Channel 2's Big Story

  • Rossi says he was repeatedly beaten inside a Bridgeport building by a group of thugs and he says Chicago police officer Catherine Doubek, did nothing to stop it.

Records show Doubek lives with one of the alleged attackers, who accused Rossi of knowing about heavy equipment stolen from this business.

"She sat there and said the beatings will stop when you tell us what we want to know, Rossi said.
So the officer isn't accused of kidnapping, beating, or pretty much anything except sitting around while some unnamed offenders beat Rossi. Let's see - a kidnapping, construction equipment, duct taped to a chair, beaten, Bridgeport ... does anyone see any clues we could string together here? Anyone who isn't blind and ignorant of Chicago politics?

This was an Outfit job, plain and simple.

But of course, Channel 2 isn't going to say that. Some reporter might start getting calls in the middle of the night. Should Doubek's allegedly poor judgement in friends be overlooked? Of course not - give her the Rodriguez treatment the whole way if you can prove she was there, hanging with felons or Organized Crime figures. But to use her to slam the entire Department and entire investigative process? Give us a freaking break. No wonder Channel 2 had to drag the Abbate video back into the limelight. This is some shallow, dumb and weak investigating.

We did like how they demoted the Chief of Detectives though:
  • Detective Maher confirmed Thursday that Catherine Doubek was stripped of her police powers and there is an investigation into the beating.
Wow - from Chief to D-2A in a single report. No wonder Zekman didn't have her name all over this crap - it's half assed at best.

How can Maher live with herself? She is a disgrace to the Detective Division.

When Cline leaves, she should follow and embark on her new career as a counselor for battered women.

Kathy Dubek is a good officer. She worked for me for a number of years and has 3 minor children whom she has worked very hard to support. I frankly doubt that she would be freely involved in anything. I'm actually glad to hear that she has been stripped because she is also a licensed mortician. Sometime we become so comfortable with the department that we have to be pushed out the door to pursue our rel passion.

Police Board verdicts all about connections
In response to Demetrius Carney, president of the Chicago Police Board (Letters, Feb. 4), the public should be afraid. As a former Chicago police officer, I can safely say that Carney is trying to justify the existence of the board.
Every member of the board is handpicked by Mayor Daley. These people who judge the police are not elected by the general public, and thus feel compelled to bow to political pressure in certain cases.
The board has no criteria in rendering its verdicts. One police officer can be fired for domestic battery, yet four others can be returned to work. One officer can be fired for a "sustained" charge of brutality against a civilian, yet others are put back on the street after the same offense.
Certain police officers are dismissed for unlawfully discharging their weapon, yet others go back to work after serving minimal punishment. Certain officers are convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol and fired, yet others still are working after Carney and his board members have, as he put it, "painstakingly reviewed hearing transcripts" and "considered the conclusion of an experienced hearing officer."
Ha! I have to laugh.
If Carney differs with me, then ask him and the Chicago Police Department to publish or post on the Internet all the verdicts they have rendered in the last five years, and the actions that were involved by the accused officer. They hide behind the Freedom of Information Act, saying the public can get this information at any time. Anyone who tries will be stonewalled by an unbearable process of delays and excuses and in all likelihood will give up. If they persist, they would find that the Police Board put officers back on the street who have been found culpable of brutalities against civilians, unlawful use of their weapons against civilians, driving under the influence, drug-test failures, spousal abuse and sexual misconduct. There are enough cases to write a book.
All of these officers have one thing in common: They are politically connected to Daley or the man who truly runs the Chicago Police Department, (First Deputy Police Supt.) John Townsend. The public should not worry, though. Some officers who have retired or left the job are contemplating writing a book modeled after Pros and Cons, written about the NFL football players and how the league has tried to cover for some of its players' gross indiscretions.
When these real police cases are published with real names and facts, the public will see that the Police Board is neither impartial, fair nor honest. Carney should be honest, or have the facts make him honest. It's his choice. John O'Brien, Jefferson Park The Miriam Maxim

UNION NEWS
In light of the way the department is handing out suspension time and stripping officers, we must demand in our upcoming contract negotiations that if you are made 30 pending separation that you are in a paid status or on paid leave.

Currently if you are 30 pending separation you are not in a pay status. The Supt can not fire you, only the Police Board can but he can make you 30 pending and that effectively places you in a nopay status. Basically you are fired with no pay or benefits.

The Milwaukee PD must pay its officers full pay plus benefits while they are pending separation. This is in their contract. MPD also must grant time due to its officers and hir back PO's if needed at time and a half, this is also in teir contract.

