Letters, We Get Letters

Whoever is looking into rearranging the call taking priority, look faster:
  • Today on Zone XX, we had two calls dispatch couldn't wait to give out in the middle of a backlog. The first? Assault in progress - with water balloons. The second was an EMS call for a drunk who fell over and cut his hand. They made that one a 1A priority call. Will someone somewhere tell the call takers to stop taking this BS that just buries us. Thanks.
What says the Department talking heads? Are we going to re prioritize soon?

OT, Lately, there has been alot of complaining about who got what pinch, what unit paper jumped what tac team stole your pinch. I dont get it, I dont have that much time on the job 13yrs, I have always been a worker in busy district be it uniformed, tac or a unit, yet I have never cared how many people were on the paper. If you are their and you want on your on. I dont doubt some people try to steal arrests I just dont get it. What satisfaction do you get from saying you made a good arrest when you know it's not really yours. Recently several members of my team have noticed an individual on our team that is very much that way " a glory hound" initially we figured he's young with only a few years on the job but I really dont think he will ever get it and it will ultimatly lead to his being fired. Let me tell anyone who doesnt get it. Awards mean nothing. If you step on your dick your just as fired as the next guy.Remember we are brothers and sisters and most of us have the same goal, to do a good job. Just be safe and help each other out. Always be humble and try to remember to thank all the assisting units, if not they might not be there when you need them. Okay I am going to crawl back into my bottle of scotch. Good night, Baxter, Baxter where are you

It was Zone 10 in the 011th District. Water Balloon fight between the kids on the 4300 block of Wilcox. If that's as bad as it gets this summer I would be happy. But to give this job right out of roll call while we are in a backlog ?? Calls like this one should never make it to my box, or that pad of paper sitting on the shelf where my computer should be. Be safe out there Boys and Girls.

Or E/B on Central Park. And if you need my location, dont ask "Where I is?" Also, ANY address that shows as a CHA property - including a scattered site 2-flat, for instance - gets an automatic response by police when the 911 call is for the fire department. So in 14 the other day, a citizen with an allergic reaction got CFD and a beat car. Apparently paramedics are scared of public housing residents. More extra City services to those who abuse them, yet have come to expect more and more.

Have you see this new "Pilot program" for "nonjudiciary personal concern"?

The basic jist of it is OPS take a complaint for verbal abuse, doesnt investigate it, finds against the P.O., and puts you in personal concern automatically.

And if you get 5 of these in 5 years they can take action against you. Can you fucking believe that? Of course they tell you nothing will be done over it but they are all a pack of Liars down at 35'th str. and its still paper against you. Ive never gotten a verbal abuse beef in 25 years.

I used to be so good at smoking out crime. And now? One things for sure and that is I give them this job 100% legit now. My numbers arent down. They are nonexistant.

Baaah! Patrols all a bunch of losers and subhumans to these jagoffs anyway. And now any gangbanger can cause you trouble simply by picking up a phone and saying you verbally abused him. They dont need to swear on any affadavit or even show up at OPS.

This cocksucker city found another end around to jag us off. Remember this one next time junior G-Man shows up and tells you to be aggressive.

I had a 1A Domestic Disturbance the other day. The offender was the 12 year old son. Mom spoke only spanish, dad spoke some broken English. Both had been here for years.

The problem? Son didn't want to do his homework and wanted to play video games instead. They sent two police cars and a Sgt showed up.

Close to $250k a year in police salary and non-English speaking mommy and poppy couldn't get little Juan to do homework and all they could think to do was to call the police. They showed me his report card by way of reinforcement but it was a CPS report card and was in spanish. I gave it back and asked for it in English since I was born and raised in an English speaking country. They didn't teach me about public aid and Link cards in school either. They just taught me how to pay for them for others.

What total bullshit. 1-David

Being on the CFD ambulance side of this, I totally agree with the response to "ride along with the ambulance" calls. Majority of the time, we're not doing the requesting, but our calltakers are checking the CPD request on the runs. Accidental overdoses, grandma with chest pains , does not neccesitate a CPD response. I had a little verbal dispute with an officer when we had a diabetic run. We were handling the hypoglycemic patient and were dumping some D50 in her, when he walked up and asked why we called them. I said I didn't request you guys, I apoligized, he continued to rant. Caught up with him later on an accident and basically said "relax my friend, not here to fight you guys, and we don't call unless we absolutely have to". Handshakes were exchanged, no hugs however..LOL. Ask your dispatchers to check the EMS event and see if you are needed..

