Satellite Office?

Band-aids again. This from an e-mail:
  • I just got word that there is going to be a satellite office for the 8th District operating out of a library somewhere in the District (really bad idea). I really don't have any other information at this time regarding this, but I wanted to give you a heads up. Maybe someone from 8 can give us the lowdown because it's supposed to open up 03 Feb and be operational starting the 2nd Period (04 Feb). I'm assuming it will be only for taking reports to take slack off the beat guys that are so shorthanded there (and everywhere else).
Isn't it about time to redraw the 008 District? It's too big to effectively police and this "satellite" doesn't do anything except stretch thin manpower even thinner.

City of Chicago truck drivers consider strike vote
January 22, 2010 10:43 PM | No Comments

About 2,000 City of Chicago truck drivers plan a vote next week which might authorize a strike that could cripple such vital city services as snow removal, garbage collection and airport operations.

The drivers say the action is in protest against Mayor Richard M. Daley's decision to reduce their hours.

Daley wants to move O'Hare and Midway Airport snow removal drivers from a guaranteed, eight-hour work day to just two hours on days without snow.

Local Teamsters union officials say Daley is punishing the union for rejecting his demand for furlough days and comp time instead of cash overtime.

Chicago Law Department spokeswoman Jennifer Hoyle insists the Teamsters' contract specifically prohibits them from striking.

The 'Satellite' location has long been a rumor in Garfield Ridge. Last year it was supposed to be going into a closed Dominic's store on Archer Ave. The year before it was going into a closed truck terminal on 63rd Street. I am sure other neighborhoods in 8 have similar rumors.

Hey boys & girls. It's your favorite CPD boss, Lt. Richie Scotchbreath. Sorry I haven't posted in a while but I have been so busy planning Capt. Jimbo Spratte's retirement party. It is hard to write to so many heads of states around the world. That Jimbo is more popular that a big screen tv on Super Bowl Sunday.

Hic-Up, Blech, Fart...I think I just planted a tulip bulb in my undie pants!

Anyhow I truly hope everybody who can make Capt. Spratte's party does stop by. Capt. Spratte single handedly took down 7 major street gangs, 3 drug cartels and put 3,128 murderers in prison! It must be true because that is what he tells everybody.

Capt. Spratte looks forward to being the Director of Interpol after retirement. Hic-Up, Blech, Fart...I think I just planted a tulip bulb in my undie pants! Jimbo claims his first arrest with Interpol will be some guy named Osama Bin Laden. Jimbo stated that Osama called him and wants to turn himself in since Osama knows he has no chance of surviving once Spratte is the Interpol Director.

Well got to go, have to book the roman coliseum for Spratte's party. TR's bar and banquet hall was already book for the day we needed for the party.

Sincerely,

Lt. Richie Scotchbreath
(Rumored to be getting Spratte's Captain Bars once he is retired.)

"Bottom line. 011 has the best police and is the best policed district in the city"

I hope this guy wrote this just to get a rise out of some of you(if so, it worked), however I wouldn't be surprised if one of my fellow "Fillmo rangers" really believes this to be true. I am currently a hair-gel wearing officer in Harrison. This comment is embarrassing to me personally, and flat out wrong. I would like to apologize to the real Fillmore Rangers and "real po-leece" all over the city who have actually earned those titles. Not everyone who works in 011 is a stroke, although we have more than our share. All of the rebuttals to this post were dead-on, and well deserved. Stay safe out there.

p.s. you have to admit, those fake bullet holes on the sleeves of the black Ranger hoodies are pretty sweet.

and if they do go on strike how will we know? The reason all those other convention centers are so successful is because they are not owned by governments. Especially OUR world-reknowned corrupt government. Owned and operated by professionals who conduct conventions for a living. They hire professionals educated for the jobs they are hired to perform and ensure that they are done according to the promoters standards. Their union workers are paid union wages and extra taxes and fees are not slapped on to every swinging door and loaded box. The convention ship has sailed from Chicago and it's not returning to port ever again. Plus, I'm sure that once it opens, the library staff will consider who ever works in it their "personal" police force. Every time they have a disturbance, they will just ask the officer in the satellite office to take care of it.

That is a excellent idea. If you look outside of Chicago, there are many departments that use satellite offices to stretch resources. They can staff the satellite offices with light and limited duty officers who have the skills to write case reports and talk to the residents. Instead of hiding the valuable resources of veteran officers in call back or other units, create satellite offices. Finally, a good idea from 35th street.