Officers must wakeup and hold their elected union officials accountable. We pay their salaries and all we get is SILENCE in return. The current FOP 7 will not be re-elected but we must make sure that whoever replaces them has OUR collective best interest at heart.

CPD no longer conducts organized crime investigations! This development was ordered by Cline. The reason was the FBI discovered that Hanhardt was his mentor and they would no longer work with CPD.

The IAD is ineffective under the current administration. If it was effective we would not be suffering through the bad publicity generated by the SOS scandal, Abbate, Jefferson Street Tap, Weems and now Doubek.
note--Debbie Kirby and CPD should get no credit for the SOS investigation as they ignored the problems and when the SAO realized that they were doing nothing they conducted the investigation withour any assistance from CPD.

These problems exist because Cline wants to protect his minions and friends and has promoted weak and ineffective managers. His idea of effective discipline is sit on same and hope that the media does not find out about it.

These problems really started under Hillard who listening to Cline and his ideas pushed out many experienced bosses prematurely who could of provided leadership based on years of experience.

Those who will suffer are those who remain behind when the Justice Department and the Federal Courts take over the operation of CPD.

off topic..... i am so tired of these illegal hispanics complainig about how they are mistreated. its even sader that american hispanics/and non documented citizens support their protests that occured on 26th street. why should these people get special attention and get supported by political leaders? the hispanics complain that ever one here is illegal and came from some other country. im not a hater or racist but these people forget that every person who came to this country before them had to do many things to adapt to the american culture. no nationality had their language just translated on every thing marketed so they could read what they are buying.why is that every thing is always in english and spanish? is that racism? this country is making it easier for these people so they do not have to learn english like every other person who came before them.many if not all get free schooling, medical, food, clothing, and money compliments of the tax payers. is that discrimination? very few have insurance and thats one of the reasons why insurance rates are so high. and what is the topper is how many times to you stop these illegals and they claim not to speak english (which they do) and have nothing which shows responsibility such as plates , insurance, license, but the women all have baby phat clothes, razor phones, fresh pedicures, nice jewerly, and the men all drive escaleds, eukons, navigators, or something that i could never afford. and i have read and heard many that say having fake soscial security cards and other documents is no big deal because they are only using them to work? what about the poor honest hard workers of all nationalities that are effected by this when they are found after buying these cards that the social security numbers are real and belong to innocent people. at least if you buy a fake id use your real name instead of a fake name and dob.i have no respect for these people and agree that these illegals have way to many rights and take complete advantage of the usa. i remember after 911 when i stopped a car on one of the mexican holidays when they displayed like 50 mexican flags on their car while driving on 26th street i asked them a question. "where is your american flag along with your 50 mexican flags in honor off all americans that were killed including hispanics on that terrible day?" the response..im not american im mexican...keep in mind he is making the american dollar and sending it back to mexico. if mexico is so great and you love it so much, THEN GO BACK!

10% of NYPD Resigns Not Including Retirements

Daily News: In a story where the Mayor claims that only a “handful” of police officers have left the NYPD for better paying law enforcement jobs, the PBA responded that over 4,000 “experienced and expensively trained “ cops resigned from the NYPD in the past five years emphasizing “that’s resigned, not retired.”

Looks like morale is at an all time low for our brothers in the NYPD too. The only difference that I see is that out there they resign and here they get fired.

Checkout how proactive the NYPD PBA President Lynch is, puts the FOP to shame.

To SCC---
I was the poster who made some rather unkind remarks about Elvira and Slim under the protest march thread.
I can see why you had to moderate that post. Overboard is overboard.
Sometimes I just get sick of having to pander to people who are here illegally and don't have the sense to shut up and fly under the radar.
There are some things that the media won't touch concerning that situation.
Elvira has a son which means the son has a father. If she doesn't want to return to Mexico with her American Citizen son, where is the father and can't he step in?
How is the hunger strike going? Haven't heard boo about it lately?
I don't care if the feds ever go in and snatch her up. What is Slim's reasoning for harboring her? Can it be simply his "good deed"? Is he looking for publicity? Is there something else????
Maybe I expressed myself a little more civilly this time.

Thanks.

