Um, How About "No"
As part of his new budget proposal, Mayor Richard Daley wants to give low-income homeowners $200 in property-tax relief.
Daley would take $35 million out of parking meter lease proceeds and offer the tax relief to partly fill a gap caused by the state's decision to phase out a limit in how much property assessments can increase.
How about people only buy the houses they can afford? How about using that $35 million to hire more police? Better equipment? Raises like the teachers got, the aldercreatures got, the aldercreature's staff got, the mayor's office got?

Ald. Ed Smith (28th) said we should take a pay cut. This after he and the alderman received a 6% raise at the beginning of the year.
It's really fucking scary how short we are.
We are so out numbered out there.
His highness really needs to do some hiring and pay us what we deserve.
How about using that 35 million to buy off ALL the fucking judges in this county and put judges in that know what the fuck they are doing!!!!
How about this: Mayor Richard Daley and his cronies just stop stealing! That would fix 99% of the problem! This ones kinda simple!
Let the Revolution begin!
Wait, we had enough money for "Da Limpiks"... didnt we?
He is CRAZY.......
Where's my Tahoe?
O.K. I'll be happy with a WORKING POOL CAR!
What a wonderful, generous man. He comes from the same mold as a George Ryan, or a Ron Blagoavich.
So generous with tax payer money.
Bless our wonderful mayor.
PS: Sorry about those 2016 games your honor.
Oh..... and great choice for a police superintendent. He's like a big brother to us all.
Back in my day kid; you could not even think about buying a house without having 20% down payment. Remember that kids!!!!!!!!!!
Sssshhhhiiiitttt
Some low income homeowners only owe 200 for their taxes!
When do we get our??!!
Sick of this shit
I wants sum free shit too bitch
Daley, you piece of shit. Giving our money to people who should not have bought the homes they couldn't afford is politically buying votes for the next election.
Fuck you.
What if by night, you sleep in the ball pit at McDonald's playland like I do?
I keep hearing people refer to the housing crisis as if the problem only falls on people who initially bought home they couldn't afford. Since this whole economy thing companies have been laying people off by the thousands. So failure to pay or afford a mortgage goes well beyond the person that bought more home than they could afford. I know it may be hard to think about since the jobs of officers and emergency workers are mostly protected from drastic downsizing but please keep that in mind.
uh, um. where is the 4.2 billion or so greenbacks that the Mayor had on hand/standbye for the olympics?
i'm so so sick of his fucking bullshit and lies.
the morons who have multiple babies with no means to support them get everything for free--- the working guy who has children and raises them properly gets an increased tax bill---
The city employees that are gonna be forced to take 24 unpaid furlough days next year are probably the ones paying for this and not the parking meter fund. HOPE YOU EXEMPTS FEEL GOOD ABOUT HOLDING ONTO YOUR SPOTS.
This is only because there's only so many westsider lawsuits that he pays off every year, and he needs to get some money out to a larger section of voters.
When's the last time Daley was so obvious about paying off the black vote in this city other than what it took to get him elected the first time?
Shitbird Daley is on the ropes folks. Time to go in for the kill and send him and his wife to michigan on a rail, followed by the federal poker up the ass.
Warning if you live in 017 Dist Home Break Ins are on the rise. These are happening in broad day light. WTF are my fellow officers? See them in either Starbucks on Peterson or Whole Foods lot but never out patroling. I retired years ago but have to say that the new guys just dont care anymore.
Who the hell does he think he's kidding.
Its just a ploy to get his ass re-elected.
Low income people own homes and are up to date with mortgage and taxes?
Yeah..right.
Property tax relief to all or to none. Its the only fair way to do it.
But, then again, when has the stuttering prick ever worried about being fair? As long as the Crime Family gets fed, that is all that matters!
this city and this country are fucked!
Could it be he is trying to buy the minority vote?
Retired guy in 17 get a clue the commander of that district is a pompous ass to the low life blue shirts. BTW We never see Ol Mikey out making arrests he only like to make pics with Aldercreature Margie Laurino So thats why theres no police work in 17. BTW gangs are on the raise here too but again our leaders wont support us
Nothing changes in Chicago! Mayor still "buying" votes since the "Bathhouse" days! Daley does not need "the working voters" anymore! Genius idea though! Make it look like we are so broke that Daley had to "break the piggy bank" to cover his ass in the next election!
Ah yes the little stuttering prick is buying up votes again!
I know it may be hard to think about since the jobs of officers and emergency workers are mostly protected from drastic downsizing but please keep that in mind.
Hey buddy the major factor in the economic situation that we are currently involved in was caused by the housing market in which people were able to buy houses with zero money down and 100% financing.
This was done by people who wanted to move on up without working and saving like previously.
I sold my house in 05 and was shocked that prospective buyers were putting zero down when I had to get a bridge loan in order to put down 20% on my new home.
Those are the people we are talking about and you knew that, we are not the heartless ones here, we say it as it is.
The people who worked for their house, got layed off and cant afford to pay their mortgage is the sad fallout from the fannie mae/mac debacle which was started by clinton in the 90's.