Haven't heard any other details of who is going to man it, the hours, what's going to be inside there. 008 also has a satellite office in Ford City that was manned during the Christmas shopping season, but is never manned any other time due to lack of manpower. I'd love to see how often this satellite office will be manned.
And yes it is time to re-draw 008. It's too big.

Hey dipshit, try working 008 before you bash them. I have worked the ghettos of 006, 007 and 011 and also a little stint in the barrio of 010. Its simple working all those places and I was no where near as busy as I was for the years I spent in 008. 3rd watch you don't get the chance to play sneak-and-peak because you are in a RAP from roll call til check-off, lunches denied and you rarely get to stay on your beat and sometimes sector. They have led the city in calls for service for several years straight (ghetto districts don't get nearly as many) and still have the "ghetto" crime.
One good thing about 008 was the guys/girls on 3rd watch, good bunch to work with.

I did a ride-along in Atlanta one time when I was down there for a conference ten or twelve years ago. Their police "stations" are like walk-in offices in malls with huge glass windows in front and a regular easy-to-jump-over counter to separate the public from the police. Freaked me out.

Also freaked me out that when they "arrested" someone for a domestic, they gave them a summons to go to court. They didn't physically take the person in. (And they DID refer to it as an arrest.) But then again, they were a little light on lock-up space in their mall offices.

I wonder if all that changed.

Hello Blog Guys-
Please post the following information on your Blog. We need to get the word out and take advantage of every penny we can get from the city. The deadline to file is March 31, 2010. File NOW if you qualify before the money runs out!
If you qualify, you can receive between $25.00 and $200.00 from the City of Chicago.

-A white shirt.

City of Chicago Property Tax Relief Program

This program provides relief to City homeowners hit hardest by increases to their 2008 property tax bill for their primary residence. This program is needed largely because of the phase-out of the state law that put a 7 percent cap on the annual increase in the taxable value of home property, and because the drop of this year's exemption under that law went to $20,000 from $26,000.
The amount of tax relief you could receive is based on a combination of income level and the amount of your property tax increase. For example, the lower your income and the higher your property tax increase, the more relief you’ll be eligible for.
Only one check will be given per homeowner and per property and will be mailed to the homeowner’s mailing address.
You may qualify to receive between $25.00 and $200.00 in the form of a Chase Visa Check Card within six to eight weeks upon submitting your application if you:
1. Are a homeowner who has a principal residence is in the City of Chicago.
2. You earn $200,000 a year or less.
3. There was an increase in your 2008 property tax bill.

Any applicant with debts owed to the City of Chicago is not eligible for The City of Chicago Property Relief Program.

To complete the application, you will need to attach a copy of your current tax bill as well as a photocopy of a government-issued identification card with a photo that indicates your home address (Driver’s License or a State ID Card).

If you don’t have a copy of your tax bill you can contact:
Chicago Tax Assistance Center
City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Room 100

Off topic but must be asked:
Why hasn't State Rep Monique Davis been arrested yet? she is in possession of stolen property, which openly refuses to return. If it were anyone else she would be in the 005th District lockup, could you imagine if it was copper who took the statue?

IT: Talk about double standard, State Rep. Monique Davis has in her possession lost/stolen property. To wit, a statue owned by Chicago State University, which she refuses to return.

Now if a lowly state employee had possession of this statue do you think that employee would be allowed to keep it with no consequences? Or even return it with no consequences? He'll no! That employee would be locked up faster then Obama can spend tax dollars.

Cant remember last the time I read a post of someone bitching about the size of 008, honestly. But what I do remeber are the jaggoffs who constantly run their mouths off about the people working in 008 like the poster above. Dont be pissed off if you have to work the ghetto you fool. Ive put my time in and bid here to protect where I and so many others live, the area that has been neglected by way too many for way too long. The fact is 008 is too big, the fact is we are shorthanded and the fact is 008 is one of the busiest largest districts in the whole city. I honestly do feel bad that many have to work the bad areas because they dont have the time to bid out (sorry but its a fact of life) and it is a safety issue citywide, but dont ever badmouth your fellow officers for wanting the same thing so many others have had for years....an abundunce of manpower and cars. The only district that comes to mind about about really needing more officers in a busy place is 3. Overall I will agree that we are short citywide 3-5thousand officers. Get rid of tru and mobile strike and put them back into the districts. Sorry bout your piss poor attitude buddy but sounds like you are the one who's bitching.