I was working that night. The fix was in from the start. The commander of 009 received a call from "someone in the 11th ward" who told him to stilfe the investigation. He in turn calls the W/C and tells her "not to make a bigger deal of it than it is" according to him "we don't know if the police were involved or not" so knock on the door and note it in the case report (which they did). He told her not to worry about preserving a crime scene because "thats the detectives job" and she was also told NOT to get a cr# (even though the G.O. clearly states that when there is AN ALLEGATION that a police officer is involved a CR# is to be obtained)
Nice job Gene (or Gene-o as they call you in Bridgeport) maybe NOW the Supt can dump you like he's been wanting to. And don't say you didn't know because the WC is required to call you (any time of the day or night) if something happens in Bridgeport.

Hmmm. Maybe we should mention it the next time they are at roll call. Which would be the first time. This union is apathetic and detatched. They should be renamed detatched services! Would it kill them to figure out that the ONLY way to get someting done around here is to go to the press? Daley figured that out a long, long time ago. Hence the rally for the olympics. At any rate, call a conference once in a while! Copper in shooting should be automatic, especially if the revs are acting a fool. Stand up there, say you support us, smile for 2, 5,7,9, 11,32, and telemundo. Don't field questoins, state the facts. example: "Without getting into specifics, it is known at this time, as has been reported by many of you, Bad guy did this...copper did this, we back him...long exemplary service record, should be reveared as hero, was well trained and followed through, provided a great service to the city of chicago, those "reverends" marching down the street are ambulance chasers. etc etc have a good day." You’re right in that we are always asking that bosses stick up for us and take our side or at least listen to what we have to say. But in the Weems case you are wrong. A supervisor sets an example and in this case Sandra Day set the tone for the investigation and its results. She fabricated information and made up lies. Who in their right mind was going to go against the street deputy on the scene. She was the highest ranking official on the scene and ran the round table 7 hours after the shooting.

Day should have a CR# issued for this, investigated and stripped. She has lied on a official police report and has brought discredit to the police department. She aloud the investigation to take the course it did and now a P.O. will pay the price. She should have questioned Weems account of the story after having viewed the tape.

An accident shooting is understandable under pressure when confronted with the situation Weem was under, but to have concocted lies upon lies is not understandable.

Sad but I believe it's true, it is time for a Federal takeover of the CPD, there is far too much corruption going on, too many cover-ups, and the Department is far too politicized to be able to function as a completely professional law enforcement agency, as there are far too many in positions due to political manipulating, not because they have any talent or leadership capabilities. This all causes a snowball effect and a breeding ground for continued favoriteism, nepotism, corruption, and constant scandal and cover-ups. The amount of corruption already exposed in the CPD and the city in general is already astronomical, with probably only a few percent of all the corruption going on even being exposed. Too many have been getting away with too much, for too long. The tax paying citizens of the City and the police officers with integrity are the ones hurt the most by this, also the victims of serious crimes, who will never see the offenders whio victimized them caught, the offenders will never be caught, because there are too many in investigative positions who really are incapable of solving even minor crimes, but are there no less, due to political connections, nepotism, phony "Meritorious" promotions of far too many who have never done anything remotely close to being Meritorious, in these and supervisory positions. The whole way that this city and the Police Department operates is in need of total reform, this is obvious, but who will do it? Federal intervention is unfortunately necessary, as well as Federal monitoring of all testing for any positions within the CPD, as well as a Federal Judge ruling that takes away all patronage/meritorious promotions from Daly & Co. for a minimum of 5 years, due to his gross misuse of power which is well documented by so many of Daley's inner circle who have been indicted and convicted for corruption related crimes.

Dubeck a good officer, are you fuc#i*g crazy? Because she has kids? Who doesn't , ass-hat. If what has been exposed is true, she witnessed , and or participated in, a serious crime, did nothing to try to stop it, covered up at least her part in it, didn't report anything, probably had prior knowledge of it, or additional knowledge of the crime, and is probably involved as a friend or girfriend of someone who is a criminal, or who has several criminal connections. It's obvious something occurred, and she was part of it, and it wasn't baking cookies for her kids, Dumb-Bo... And you say she worked for you? You must be some supervisor. If she worked for you in the CPD, with your mentality, know wonder this department is in the shape it's in. I wish I was really high up in the Department so i could find out who you are and dump you to the lowest bowels of the Department, or better yet, fire you for being too stupid to be allowed employment within the CPD. If she worked with you as a mortician, thats good, it's where you both belong working, except I feel sorry for the stiffs you two would be working on, as #1-they are dead, and #2- they are stuck with you 2 apple-heads working on their corpses, and #3, they can't do anything about it. You are truely one of the dumbest pri*ks ever to hit this blog......