However, as we know this only compounds the problem by causing a ripple effect and soon were into a rap.

I was on a committee years ago before the current 911 center was built. At that time we were going to reduce the calls for service to somewhere around 60 percent. Anyone with info where we are currently?

In the deuce: Is that REYYEDD (red) car on Perry or Prairie or are they both pronounced
Pah-Rear-REE?
Be safe, override the dispatcher and make sure everyone knows where you’re at when you call for cars.
Also, please stop asking the dispatchers for permission for anything. You're the police. You tell them what you are going to do. It’s a bad habit that has been getting worse over the past several years. This is the reason that some dispatchers think they are gods.
I should point out that it’s not just the dispatchers. I’ve heard POs with Spanish accents and some various Asian accents that are so heavy they’re comical.

Ahhhhhh...please do not blame the civilian employees of oemc for the majority of this. First, the priority system was designed and implemented by CPD itself, and has never been revamped or seriously re examined since its inception over 15 years ago. Remember that OEMC is a relatively new agency, only formally separated from CPD in the relatively recent past.
Second, ANY ems call, regardless of its irrelevance or stupidy to cpd, is a 1A priority. Always. This is according to priority set forth by cpd due to concerns that cfd personnel are likely to encounter hostile, aggressive, or uncertain circumstances while responding to citizens. Unlike, cpd, they are not trained to handle criminal incidents (many battery victims, fires, etc) or preliminary investigations (major crashes, doas, etc). Unfortunately there is no tiered ems priorities that might differentiate among the types of cfd calls so they all are lumped in as 1As. So yes, even though many calltakers KNOW its nonsense, there is simply no choice. Current city policy requires a dispatch on these calls as a 1A priority and there is NO discretion for calltakers to downgrade these priority calls.
Third, oemc is a political animal and unlike, cpd, its run by political hacks with no experience in communications or police operations. This means that its become a reactionary agency which runs primarily on fear. Fear for calltakers who fail to treat EVERY call as a life threatening emergency. NO longer can calltakers give information or advice to citizens, or direct them away from direct use of cpd resources. Instead the official oemc mantra is "pass the buck" and send EVERYTHING over for dispatch and let cpd handle it. And for those who deviate from this, the oemc is quite liberal with suspension time. As a calltaker its better to send EVERYTHING over than risk not sending a job for that one juiced person who complaines (even anonymously) and face a lengthly suspension for failure to do the job properly. Oemc has given out tons of suspensions over the past 5 or 6 years to calltakers for NOT sending cpd.
Finally, it is true that the quality of the more recent oemc employees appears to have declined over the past few years. But what does anyone expect when the hiring process has been so corrupted and political clout still reigns supreme in chicago. The who you know game is alive and well and oemc is no exception.
thanks for the chance to vent.

Sorry, I have no tolerance for people who have been here for ten years and still speak no English. Teaching public school In Chicago, IL, USA in Spanish does that. If I moved to Mexico I guarantee within a year or two I would know the language.

But I don't live in Mexico. I live in the United States of Kiss My Ass. I speak English and will not bend for immigrants who are too lazy to learn conversational English after living here FOR TEN FUCKING YEARS!

I have tolerance for those who make attempt to assimilate into their new country. It's the way of all immigrants to hold on to some of their home country culture, all immigrants have done that, but they also learn how to speak the native language of their new country.

Once upon a time my grandparents got off a boat from a foreign country and spoke no English. They never got really good at English but they did well enough so I could talk to them. My parents wouldn't teach us kids the old language, much to our detriment. So be it.

En los Estados Unidos hablamos inglés.

What about the average day Joe? I pay my taxes, and all my bills on time. I needed service, via 911, you think anyone showed up? If you guessed no, you're a winner.

I called the district (9) and asked to speak to the w/c, I did, any affect? No!

I then called back to ask for assistance again, I was informed taht there were more pressing priorities. I listened on my scanner, guess where they were. Not anyone paying any taxes! Fair?

I do not mind paying the taxes. How about some city services for us that do. The captain (w/c) stated that he was sorry but units are deployed somewhere
else.

Great!!

Those who pay no taxes get the best service! Fair? I think not.

No asshole, you are giving the police a bad name. We are not guidance counselors. The police functions to enforce laws, not to tell teach retards how to raise their kids or raise them for them. If you don't speak English then too bad fuck face 19p.

