Um, How About "No"

  • As part of his new budget proposal, Mayor Richard Daley wants to give low-income homeowners $200 in property-tax relief.

Daley would take $35 million out of parking meter lease proceeds and offer the tax relief to partly fill a gap caused by the state's decision to phase out a limit in how much property assessments can increase.

How about people only buy the houses they can afford? How about using that $35 million to hire more police? Better equipment? Raises like the teachers got, the aldercreatures got, the aldercreature's staff got, the mayor's office got?

Ald. Ed Smith (28th) said we should take a pay cut. This after he and the alderman received a 6% raise at the beginning of the year.

I keep hearing people refer to the housing crisis as if the problem only falls on people who initially bought home they couldn't afford. Since this whole economy thing companies have been laying people off by the thousands. So failure to pay or afford a mortgage goes well beyond the person that bought more home than they could afford. I know it may be hard to think about since the jobs of officers and emergency workers are mostly protected from drastic downsizing but please keep that in mind.

This is only because there's only so many westsider lawsuits that he pays off every year, and he needs to get some money out to a larger section of voters.

When's the last time Daley was so obvious about paying off the black vote in this city other than what it took to get him elected the first time?

Shitbird Daley is on the ropes folks. Time to go in for the kill and send him and his wife to michigan on a rail, followed by the federal poker up the ass.

Hey buddy the major factor in the economic situation that we are currently involved in was caused by the housing market in which people were able to buy houses with zero money down and 100% financing.
This was done by people who wanted to move on up without working and saving like previously.
I sold my house in 05 and was shocked that prospective buyers were putting zero down when I had to get a bridge loan in order to put down 20% on my new home.
Those are the people we are talking about and you knew that, we are not the heartless ones here, we say it as it is.
The people who worked for their house, got layed off and cant afford to pay their mortgage is the sad fallout from the fannie mae/mac debacle which was started by clinton in the 90's.

****************

Yes, but this sounds more like "low income" is criterion here. Not necessarily "low income now", but "always been low income." Except for drug sales..no one knows about that.

I'm angry as well. People constantly say that homebuyers bought more home than they could afford. I for one, can afford it. My main problem is that my estimated taxes at the time of closing missed the mark by 50%. And they keep going up. The amount I pay on my mortgage will be the same for the next 26 years, and I can afford that..what I can't afford is any more stealing. Makes you wonder if you really "own" your property at all, or are merely just paying rent to the government to keep paying the bank to eventually "own" property you will still have to pay an arbitrary tax to every year.

The mortgage crisis is over. A lot of people hopefully learned a hard lesson. The government continues to squeeze us. THEY are the problem now.

SCC, you recently held several posts concerning the "How was your service" cards and well done. However, I believe this is an issue you should tackle more often, especially with the city using their media connections to cry poor to the public! Ald. Smith wants us to take pay cuts by way of unpaid furlough days? No fucking problem, just remember that I am also going to take my paid furlough days and if the reverends can't stop the violence in their neighborhoods now wait until the already short CPD takes 24 extra furlough days next year. Who may I ask is going to police this city. Secondly, media, citizens and alderman, have we not already made cuts within the department to help the cities budget? 600 short x (average) $68,000 per year = about $40,000,000 a year the city is saving, not to mention pension contributions and insurance contributions. So please tell me what other city department is giving away more than 40 mill per year? Now lets talk about making sacrifices among jobs. One man to hook up garage cans to a truck, sucks!, but can be done and other than fatigue and soreness from manual labor, garbage man goes home alive. One man answering a domestic on midnights with no help and the domestic gets violent, copper does not go home alive or the way they showed up to work. Sorry, to be the one to say it, but police work is dangerous for a reason, people are dangerous and some body has to be the one to stop them!!! We all could of been something else, however we choose to be police because somebody has to and that somebody is us! Who ever thinks we are paid enough or are over paid, then take the test and join us, otherwise tough guy next time something goes really wrong for you!, handle it yourself. Most of you sheep can not protect yourself and your family, and that is what we are here for!!!! Lastly SCC, somebody needs to talk every day in a public forum, hint hint, about why a few weeks ago the city had money for the Olympics but is now reaching into rainy day funds to fill the budget. So had we gotten the Olympics would that money have gone to pay for them, and what money would have filled the holes?! Here's an Idea audit the city and cut the fat! 50 alderman? Contract that consistantly go over budget? 1 boss to every 2 workers? I am just saying SCC you have a lot of attention with this site. Use it to make this department and city better, by making viewers aware of at least curious as to what this administration is up to!!!!!

What do you mean "this whole economy thing"? The reason the economy is in the shitter is because the banks were forced to give loans to people who did not qualify, and should never have been given a loan. They bundled these bad loans together with other loans and sold them. Someone is left holding the bag. Nothing is free.

We can thank Jimmy Carter and his Community Reinvestment Act, and Barney Frank for keeping the scam going by thwarting Republican efforts to look closer at the abuses and fraud occurring with the program.

This giving our tax dollars away IS going to end. But for the meantime, the redistribution of the middle class's wealth continues with all these giveaway programs.

If you look at the Cook County Treasurer's website, you will discover that the tax bills in "low income" areas are MUCH lower than ours. Furthermore, many of these homes benefit from a senior citizen's deduction. I would bet that, if the news media took a good look, they would find that many of the seniors are long dead and that their no-good grandkids are benefitting from the senior exemption and probably cashing dead grandma's social security checks as well!