HAHA!! thats cute young man. Obviously this is somebody that doesnt work in 008 or has never worked in 008...or works in msf or tru. 008 is rediculous. from kedzie to bell is just an extension of 007 then lets not forget the mexican neighborhood that is about 60% of the district that is usually out of control. If your so confident that its the officers and not the size, population and call volume of the district then bid over and show everyone how you do it. If not, then go back to bed in what ever district you work in.. im gonna guarantee its alot slower than 008.. just look at the numbers hairgel warrior. 008 has the population of cincinnati ohio and is almost 30 square miles. How many more PO's have to die or get seriously injured before we take action on the manpower crisis?

We need a Police Wives Assosciation

1/23/2010 12:12:00 AM"

There is or was a "Police Wives Association", but I haven't heard anything about them in years. Their logo was a silver five pointed star encircled by a wedding band.

Considering modern times what we need is a "Police Family Association", one that is NOT under the umbrella of the department or the FOP.

I would love to produce a TV spot before the next mayoral election. It would be simply be a series of police widows and family members looking straight into the camera who each deliver a part of a speech that would be something like.

"Mayor Daley, for over twenty five years you have trashed the Chicago Police Department. You have cut manpower and equipment while your friends have grown rich with your grandiose plans that benefit few and leave our neighborhoods unprotected. You have put incompetent managers in place in our department (show photo of Weis and Masters) instead of real police commanders.

"You have cut our benefits, held up our contracts and raise our taxes while you forged ahead with you spending spree for Olympics and other things that do not serve the basic needs of the public."

"We are tired of your arrogance and ignorance about real people issues. You forgot that police officers and their families are citizens and voters. Come Election Day we will vote for a long over due change."

Stay safe, the speech needs some work, but you get the idea.

If you are going to have Satellite Offices, why not put them where the city will not have to rent space, people come to make police reports anyway and they city will not even have to pay for electric or phone service. There are even security guards 24/7 for back-up.

Put them HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOMS.

There is a Police Room, a phone there already, give them a radio charger, a computer terminal and a sign on the door and it's up and running. With an officer there already, there would be no calling and tying up a car.

Stay safe, now watch Dugan go waving this idea in front of Jody like he's some kind of genius.

It shouldn't stretch manpower resources if they assign some of the walking wounded and other POWs from call-back over there to do the reports.

1/23/2010 12:13:00 AM

That is a excellent idea. If you look outside of Chicago, there are many departments that use satellite offices to stretch resources. They can staff the satellite offices with light and limited duty officers who have the skills to write case reports and talk to the residents. Instead of hiding the valuable resources of veteran officers in call back or other units, create satellite offices. Finally, a good idea from 35th street.

1/23/2010 07:58:00 AM

We are about the last of the larger departments, and certainly the last of the big 5 departments, to have satellite mini-stations. As usual, we are 20-30 years behind the times. Ever see the NYPD blue neon sign at Times Square? That's one of their satellites.

008 Respectively should be re mapped into 4 sectors

10
20
30
40

With early and late rapids assigned to cover sector borders,and/or assigned to "hot" areas delineated by calls to service and SPECIFICALLY calls for Drugs,Gang Activity, and Other Violence. This would free the Gang and tact teams up for missions in other areas of the District.
Special Units: TRU MSF Ect would be CALLED IN on an AS NEEDED basis(scheduling errors, over lapping furloughs, IOD's ect)

simple enough when it was suggested to COMMANDER MALLOY
which is HOW LONG AGO THIS IDEA HIT PAPER.

Fine tuning is always welcome.

Additionally, Zone 6 should CONSIDER placing 007 and 008 on Different Frequencies due to EXCESSIVE CALLS in both districts.FCC has allocated 45 UHF channels for license under City of Chicago Police and NONE are being used. This would ENHANCE OFFICER SAFETY.

WOW!

That really puts the Chicago PD "manpower shortage" in terms that most citizens can understand!

I once checked the manpower levels in all 25 districts and noticed that most had about the same number of officers(excluding 001 and 018)-even though some districts were geographically much smaller. For example, 015 is somewhat small in geographic terms. In larger districts, there are single beats that are nearly as large as the entire 015th district. However, 015 is violent and busy.

Some districts are slower, but have similar manpower numbers as busier districts.

It appears that district re-alignment is long overdue..but will never occur because it is a political hot potato!

It doesn't really matter how you redraw 008's beats or sectors. Without more manpower you are just moving Titanic's deckchairs.

Does 008 still have about 20 people in the offices??

Sorry, "dick", but apparently you're not paying attention - we're minimizing arrests due to the lack of departmental support and a general lack of trust of those in command.