Yes, but this sounds more like "low income" is criterion here. Not necessarily "low income now", but "always been low income." Except for drug sales..no one knows about that.
I'm angry as well. People constantly say that homebuyers bought more home than they could afford. I for one, can afford it. My main problem is that my estimated taxes at the time of closing missed the mark by 50%. And they keep going up. The amount I pay on my mortgage will be the same for the next 26 years, and I can afford that..what I can't afford is any more stealing. Makes you wonder if you really "own" your property at all, or are merely just paying rent to the government to keep paying the bank to eventually "own" property you will still have to pay an arbitrary tax to every year.
The mortgage crisis is over. A lot of people hopefully learned a hard lesson. The government continues to squeeze us. THEY are the problem now.

It's not your dad's police dept anymore. If you were working in this three ring circus/department today, you'd be at Starbucks as well.
But, hey! Put your neighborhood on here and we can keep an eye out.
See them in either Starbucks on Peterson or Whole Foods lot but never out patroling. I retired years ago but have to say that the new guys just dont care anymore
---------
some of us dont care anymore. but quite a few do. we are tired of getting beaten down. I rarely patrol but have the car in park. right or wrong its called survival. my job right now is to answer calls and avoid all contact with the public if i am not on a call. the days of patrolling are done.
$200 tax relief= 7 cases of Corona or 100 40oz King Cobras or 40 nickel bags of weed or 1 night worth of tooting. Talk about a stimulus plan.

True! How about eddie (very silent on contract) give up the $1,000,000+ per year cpd security detail? That would be an alderscum showing fiscal responsibility!
Had to laugh last night, watching Chicago Tonight. Ald. Stone said we are the only big city still building schools, fire stations and other construction, while all the others have suspended such projects. He said this as if it were a GOOD thing.
Hey, stupid; we know it's only because the beast must be fed. Daley promised zillions of dollars in Olympic construction to the industry and now that they're lost, some crumbs MUST be thrown.
STOP SPENDING MONEY WE DON'T HAVE. What a novel concept.

