snapped photos of the license plate and their faces. Clear and sharp enough for all to see.

See, just more smoke and mirrors for the public. The city won't put any money into any quality technology unless it can generate revenue. That's a fact!!!

It's just another gizmo showcased by the city with limited capability that will captivate and appease the masses.

As I see it, cameras accomplish two main feats, both of which please the city...

1. Pushes dealers around the corner, or at least makes them a little less conspicuous to passers-by who don't know any better. Smoke and mirrors.

2. Causes the working copper to slow waaaay down. Seeing as how the cameras are usually at dope spots, not as many dop pinches are made, which in turn means that there are less reports generated, which in turn means that there are less statistics generated, which gives the overall false apperance that crime is down. Crime is NOT down, the police just are not proactive under cameras. As in any job in any field, would you want a supervisor TAPING you at work? Common conversation at work..."see that guy by the blinkey? I bet he's dirty! Cant go through him under that damn thing! Where's lunch?..."

hire more police. fuck the camera's. the camera's aren't used by the city to help da poleez but they sure will be used the first chance they get to fuck over a cop.

to the person who said you use the camera to get arrests. thats great, really. now if only they would allow the police in each district and unit to view each and every cam in place. go online. pull up each area, then pull up each particular district. what a dissapointment. you can ONLY view very few cams in each district.

Like i want to watch the auto pound. like i want to watch the park after hours or the cam that catches the sides of 3 brick walls.

Try to make out a face or a license plate from the images. Most are not manned. They rotate usually away from the action. Not worth the money.

Lets expand on the 11/21/2006 09:56:45 AM post

Perhaps Head Apologist - Racist - Head up Her Ass - Completely Ignorant to Reality - Sun Times Columist Mary Mitchell should take the time to digest the following:

Based on figures from the US Census Bureau African Americans comprise approximately 13% of the population. The last time the FBI had the stones to issue crime statistics based on race we found that blacks committed 51 % of all part I crime in the US (FBI Statistical Review July 1986). Since then, politically correct politicians refuse to allow statistics of this nature to be published. Approaching the issue from a common sense perspective we can assume this population percentage hasn't dropped. To the contrary, it is not a big leap to assume that more likely the raw numbers have raised proportionality with the population expansion in the black community. Let’s see if I have this right? A little less than 13% of the population is most likely responsible for over 1/2 of the crime in a society. According to Ms. Mitchell logic my bringing this forward qualifies me as racist. America wake up. Let the liberals assume the responsibility for a failed social experiment that allows members of the African American community to walk away from their responsibility based on the events of 200 years past. There is not one person in this country who has been "DIRECTLY" affected by slavery. BLACK AMERICA stop the bullshit and take that chip off your shoulder.

let me tell you this, you can put up a million cameras on the west side and it still isn't going to stop shit. the real money is in the red light cameras that jagoff daley put up to 'decrease accidents' but in reality are just there to generate revenue to put up more flower pots, speed humps, traffic circles, etc. as soon as the general public realizes that this mayor doesnt give a shit about the public but rather only cares about what buddies get a city contract, the better off this city will be. as far as the two year wonder: get a grip ass-wipe. this department wants you to bust your ass everyday but when push comes to shove will only stick it in your ass. get with the program moron. also, regarding the total retard unit AKA TRU: i've never seen a bigger bunch of hand job coppers in my life. three years on the job, mostly spent in softball districts, and walking around the west side like they know whats up. one bagger weed pinches and vehicle impounds. hey TRU: STICK IT!!

flashing cameras with plate scanning capabilities, GPS, and dashboard vid. It's all tools used to force a young dept not be like those who came before and gave CPD the respect it has. All this job wants is empty holsters and whats left of that old school tact man to leave.

I don't know who you are kidding, I was a Sgt. in 011 and saw plenty of the cool tac guys walk in with one rock or weed and an impound all the time, but from the way you sound, you must have brought in kilos all the time. It's funny, before TRU everybody talked the exact same shit about SOS......
get over it already,

there is no comparison between hegewisch(hog wash) and Mount greenwood, other than white police officers live there. hog wash is a shit hole laoded with gang bangers and section 8, its a neighboorhood on the way out. Mount greenwood is the last far south side neighborhood thats liveable for whitey.

Not so fast there...I agree that Hogwash is not exactly Orange County, but Mt. Greenwood is on the way out too...remember the racial beat down in beverly park a few months ago where two m1 teens put a m2 teen in the hospital because he is white? (that was their quote in the paper)
And there more than quite a few non residents milling about western, Kedzie, and 111th street. There were some passers by on the way home to Dolton last weekend that got out of their car and started fighting in the street at 97th and Pulaski before getting ran over by a car.... what the heck is going on down here?...If this keeps up, I'm out. I'll be renting up north.
