A Gun Used Properly

  • A store clerk on the West Side fought back against an alleged robber, shooting him in the head. Chicago police say Monday evening the suspect is in stable condition.
  • "He produced the weapon, announced the robbery," said Sgt. Rich Dowling of the Chicago Police Department. "The clerk produced the cash register, at which time he also produced a weapon, and he began firing at the offender."
Whoa! A gun used to prevent a crime! No wonder the media (a whole compliant parcel of the Daley anti gun machine) isn't shouting this story from the rooftops.

And as a completely amusing side note, get a load of the quotes in the story:
  • A man who identified himself as belonging to a local street gang, but declined to give his name, said he is a close friend of the man who was shot.

"He our friend. We be together every day," the man said. "Just so happened today we weren't with him.

When asked if he thought his friend was trying to rob the hardware store, the man said, "He might have. He might was. If he feel he was robbin' that store, he did what he did."
Uh huh. You weren't with him today. Of all days. Anybody catch the description of that lookout? Too bad when the clerk shot the robber in the head he didn't kill him. It would have been the perfect ending to the story.

So all life is sacred?? Tell me why a person who points a gun at you and demands your money should live? I suppose if you had a chance to save the world from WWII by killing Hitler....you would say just give him the world ...you can't replace his life.........Dummy

Yeah, the clerk was lucky this time. Chances are, if he had just handed over the money the guy would have left quietly. Then the clerk could go to the police, give them a description of the robber, show them any security videos, and pursue him via the LEGAL SYSTEM.

This clerk was VERY LUCKY that the perp didn't have a chance to shoot back. Bringing out a weapon in response to an already tense situation is always going to escalate the probability of something going very wrong. The clerk could have lost his life ... And for what? Defending a few hundred dollars? Not letting another person get the better of him? Not worth it, especially when a non-violent ending to the situation would have been otherwise probable.

If you rob a guy and then shoot and kill him...guess what, its harder for him to be a WITNESS against you!

The clerk did the right thing. IMO

It's a fucking shame the gun wasn't stuck in your face.

The sad part of this story is, one, the gunman wasn't shot dead and, two, the sippy-cup media is not reporting on how an armed citizen protected themself.

Funny, the media is reporting over and over cops shooting the 15 year-old shooter but they maintain a keep-your-asshole-tight-in-a-firefight reportage demeanor on the citizen protecting themself ( and the next victim or deceased) shooting.

Give the cashier a medal.

Respectfully,

An open letter to the Mayor, Governor and state representatives.

Dear Sirs,

With the recent shootings in the city and such atrocities such as Virginia Tech, the gun debate will perpetuate. Both supporters and opponents of tougher gun laws will undoubtedly present facts and statistics supporting their position. However there is just one fact, just one statistic that no one can refute: gun laws do not stop shootings.

I am a supporter of gun laws and regulation, and believe current laws were designed with the safety and future of our society in mind, but it is painfully obvious that they do not work. One can only look to England for the result of banning all guns, with little impact on crime. The examples are numerous on both sides, but point to the same conclusion: there is no gun law that prevents criminals from possessing guns, and these laws only serve to disarm the innocent. One could also look at the current state of illicit drug abuse and know that strict laws have no effect. Drugs are brought into this country through unprotected sections of our own borders, and so would guns.

Virginia Tech is a gun free zone, but it did not stop Cho Seung-Hui from killing 32 fellow students. How many lives could have been saved if just one of those students was carrying a firearm that day? In 2002, two armed students at Appalachian State University subdued a fellow student who had already killed 3 others. How many deaths were prevented that day, how many were saved because someone was carrying a gun should be the question you ask yourselves. There is no law, and there is nothing that could be said or done to stop someone who is intent on killing people, nothing short of the victims defending themselves. No one wants criminals or mentally ill to have guns, but there is nothing that can stop them, so why take away the ability to defend oneself?

Criminals are just that, criminals. By definition they do not obey laws, and certainly do not obey gun laws. Not to mention what insane people are capable of. I can pick up the news paper on any given day and read of a shooting, and in a city where gun possession is nearly impossible. But this impossibility only exists for the law-abiding citizens of this city who are left defenseless. Criminals are allowed to poison their neighborhoods with drugs, possess guns, and endanger everyone around them with their violence. Criminals break the law with impunity while productive members of society are paying for their crimes, often with their lives.

I am writing to inform you of my support for HB1304, and asking you for your support in allowing honest, respectable members of society a fighting chance to defend themselves and their families. Please join the other 48 states that honor a citizen’s right to keep and bear arms. Allow me to protect myself and my family.

Banning guns only ensures that criminals have them, and that victims stay helpless.

How sanctimonious of you. Do you have any other pseudo-intelligent liberal rhetoric to enlighten us with?

That would make sense if the life to be saved was worth saving. Unfortunately for him, the robber forfeited his life by using a deadly weapon, and the clerk had every right and acted within the law to kill him.

If the offender shot and killed the clerk would you be so quick to talk about the sanctity of life? Or would you make excuses for the offender and blame society?

Stop applying childish emotionalism to adult situations and come to the realization that; the offender's life is worth less than the clerk and his money; that there is a difference between murder and killing; and when faced with deadly force we all have the God given right to protect ourselves.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Sure, because nobody ever kills any witnesses to their crime after they get what they want. Why not just give the offender a hug before he leaves and say to him while choking back your tears "Its ok *sniff*, I understand, *sniff, sniff* I blame society, not you". You are the kind of person we hate to have on a jury. There are bad people in this world and you obviously have not crossed paths with many. We get paid to try to keep that from happening and keep you safe but bleeding heart liberals like yourself have made that near impossible. There are people in this world who are career criminals who do not want to work. If you dont give them free money, they will take it. But go ahead and keep blaming everything else but the individual and you will just encourage the behavior. So your time will come when the bad man turns to you as his prey and hopefully for you, your criminal will leave you alive. You might just get off with only a pistol whipping or a minor beating. And while your sitting in the ambulance with your head bandaged and covered in blood make sure to tell the officer that it was a misguided "human being" that did this, we could always use a good laugh.

"He should have just handed over the money..." Really?, Well I hope you never find yourself in a position to surrender to an armed criminal. I don't beleive in trusting a criminal with my life, I will draw and fire, if I get hit so be it but at least it was on my terms. This clerk did nothing wrong and should be seen as an example of how a normal everyday citizen defended himself, saved his life and possibly others from an armed criminal. The BIG difference in the gun arguement is that liberals want to disarm everyone(except themselves), conservatives only want to disarm criminals without denying lawabiding citizens of their RIGHTS. As a police officer I do not fear an armed citizen, I fear an armed criminal but what is worse is a politician who will deny you your rights for your own good and make it sound so reasonable. There is NO SUBSTITUTE for a gun when needed at the time when needed. The politicians all have protection, armed body guards and I don't doubt many of them carry a weapon illegaly.Hypocrites all.

Doesn't "The American Rifleman" have a column called "The Armed Citizen" where events of self-defense with guns are noted?

I haven't read one for a while, so I don't know if it is still there.

Since someone mentioned a flamethrower and provided a youtube link, here is a link to a video of a car-mounted device designed to inhibit carjacking in South Africa.

http://edition.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/9812/11/flame.thrower.car/

If the link doesn't come through, google "south africa car flamethrower" it should be one of the first hits.
