Careful Please

Sometime Wednesday afternoon, an Admin Fax came out that stated officers shouldn't be riding on the backs of squadrols in any circumstances. We also saw a couple comments that referenced an incident that probably led to the fax being issued.

Hopefully, the officers involved recover fully. This could have been way worse than it was.

Take away the squadrols, with all the new cage cars you don't need them anymore. DOA's are now removed by a private service. Mentals can go by ambulance. If there is a shortage of cars we can use bicycles for beat patrol.

Your a real asshole. Two of our own were hurt trying to respond to a 10-1. I don't agree with them jumping on the back of a squadrol but atleast they were tryingto get over and help a fellow officer. So by saying they are do-nothings, you are an ass. I hope they both come out of this ok.

While the actions of that officer falling off the back of the squadrol was foolhardy at best, the underlying fact of the matter is why.....Why were they put in that position to begin with...The simple answer is they had no car to respond, because some jerkoff from downtown and the moronic Commander of the 018th District took them away because of the actions of 1 or 2 PO's caught sleeping on the midnights....But as usual, the powers to be cure for the headache, cut off the head instead of just disiplining the parties involved...

You are all assholes. It was a 10-1 from because of the brain trust who decided CHA Special should be on foot in 2 man teams. The officer, though not too smart, was trying to do the right thing and get to the building to help out the officers getting jumped by the group of animals. She jumped on the back of a wagon instead of running the 3 blocks. The coppers driving didn't know and she got tossed and seriously injured. Keep badmouthing people you fucking do nothing jagoffs. What the fuck has this job become. A bunch of lazy do nothing cry babies who have nothing better to do than rip on people. Fuck all of you bitches!

Suppposedly they were responding to a call for assistance by another officer. They hopped on the back of the wagon but the driver had no idea they were back there.

It was only a matter of time before someone got hurt due to this insane policy.

As before, S. G. will not take a hit for something that happened under his command.

Firefighters haven't been riding on the back steps of engines or trucks for over twenty years.

First of all I hope the officers recover but from what I hear, it involves broken bones, bad bruises and maybe even a bad head injury...

Blame falls 1/2 on the dept for taking away the officers car and leaving them on foot in the jets, not able to respond as they should to a copper in distress 4 blocks away.

Other 1/2 blame is on the coppers. Are you crazy jumping onto the outside of the wagon with nothing to hold onto. Why not just open one of the two doors and sit inside for your short ride 4 blocks away to the call or 10-1.

I have to disagree with you on this. While I am no fan of the BS that this department does, and how it has become, I find it hard to blame it on this guy. From what I heard, he is a stroke, but even it that is true; he is not to blame for this.

This was just not the smart thing to do by the PO's. I think there is know other way to look at this. You can say a whole lot of "what if" but bottom line, IMO, this was dumb.

First, let's hope that they both recover. Dumb or not, they did get injured. Just as your auto insurance/home insurance has to cover stupidity - so too does the department. If you leave the keys in the car and the car open and running, then it is stolen – you still get covered.

Second, let us hope that this does not affect those of you that work special, if this was the case with these two PO's. It would be a blow to the many PO’s who work this gig that need the money to pay for tuition, home payments, and use it for their going out money.

Finally, let us hope that nobody else gets hurt doing something so dumb like this again.

I also hope that there is no litigation that comes from this. I think that is a huge problem in society right now, and something deserving of its own thread. Too many people are looking for the quick buck and fail to place the blame on where it belongs – with themselves.

This was not the mistake or fault of anybody but the two PO’s that did it.

5/31/2007 06:08:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The fact remains the PO was just trying to do her job, responsing to a job,(I understand it was in progress) she had no car because the commander of 18 took away all the vehicles for CHA. Granted the PO wasnt too smart but if the vehicles stayed none of this would have ever happened. Hope the PO is ok.

Hope the PO's make a speedy recovery and I'm sorry to be the black sheep here but what they did was just plain dumb. Open the door and pile inside, it's that simple. And as far as the crime being down in the Greens, that's because the majority of the buildings are either gone, vacant or half vacant not because of special employment.

Blame lays only with the officers that did this stupid stunt. I've said it numerous times - if you don't want to make 50-60 an hour - don't work it. It is very simple. I also believe cars should be used, but they aren't so I made a decision NOT to work it. These are FOOT posts....that means you stay there. Take a look at the back of a wagon - there is nowhere to hold on. What were they thinking? But don't bounce the blame for this stupid decision up - keep it where it belongs - with the officers.

Where in the description of this blog does it say, come here for profanity? People come here for a discussion of department related incidents and policies.
There are many ways to express how you feel without using profanity and attacking each other because they have a different opinion. This is for the most part an open forum and sadly people seem to thrive on name calling and saying things about others that they wouldnt say in person. Profanity and name calling does not add strength to your opinion. It de-values it because it shows a lack of maturity and profesionalism.
It should be us (police) against them (the bad guys). Too much effort is wasted on in-fighting and dividing us further by race, geography, unit, district, watch, etc. Sometimes people get hurt or killed on this job doing some pretty questionable things, but as long as their heart was in the right place they deserve support. I think we would all be alot better off if we all tried to respect each other a little more.