Archer Ave? Never. That would raise the crime index too high. The way the district is laid out now, PO's usually don't arrive at a citizens residence to make a report until after they've moved out of the city. This keeps crime down and citizens blindly gleeful.

1/23/2010 07:10:00 PM

Aw come on, don't give me this progress crap. There is nothing wrong with the way we do things here in Chicago. I've been doing case reports with a pen on carbon paper form sets for 40 years now and I see no need to start doing them on any damn newfangled computer.

This damn computer craze will have run it's course soon enough and we can get back to yellow legal pads and pencils.

First they take those beloved white stripes off the side of my uniform pants, then they changed the shoulder patch, then some smart guy decides the revolver isn't good enough anymore, and now they want to do what, put case reports on computer and open satellite offices? Harrumph! We don't need that crap.

Police Omnipresence my friends, it was good enough for O.W. Wilson, it is good enough for me!

Besides, I own stock in a carbon paper company and my grandchildren have never even heard of carbon paper! Young whippersnappers. Computers indeed!

many suburban police departments employ "satellite" stations and also offer victims the option of reporting crimes online.... welcome to the 21st century---- as usual, we are adopting policy that other agencies have been practicing for many years....

1/23/2010 02:10:00 AM

Excellent idea. We send people to those satellite offices at suburban police departments. We tell them it is the newest thing. And we also direct them to the online sites of those same departments. We can really take a bite out of crime that way.

True story: I had to travel across town (I live in 008) to the 008th D once to add myself to an already fucked up crash rpt. I was scheduled for surgery that morning so I couldn't wait for a beat car which may have never have come b/c the distrist is always in a backlog and it was no priority. Much later, after re-interviewing a neighbor I located the car that hit my parked car only one block away from my hse. This was in the spring. The accident was in Jan 09! The confusion was that the officer wrote the offending plate down wrong. I even had ISP run it on my job (IDOT). The thing is he physically had the plate in his hand from the neighbor. Was he in a hurry? The ins. company. AIG (remember them, it's now 21st century)would not retun my 1K deductible unless the original CR was updated w/ both cars. I had to write the Bureau of Admin. Svcs CO to get it updated b/c every time I went to that zoo (no offense) on 35th street it was not updated. I got my 1G returned. We had the same insured.
I'm just sayin, a simple crash in
huge district nearly cost me a G. and all I was doin was sleeping.

Maybe hire civilians to work the desk at district stations to take reports. And maybe a school patrol unit.

In short, there is very little that is new here under the sun. Except efficiency, fairness, timely and equitable contract negotiations. You get the drift.

why don't we just let people fill out their own reports? They could fill them out for everything except violent crimes, or where offenders are on scene. Even things like burglaries could be done, if an ET is needed they can just check that box and fill in some basic info. These completed reports could be reviewed online by any desk sgt in the city who would determine if police need to respond.
Most of the non violent crimes don't get investigated anyway, and this way people wouldn't have to wait around for police to make it over.

...and produce a video, get some real police family members, don't use names, use the on screen titles of "Police Officer's Widow". "Police Officer's Wife or Husband or Son" and you can say "I worry that my husband-dad-mom doesn't have proper backup because Mayor Daley has been shorting the CPD of manpower." "I worry if there is a knock at the door and he's not home."

Work with that, maybe get some college TV production class to give you good camera work and lighting.

Sorry guys a civilian cannot fill out a POLICE report.

A civilian aide could do a better job of completing a cae report than the young females on the desk today. Beat cars blow off reports every day or cannot complete a traffic crash report correctly. Two trained civilians equal one police salary. The mayor and public do not care who completes the report. Wake up!

You've got to get that hamster to spin that wheel faster in your fucking brain. Because there is no way the city is going build report kiosk when there is whole unit already dedicated to it.

So you can take your fucked up sentences and obtuse thoughts and believe you are more intelligent than me. This is only possible because of your incredible ignorance.

Hey Moron. ever hear of a Police Aide. I guess you are relatively new and dumb. How about a Cadet?

Don't spout off if you don't know shit. Police Aides would use their employee number at the "star" line. I don't know if cadets do case reports or are merely slaves to the desk crew.

I have only worked in 8 on a few occassions, but holy crap is it busy! I would rue the day that I got assigned to that district, too many shitheads and normal people...that is hard to police. Give me one or the other.

When the 8th district was originally mapped out way back when, it was farmland west of St Louis Ave....it's time to re-map! Never have a bad word to say about my 008 PO's---especially 812 1st watch...who ran after the punks who stole my neighbor's car radio for BLOCKS and caught 'em!
