"I think you are making a horrible, horrible mistake that could end up costing you your life," Cook County Circuit Judge Thomas Gainer Jr. said, his eyes locked on Potts. "Do you understand that?"
"Yes, I do," said Potts, who was seeking permission today to represent himself in his trial on charges he kidnapped and killed ex-girlfriend Nailah Franklin in September 2007.
- Potts has no legal experience but told the judge he has access to the Cook County Jail's law library one hour a week and has been studying up for his case. Gainer compared Potts' plan to defend himself to reading "Chess for Dummies" a couple of times before playing Garry Kasparov.
We think Potts is ready for the big show. And we only hope that he inspires future legions of idiots to undertake their own defenses, thereby rendering tens of thousands of criminal defense lawyers obsolete, unemployed and forced to find gainful employment as ditch diggers and prostitutes.

Gainer is just another dirtbag judge. Judges always want defendants to have private attorneys to keep there buddies in business.
Misdemeanor and traffic court are perfect examples. Most cases in these courts can be plead without a defense attorney, but judges always strong arm people to hire an attorney. These aren't death penalty cases so there's no chance of an appeal. It's strictly the old boys network keeping lawyers in business.
Stop making arrests and let them starve. To quote a defense attorney i know "we're dieing in the city, you guys aren't bringing in the numbers"
This guy is an extreme example of a sociopath. Total disregard for anyone or thing other than themselves. This clown will always be "right".

An absolutely brilliant move by Mr. Potts. That way he can be quickly tried and convicted. Then he can demand a retrial on grounds he had an incompetent lawyer.
That trial ought to be really entertaining.
I work in A/4, where this homicide all started. Potts reminds me of the asshole who killed the stewardess in the 001st District few years ago. This case mirrors that one. Both are arrogant, self-centered pieces of shit.
They both had beautiful, successful women who worshiped the ground they walked on, but treated them like crap. This part I don't understand becasue both these guys are short, scrawny and ugly. Picture Jo-Lo's hubby, Marc Anthony. Anyhow, once these women found out that the man of their dreams was a whore and fraud, they left them.
This is when the trouble started. These guys didn't want their bullshit exposed to any other female, so they decided to get rid of these women. Their arrogance is what got them caught.
Regarding Potts, a friend of mine works in the jail and he said Potts treated every lawyer he had like shit. He'd yell at them, curse them, wouldn't listen to their advise. In the end, he'd fire them. I guess he thinks he's smarter than the average attorney.

He'll be in prison for the rest of his life, what does he care? All he wants to do is spend more of that time in the library than in general population.
All because Cook County judges don't have the balls to make a defendant PROVE that he qualifies for the public defender.
The only requirement to automatically get a PD in Cook County is that you are black or hispanic.
Watch what happens when a white guy says he doesn't have money and needs a PD? See if there isn't some kind of review of his finances before he gets one.

Actually that's a good point.
Usually murders are investigated by the jurisdiction where the body falls.
Except in the case of kidnappings or transported bodies, where the investigation is conducted by the jurisdiction where the murder occurred or the body was taken.

Oh boy, they could sell tickets to this trial on Stub Hub, this ought to be really entertaining. I hope someone goes there and brings a tape recorder to post for our entertainment.
I'd like to hear Potts doing his best Johnny Cochrane imitation. "If the shit don't fit, you gotta acquit!" That trial will be more fun than old Amos and Andy reruns.

Why don't you pull your head out of your ass and consider the fact that if the judge did not admonish the defendant like this, and the defendant was then convicted, then it is possible, maybe likely, that the conviction would be overturned. Are you really so ignorant that you cannot envision this scenario?