THEN STRAP ON YOUR WHEEL GUN PUT YOUR REEFER ON START DOING A NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME WATCH PATROL GRAMPS!!
Why do I even work? In this city, you get paid for being a complete bust out. Housing, food, money for drugs, programs, EVERYTHING you need. They seem happy all the time too, dancing on street corners all over, partying every day of the week, sleeping in til 2pm every day. Knocking up every 'ho they meet without any consequences. They have people like jessie contributing to their delinquency by demanding more free stuff for them. Maybe I'm the dumb one.........
Back in my day kid; you could not even think about buying a house without having 20% down payment. Remember that kids!!!!!!!!!!
10/22/2009 01:24:00 AM
Back in your day, you made $14K a year and houses cost $20K. Now we make $70K a year and houses cost $200K. Do the math gramps!!!!!!!
if arbitrator benn decides the police deserve a raise, even a modest one, the hit will be huge for the city for the retro payout--- maybe between 100-200 million... so now daley goes crying to the media that the coppers jacked up the operating deficit and it is now 700 million--- boo hoo hoo... first of all it is really our money that you made interest off for several years, second maybe get a contract done on time for once in your life and you wouldn't have to worry about a retro payout.... look in the mirror you sad sack, your voodoo budgeting and piss poor fiscal management are the problem.....
SCC, you recently held several posts concerning the "How was your service" cards and well done. However, I believe this is an issue you should tackle more often, especially with the city using their media connections to cry poor to the public! Ald. Smith wants us to take pay cuts by way of unpaid furlough days? No fucking problem, just remember that I am also going to take my paid furlough days and if the reverends can't stop the violence in their neighborhoods now wait until the already short CPD takes 24 extra furlough days next year. Who may I ask is going to police this city. Secondly, media, citizens and alderman, have we not already made cuts within the department to help the cities budget? 600 short x (average) $68,000 per year = about $40,000,000 a year the city is saving, not to mention pension contributions and insurance contributions. So please tell me what other city department is giving away more than 40 mill per year? Now lets talk about making sacrifices among jobs. One man to hook up garage cans to a truck, sucks!, but can be done and other than fatigue and soreness from manual labor, garbage man goes home alive. One man answering a domestic on midnights with no help and the domestic gets violent, copper does not go home alive or the way they showed up to work. Sorry, to be the one to say it, but police work is dangerous for a reason, people are dangerous and some body has to be the one to stop them!!! We all could of been something else, however we choose to be police because somebody has to and that somebody is us! Who ever thinks we are paid enough or are over paid, then take the test and join us, otherwise tough guy next time something goes really wrong for you!, handle it yourself. Most of you sheep can not protect yourself and your family, and that is what we are here for!!!! Lastly SCC, somebody needs to talk every day in a public forum, hint hint, about why a few weeks ago the city had money for the Olympics but is now reaching into rainy day funds to fill the budget. So had we gotten the Olympics would that money have gone to pay for them, and what money would have filled the holes?! Here's an Idea audit the city and cut the fat! 50 alderman? Contract that consistantly go over budget? 1 boss to every 2 workers? I am just saying SCC you have a lot of attention with this site. Use it to make this department and city better, by making viewers aware of at least curious as to what this administration is up to!!!!!
I could not believe it when I heard it CTA bus drivers can write parking tickets. Unit / District 511 wrote a ticket on a car for rush hour violation. When the owner of the ticket inquired after 100 calls it was disclosed that Unit 511 are CTA bus drivers. How many people can write tickets in the city besides the police, revenue and streets and sands?
why doesnt he just stand on some southside street corner handing out 50$? herein is the problem with the dummycrats here and in obamaland. there s no difference between good and bad behavior in their world. work hard...pay more taxes for those that dont work, have 10 kids by 10 different fathers and have ''self inflicted'' illnesses.drugs, alcohol, criminals, aids and others. their power is that you need them to fix your life. next election ...just say no.stop asking the tax payers to pony up more for the social leeches. you created this problem by failing to be truthful.
It's just another way he can put more money into the hands of his extended friends, family and mob associates. He has gotten the approval from his handler already.
No mention of cutting the alder rats millinos in "discretionary funds"
Or Daleys huge gaggle of body guard/servants
Or the alderats pay raise
We, who work for a living are subject to drug testing. Why aren't those who refuse to work tested before they can get a check, Linc card or whatever?
how about some cars
Off topic why is commander wedster now working in Tobias's office. What is the purpose of a commander there. Any other commander would have been demoted. What makes her so special???
reduce alderman from 50 to 15
reduce exempts by 20%
why do captains receive .75 a day and only work an 8 hour day
THE MAYOR SHOULD LAY-OFF 25 ALDERMEN, STARTING WITH ED SMITH (28TH), THAT WOULD SAVE APPROXIMATELY 40 MILLIONS DOLLARS. THEN ALL THOSE ASSISTANT, DEPUTY COMMISSIONERS.
welcome to COMMIE WORLD! Their just getting started.

What do you mean "this whole economy thing"? The reason the economy is in the shitter is because the banks were forced to give loans to people who did not qualify, and should never have been given a loan. They bundled these bad loans together with other loans and sold them. Someone is left holding the bag. Nothing is free.
We can thank Jimmy Carter and his Community Reinvestment Act, and Barney Frank for keeping the scam going by thwarting Republican efforts to look closer at the abuses and fraud occurring with the program.
This giving our tax dollars away IS going to end. But for the meantime, the redistribution of the middle class's wealth continues with all these giveaway programs.
If you look at the Cook County Treasurer's website, you will discover that the tax bills in "low income" areas are MUCH lower than ours. Furthermore, many of these homes benefit from a senior citizen's deduction. I would bet that, if the news media took a good look, they would find that many of the seniors are long dead and that their no-good grandkids are benefitting from the senior exemption and probably cashing dead grandma's social security checks as well!
Take a look at the block you lived on when you were a kid. You'll see exactly what I mean.
Where's my Tahoe?
O.K. I'll be happy with a WORKING POOL CAR!