Hate to be the Monday morning quarterback here, but....jumping on the back of a squadrol was just poor judgement. Period.
No more squads for special? Don't blame 1800. Anyone who has worked special should know the truth...WE
messed that up. Plain and simple. If WE were doing OUR jobs properly, there would be cars, so quit complaining! We've been given new marching orders for time and a half...it's either worth it, or NOT. The Dept. is tired of paying out big bucks AND having to beg the guys and gals to do the job right. Sgts. today don't really want to supervise. If they had been doing their jobs, the officers would have been where they were supposed to, and the pulling of the squads would never have happened. Just call it the Domino effect of laziness. And Georges? It's true he has about as much personal warmth and personality as a piece of paper, and one can only wonder how in the hell Cline came to pick him, but he's THERE (he reminds me of another previous cmdr of 018, Griffin; remember he was an impersonal bastard also? He didn't last long before he packed it in!). No one remains as the Cmdr. of 018 long, although I don't see someone with such an extreme lack of personality having that much upper movement through the CPD, if that's any consolation to anyone assigned to 018.

6/01/2007 04:59:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why are some of you blaming the Cmndr? He didn't tell those Officers to jump on the back of the truck. And whats the big deal about no cars? You can't drive a car to the 10th floor of a project building can you? And isn't that where your supposed to be, inside the building? I think the blame is with those coppers that signed up and expected to just ride around all day without doing anything. I remember one time (actually more than one time) when I got into the car while working Special Employment in the Green and my partner who insisted on driving, then proceeded to drive around the perimeter of the jets never even entertaining the idea of actually driving into the complex or walking into a building. Had I then not insisted on driving for the remainder of the tour we probably would have never entered a building once during those tours. And that seemed to be par for the course. Not always, but more often than not.

Blame this one on the C/O who took away the cars. To take available cars away is the equivilent of taking people off the street. If there is a problem with poeple sleeping, being off post, etc. then it is up to the Sgt.s and Lt.s to solve that problem, or an inspector to write them up. If an officer gets a little heavy handed with a prisoner or an arrestee do you take away his baton or asp? No, because that would reduce his effectiveness on the street and put his fellow officers at risk. It is the same case with the cars. They are needed to do the job safely and effectively, and taking them away puts other officers at risk. Of course none of this common sense means anything to the current boss in down there. This is coming from a guy who has never worked a hard day in his life and has been taken care of by Mauer and the old boys his entire career. He can't relate to a guy with four kids in private who needs one or two days of special to make ends meet, he has never had to hustle a little as a P.O.

I wish I had kissed ass a little earlier in my career and been one of the drinking buddies in the old boys club. Maybe some test answers would have come my way. Oh well, I will continue to stand in the stairwells while the Peter Principle continues to hold true. Maybe the next C/O will give us the cars back, but if the trend holds true, that will be the current C/O of the Marine Unit so not much will change, same guy different name.

Got your challenge coin Georgie Boy?

I have. Every district should have at least one wagon working on all three watches. Unfortunately with manpower being what it is, we very seldom have a squadrol up and available. Maybe they don't do much, but when you need them, sometimes you really need them, and they are great to have.

You idiots are blaming the officers. It was a mistake, but we all make them. You are no better than the media, how about the fact the animals in that shithole Cabrini once again attacked the police. I say give them an apartment complex in Plainfield and give each a plasma t.v. All problems will be solved.

When a northside FOP Unit Rep tried to talk to the 018 District Commander with a legitimate saftety issue to try to suggest a minor realignment of personnel that would make backup closer in a pinch the 018 D/C would not even talk to the rep, he responded through a flunky in the office.

The flunky relayed the commander's response: "The CHA Special Employment is a VOLUNTARY program. PO's don't have to work it if they don't like the conditions."

While strictly speaking this is true it shows a remarkable lack of concern for officer safety by this 37 year old wonder boy.

GUIDE YOURSELVES ACCORDINGLY.

I agree totally with a previous post: Start locking people up and get in the station for half the shift. Preferably, lock someone up 20 minutes before checkoff so you can get another hour or two of overtime.

Think like an old timer just a bit, those guys knew a thng or two. Arrests equals time out of the buildings plus overtime plus court time.

Ya know, everyone is playing the blame game as to how the coppers screwed it up for themselves by being off post, 2 miles away on lunch, sleeping, etc. BUT Does this program have NO supervisors assigned to it?
Is it not the sergeants job to ensure we are doing the right thing? Where are/were they? Typical CPD, PO's will screw it up but there is never a supervisor around who will take any blame for not overseeing his troops.

Hope the PO's are OK !

Ettore DiVito doesn't count. He just didn't want to retire, and was eventually shoved out the door.
Holding out for something else, and he was all but forgotten there.
Sad.

Do you really think crime is down in the Greens because of Special Employment?? Maybe it has to do with knocking them down and yuppies moving in the hood.

"Any inside info about the cop from 14 that had a warrant? Heard it might be another beating case inside another bar."

I believe it was a PPO who got into a domestic and she got an order of protection and a warrant against him.

Worked the Greens the other day...the yuppies around the hood are not very happy. The visability of the squad cars around CHA gave them a sense of security. They're wondering what fool took them away. Being a urban pioneer was ok when the police was around...now they're not to sure.

The copper from 014 who was arrested for the warrant was a douchebag in the academy who would tell his classmates that he was the star point guard for the 2000 Michigan State Spartans. I don't think he knew that they won the national championship that year. They guy cheated on his wife every chance he got. Don't ever believe a word he ever says.

We should put blame on the bosses who decided to take the cars away and put fellow officers at risk. These officers were responding to a 10-1 it is unfortunate that this happened and I hope they recover. To the boss who decided to take cars away deal with the 1 or 2 officers that are the problem dont punish everyone because shit like this should have never have happened.
