Blackhawks Still Suck

  • Here's how far big-league hockey has fallen in Chicago: The Blackhawks can't give away their tickets.

One of the National Hockey League's charter franchises, the Blackhawks have been so desperate to attract fans to a half-empty United Center that the organization has been offering free seats through numerous promotions, including an e-mail campaign that put top-notch freebies the length of a hockey stick from the ice.

"It's called papering the house," said Barry Melrose, a former NHL player and now a hockey analyst for ESPN. "I'm not surprised they are doing it. It's been a terrible period for the Blackhawks. People are frustrated and angry, and the fans are showing it the only way they can, by staying away."
Fans staying away. Not buying tickets. Empty seats.

Through no directed effort, just a general disgust with Bill Wirtz and his failed management, fans are driving one of the Original 6 franchises into oblivion. One wonders what other failed management could be driven into oblivion with a halfway concerted effort of not doing something involving tickets. Hmmm.

Hockey is about my 4th most favorite sport, many people love the game but I don't. To me it ranks right above soccer. More of a football and baseball kind of a guy myself. That being said, I can probably give a more objective observation of the Black Hawks than most. The team will never be good while old man Witrz has control. Maybe some day he will turn over the team to his son, and they will be good again. That being said, you rabid hockey fans better beware, if no one continues to show up, Wirtz might sell this once proud franchise to someone who will move the team to greener pastures. As a baseball fan, I can tell you that in the 50's no one thought that the Dodgers would ever leave Brooklyn. You hockey fans, don't think it can't happen. Just because they are one of the original six teams in the NHL doesn't mean they can't be sold and moved. If that were to happen, they would probably get good and win a couple of Stanley Cups.

Well, part of the problem is

1. Hawks have TERRIBLE publicity. Seeing as how I can't watch a HOME game on tv, it's kinda hard to follow the team at all. I consider myself a casual fan, and had NO idea that free tix were available! Maybe if they were on tv, they could advertise the free tix, and people would be aware....I shelled out for a game this year, and would have been delighted to get free tix. Owner Bill Wuertz really ran this train into the ground... How can he expect to advertise or sell a product that no one can see without comcast sportsnet? And that's only away games!!!!!

and 2. The damn auction sites. Chuckleheads were snapping up FREE tix and SELLING THEM ONLINE! Legalized Scalping is really a bummer....I can't get many regular priced tix, and can't afford the StubHub, Craigslist etc. infaltion....

We have an NHL team? Intresting.

You wouldn't know because the money-grubbing owner won't but games on tv so people will be forced to go buy tickets.

That plan appears to be working swimingly!

It's plain & simple . Wirtz should sell , sell , sell . He has taken this team and ran it into the woods. I for one am glad that the fans are finally getting the message and not showing up. Mr Wirtz it's time to get out of the HOCKEY world. This team will always be an also ran as long as you have control.

Hockey blows! Its a sport that should die and go away. Its a sport for those who live near Canada. Their strike in the past killed it.

You mean like the Daley Administration and how he and his picks to lead the Chicago Police Department has driven us into an abyss of oblivion? When you go from 30,000 dying to take the test to become the Police to a couple thousand if you're lucky. A once proud and powerful organization reduced to a bunch of sea goin snitches. With Daley at the helm we'll all sail right off the edge of the earth. With all of the exempts kneeling at the Daley alter telling his highness how much they love his new cloak. In the meantime the Barbarians are at the gate as Rome burns. As King Richard plays his fiddle.

tix to Hawks games are way too overpriced, plus the Hawks suck. Better off going to see the Wolves..Same with pro B-ball, , tix too high, parking, etc sucks. I recommend the Joliet Jackhammers Baseball for a nice family nite out.

The Chicago Rush football team has a better following than the Blackhawks!

Goes to show we don't miss hockey in this town anymore.

It is an expensive and boring sport anyway!

LET'S GO WOLVES!!! AT LEAST THEY PLAY A DECENT GAME. GRANTED IT'S A BIT SLOWER THAN THE NHL; BUT FOR THE MONEY AND FAMILY FUN, IT GREAT HOCKEY. THE WOLVES BEGIN THE PLAYOFFS SOON.

Have you noticed that you can't get any Bell's Ales in Chicago anymore? Thanks, Mr. Wirtz. Your beverage distribution acumen is exceeded only by your hockey management skills. You, sir, are an honorary Indy Legend of Marketing.

This just in. The hawks have just drafted Seiser! expect ticket sales and attendance to go through the roof. In his rookie year expect Seiser to lead the league in penalty minutes, but since they will be from totally incapicitating the opposing players, this will result in tremendous one sided victories. Long live The Seiser!

Are the Hawks using "merit "promotions" out of the minors?

It looks like it.

Just like CPD

This is beating a very old dead horse. The Hawks have made the playoffs once in the last 10 seasons.

For you dreamers out there, wake up. Wirtz will never sell the Hawks. The UC was paid in full in less than 3 seasons. Wirtz is the majority owner of the UC. He will have his hand in the Hawks and Bulls pockets till the day he dies.

I do like you comparison of the City vs the Hawks SCC. U have the King Daley and Wirtz, both r old, stupid, and care about nothing but themselves. Dale Talon and Heavy PC r a good comparison, both do the best they can with a bad hand. They were doomed before they started. The final comparison would have to be Bob Pulford vs the rest of the CPD command staff. They r all equally stubborn and living in the past.
