Police Shooting in 011

  • Police and the Independent Police Review Authority are responding to police-involved shooting in the Northwest Side Humboldt Park neighborhood Thursday night.

The shooting occurred about 7:40 p.m. in the 4300 block of West Augusta Boulevard, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.

Northwest Side Humbolt Park? Sounds like someone has some real estate to sell. Humbolt Park is 2 miles east. And is anything south of Grand really "north"?

Funny you mention that SCC. I've seen property sale sign between 1200-1600 N California that claim the buildings are in "west Wicker Park" or west Bucktown. I guess yuppies don't see the huge (Humboldt) park across the street.

this was kind of strange. 11 tac came over the zone saying 25 is chasing a car on keeler. then over the zone was shots fired on the 4300 block. dispatcher calls for more cars. copppers on scene say offender in custody. dispatcher slows it down and then continues to dispatch jobs.... no one really knew what happened untill later. anyways, badguy down, coppers all safe and going home to there families. all good in my book. great job guys. see you on the west side...

SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE
A 27-year-old man trying to rob a Crest Hill liquor store Thursday was fatally shot by a clerk, officials say.

The suspect, whose name hasn't been released, walked into S and A Liquor about 10 p.m. and demanded money, police said.

"There was a struggle, and the clerk fired a shot which appears to have hit the robber before he ran out," Crest Hill Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said.

Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet called police after a man arrived with a gunshot wound. Investigators were able to identify him as the robber, police said.

"He later succumbed to his injuries," Wilkerson said.

The incident was under investigation.

The Loop has always been considered the center of the city. If you are north of downtown that is considered "north side", west "west side" etc. There is no "eastside" that is the lake. However, there is a "south east side",which is located south and east of the loop. Humboldt Park is north and west of the loop.

Shooting at cars is happening a lot lately. I once read somewhere that this department frowned upon that.

Today, the Department is worried about crime and is looking the other way. In a couple of years, they might not be so worried about crime. For that matter, who knows who the mayor will be then. The department might want to throw some police meat to the media.

Be careful.

I called his office a few weeks ago because of a rumor about him not running for aldercreature again. Secretary said he was staying. He might as well quit, ward streets look like shit, got cave-ins we've been calling in since last spring all around the two block area of my house. I seriously doubt he drives around to look at his ward. If the ward super is telling him things are under control, he should be fired. I,ve heard the extent of his ward inspections are from his house to his office to the Emerald Isle and back home.

Doherty is running as a Republican for State Senate seat of the retiring Democrat James DeLeo. As grammar school civics class taught us, you can keep your current post and run for another. You don't have to resign your current elected post to enter the race for another post. You can't run for two post concurrently. If he wins in the general election, shortshanks appoints a new alderman. If he loses he remains alderman until his term expires and he decides to run again.

Officers, be very careful when you shot at a vehicle. Rule #1 they can check to see if in fact you were in danger, meaning did you have a way to exit out of the situation without using deadly force, RULE # 2 if you fire at the car from the side, be justified, RULE #3 Don't shhot out the bakc window unless they are firing or have already fired at ytou, they alwyas look at this is that the threat was past you and you survived the threat. I really mean this too, I once fire at the left drivers window and the poweres to be were concerned that it was not the rear of the car. I know that all situations are different, just remember that yopu were in fear of your life, alwyas watch for the video cameras and witnesses to back up your story. Stay Safe.

Coppers shooting at offenders in cars is definitely on the rise in the past 12-18 months. This is something that Hilliard tried to mold a policy on which it was frowned upon, but still left it open as a last resort option because otherwise it would conflict with state and federal law. The shooting is rising as of late because the offenders are using their cars as weapons more often, simple as that. If you are assaulted or battered with a vehicle and you need to shoot, then shoot. If you shoot someone other than the intended target, it will bring some heat, but no differently than if you clipped a bystander in a running and gunning foot chase etc. Just remember that like with any shooting a law suit will most likely follow. Remember these following guidelines: there are going to be many bosses there, some of which will know what they are doing and some of which will have no clue. Complete the paperwork yourself and your partner and take your time, because the lawyers for shithead are going to be going through it with a fine tooth comb. This will greatly lower the chance of inconsistencies because if you farm the reports out to other members of your team etc there will be miscommunication and the lawyers will try to turn that into a lack of credibility. Don't let the bosses rush you and make sure you scour their reports also and don't be afraid to point out errors, don't sign off on it unless they correct it. Listen to the detectives, listen to your FOP rep. And remember, you were in fear for your life or the life of your partner, an innocent victim etc. Don't be macho and not express that, it is a constitutional guideline.

