Your New Best Friend

This or something similar.

If you're going to be "evaluated," you better make a diary or series of notes about backlogs or on-view problems you may encounter during the tour. Any "CAPS related" activity? Log it. Assist a citizen, even if it's giving directions, log it. That station run for the desk? On-line training? Log it all. And this goes for Supervisors, too. Ride on jobs? Run missions? CAPS paper (if it still exists)? Log everything. Because we think it's about to get stupid with accounting for your hours and questions about why you didn't do anything "proactive" during the tour.

"Proactive" = "$$$ for Daley." Learn this equation - it may save you a lot of heartache.

Just make sure your log is accurate and truthful. This is an outstanding idea, but don't fudge it or it won't mean a thing. Good idea.

I agree SCC.

Notes have saved my but a few times over the last few months of checking off with zeros across the board.

Log the event numbers, and how many case reports. Dont forget how long it took to get gas and a car wash.

Dont forget to add travel time. I log the time as it appears on the PDT till I clear.

Its amazing that some days Im up and clear for less than 2 hours.

I challenge the folks that are bean counting the shortages start taking a "REAL" look at the changes implemented by the department to make our JOBS easier - [hysterical laughter inserted here]

With AUTOMATION supposedly to make our lives easier, please have a computer EXPERT assess the situation.

An inventory - depending now if you have evidence, prisoners property - money separate; jewelry separate, other properties; arrest reports; processing juveniles at the JISC; AND if there are adults with juveniles transports, etc etc etc...

Things that used to take a heck of a lot less time to process now take sooooooooo much longer!!!!

Even a simple TVB of a suspended driver with officers having to run the abstracts to see if it need be upgraded. And if there is an upgrade possibility add more hours to a simple TVB, because paperwork has to be faxed, reviewed, and wait for approval or declination, then depending on that outcome process that arrest, or bond accordingly.

The department cannot have their cake and eat it too. Seemingly they implement all these NEW programs and thinking its the greatest thing since sliced bread, because they're not the schmucks having to use said programs.

Anyone with working-hand knowledge of the paper arrest, inventory can tell you the automated system DOES NOT make the processing easier, but makes it longer. And GOD FORBID the system goes down. OH, and it does more than it ever should, or would be thought to. The only people the automated system helped are whomever holds the PAPER supply contract with the city.

Then take a good long look at the real statistics; population has increased, neighborhoods have diversified, and yet no changes implemented to change boundaries, evenly distribute resources, or even to take these things into accounting.

Some dists are the size of a pea, while others are the size of a watermelon. Each with the same amount of manpower, all with a varying amount of calls for service

do the math people .. 1 + 1 equals 1200 to the city; obviously, because they keep piling on the various "NEW IMPLEMENTATIONS" but never accommodate the adjustments.

Every action has a reaction, and now they're feeling the reactions of their inability to take the necessary actions when they're "developing new programs, and processes' " without ever having considered the consequences of "breaking the camels back".

Each officer is only one person, and no matter how they chalk it up, keep piling it on without changes, or the system has got to buckle somewhere at sometime.

ADD INJURY TO INSULT; they're asking us to review and vote on changes made to new vehicles. THEY NEVER ASK OUR OPINION WHEN IT MATTERS, HOW NICE OF THEM TO CONSIDER OUR OPINION ON MATTERS OF SUCH UN-IMPORTANCE.

...

Now I guess we all know how that little dutch boy felt!!!!!!

Actually, it's getting better and better.

The idiots are continuing to come up with new reasons for the working patrol officers to unite.

The worse they try to make it, the greater the impetus to unite in opposition to the nonsense.

Weis is turning out to be a great motivator, of the opposite of his intentions.

Haaaa Haaaaaaa!

Keep it up Patrolmen! The exempt pukes are getting desperate! What's new is the same old failed bullshit that last saw the light of day more than 10 years ago...
bullshit that was illegal, unethical, subjective and rife with favoritism & bias.

Do EVERYTHING to protect yourselves, band together and retain the services of labor lawyers not beholden to F(L)OP... Scout around and find a good P.I. firm too, willing to bet if 5, 10 or 20 officers at a pop did this we won't have to wait long before some exempt or supervisor says/does something stupid & or illegal... it's coming and I for one would love to see Patrolmen get paid and exempts take time/get fired/pay punitive damages...

Keep a log of EVERYTHING A SUPERVISOR SAYS OR DIRECTS TOWARD YOU! Do not under any circumstances "step into the interview room for a minute" for a talk with ANY member of management... it gives them too much of a chance to say/do something unprofessional... keep it in the open with plenty of witnesses. Get a mini digital recorder to back up your written notes/log after an incident just occurred...

