Florida Sheriffs Killed

  • Two north Florida sheriff's deputies were fatally shot at a shooting range by a suspect who was later killed by deputies after he fled across the county line, authorities said.

It happened around 1 p.m. Saturday when the two Okaloosa County deputies went to Shoal River Sporting Clays and Shooting Center in response to a call, said Michele Nicholson, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

Deputies Burt Lopez and Deputy Warren "Skip" York were pronounced dead after being airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, about 45 miles away, the sheriff's office said. Sheriff's officials identified their killer as Joshua Cartwright, 28, of Fort Walton Beach.

Prayers and remembrances for the fallen only in this thread.

There appears to be a very dangerous desperation in our country of late. Do not let your guard down for an instant. Do not become a statistic.

WE NEED YOU TO KEEP US ALL SAFE ! ! !

My prayers go out to the deputies families and coworkers.First the shootings in Oakland,Pittsburg and now this.Last year was terrible in this regard for our Department and Philadelphia had it even worse. There are some sick, violent individuals out here and alot of them are directing there rage at us.I read alot of comments on this blog where P.O's bash each other there's nothing wrong with criticism but sometimes the comments are just plain nasty. What I'm trying to say is when it's all said and done ALL WE HAVE IS EACH OTHER! It's open season on Law Enforcement. The Mayor,Aldermen, media, and a large segment of the public have already expressed what they think of us in no uncertain terms. If we don't look out for and support each other, nobody else will.I'm not just talking about P.O's this includes Detectives and all supervisors from Sgt's to the First Deputy. We're all in the same boat. It's time we circled our wagons!!

Check out the Officer Down Memorial Page (www.odmp.org). For those not familiar with the site, it provides a short description of the event, photo of the officer, and some personal info about the officer and his/her family. You can also search for specific officers by state, or year. All of CPD's fallen officers are listed in order (search by state, click on Illinois, then CPD). Whoever runs this site does an outstanding job, it is updated daily.