Don't think for a minute that the realtors were not a big part of this. They certainly did push people into homes they could not afford, sent them to friendly mortgage brokers (with the normal kickback), and just generally smelled money. The buyers have a great deal of guilt too, they looked at the escalating prices, and thought, "o boy a quck turnaround." or " I'll live here for 20 years, put on a humungous addition, and make a fortune down the road." Sorry it didn't work out for you.

TASK FORCE ASSIGNMENTSOver the past two years, I have worked hard to ensure that specialized assignments andopportunities are made available to all of our members and that they are filled with the most qualified and deserving applicants, based on open, fair and objective processes. Few things are as damaging to morale and operational effectiveness as an environment whereofficers feel that their performance, work history and attitude are less important than who they know. I have emphasized making the selection process for special assignments more transparent, whenever possible. The application process for the Mobile Strike Force and the Special Weapons and Tactics Team are just two examples of how the Department has moved toward an open selection process. The clear identification of individuals who were merit selections on promotion lists is another example of an effort to increase transparency. These changes make our Department more fair and open. While no system is perfect, every applicant should feel that he or she had a fair opportunity to be considered, as well as know how they were selected. In keeping with this philosophy, I have directed that vacancies on any and all task forces be posted Department-wide. Postings may include a description of the Task Force, required abilities and preferred qualifications as well as information required to apply (i.e., resume, writing sample, etc.), timeline for application and where materials should be submitted, as well as any other information deemed relevant by the submitting bureau. This process is intended to ensure that opportunities are made available to all members of theDepartment, and that the most highly qualified and best-suited officers are selected for positions.Networking and an ability to work well in a team with supervisors, peers and subordinates areimportant aspects of any officer’s character. However, who one knows should not be the definingfactor in selecting a person for a position. Each and every officer of the Department deserves toknow that what really matters are qualities such as; leadership ability, exceptional performance, attitude, work history, dedication to training and education. Stay safe.

My f*#&king taxes have gone up every year to the point that my escrow is always short and my mortgage has gone up $300 per month in the last 15 years because taxes are based on property values which they help run up so they can get their commission. They tell their victims that property only goes up. They are and were most definitely part of the problem.

Regarding coppers that work in 011:

Roughly 90% of the district manpower has less than 5 y.o.j. And of those 5 years o.t.j., some weren't even spent on the "mean streets" of 011 for most coppers assigned here; some transferred in from other units. And let's not forget the 9 months or so spent attending the academy.

Being assigned to a busy district doesn't mean shit. And as far as 011 goes, it's a shadow of it's former self as compared to the late 80's/early 90's. Coppers that make asinine comments touting their "exclusivity" because they work in 011 would be the last motherfucker I want to be in a car for 8 hours with while doing a tour in 011. Most of these braggarts never saw a black man or ghetto except on television until they got to 011 - and it shows the minute you have to get hands on. So save your war stories and bragging rights for your suburban yuppie friends that you left behind when had to move into the city to take this job. The last handful of old school, non-entitled, "real" police that I had the great pleasure of working with left the building for retirement in the early-to-mid 90's. There are only a handful of really good coppers left in 011; the rest haven't been around long enough to be good coppers - nor is there anyone that really knows the job to train these new kids, or would want to train them (if 011 was still actually a training district).

And here's a little clue for all my black hoodie-wearing co-workers: you'd have better luck finding Jimmy Hoffa than a copper in 011 that can be referred to as a "FILLMORE RANGER"... (Fillmore at Pulaski, for all you "Fillmore" poseurs). You currently work in the "HARRISON" district.

