6,700 Guns

At last, children can play in the parks without fear, citizens can ride through Englewood with their car doors unlocked and the windows down, coppers in 015 and 011 can put away the bullet proof vests and relax in the warm summer air.

If there is a single homicide in the city from this point forward, we can only hope that Pfleger, Jackson and Daley all commit hari-kari.

A question or two though:
  • Do these $100 gift cards have a 6 month expiration like we heard the last set did?
  • What exactly is the supplier of the gift cards getting out of this anyway? For $670,000 it seems a bit steep in terms of advertising. Or is the city refunding part of the money for every homicide or future gun confiscation that takes place? What's the angle?

I'm sure the total of 6,700 guns includes the replica pistols, air rifles and bb guns recovered as well. The total is bogus, just to boost numbers for the media.

Even in the busiest of years, we (the Department) have only recovered 15,000 or so guns in a year, including several turn-in events like this if my memory serves correctly. God I hate these fucking turn-ins, only the people looking to obey the law in the first place are seeking to turn them in at events.

At the location we turned in a gun at they ran out of cards at about 75 and had to give rain checks for next Saturday. Before you bitch about it, it was a gun no longer needed in the household and I may as well get the c-note.

Hey POs! Need a P/T Job?

Over the course of the next year, think about this... when you still catch Ray-Ray running around with Airsoft/BB guns and take it from him, don't throw it away! You just threw away $10.00! Save them up over the course of the year, then send a friend to a turn in event! Cha-ching, cha-ching!

DC was between the proverbial rock and a hard place. If they didn't appeal the Parker decision, they had to let non-criminals have handguns. If they appeal and lose, it could be the beginning of the end for gun control in the United States. If I had to bet, I'd say that some day Mayor Fenty is going to be remembered as the man who ended gun control.

As for Chicago, let me paraphrase Satchell Page: "Don't look behind you Daley, something might be gaining on you... the 2nd Amendment."

Now that doesn't mean that Daley will obey the law or the US Constitution. What it DOES mean is that the Chicago FOP better take lesson from the Cleveland FOP which instructed its members to NOT enforce Cleveland's preempted so-called "assault weapon ban", in DIRECT contradiction of Mayor Frank Jackson's orders. The alternative is for Chicago cops to get themselves in the same sort of bind that the Norfolk, VA PD got themselves into by brutally enforcing a facially invalid preempted gun ban. Now, the city and individual officers face punishing lawsuits from their victim. And it's starting to look like the City of Norfolk is planning to throw those cops under the bus in a [futile] attempt to minimize its own exposure.

I would bet that most of the turn in's were junk to begin with, however I also bet that some got swindled. Some firearms are worth thousands of dollars and I cringe when I see an original Colt from the 1800's gets turned in.Look it up on the internet and you would be supprised. To think that you could have sold the gun for $3,000.+ and only got a $100. gift card. That in itself should be a crime, in fact it is, it's called stealing if the city didn't tell people what they actually had. Just make beleive the gun was an antique Tiffany lamp and the city gave you $100. for it,now wouldn't you feel ripped off?

I made a tidy $240 profit from the 3 I turned in, bought them for $20 each at a gun show and sold them for $100! Not sure if they worked or not, but I certainly made a profit! Can't wait for the next turn in.........

The vast majority of the guns turned in at my assigned location were garbage. Pieces of guns, non-functioning rust buckets. But hey a C-note is a C-note. By the way, my location took in 267 real guns and 40 replica/bb guns. Praise father Phleger.

Supply and demand people, basic economics.

REMBER PRIVATE COMPANIES DONT FALL UNDER THE SHAKMAN DECREE. WHY DO YOU THINK ALL OF DALEY X CHIEFS OF STAFF SNITCH ON HIM WHEN HE FIRES THEM.

SO THE MONEY FOR THE GUNS IS CHICKEN FEED. FIND THE COMPANY AND FIND OUT WHAT THEY HAVE PLANNED FOR 3-5 YEARS DOWN THE LINE. MIGHT BE FREE CITY LAND , ZONING, EMINENT DOMAIN REQUEST, TAX BREAK OR EVEN A LAW TO BE CHANGED.

I can't stand the headline grabbing race hustlers either and question their motives at every turn. I thought the turn-ins were bullshit, too.

But let me just ask you this question -- let's say one in ten of the guns turned in over the weekend could be described as legitimate, working weapons that came from Chicago addresses and were not far from the reach of a kid or a gangbanger?

Then, would you be able to muster up enough gratitude to thank those 670 people who decided to turn the gun in, no matter the motive?

You're right to question where the $670,000 comes from. Legit question.

But why not at least consider the idea that, maybe, just maybe, these things are not that bad afterall. What harm do these gun turn ins have? Why are they not a good idea?
All I am saying is that

The gang-bangers show up with a bunch of "tired" (non-working) guns. You know electrical tape on the old broken handgrip, so much rust that it can only be used to strike somebody across the head with, and not fired etc. Guns that look like they've been buried in the ground for decades.

Then they get prepaid credit cards in return for the turned in junk. Now they can turn those into cash and BUY brand-new guns and bring them into the city to use in their criminal enterprise.

The City that works....Bah!

Bogus? How about the picture in Sunday's Sun Times with Sgt. Plotke showing Mac 11's Uzi's and Tec 9's? This picture was taken at either the training academy or area 5. Do they really think that we'd believe that all those weapons were turned in for a 100 debit card? Or how about when those firearms were really taken into custody? I find it incredulous that they can run that program till 1600, run them down there after inventorying them and laying them out for a photo op that is done in time to get the story to press by 1800 hrs.

Sounds like Daley's media bullshit to me....

Let me clarify, the total of guns collected is 6,176, the total of replica weapons and bb guns is 678.

Why is it that you have to find the negative in anything. One gun removed from the street has the potential to save a coppers life. I am very happy that many were removed from the street, homes, cellars, wherever. The point was to get the city involved to take some action instead of always pointing in the direction of the police and saying it was our fault. Also, corporations and city businesses paid the bill you moron!

I worked at one of the busiest locations. You guys were mis-informed. We got a lot of parents turning in guns and elderly people that just wanted the guns out of their house. They had grandkids, etc. We got 27 sawed off shot guns, 4 uzi's, 3 AK's, about 60 9 mm, 12 with the bannana clip, at least 6 guns that I would have gave a grand for, and a few that were shit.

Overall it did the city and citizens some good, it let them feel like they were doing something and gave 011 tact one less gun to chase down.

SCC,
You missed one really huge problem with this gun turnin.

What occurs when a gun is ballistically tested and it was used in a homicide or aggravated battery?

How does this affect the chain of evidence?

What protocols are in place to trace the weapon back to the source of origin or to the offender?

What is the timeframe to test 6,700 weapons?

What if a weapon is destroyed prior to a criminal trial and the defense asserts their right to independent ballistic testing?

**$10 for replica guns. Nada for starter pistols/toys.
No matter what gun got turned in, it's one that can't be stolen in a burglary and used out in the street. The replicas can prevent someone getting killed by Us.
It is a good cause, but the Young Guns out there didn't turn theirs in. At my location I could honestly say there were less than 10 questionable people that turned in a weapon out of the 200+ that we got.

If you could read, you would know that bb and replica guns got a 10.00 mastercard. None of the cards can be used at a gunshop thanks to mastercard. Did you listen to the news, they told you that since you can't read, and all of the posters say the same thing. I know because my district still has 100 of them in our storage room.
