Bad News
Scandal gets bigger. And it might not be over yet:
A Chicago Police scandal widened today with the unsealing of federal charges against an officer for allegedly taking bribes from tow-truck operators — at least the fourth cop ensnared in the corruption probe.
Officer Jimmie Akins is charged with attempted extortion for allegedly taking bribes in 2006 and 2007.
Akins accepted bribes to let tow-truck operators remove vehicles from accident scenes the officer was responsible for in the Near North District, according to an affidavit by FBI Agent Craig Henderson. Akins would use his cell phone to alert the tow truck operators about accidents, Henderson said.
According to the indictment, this was pretty blatant. Charging interest on missed payments and such sounds more like juice loans than anything else. Any idea when people are going to discover that this has all been tried by other goofs before them? And they were caught, too?

Akins should have been arrested years ago for the crimes he commited while working in 015. He was jagoff then, he was a jagoff while shaking down businesses in 018, and he finally got what he deserves.

I overheard white shirts laughing that a Detective Commander sent an e-mail via computer to all white shirts in a huge ERROR yesterday morning about an P.O. Carlos or Carl (not sure what unit or rank)
Supposedly the e-mail said “Carlos” was accepted as a merit pick and that the actual intended recipient of the e-mail should not worry because he would be the next selection for merit promotion. The funny thing is the message was sent to every white shirt, including the Superintendent, Dugan and O’Keefe, in error (Ooops!)
The sender, realizing the tragic error, then immediately sent every white shirt a message apologizing for the error and stated it was sent in error as the story goes.
My question is who is “Carlos”, does he really exist and how could anyone know he was the merit pick except for the merit board if the promotion lists are not out? Or wait and see if there is a Carlos or Carl on any promotion list in the near future close to this Commander and then question what this early e-mail is all about. Again not sure what type of promotion.
Also, how could anyone know who the merit picks for the future lists are already when there isn’t even a current list out for any rank?
This post should be no surprise because it was sent to hundreds of people and it sounds very suspicious to say the least. Any inquiry should raise a lot of questions to the purpose of this e-mail and from whom.
And will there be an investigation into whoever really sent the e-mail, as I’m sure the Commander of I.A.D. received it too and can’t claim ignorance.!
Can anyone confirm because I was told most of the white shirts received this e-mail in error???

Shortly after I got off probation I was assigned to work with Jimmie Akins one night. At the end of the night Sgt T.L. asked me how the night went. When I said that it went fine, he responded by saying "good, he's trouble."
I guess the city has known for a while that Akins was dirty but they couldn't make anything stick until recently. If it's true, GOOD RIDDANCE!

Shocked to hear this about Jimmie. I went to the academy with him. He was a very nice guy. My homeroom has had a rough go. I think this is the 2nd person arrested and the 4th fired
I have a question. I thought Akins got fired last year for appearing on TV in a CPD uniform without permission. I heard he had multiple warnings not to do this.
Not to nitpick but if Akins was already fired shouldn't the headline say. Former officer or Fired officer indicted??
When you have a large dept and political correctness run amock. The dept is going to get alot of bad headlines.
I hate the feds but hats off to them for this indictment. I would have to say alot of the old practices of the CPD need to die and stay buried forever. Go to court or get a side job if you need money. Quit double dipping!!!!
We make alot more money than most people in Cook County. We get extra money every year for uniforms. Those who wanted to become rich on the CPD should have looked elsewhere. This is shitty job that pays okay. I knew that going in. I only took the job for a pension. Should anyone want to complain about our pension issues I'm all ears for complaining. That mess is a disgrace.
I also worked with him once in 015, and watched him work there for many years, a piece of shit from day one, good riddance. And his nickname was petty homey.

It's time to get back down to basics. Uniform inspection everyday, weapon inspection everyday. Haircuts, no makeup, no perfume/cologne. No 6 inch fingernails..no shells in your fucking hair (Bo Derek does not work on this department). Hair that is too long must be tied up, and fit under your hat.(too many Predator people out there..(yeah I said it..hide those shitlocks!!) Men need to shave and some women too.. damn. Get uniforms that are not damaged, ripped, and for pete's sake have them fit your body (Not too tight, and not too dumpy looking).
It's time we held ourselves accountable for our professionalism and appearance..

There are assholes and crooks everywhere. The problem in CPD isn't that there some assholes. Instead, it's the same problem as in the community -- it's the "stop snitching" mentality.
I read it here when PO's say so and so was a "rat". Bullshit. Rats are great. We need more rats. The problem isn't the POS that does the crime, it's the departmental attitude that protects them. It's professional courtesy and its "you tried to screw a few of us in 015" (meaning, it's more important to me that you tried to screw us than the fact that you were a crooked cop in the first place.) It's merit promotion, but it's also the fact that noone will go on the record complaining about merit promotion, not even a group of retirees. WTF, do you think a real reporter can write that merit promotion is a big problem for effectiveness and for morale if no one on the inside is willing to say it publically? We should have a "merit promotion ball" where non-merit guys show up with bags over their heads for a mock celebration of the great merit promotees, organize something that helps the public understand rather than simply whining that it'll never change.
Fuck "why can't we all just be honest." The question is "why won't those of us who are honest turn on those who aren't and get them the hell out?
I think it is long overdue, the only thing I wish is that the FBI would of listened to Bubba when he was telling them about Akins. But hey you never know maybe they'll go reinterview Bubba in whatever Fed joint he is in.

Once again typical CPD, known bad cops, thieves etc. are "tolerated" for years before doing something so outrageous that an outside unit or agency arrests them. Then and only then does the CPD take notice. In Akin's case, the CPD never did take notice.
How about Chief of Detectives William Hanhardt? CPD never did the slightest thing to stop him, by all accounts Hanhardt was a thief his whole career, rising to Chief of Detectives and being part of a mob jewel theft ring.
Chief of Detectives William Hanhardt had a long police and criminal career, from 1953 until 1986, unfettered by any harassment by his very own Chicago Police Department.
Inspectors were of course too busy making sure blue shirts had their hats on and that they responded to jobs in a timely manner. But catch a high ranking associate of the mob working in their midst for 33 years? No way.
Does anyone really believe that Hanhardt operated in a vacuum, that no one around him knew what was going on? Of course they did. No one did anything.
CPD never did catch on, of course. It was the FBI and Patrick Fitzgerald who finally brought him down. He is still in federal prison. Projected release date of 2012. You think any of the Roti or D'Arco or Marcy family will be holding a welcome home party for their associate? Peppers and sausage perhaps?

Jimmie Akins deserves to be imprisoned for life and Ever After. I knew him in 015, completely a psychopath, so narcissitic believing his own lies as he walked with his head so high.
