Budget Shortfall Gets Bigger

  • “In fact, as we look toward 2009, we will meet the most challenging budget the city has faced in decades,” Chief Financial Officer Paul Volpe said as he released the preliminary budget estimates.
A property tax hike is off the table (allegedly), so expect higher user fees, fines, permits, stickers and other standbys. Oh yeah, lots of layoffs, too. But where the hell did they get this number?
  • Currently, the city employs 38,760 people. Volpe said that figure is nearly 2,900 fewer than in 1990, despite the addition of 1,000 officers to the Police Department.
1,000 officers? Over what period of time? 1,000 officers 18 years ago doesn't do us much good when we've had over 4,000 retirements over those same 18 years.

Let see what the part time aldermen do. Will they not except their pay raise. Maybe we can reduce them to 25, the do nothings. Why should the little guy pay for their stupidy. Get rid of the take home cars and the body guards "servants" that cost millions

why don't they just raise sales taxes some more, so maybe more people will go out of the city to shop.

A terrible tax concept would be lower the sales taxes to be the lowest in the region and maybe people would flood here to shop. Thus more people more money.

A few good ways to save City funds perhaps .....

... Reduce the seasonal changes of all planter boxes throughout the City.

... Stop sending out watering crews to water said plantings, especially during the afternoons when the water evaporates more quickly and traffic is already starting to be congested.

... Quit letting TOP BRASS retire, and then reemploy them as civilians at an exorbitant salary. If they wish to be reemployed start them off at the beginning scale. If their knowledge is so very invaluable pay them a consultant fee for a TEMPORARY amount of time. Consultant fees to run in direct correlation to private industry.

... Offer a BUY OUT for ALL city personnel (yes all, include TEACHERS, FIRE and POLICE) Offer buying up to 10years of age and years of service. There will be a mass exodus you can bet. Imagine the savings!!!!

... Lease out the Community Rooms in all new stations. The seniors can have a Bingo Day, Boy/Girl Scout meetings, the youngsters can have a craft day, bake sales, possibly a Sadie Hawkins dance, all in the safety of a Police Dist station with a requirement of having parents present on a proper kid/parent ratio .. no shootings expected there . . .

The person's/agencies who signed the lease are responsible for overseeing the entire event, and can be billed by the hour/day. Require them to leave a deposit in case of any mishaps. The possibilities are endless.

#1 Rosie was a go ger for victor reyes former patronage chief for daley, did nothing more than answer phones and be victor's personal valet and then sorich went to prison she shut up and was given this "plum" job not counting her cars and drivers and huge pension she will get only in daleyland! On topic maybe daley could get rid of the huge fleet of personal city vehicles he has stored over at the garage on 35h and shields, in the old garage, vans, cars, trucks all for his personal services, and what about all his bodyguards how many does he need? Hey eddie burke how about 1 driver not a driver and passenger so you can get free parking and have the door opened for yourself! All D-3 pay for being a valet! Maybe eddie your finance chairman how about a couple of 15K a year lackeys to drive you around? Show how you save money! Are you not the same finance committee chairman who has denied many officers mediacl care as when on duty your lackeys say "sorry not iod", but of course when clout calls you it is all ok, when we do not need fop lawyers to fight for us! Why does the treasuer have a fleet of D-3 drivers who is the treasurer? Why did the new city clerk get rid of all drivers and drives himself like a real man who knows how to drive? Maybe the rest should take Delvalles example!!!

Smoke and mirrors. Like they did'nt see this comming? Forget our bullshit 4% raises, we need like 10% just to stay afloat in this city. Take those big purchases outside the city and the county. Stop driving your SUV unless you have no choice. We are headed for tough times and no one gives a shit. Middle class works too many ours to protest, section 8 gets what they want and the wealthy "yuppies" too drunk to care and eventually move out of the city. And don't bet on the FEDS to clean up the city, they follow an agenda too.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL.

How many asst commissioners and deputy directors in O'Hare modernaziation program? Everyone has a fancy title and the proper connections to city hall. And we wonder why the actual cost is over budget? has any major project for the city ever met the original budget? I can only imagine the contracts for the olympics.

Isn't it true that the financial affairs of the city, by law, have to be entirely transparent? Otherwise, where's the accountability?

Police and citizens alike should surround city hall and demand Daley's resignation. He'll hole up there, until we set up camp outside in the streets. He has to come out sometime. If he hasn't resigned by then, we can lynch him from a light pole.

You think I'm kidding. It would work, but it'd take cooperation of everyone, or at least a good majority.

Daley could start by savibg the city the more than TWO MILLION it takse to provide himself and his family with armed police drivers, guards, go-fers, etc.

BTW. Anybody notice that in the last six months or so Dealey looks like he's really hitting the bottle.
He's a bad enough mayor sober, imagine that clown drunk!

And don't forget about all of the Daley-appointed positions in this city. For example, the commissioners at the board of elections. These are high-powered attorneys with their own law firms, and making a little extra cash (6 figures??) on the side to attend a few Board of Election meetings a year. And they also get perks like expense accounts and $1800/month car allowances! I'd love to know how many more Daley-appointees there are out there. And there's nothing we can do about it. We don't even get to vote for these folks.

I think the mayor and city council are not measuring up. But of course the dregs of society keep voting themselves a pay raise. Hopefully soon this buisness class ( the only class that produces anything ) will rise up like in 1776. I can gaurentee you this cop will be on the side of the rebels.

The Noon news on channel 9 stated that Mayor Daley may have to lay off CPD, and CFD. He said there would also be a hiring freeze. FYI...Hang on to your shorts. I guess being 3500 officers short is only the beginning. Accrue all the time due you can, but you will never use it.
Can the FOP bring a residency clause up during this contracr negotiation? I no longer feel safe in this city.....

Asshole Daley wants to put on the table the possibility of laying off Police Officers. We're already short around 3,000. We're overworked, overwhelmed, crime is through the roof and he wants to even speak the phrase "lay off cops". what an idiot. he needs to stop lining his pockets with all that stolen money, he needs to stop spending hundreds of millions of dollars each year on useless stupid ass stuff in the city and begin to prioritize beginning with public safety. where's our contract "again", where's our retro pay? what about cost of living raise to boot? do we have a union?

How about taking the cars and drivers from the exempts!

That would save at least a million!

Let them drive their own cars with their own gas to pick up the car they use during their tour!

Instead they will cut the bare necessities from the rank and file.

By far the biggest reason for the budget shortfall is the "daley way" politics and his overspending. My opinion is that the Bean is the biggest waste of money in U.S. history, and to top it off, it went way over budget along with millenium park. This guy has his hands in everyone's pocket and no one outside the city limits can see this ? We will get a contract only when the king decides that he has fucked us over enough and has found another group of people that he can mess with. I really hope he drops dead soon. To wish another person dead may sound mean, but, this is what he thinks of us...so tough shit daley ! Keep up the revenue shortage, it may kill him yet.

Daley picked a winner in Volpe, an expert at lying through his teeth.

It's not the lies they tell you that kills you, it's the omissions of the truths.