Does the guy do his job? Then if so and he is on our side ( check his voting record he IS on our side) who cares what he does at night on his own time, just like us no one should care what we do on our own time (as long as its legal).

HOT TOPIC: whats this we're hearing the chief ocd made his own policy and is making sergents rate their teams on his self-created evaluation system? Don't we have a new personell evaluation system per department general orders? Anyone contact the union yet to file a grievance? I'm pissed this jag don't stop.

How can he make the sergeants do that? Is this coming down thru the commanders? Do any of them in ocd have a brain? He can't dictate policy or have a forced rating system. Somebody better wake up Jodi or call MLAS immediately.

Go back up against a doorknob and have masters give it a turn for ya!

No Policeman with time and in their right mind would submit themselves to being left virtually contractually naked by going to one of your task forces.

Too many rumblings now of people wanting to escape and the windows having been boarded shut.

Get your mouth shut. You'll put whoever in these units shortshanks, a dem heavy, a rev'run or an alderfool tells you to.

-------------------

Yes. I feel badly for the residents and businessmen up there. It is getting rough. You can see that things aren't getting better. There may be a riot of some kind up there this summer
----------------------

I grew up in Rogers Park at Morse and Ashland. Back then it was all Jewish and Irish and you could walk the streets without a worry, even at night. I live on the border of Logan Square and Humboldt Park now. It's just friggin "Thug City" here now with a few urban pioneers sprinkled in for easy burglaries. Even 016 has made a huge downward spiral, unless you live on the edge of Park Ridge.

If you're looking to MLAS to be a bastion of fairness, you're a fool.
They (and Weis) do what the Mayor tells them to do too. A while back when the Mayor's detail took over the Obama detail from Special Functions, Detached Services wanted all of the cops assigned to the detail from Special Functions to sign waivers. The waivers stated that the detailed in officers wouldn't be paid the same rate as their Detached Services co-workers were. The Cmdr of MLAS was there at the meeting, and insisted it be done. The Cmdr of Special Functions at the time refused to push that request on his troops. He was dumped a week or so later. Don't think MLAS has your best interests at heart. Every Unit head does what the Hall or WEISel/Masters tells them to, or they get the axe.

I am so tired of some the ignorance that some of our own portray. First of all, this story is about a police involved shooting in 011. There should be support for the officers involved and thanks to God or whomever that the good guys are ok. Yes, you have someone talking about how 011 is so great. So what? Shouldn't we be happy that there is some support for fellow officers in a district with 2 police shootings in the last week where everyone went home to their families?
The problem with some of the big egos that float around in 011 is that we were a training dictrict for a long time. Everyone that was new WANTED to work and WANTED to be a "hard charger". We all did when we first came out. It takes time to learn that it's not WHERE you work, but HOW you work that makes you a good officer. I've heard from people that "everyone" in 011 has an ego problem. There are some...but to put all of us in that category is just ignorant. People talk shit about others in every district. It's pathetic. We are our own worst enemy. The next time you hear one of these boastful officers bragging about where they work, just smile to yourself as you remember how great you thought YOU were when you only had a few years under your belt.

You would do best to keep your mouth shut and listen to what mature, experienced coppers have to teach you. Unfortunately, from what I read on this blog, based on your clout or your pout, people like you usually go far.

You and your ego have the makings of becoming a great jagoff though. I just hope that when life on the job interferes with the love affair you have going with yourself, you'll be with a "dinosaur" who can do the thinking for the both of you.

Now go back to Twitter you pitiful fool.

Say what you will but i'd give my left nut to have Cline back at the helm instead of the guy we gave now...

-------

Wow, your left nut?

And I wouldn't give up a good shit for either one of them. The Superintendent of Police has about as much impact on my life as People's sexiest man. Never met either one, never will, won't care.

We could have 20 more Supers or keep Jodi for 20 more years. It wouldn't make a bit of difference to me.