They've paid their income taxes. They've paid their property taxes. They've paid their water bills. They've promptly paid every parking ticket they've received. They haven't already received vouchers for subsidized housing. They haven't already received pamper and formula vouchers and food stamps. They haven't already received free health care. They haven't been cut checks for years and years because they're asthmatic. They don't get a check to stay home and babysit their own children. They haven't been given educational opportunities and scholarships that your or my kids will never have a shot at. They haven't had to set-aside a percentage of spaces for "minority" students at all their schools. They don't get free or discounted bussing to and from school. They aren't the first ones to receive free breakfasts and lunches at school. They don't receive free after-school programs and babysitting services.

SARCASM OFF...

AGAIN. All while continually enabling and empowering those that are destroying what little we have left in terms of safe neighborhoods, decent schools, barely-affordable healthcare, etc., etc. Let's not forget to factor in the number of aforementioned bastards reaping these taxpayer-funded benefits that are ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Now that is some some revisionist history if ever there was. It was Republicans who fought for decreased regulation, and they got it in spades.

I got my mortgage in 1990 and put 16% down and still had to buy PMI until I had 20% equity.

The lat republican president kept the economy rolling on borrowed money, he allowed anyone who wanted a mortgage to get one. And now we all pay. Jimmy Carter was a knuckle-head but he did not cause this mortgage meltdown. That was caused by all that contribution money that Wall Street and big bankers paid out. The restrictions were eased in the last part of the Clinton Administration and then the floodgates were fully opened after 2001, September to be exact. To keep the economy rolling. How did that one work out?

Not being able to afford the taxes on your house has NOTHING to do with "buying the house you can afford".

The constantly-escalating taxes affect mostly retirees on low fixed incomes, who bought and PAID FOR their houses decades ago and who now see that they will never be able to truly own their houses.

The property tax is one of the most viciously regressive taxes there is and the most unfair, in that it means you never really own your own home.

A typical oldster in this city (and elswhere) bought his house in the 60s, and then was looking at a tax bill of perhaps $200 to $300. These people cannot be blamed for failing to anticipate the rampant house and tax inflation in the decades since. They have clung to ownership because renting would have made them broke still faster.

Escalating property taxes, and the thieving politicians who collect them and who never get enough money, are a massive threat to owners and renters alike. We cannot keep what we've worked decades to earn because of the rapacity and unlimited taxing authority of our politicians.

It's a tragedy when you have a modest house totally mortgage free but have to sell it and move to a substandard rental because your property taxes went from $400 a year back in 1971 to $4500 today, while your pension has been rendered worthless by the same inflation.

And what of renters? We, too, pay obscene and unfair property taxes through our rents. Large buildings in Chicago pay 3X the rate per dollar evaluation as SF homes do. That gets passed on to the renters, or course, else the landlord couldn't afford to own the place.

At the rate our pols are spending our money and accumulating deficits, we will all soon be able to "afford" only a cardboard box under an overpass. Incomes are dropping nationwide and many elderly are confronting both decimated pensions and/or 401Ks, while those reliant on savings accumulated over lifetimes of frugality and sacrifice are being destroyed by the lowest savings interest ever.

north coast 7:01 am--- i was raised on frugality and sacrifice and you couldn't be more right--- having watched both my grandparents live into their late 80's i can appreciate the words you have spoken.... two of the most peaceful tender individuals on this planet who worked their whole lives and had to scrimp and save like peasants in their golden years to survive.... yet we have individuals who bring children into this world with no means to support them and others who believe that breathing air entitles them to get everything for free... obama will save everyone, he is the messiah, but he is spending all our money doing so and none of his own.....

Revisionist history? Thats typical of you liberals , to accuse the other side of the thing they are actually guilty of.
What are your sources for your bullshit claim that the mortgage mess is the rights fault?
Bush tried to get closer oversight of Freddie and Fannie in 2004, and McCain tried in 2006. Both attempts were unsuccessful.
I don't give a rats ass how much you put down on your house, that has nothing to do with the situation. The problem was people were getting mortgages when they were not qualified to get them. We now see how that worked out. My source is provided below, And until you source your claims, its all just leftist bullshit.

I wasn't aware that the President of the United States gave out mortgages. Did William Ayers teach you that?

1. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are primary, initial purchase of owner occupied residential property loans?

2. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are refinanced primary, initial purchase of owner occupied residential property loans? (ie., homeowners borrowing on their equity, for whatever reasons)

3. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are primary, initial purchase of non-owner occupied residential property? (ie., residential property purchased for rental income, speculation, etc.)

4. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are refinanced primary, initial purchase of non-owner occupied residential property? (ie., non-occupied residential property owners borrowing on their equity, for whatever reasons)

5. what percentage of mortgages currently in foreclosure are non-residential real property? (ie., non-residential real property used as collateral to secure the lending of capitol, for whatever use the borrower chooses)

6. other than initial purchase of real property, whether owner occupied or not, what have these borrowed monies been spent on? (ie., what percentage of borrowers have used the monies loaned to them to purchase goods and services not directly related to the property used as collateral to secure the loan?)

7. what percentage of currently foreclosed real property, whether owner occupied residential or not, are in foreclosure because the practical value of the real property securing the loan is less than the payoff amount of the loan? (ie., the cost, to the borrower, of submitting to foreclosure, is less than the cost of attempting to sell said property to pay off said loan)

how does the old saying go, '...borrowing from peter to pay paul...'?

and/or 'neither a borrower nor a lender be'?

You liberals are all the same. When somebody calls you on your bullshit, instead of citing facts, you insult and call names because you can't back up the claims you make. Guess what? The Silent Majority is on to your bullshit and your time is short.
