Darwinism Strikes Again
Why do people continue to do stupid things like skydive or climb mountains? Hasn't human ingenuity rendered the need to climb mountains pretty much obsolete?
- Rescue teams gave up any hope of finding two missing climbers alive on stormy Mount Hood and abandoned the frustrating, 9-day-old search Wednesday at the request of the men's families.
- [Local Sheriff] Wampler said the men's families made the decision to end the search as yet another snowstorm barreled in.
If you are that desperate to do something that could result in your own death, fine. Just don't expect us to pay for your funeral or pay to raise your offspring. But when you needlessly risk the lives of so many people trying to rescue you, you really ought to be stopped. At least someone in the family had brains enough to call this one off. Sheriff Wampler is to be commended for running a very thorough search, but he thinks he failed by not finding these climbers. He ought to be given an award for not losing anyone else during a search for people who just needed to push the boundaries a little too hard. And a little too unnecessarily.

Well I feel bad for these guys to an extent-none of them had FBI numbers and they each had jobs. But what the fuck? I get out of the stream as the thunder gets nearer. I stop guzzling Hofbrauhaus at the first hic cough, and I would'nt climb Mt. Hood in December! And I bury the squad in an industrial park on the Westside at five minutes to midnight on New Years Eves!
thanks to bozo thief in 008 who returned about 31 missing jesus statues.
If you filed a missing jesus report in clearing, don't forget to stop by st symphorosa to identify your missing jesus....
People who do inherantly dangerouss things ought to be required to carry insurance that pays for their resuce. Permits ought to be required and issued only with proof of that insurance. So if you are on a mountain without a permit then you are on your own. But our society would rather spend millions on these idiots than face the shame of letting people die. It is like smokers. they ought to pay higher health insurance premiums.
To Extreme Sport Enthusiasts, I and millions of others thank you for the hours of laughter you bring us watching your fateful antics on video.
To Police, EMS, and rescuers, we are sorry for you, but thank you for having the stomach to care for or clean up after them when they go splat.

MY OWN, PERSONAL, JESUS?
In Arizona, there are signs clearly posted that read "DO NOT ENTER WASH WHEN FLOODED". (For us Midwesterners, a Wash is a low-lying gully that rapidly fills with run-off water from the mountains during bad storms). If any idiot gets caught in a wash and has to be rescued, they are PERSONALLY BILLED for the emergency response. That means, they pay the hourly salay of all emergency personnel who respond, as well as a use fee for emergency equipment. Arizona will even place a lien on property if necessary to collect. All reports indicate that since Arizona instituted this policy, the number of stupid people stuck in washes has been reduced by 90%. Seems that the same rule should apply for idiots who climb mountains in the dead of winter. If they die, bill their estate to recover costs.
Most municipalities that have rescue operations charge the person, in this case, the family of the person rescued. Not all, but most. They died doing something they loved. Some die on motorcycles, some die playing golf. In my humble opinion, they died a better death than most people on this job. How much better is it to die just after retiring because you have nothing else than this job?