Just a question for the one who wants a FEDERAL takeover due to corruption in Chicago, what makes you think there is no corruption in the Federal Government???

To 1:03am. Why don't you go work in the suburbs or another big city police department with no corruption or cover-ups you dumb fuck. Obviously you are a first generation police officer with no fucking clue. Every major corporation, lawfirm, bank, media source, government, you name it covers up something to make the greater good roll smoothly. We work in a job that has so much grey area that any task that we do day to day could be percieved in either a good or bad light. It is our responsibility as a department to make sure we make that perception in our favor, and also the city who represents us. A federal take over makes you sound like a typical first generation rat fuck who can't believe what there eyes are seeing in this city. Grow up, let the feds deal with their own problems, like immigration, terrorism, couterfeiting, and drug importing, and let us handle our own problems. So put your papers in and go to be the police in some north suburb where you would fit in.
-You future Superintendant

They are politically connected to Daley or the man who truly runs the Chicago Police Department, (First Deputy Police Supt.) John Townsend.

Um, what world are you living in. Townsend retired some years back and has been dead for a few years. Unless he is still running the Department from the grave.

Go backi into your semi finished basement, have another beer from the fridge and clog your arteries with microwave pizza. Maybe you can join Townsend and he might give you a spot.

You fools who keep hoping for a government "takeover" of the CPD are really pathetic.

Mommy, daddy, this job isn't runnng the way I want!

Make the bad men go away, let's have the nanny government take care of us and tell us what to do!

The government is really known for how efficiently they run things.

Can you say FEMA?
Can you say POST OFFICE?
Can you say AMTRAK?

D.C. politics is every bit as bad as our local scum sucking aldermen and mayor.

Grow up, do your job, make changes yourself. OOOps, forget that last one. You are too pathetic a loser crybaby to make the effort yourself. You would rather whine and complain, it's easier.

I'm sure we would get a fair shake fron Nancy Pelosi, Ted Kenndey, Harry Reid, and all the rest of those police hating assholes who infest Washington.

Quit!

Hey Savini/Futterman,

Maybe only a small number of beefs get sustained because the vast majority are sour grapes from people who have been locked up.

Try studying that professor.

Fucking intellectuals.

He did moron. The reason "beefs" don't get sustained is because OPS rubber stamps even the criminal activity by police officers, like the fifty some odd complaints against JF. Hear about the twelve year olds whomped by RS, DB, and of course, JF (not SOS)? You will. Hey moron, when cops knock the brains out of twelve year old boys and get away with it, the grape is not sour, its a golden raisin...

-----------------------------------

Well I am glad to hear you are an authority on the subject.

You work for OPS I take it? You must have some sort of experience here to talk to brazenly.

Get back to work, your lunchbreak at the ACLU is almost up.

Jackass.

I love the way some of you would invalidate someone's whole life because you don't like them. Who died and made any of you God? Everyone makes a mistake now and then, some mistakes are worse than others, some are made out of desperation or fear, those are the ones which are more excusable than those made out of greed, revenge, racism or misogyny. None of us know enough about the Cathy Dubek incident to judge her and from what I see and hear, this Rossi aint no angel. If the evidence in this case is so conclusive, why did it take the dept. until Thurs. to strip her and why did Gene Roy try and dismiss the incident, if he did? This would be a good time to suspend judgment!

Stripped? for "supposedly" standing by? I don't think this new policy they were talking about covered that. I thought this new policy meant if there is "strong" evidence that you are guilty of a crime, you can be stripped before the investigation is completed. This is BullShit!!!
You get stripped as soon as you're accused???

4/27/2007 03:47:00 PM

There was no supposed about it-- theres a TAPE. And yes-- I AM a cop and yes I DO feel an officer that had anything to do with anything similar to something like this SHOULD be stripped. They should have a benefit at Jefferson tap and have the love Karolina from Short Stop bartend-- that way EVERYONE wins!! Giggidy!

At least Diann Burns did briefly state at the start of the segment that the majority of police officers are honest and hard-working and that a small percentage are involved in these recent scandals----------that's a little something at least

Hey to the officer that ask is 376 overflowing, you are so right. More Sgts without police powers than Sgts with. Unindicted co-conspirators, rumored to be wired, and a C/O who just ran over Lt.Moy to keep his full-duty, half a day working blowjob queen there. I left in Dec. 06 and I'm busy writting my book. Don't they send people to jail for getting paid to go to work, but spend 2-4 hrs there.