hey give me a pool car any day
how about a surprise federal audit?
Sure, throw some more free cash at the "pillars of society". Why not? They've earned everything that's been given to them, right?
They've paid their income taxes. They've paid their property taxes. They've paid their water bills. They've promptly paid every parking ticket they've received. They haven't already received vouchers for subsidized housing. They haven't already received pamper and formula vouchers and food stamps. They haven't already received free health care. They haven't been cut checks for years and years because they're asthmatic. They don't get a check to stay home and babysit their own children. They haven't been given educational opportunities and scholarships that your or my kids will never have a shot at. They haven't had to set-aside a percentage of spaces for "minority" students at all their schools. They don't get free or discounted bussing to and from school. They aren't the first ones to receive free breakfasts and lunches at school. They don't receive free after-school programs and babysitting services.
SARCASM OFF...
AGAIN. Ass-backwards City of Chicago (and Federal-level) logic and a big, hearty "Fuck You"! to the hardworking, legitimate taxpayers - the majority of who are trying to do the right thing day in and day out, only to be continually beaten down by the powers that be. All while continually enabling and empowering those that are destroying what little we have left in terms of safe neighborhoods, decent schools, barely-affordable healthcare, etc., etc. Let's not forget to factor in the number of aforementioned bastards reaping these taxpayer-funded benefits that are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
As a prior poster mentioned, it's time for a revolution. Yes, indeed, a revolution. It's got a really nice ring to it, doesn't it?
Why does this City need 50 Alderman?
There should be less than half part time alderman on the city dole!
Most Aldermans Like Ed Smith are a bunch of whining do nothing, anti-police hating, bozos!
If I made 125,000 plus a year for a part time job as a do nothing alderman I would be up for giving up a few furlough days and a cut but at the rate we are for the crap we deal with... FU DALEY U P.O.S.
It's really fucking scary how short we are.
We are so out numbered out there.
His highness really needs to do some hiring and pay us what we deserve.
10/22/2009 12:11:00 AM
It said in the Scum Times today that there are to be 86 hired in the 2010 budget, does that mean there was no expiration date on that grant money after all? If so we aren't getting those recruits any time soon.
Um, most low income people don't own houses. Just a sound byte, people.
Comment to Mayor Richard M. Daley :
GO FUCK YOURSELF !!!!!!!!!!!!
If Ald. Ed Smith (28) wants cpd to take a pay cut, I suggest he start with his own 6% pay cut after all his job is only part-time and not life threatening or a 6 days on and 2 days off schedule nor his part time job ever take him away from his family functions like birthdays, anneversaries, graduations or other celebrations! How about it Ald. Smith? care to cut your raise first?
Off topic why is commander wedster now working in Tobias's office. What is the purpose of a commander there. Any other commander would have been demoted. What makes her so special???

Now that is some some revisionist history if ever there was. It was Republicans who fought for decreased regulation, and they got it in spades.
I got my mortgage in 1990 and put 16% down and still had to buy PMI until I had 20% equity.
The lat republican president kept the economy rolling on borrowed money, he allowed anyone who wanted a mortgage to get one. And now we all pay. Jimmy Carter was a knuckle-head but he did not cause this mortgage meltdown. That was caused by all that contribution money that Wall Street and big bankers paid out. The restrictions were eased in the last part of the Clinton Administration and then the floodgates were fully opened after 2001, September to be exact. To keep the economy rolling. How did that one work out?
You can only get relief in this country if you dont pay your bills. If you cant afford the place dont buy it. I know to many people short saled there property and it messes up the people that pay there bills.