Like I said, the exempt pukes are scared & pissed... the only power they have are hollow threats... wanna see lunch receipts, wanna intrude on your personal life, wanna interfere with your right & DUTY to other work when your 8.5 is done, your right and duty to put bread on the table, clothes on your kids backs and send them to the best schools you can afford and keep your 10 year old heap running and the mortgage paid...

and as a pre-emptive strike against trolls/anon. bosses posting stupid shit about "live within your means," a hearty fuck you to all you shakey, underperforming, sorry assed shit sticks!

Now... J-Fart, how about looking at your thieving, home wrecking, baby making, disease spreading, drunk driving-department vehicle wrecking, double dipping, dope running, narcolepsy afflicted exempt staff?? Like a bunch of old hoes standing around the fire barrel crying about getting no respect in spite of wearing clean underwear...

Reform begins at the TOP!
You reap what you sow...

Fuck you and your evaluation!

I can't be fired for writing one parker a day on a junk car that the city can't collect $$$ on, there's your activity J-Fed and Daley!

Stick your evaluations up your ass!

They don't mean shit!

You want to get ahead on this Police Dept. there are only two ways:

1. Get on your knees and start sucking, blowing, take it in the ass, or any other sexual deviation and fetish of every boss out here!

2. Study your ass off on all promotional test, make it in the top 2% to be promoted. That way you can walk around with your head up high and tell the bosses to go fuck themselves because you don't owe anyone anything!

I'll do number 2 and stick your evaluations where the sun don't shine!

The old performance rating system was a true joke. It did have one kicker though...

if your rating went below a certain point (forgot what it was, though it was fairly low) you were no longer eligible to receive your step raise until your rating improved.

So they may not be able to move you but they may be able to prevent you from getting your step raise.

Excellent Post Advice !

This is what I've been saying about being smart and CYA.

Document everything. With today's computers it's easy.

Don't forget to include witness names etc. the Fed'a are great for collaborating support.

Also include date, time, location, and reason for (whatever).

Interrupted at lunch ? Add it on.
Backed up at gas pump. Add it on,
Check those beat cars: spares, jack, jack handle, all lights, signals, under seats, emergency equipment...I say down all units that are un-safe for any reason.
Every part on a vehicle is there for a manufacturer's requirement, usually safety.Document the time down and don't forget to check the vehicle log ! Fill it out.

I know it sounds crazy but it's where you've been backed...into the FBI corner.

Be smart, Protect your families & friends. RIP Soto.

SCC, you know damn well a whole bunch of us can't account for a full tour of duty. This has been a long time coming, with 90 minute domestics with no report or arrest,
30/40 minute 14P/14N burglar alarms, even 1 hr. gocrs'/auto theft/recoveries/hospitalizations, etc. No one is being asked to run themselves into the ground, but the amt of time spent on "routine" paper jobs in which only the required case report is being submitted is outrageous. Field supervisors need to step it up, and that includes the field Lts. too.

As a long term supervisor I often advised the troops to document everything. Each and every one that I told to file a grievance won that grievance if they documented. Your note book idea is excellent. The IRS will accept "diary" type entries for expenses, etc., and if they will anyone will.

Holy LOG This Batman!!!

Don't forget to log an order by any supervisor who asks for "activity."

Make sure your notes are very detailed; dates, times, locations, record witnesses, threats or strange repercussions associated with not full filling an illegal quota.

If you violate a citizens rights for the purpose of full filling a direct order to meet a quota imposed on YOU then your opening yourself up to a Federal civil rights law suit as well as criminal charges for willful and wanton conduct on your part.

Protect yourself from idiot bosses who only want to look good at your expense.

If necessary seek an attorney who specializes in hostile work environment law suits for guidance.

i think the idea for the digital recorder is a good one... you can leave verbal notes for yourself of any adversarial supervisory/exempt member encounter to assist your recollection when you write your notes/log at the end of the day. it is not a violation of the eavsdropping statute to do so...

...as for you 8/14/08 08:02AM,
it isn't paranoia, it's called having attended the CPD school of hard knocks and taking note of the lessons learned. you, sir/ma'am need a refresher in reading and comprehension. nowhere in the post in question was it inferred that conversation be surreptiously recorded... you no doubt are a merit management aspirant... pretend this was a question on a promotional exam, DON"T read into it ok? who's paranoid now? I guarantee you that if those two showed up at any roll call, they would look better than at least 60% of the people who are standing at attention with colored t shirt protruding through their uniform shirts, unshined shoes, or shoes that are even up to code, filthy, ill fitting vest covers (some being so worn they don't even allow the kevlar panels to actually protect the protions of their overgrown bodies that need the most protection), pants with holes, etc. In the big scheme of things, how the scrambled eggs appear on their hats matters very little.