Hey SCC... I spotted this on Second City Sarge. A retired CFD Fire Lt. was venting on the story by Chuck Goudie and attempt by Ald Beale to go after our Uniform Allowance and Shift Differential checks. His whole rant was GREAT but this part seems very practical and very applicable to this thread:

---- Reduce the astronomical maintenance costs of repairs and the destruction of millions of dollars in Police and Fire vehicles with all the out of control running of these rigs. Almost every Fire Apparatus in Chicago does about 15 runs a day responding to false alarms and non life threatening incidents. Without even factoring in the fuel costs for these responses, these vehicles come with a price tag of around $500,000 each and will only last a few years because they’re too big, too heavy, and not built for this kind of abuse. It would make perfect sense to have 2 men respond in a small $25,000 SUV or pickup truck to most of these EMS calls to scope them out first, and 95% of the time they wouldn’t even have to call for additional manpower.

They gave out a call a few days in a row of a car with Indiana plates parked in a permit parking zone. The vehicle had a valid permit. WTF, with that and riding on every EMS call this is getting ridiculous. Soon we will be riding on calls to walk someones kid to school and dropping them at home after school. Retirement please get here quick. Is this Mayberry or Chicago?
4/25/2009 07:44:00 PM

#################################

All you need for a parking permit is a valid city sticker and proof that you reside there.

As for the Indiana plates =
I don't know about anyone else but it seems there are more and more of them on the streets.
Why?

Third, oemc is a political animal and unlike, cpd, its run by political hacks with no experience in communications or police operations. This means that its become a reactionary agency which runs primarily on fear.

I beg to differ. CPD is full of political hacks. Starting with JFED and hie promotions of commanders. Cuello, Doty, Mealer and others are examples of incompetence. Sounds like OEMC and CPD are in trouble with horrible lack of leadership. Blue shirts pay the price. So take one job at a time. If Jaun wants help with homework, I will be sensitive and help. I will assit paramedics. Let legitimate calls for crime wait. Eventually people of chiacgo will wake up.

Hay Mr tjmttugrn. Do you honestly think the w/c is going to send a car. Call 911 stupid. They dispatch the cars and there is record of the call and the results. The w/c writes down the bullshit you tells him and passes it to someone when he/she gets a chance. Just cause you think you are a bigshot talking to the w/c you are just getting smoke up your fat ass. But you are so proud of yourself that I bet you met Genie Roy one time at a caps outing and you tell all your friends how you know the commander. Keep thinking you are a bigshot while you live in the bridgeport ghetto. And take your whining somewhere else. We don't want to listen to your crybaby bs.

It's not just call priorities; many call takers are in some kind of alternate universe involving nail care and loud hibbity-jibbity with the gal in the next positon.

The old sworn POS had worked those districts, knew where the holes were, could give tips and direct a chase into a dead-end alley.

These new call takers don't know "Ridge" from "Ridgeway," or "Central" from "Central Park," and God knows they'd never spend a moment of their free time or a penny of their ample money on a Chicago atlas -- any more than a truck driver or cab driver whose daily business is moving things from point A to point B in the city knows directions anymore, or how to read a map.

It's problematic that calls are even given out on the right zone anymore...

Remember years ago in 024 when victims were sent to the "Batheeta" hospital?

"IT'S BETHESDA, SQUAD!"

Do I think that I am a big shot? No! The only thing that I was trying to explain, listen, was the fact that I am a taxpayer, and when I need city services, (i.e. police, fire, et cetera) that I should not have to wait for an inordinate amount of time (in my case, no one evered showed up) for the simple service for in which I pay. Perhaps everything is great for you, while you suck up the asshole chain of command, for me, the only thing I ask for is the service for which I am paying. Asking too much? I think not. And as an fyi, I have no relationship to the w/c, or for that matter anyone at nine, can you say the same thing?

In other words you can kma!! More to say, I left my e-mail address, are you too scared to do so? I would be glad to discuss this further. Are you?

Asshat-- stop smoking from the er pipe. I did call 911, in fact, several times, to no avail. I just want the service that I am paying for. Perhaps you are one of the ones that do not care anymore. You know what we we call you, right?

Is there something wrong with paying for a service and you get no reply?

I call it lazy, how about you?

As a calltaker I can tell you many of us have hubands, children or siblings who are police officers. We try to get as much information possible for police safety, but some of these callers don't even want to give you their location. And it is not like the old days where you could just file the call.