Actually, no. Back in the day was in 2002 and I had to put 20% down so you dont even have to go to the 1960's or 70's. All my savings from prior job and first 4years on the job went into my house and its not a mansion either. Basic brick ranch. Got on in 1998...sorry but Im not the original poster above but just responding.
old timer beefing about 017 burglaries--- first of all congratulations on your retirement and i hope you live to be 100 and milk the city dry--- how many residential burglary pinches did you make while working a blue and white... we all know that most 0610's arrests happen via oemc dispatch, I.E. the neighbor sees dude climbing thru window etc... in a district as large as 017 you could drive around for years and never make a true on view residential burglary pinch, most are done via radio dispatch... so what is wrong with sitting in starbucks or wherever to pass the time between jobs... and the officers still care, just not as much as in the old days...
Not being able to afford the taxes on your house has NOTHING to do with "buying the house you can afford".
The constantly-escalating taxes affect mostly retirees on low fixed incomes, who bought and PAID FOR their houses decades ago and who now see that they will never be able to truly own their houses.
The property tax is one of the most viciously regressive taxes there is and the most unfair, in that it means you never really own your own home.
A typical oldster in this city (and elswhere) bought his house in the 60s, and then was looking at a tax bill of perhaps $200 to $300. These people cannot be blamed for failing to anticipate the rampant house and tax inflation in the decades since. They have clung to ownership because renting would have made them broke still faster.
Escalating property taxes, and the thieving politicians who collect them and who never get enough money, are a massive threat to owners and renters alike. We cannot keep what we've worked decades to earn because of the rapacity and unlimited taxing authority of our politicians.
It's a tragedy when you have a modest house totally mortgage free but have to sell it and move to a substandard rental because your property taxes went from $400 a year back in 1971 to $4500 today, while your pension has been rendered worthless by the same inflation.
And what of renters? We, too, pay obscene and unfair property taxes through our rents. Large buildings in Chicago pay 3X the rate per dollar evaluation as SF homes do. That gets passed on to the renters, or course, else the landlord couldn't afford to own the place.
At the rate our pols are spending our money and accumulating deficits, we will all soon be able to "afford" only a cardboard box under an overpass. Incomes are dropping nationwide and many elderly are confronting both decimated pensions and/or 401Ks, while those reliant on savings accumulated over lifetimes of frugality and sacrifice are being destroyed by the lowest savings interest ever.
I AM GETTING DOCKED THE NEXT 2 YEARS WORTH OF HOLIDAYS AND MORE FOLKS ARE GOING TO BE TAKING 24 DAYS WITHOUT PAY AND WE ARE GIVING AWAY MONEY TO PEOPLE WHO ARE TOO GOOD TO RENT!?!?
MAYOR DALEY IF YOU ARE GOING TO f54K ME THIS HARD LET ME AT LEAST MOVE OUT OF THIS CESS POOL YOU CREATED SO I CAN LIVE TO DRIVE TO WORK FOR FREE!
north coast 7:01 am--- i was raised on frugality and sacrifice and you couldn't be more right--- having watched both my grandparents live into their late 80's i can appreciate the words you have spoken.... two of the most peaceful tender individuals on this planet who worked their whole lives and had to scrimp and save like peasants in their golden years to survive.... yet we have individuals who bring children into this world with no means to support them and others who believe that breathing air entitles them to get everything for free... obama will save everyone, he is the messiah, but he is spending all our money doing so and none of his own.....

Revisionist history? Thats typical of you liberals , to accuse the other side of the thing they are actually guilty of.
What are your sources for your bullshit claim that the mortgage mess is the rights fault?
Bush tried to get closer oversight of Freddie and Fannie in 2004, and McCain tried in 2006. Both attempts were unsuccessful.
I don't give a rats ass how much you put down on your house, that has nothing to do with the situation. The problem was people were getting mortgages when they were not qualified to get them. We now see how that worked out. My source is provided below, And until you source your claims, its all just leftist bullshit.
FREDDIE MAC

I wasn't aware that the President of the United States gave out mortgages. Did William Ayers teach you that?
1. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are primary, initial purchase of owner occupied residential property loans?
2. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are refinanced primary, initial purchase of owner occupied residential property loans? (ie., homeowners borrowing on their equity, for whatever reasons)
3. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are primary, initial purchase of non-owner occupied residential property? (ie., residential property purchased for rental income, speculation, etc.)
4. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are refinanced primary, initial purchase of non-owner occupied residential property? (ie., non-occupied residential property owners borrowing on their equity, for whatever reasons)
5. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are non-residential real property? (ie., non-residential real property used as collateral to secure the lending of capitol, for whatever use the borrower chooses)
6. other than initial purchase of real property, whether owner occupied or not, what have these borrowed monies been spent on? (ie., what percentage of borrowers have used the monies loaned to them to purchase goods and services not directly related to the property used as collateral to secure the loan?)
7. what percentage of currently foreclosed real property, whether owner occupied residential or not, are in foreclosure because the practical value of the real property securing the loan is less than the payoff amount of the loan? (ie., the cost, to the borrower, of submitting to foreclosure, is less than the cost of attempting to sell said property to pay off said loan)
how does the old saying go, '...borrowing from peter to pay paul...'?
and/or 'neither a borrower nor a lender be'?
